:pirate: Ahoy there! Welcome to my sketchbook! My main goal with this is to LEARN… So please post a comment or a critique.

Hey guys, I’m back!!! Been a LOOOONG time, over 2 years since I last posted in my sketchbook!
So I threw up some old stuff as well as some new studies HERE at the bottom of page 4 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96479&page=4)

Welcome to the site sketchbook section.

i think your shading is good, however some of your lines thus far seem a bit jagged in places where one would think they should be smooth.

keep at it.

Welcome Sealegs!!
agree with Nico on what he said, in adiition the mouth on the lower face is too mutch to the left

NicoRaven- Yeah i agree, the pose also looks pretty stiff...i need to loosen up more...
Chillpill-Thanks for the critique!
Grim Reaper- Thanks, yeah there is gonna be alot more to come in the near future.

Thought i might begin this post by posting some stuff from the last couple months... Most of these were assignments for school, the last 2 are some quick "pokemon" designs i did for a sketchgroup the other day.

Hey nick, OK I am going to stop bugging you about posting the rest of your sketchbook. "I need to loosen up more"? You are very loose nick, but for some reason you only want to post your cleaned up work that is very stiff. Your quick sketches look better than all of this stuff. This is the sketchbook forum, so basically this is where you should post your sketchbook. So why aren't you?

I like what I'm seeing so far here. You have some very interesting character designs. I look forward to your next post!

May 5th, 2007, 10:40 PM
Hey! I like your characters a lot. "Edmond" reminds me of Psychonauts for some reason, very cool style! Pretty much all the stylized pieces are really great.

Life drawing needs some work but its getting there. I think whats bugging me is the values, they seem a bit off in certain areas. For example the neck in the side view of the head. (this critique is for the life drawings not the characters)

Keep up the good work I like what I'm seeing!

NicoRaven
May 6th, 2007, 04:06 AM
Edmond reminds me of the animator of bettlejuice from the niities. Cool style and keep it UPPPPPPPPPP!

Later, dude

th3rd_sin-I posted these to give visitors a quick background of my art... about keeping it loose... Remember there is a fine line between loose and sloppy... my goal is to keep it loose, and get good lines... if i do a sketch i like, ill useually take the extra few minutes to tighten up the linework.

loner86-Hey! nice of you to drop by, so when you gonna start your sketchbook?

Clocks-Hey thanks man! Yeah my values definently need some work... The "edmond" character, was for an assignment, it is supposed to be in the style of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

NicoRaven-Haha! Thanks!

Some life drawings from this morning, values are pretty bad :( i kept running out of time...

Random sketches...

Love your cute characters:)
Especially the crocodile chomper
Is that a kind of weapon?:)

Sealegs
May 7th, 2007, 03:46 PM
SeanAni- Hehe thanks! Yeah the chomper was a weapon for a baboon ninja! :)

Ok its time to start learning!!! I woke up late today and decided to warm up by drawing some heads (which im so weak at) (left) i then realized how much work i have to do....a few months ago i got the Head and Hands Loomis book, i did a few studies on head construction a while ago, i whiped it open today and drew some eyes, from the book and from memory (right)...

IT IS TIME I LEARN TO DRAW A HEAD ACCURATELY! :) So im really gonna be focusing on heads and faces this week! So expect alot of heads soon...

Wahuh?
May 7th, 2007, 04:59 PM
hey man I love your character sketches, they are really fun and full of bounce :D I'm not too keen on the hard line on your anatomy/life studies though but thats just me. keep up the good work man, want to see more heads :)

Hey sealegs, really liking your work. Particularly liked the 'longshot lui...' figures, really nice! Also like the 'edmond' character - kinda reminds me of a public schoolboy i met at uni!!

I can't offer to much crit at the mo as i'm starting up too but keep up the good work! I'll check back and see how your progressing...!

th3rd_sin
May 8th, 2007, 06:23 PM
Nicholas!! Hey man, diggin the heads and eyes, you are deffinately further off on them than me. Howver I noticed that in your 3/4 views in particular you seem to lose a lot of structure. Think planes, try rendering them or just study the skull! Keep up the radness, man!

Your lover,
 Anthony

Sealegs
May 9th, 2007, 05:49 AM
Wahuh?-Thanks, lots of heads to come :)

Gerbils-lol...well thanks!

t0eknee-hey thanks for dropping by!

th3rd_sin-Yeah, i really am working on the 3/4's, ive got to feel around the form,"see the hidden ear", see the unseen forms...I think ill do some plane studies on the head, i think i saw a plane-breakdown in loomis's book... Thanks for the crit..and for the love...lol

Didnt draw as much as i hoped today, here are some skulls from tonight, and i finally drew from that skull i purchased a while back! :blahblah: Practice Practice Practice!

Come on Nick!!! More art!!! !!!

(Great job by the way, your faces have a cool style. Have you checked out bridgeman? I believe Loomis has a very functional head structure system but Bridgeman touches the planes of the faces very nicely. Check it out at least, might bring out more stuff out of your art. ) (Which is awesome! So post more!)

