Hi guys!
I am a student in the mysteries of animation currently attending Digipen Institute of Technology located in Redmond Washington.
2D animation is my passion (haven't tried 3D... yet..) and because of this I believe a better grasp in drawing skills will push the limits on my work.
Right now I am trying to understand all the basic things such as perspective, lighting, posture or staging, composition, color, etc, etc, etc. It seems you can't really learn all this unless you are willing to open your eyes and see.
Took me a while, but here I am (better late than never right?) so it's time to kick some ass (me own) and get some Artz flowing!
Any critiques are more than welcome, I will try my best to keep this thread alive with variety with some traditional, some digital, maybe even some sculpture...?
More importantly if any kind of thought crosses your head while viewing this thread, write them down and share, any kind of knowledge is precious in my world.
Well that's it, thank you for checking my stuff, for any feedback you might be leaving and for not mispelling the word onomatopoeia.
Cheers!

Let's start this show with some school work, some model sheets and stuff. I've never used a tablet or painted digital before this assignments so it was a pain to get what I have. If you have any tips on how to use photoshap or a wacom please pass them on. I will keep working on my digital and such, hopefully sometime soon the progress would be visual and so on.
So without any further delay...
Model sheetz!
First we start with the concept of an armoured animal. I went for a Sloth with some tropical carcass as armour... Didn't work as well, maybe I'll post the sketches to setup a comparison from concept to final...

Then we move on with some established character design. I was supposed to do a character from Narnia in the style of Bill Waterson. I had to redesign this little guy like 5 times before I was happy with the results, and I still think there is more work to be done to him!

And finally some unfinished work, we had to do a super hero of ourselves and a villian out of a class mate... Unfortuantely I took to long in design and well too long in painting etc so my sheets are unfinished. I want to go back to them though, but first I need a wacom tablet...

So there you go. I know most of work is stiff and not even finished, I apologize for this, but that's why I am starting a thread, hopefully after a couple of months I'll be working on other issues instead!
thank you for looking around. (?) ;)

I think life drawing and artistic anatomy would help. I assume that when you design you work from the inside out and make sure the structure is working before putting clothing on your figures. Arms seem to be a problem. The color choices are pleasing.

Ernesto!! Yes! i've been waiting to see this sketchbook, somehow i just ran across it! I havn't seen any of this stuff! Pretty sweet, Keep it up! i like the redesign of your Narnia character... The plane basher idea for your hero is awesome! Yeah, get a tablet... it will make painting alot more easy! We got to get together and draw one of these days! This summer is perfect to just rock out to drawing, and get as good as we can! Draw Draw Draw!!! :) Lookin forward to your next post!

Thank you very much for the tips. You are right the arms are effed up cause I sort of cheated... I only drew the complete arms for the front pose of both characters and then just fliped them for the back pose. I was in a huge rush with this assignment so it made sense back then. I am going to get back to it soon, and hopefully fix that.
Do you happen to know of any books I could reference for the artistic anatomy? A favorite maybe?
And last but not least, that's exactly how I work. I like to do little silouhettes of my design before comitting to clothing, I just don't seem to have that good of grasp with cloth, I need to go and check that out.

For sure man, we should have like 2 days a week we just get together and draw, I don't know maybe end up being a regular thing and such.
Haha my money is being saved up right now for a Intuos 9 x 12. As soon as I reach the goal I am getting one.
By the way, thank you for the props. I never got to show my work on class, pretty dumb thing to do, but I learned my lesson. I am a little sad that I never pitched my super heroes, the story between was hilarious.
I am going to try posting something tonight, I have a sketch I am doing for Zack (even though he already left) and I am barely starting my DPDSG sketches. I am going to put all of them here, sometime before Tuesday.
Thank you both, it's very motivating to see people pitch in on your work. Please come back!

I know! I know! It's been a long while since I promise some drawings.. and the worst part of it all is... (I haven't been drawing at all!!) I know!
Blasphemy! but oh well, with my father in town thigns have been a little busy so I haven't found some peace and quiet yet. So to keep up a small part of my promise to post something, here are some old portrait drawings I did sometime last year... I am struggling real bad with portraits... Front view always seems so easy but with 3/4 or top/bottom views everything falls apart. I've been reading and practicing some loomis but I have to pick it up again from scratch since I dropped the ball during finals.
If you have any tips/recommendations for drawing faces please drop them in here. Very much appreciated.
Have a nice Friday!

Hello,
I don't have much, just this little sketchbook page with some random doodles. I will post more tomorrow. This is just to keep myself going, it is said it takes 21 days for a habit to kick in, so day 2 it is...

Hello there!
I know, I know.. You are probably thinking "How come he can dance?" And well, the answer is that I took dancing lesson... but besides that I also got some drawings up, some life drawing (trying to nail some hair... argh still giving me trouble) some crazy stuff from my head, (makes no sense, because I don't really know what's going on up there.) Some female anatomy study (I am trying to figure out the whole curve staright relationship in the anatomy that makes it so appealing.) and a little study for my master painting assignment, I am going to aim for some John Singer Sargeant.
Any advice please chip in. Any tips also.. I am going to focus a bit on imagination, practice some hair rendering and hopefully test a bit of gouache painting.
Oh and faces!! Offcourse, been doing some portraits probably put that up sometime.
Have fun!

Wowwawiwa Ernesto my dear. I'm glad to see you are posting some self portraits, they never fail! May 12th - June 2nd is a big gap! what happened to 21 days to keep a habit! I am glad to see you loosened up on this last post, that's the best way I found to find form. It may be messy for awhile, but eventually you get a grasp of the object in the round. It seems every artist has to find their own way of learning that works best for themselves. I might recommend you try selfportraits with all different media such as graphite, pen, black and white paint, and styles such as blocky bridgman or curvey loomis.
Be sure to focus on core shadows when doing value, I like how loomis does it in his Life Drawing book, check it out...NOW! dont forget bounce light. We must fight to learn. Go look at the book and draw! Stop what you are doing and go! Slacker lvl 99!
