View Full Version : Teen Challenge #28: Elemental Monster

Congrats to Orifice for winning challenge #26 with an impressive 72% of the vote. Very nice.
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic:
Elemental Monster
The goal of this topic is to design a living entity composed a particular kind of natural element (fire, ice, stone, earth, plant, etc.; not something from the Periodic Table), the kind often seen in RPGs and such. The monster can be made of any naturally occuring substance(s), but please note that this is not a creature design - for example, a lizard that lives in magma and spits fire would not count, but a lizard-shaped entity made of magma and fire would (come up with something more creative than that, though ;)) The design is the focus of this topic, but I'd encourage that you develop a scene for your entry.
The Deadline:
Monday, May 7th at midnight PST
Two weeks.
Sorry again for the delays, exam week's been pretty heavy for me. :dead:

I'm hoping to see some really wild designs out of this one. This can be taken in a ton of directions. I've chosen water myself and am hoping it's a slightly less conventional take on the typical water elemental. I've got my first under-sketch done. I'll post it once it's been cleaned up some more.
Really looking forward to two weeks from now :D

School's winding down, so I actually have time to enter this one. My first idea was this volcano-type monster.

Ahhh, but here's the catch, YOU are getting better too. Just keep trying. You'll see improvment. I've yet to win anything either, but everytime I actually take the time to get a finnished piece in, I get happier and happier with the outcome, and just keep pushing myself to try bigger and more difficult things. Practice and steping out of your comfort zone. Those are the keys to success! ... Eventually...

You're way too modest, man. Your sketchbook is incredible, you're more than qualified dish out advice here. I really appreciate that you took the time to do a paintover, you made some very good points on mistakes that I really should have put more thought into, and I'm reworking the sketch accordingly. (I can read the writing fine by the way, no need to retype it)
Your entry is looking great so far, I hope you find the time to finish it and crush us all. :)

Hey, this is what i've got so far it's obviously a wip, it's been interesting trying to get a nice textured look for the walls, if anyones got any tips with regards to this then that would be great, also the figures in the front will probably stay as silhouettes and i might a torch into the foreground anyway heres my elemental fireant, hopefully a little more impressive than the normal variety.

Well I wasn't at all happy with my original idea so here's my actual entry, the element is light/moonlight.

An encounter with The Swamp Spirit.
The Swamp Spirit has for time imemmorial (at least that's what they say) been the eternal spirit of Niku Forest, an entity that embodied all of nature, whose existence itself affected the growth, harmony and balance of all that surrounded it. Legend says that only those who care for the earth would be able to see and connect with this great spirit. The spirit is transitive, moving in between forms, sometimes as a great oak tree, and sometimes a blade of grass. Of course, none of this is confirmed, and what is known of this great being is but a web of tales spun by rumours and stories of old.

amer-nazri: Thats really cool! I really dig the colours and the creature. Few things that came to my mind to improve your piece: remove that speech buble, it kinda ruins the atmosphere imo. Secondly, maybe add more birds on top of the monsters head, some tree trunks here and there, some mist perhaps and trees to the background. Not big things but they might emphasize the atmosphere. Hope you dont mind, I love to pretend being a pro who really knows about things D:
bestow: What bunny said.
Apts: Doesn't look like an elemental monster to me. You did read the topic carefully? *waves finger*
asoir: Dunno what the hell that is but cool anyways d:
Sung-jae Kim: I think you should center the focus on the monster rather than the environment.
myalias: Nice WIP and big thanks for the tutorial even though it wasn't pointed to me directly. Gotta respect the effort you put into it. Next time use the font tool perhaps :D?
yada yada yada thanks for reading

I forced myself to do some art and thats what came out... might want to do another completely different one, though. First TCH!

This root/bark plant spirit is found everywhere where vegetation is scarce. It is a pioneer in spreading life through the deserts that gives life to hard, tough bushes and trees. After these have prepared the soil, softer, weaker plants can follow.

Some pretty sweet stuff comming in now, and I'm sad to say I've got to many massive-school-projects-of-certain-doom-that-are-gonna-get-me-failed-this-term-if-I-don't-finnish-them due this week. So, I won't be able to finnish mine. Which makes me sad, I was having fun with it. I hope to finish it afterwards but, a girl's gotta keep her priorities straight I'm afraid. :/

Well, i thought it was reasonably umm elemental as it was shooting fire (fire ant) i did originally draw it so that the ant was entirely composed of flames but i really struggled with colouring that and changed it so that it was just shooting out jets of flames, maybe i will try the original idea again so it fits in better, any tips on drawing/ colouring fire would be appreciated.

Welcome Chaichan, and.... wow, this IS a nice first post :o
Really really love this piece of art. How old are u ? (plz tell me you're at least 18 ?)
Well, I'm not very proud of myself for this one, but I wanted to be part of this round because it may be the last one for a good month (stupid schools year-end exams !)
I didn't concentrate myself enough on the elemental monster enough, but at least here it is:
-----------
Qanik is the spirit of ice and cold; He lives in the desertic land of Nunavut, wandering all day long. Few are the people who can tell they saw him, and fewer are the ones who weren't lying. A whole life wouldn't be enough to find him. But you can ever try. Who knows...