Hey sealegs interesting stuff in here. Really like your characters especially that rock/plant dude. You have a nice cartoonish animation style that I see going on which is great. :) Also I like your sense of humor you have in some of your stuff, very cool. The only thing I see right now is work on your value and shading, just push your contrast more in areas. That way make you think more about your lighting. Maybe practice the same character under different light sources/direction. Great your working on your anatomy and faces, and doing the studies as well. Keep pushing yourself :)

Sealegs
May 16th, 2007, 04:15 AM
bbassir-lol thanks, you too

destinyapocalypse-thanks for dropping by!

Duque-I know, i was gone most of the week! Much more art will come!

Yautja892-thanks alot for the tips! yeah i really need to work on those values...

I finally got my hands on a toned sketchbook... random stuff from tonight...

bbassir
May 16th, 2007, 10:34 AM
Hey Sealegs great work. If I may offer a brief crit in regards to your pirate character: watch the proportion of your limbs. Her arms in relation to her torso are too short and skinny- either taper the torso drastcally so that we can better understand your stylization or give the arms more realistic proportions. Same thing with the legs, if only to a lesser degree. Also watch where you place the knees- they seem a bit low on the leg. I would also keep in mind the structure of the shoulder girlde. I've seen this in your life drawings as well- you don't allow enough room for the clavicle, humerous and scapula to mesh together. Because there is no joint there their needs to be enough room for the muscle masses to hold the bones in place.

Great work! Keep it up.

Sealegs
May 17th, 2007, 12:00 AM
bbassir-Thanks so much for the crit, you are absolutly right... yeah i need to watch those proportions, and make stylizations look like stylizations and not mistakes...

drawings form today- some pages from imagination, last one from life..

May 17th, 2007, 07:59 AM
Hey legs, glad to see you are keeping at it.
I hope we can get that thread started for nightly sketches.
You captured a good charles, however I notice his features are sliding to the left off his face, I think construction lines will help you feel around the head, in this case the back of his head is too stretched.
Good luck sir~

May 17th, 2007, 02:27 PM
Dang, man; those heads are comin along. I recommend keepin up with the skulls, try drawing different age groups for a nice change of pace; I need to get a toned sketchbook; white paper's getting a little on the ho hum side. Haha :P

Life drawing from this morning, but wait! a bonus punk + magician!

John T
May 21st, 2007, 03:01 PM
Coming along man. Good life drawings, just some very minor proportion issues to consider.
Your imaginary characters also need a little work on proportions, namely the legs are seeming a bit on the short side, maybe this is intentional, but I'm not sure. You should also start thinking about distributing details to strengthen your designs even more, contrasting areas of lower detail with areas of higher detail, I think this could really help take things to the next level. I dig that bunny too...

TacticallyWacked
May 23rd, 2007, 01:21 PM
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! I am definatly digging your stuff as well. LOVE the floating bunny and carrots!

Your life drawing sketches are very good...how long are you spending on each pose there? Are you taking a drawing class or have a personal model?

Sealegs
May 24th, 2007, 02:26 AM
John T-Thanks for droppin by my sketchbook, your advise is of great value, about the proportions, it wans't intentional...but i also need to work on making stylizations look intentional...lots of drawing i forsee in the near future...:)

TacticallyWacked-Hey np, those were 20's i believe, it is an open model session in seattle.

TacticallyWacked- thanks alot man, glad to see you around!

This was actually just an exercise i did for this Nightly Character Workout (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1345361#post1345361)thread, i started with friend DoodlinDave. If you wanna join us go here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1345361#post1345361). I thought i would post this here also just becasue it was my first attempt at watercolor, not that i have much experince painting at all, but here it is, it will be fun to laugh at one day....

Im gonna start doing some color tutorials, but my main goal is to work on anatomy and values for the next month or so.

You always seem to capture a lot of movement and gesture in your drawings. Sometimes other people's sketches can look so still... like the person has been caught in a snapshot, but yours are full of movement and character.

Life drawings from this morning + tried to draw lightning

kateoo
July 2nd, 2007, 02:58 AM
I dig the chick with the giant robo gloves, but you probably want to work on the lightning a bit more. It looks like plasma smoke or something.

Also, is she supposed to have like 4 toes on each foot? It's hard to tell, and we can't really see her hands to find out if it's stylistic or not

ped454
July 2nd, 2007, 06:51 PM
love your style. your anatomy is near perfect and you just plain have mad skillz. your cartoon characters are my favourite because they remind me of disney films and your comic characters are fantastic. i'd love to see more coloured stuff

Sealegs
July 3rd, 2007, 04:24 AM
kateoo- thanks for the crit!, yeah i agreee i like the idea of plasma smoke tho :D the toes weren't on purpose, just my own laziness i guess, but now you got me thinking about making people with 4 fingers and toes :)

ped454- Well thanks so much, my anatomy is getting better, still alot to learn tho, I want to make more cartoon characters soon, and hopefully start some digital painting.

