I'm having a lot of trouble sketching out faces. Are there any good tutorials around, or do you suggest I just study more faces?
Thanks for your time

yeah, the face/head is very very complex, but loomis is definitely a start... in the end you dont even have to use his technique if you dont like it (I dont, I just sketch out loosely)

I had a teacher in Art school that had a great exercise. Instead of drawing heads with lines, draw the shadow shapes. We went through magazines and other things, found pictures with shadows (so like not beauty ads with no shadow at all) and sketched them the size of a postage stamp. The trick is, if you get the shadow shapes right, you have the face. We don't see in lines, we see in shapes, so if you understand the shadows of faces, your brain sees the depth and dimentionality. You can then draw it in lines easier. When using recognisable people, don't sweat making them exactly right at first, just try to get down some key face shapes. Do these in a minute, you almost don't need to lift your pencil. I just did one here for you:

That is an awesome tip, and thanks for the example. I really see what you mean.

That shadow technique really works, along with studying faces and contours. Great tip