Ill be sure to post some more sketches later...

You have some very nice work in here. Your characters look good and have a lot of personality !!

If you'd like a crit, I'd say to try to copy smt sometime exactly as it is (life,mastercopy,...) because I see a lot of stylization in your lifedrawings. Your selfportraits come closest for now. Good observational skills help stylized work too, so it's a good skill to have. Try for once to see things as shapes, angled lines, ... and not as building blocks. Then try to combine both.

A second suggestion, is to use value and not lines to draw, with the side of charcoal or watercolor/ink, ... it's a fun excercise. Maybe add some lines afterwards if you like.

You're improving a lot, so take what I say only as a suggestion !

Keep 'em coming !!

Nightvision- thanks so much for the crit, i am still experimenting all the time, trying to see what works, so ill be ssure to keep trying shapes and values. I really do need to do some value drawings too.

Shobunkin- Thanks so much for consistantly visiting!

sealegs, do I spot a scarlett johansson up there? methinks i do. and a girl with a map tattooed on her back, have you seen "Waterworld"? Don't worry, I don't think that anybody but me has seen that movie. PLus your map looks way cooler than the movie's map.
Anyhoo, good stuff here, although I hafta agree with Cup of Joe, your faces from ref could use a bit more contrast. But hey, keep posting!

I've looked at your sketchbook a few times now after seeing your navigator posting in CHOW. You have beautifully rendered lines and fine detail work in your postings. Very nice form and dynamic life in your characters/creatures (I have to admit that I also love that Tapir on the first page of your sketchbook too). Hope your apartment move went well (just did that a month ago myself). Anyway, very inspiring sketchbook you have here. I'm anxious to see more.

... life drawings, I'm trying to actually learn and understand what is there... trying to break myself form just drawing the contours and shapes

It's interesting that you are mentioning that because lately I have been in the same boat as you. I like how you are breaking apart the figure in the last batch and trying to understanding it. I know there is no right approach, but I have been interesting in learning the approach of Bridgman and Bammes for figure construction. Are you basing yours on anyone at all?

Keep it up!

Gorgeous work, as always. No critiques, really, just an exhortation to keep it up. And I'm glad to see you've come back after that little absence. I was worried that somehow we'd lost you forever.

Some face skethes, still struggling with them, i know some of my faces look weird, they need more structure and form- a face is NOT flat- they need more life too, i need to study expressions and perspective. -

:dead: Lol -see so many problems after they are on the computer i need to think more of the necks as well!!!

:bounce:Hey guys, I’m back!!! Been a LOOOONG time, over 2 years since I last posted in my sketchbook!

Wish I could say I was drawing the entire time...:\

I kind of lost my way, lost the passion for over a year where I was doing little/no art, I forgot why art was fun in the first place...I think part of the problem was that I got a job in the game industry doing UI art, and part of my mind was like “I did it, I got a job! I'm Safe!” so I focused on the job and did nothing for myself or for personal development… This year I started to study again, and do art on my own... I have been inspired by a few friends as well as Dave Raposa and the Crimson Daggers!

I do like my job, but I don't want to do UI forever...

I debated starting a new thread because the absence has been so long...
But I think one of the best aspects of a sketchbook is the progression and being able to track progress! So I’m going to start by posting some VERY OLD stuff. I dont thinks its very good anymore but I feel some of them were significant or breakthrough pieces for me at the time, and belong in this thread...

Sweet studies, and I really like your lines and the way you break up your figures. The only thing I can think of is that you should try to play close attention to your edges. There are some moments in your digital work, mostly with the faster studies that your images could really benefit from a couple of strong hard edges. But also in this last still life, which is great by the way, the top left of the apple has a somewhat fuzzy edge. I'm telling you this because people have been telling it to me. ^^

This past weeks COW, wanted to spend a little more time on it- woulda posted it earlier but i had planned to comeback to it when i had extra time and resolve a few parts or add a ground plane/shadow, but i think im going to just move on to the next COW instead...

Concept: Skull-Crabby
In this post apocalyptic-world the skull-crabs have mutated out of human remains...because of radiation. They can be quite nasty pests, but a few children have managed to tame them as pets cause cats and dogs are extremely rare...

Hey Sealegs, amazing work. You mention that for your still painting you were following the process of a guy, I don't remember if his name was Hannes or something like that. Would you mind telling me wich process you talk about?

Thanks for the comments guys, heres another Cow, kinda unfinished again- but whatever...ill post some studies soon!

Concept: Weeping Blood Demon
This creature disguises itself as a tree to most people, only those under its control can see its true form... it mind controls the cult leader, and requires a daily ritual/feeding of blood...it was once a small creature no bigger than a dog...

Another COW
Concept: Useless Toad-beast Assistant
Weighing in at about 10 pounds, this creature is very fearful and timid, its brain is about the size of a pea so it is very forgetful…. It is afraid of anything that moves and is almost completely useless. It likes to have its belly rubbed/polished…. The alchemist has been unable to create another golden pet…looks like he is stuck with this one...
