man, super landscapes Main Loop. I need to get out and do more plein air... By the way, how are you guys photographing your paintings? I usually have to do some tweaking afterward to make them look right, which kinda feels like cheating.

Wow what a great page! I'm a total beginner at painting but I have been lurking around for some time. (will post when I reach a bearable level)
Main loop I have looked at your plen airs and I'm a big fan. Seems somehow your last paintings are much tighter and crispier, great stuff! Do some bigger ones that are more finished for me right now!!! ;)
Pancho simpsons your stuff is great also...damn tight in all aspects.
And to all of the other talents I've forgot to mention: Great stuff!

Does anybody know what happend to that guy ABCart who used to lurk here? If you haven't seen his stuff I recommend it: http://www.aaroncoberly.com/

This is such an inspiring thread! Hats off to all of you. Your work has presence, integrity and reflects the quality of your experience painting.

Pancho- that bit of red next to the tree trunk in the first painting is perfect and really makes the painting vital.

ZupZup - the horse chestnuts are so alive! What a great, vital piece of work.

Tias - I particularly enjoy looking at the garlic.

Pancho, you are growing steadily. I'm moved by the honesty in your work. You are so young and so very, very gifted. Just as I am on the verge of giving up on art and the art world, I find work on this site that brings back my faith in what a very brilliant teacher of mine, many years ago, called "the crystal spirit."

Your work makes me want to paint again.

The Lone Gunman, I look forward to seeing more! Nicely composed, sensitively painted.

And best of all- all of you are about more than surface realism. There is life in these paintings, and that's what it's all about. Not art for art's sake, but art for life's sake.

MY 7 DAY PAINTING TRIP - IN THE GREAT OUT OF DOORS -

I went on a painting trip, into the great out of doors. I had my back pack, my Easel, paint supplies and my bike. I rode around Salt Spring Island, B.C. With my Easel and backpack strapped to my back. I painted rain or shine. I did approximately 2 paintings a day, one day 3. I wanted to share some of my favorites.

Unfortunately, the quality of these are horrible compared to the live painting. The color on the computer is a lot more desaturated and extreme low quality. These will have to do for now, until I can get them professionally photographed.

Most of these are 11 x 14, a couple are 8 x 10 inches, they are all Acrylic on Masonite panels.

The 1st one was done, just before dark along the ocean side, all of the paintings were done within 1 - 2 hrs, including this one.

The 2nd one was done at 10 am in the morning, at the side of the road near a farm.

The 3rd was done also just before dark within an hr, right above the ocean.

The 4th was done, on top of a hill, looking down towards the ocean, a zoomed in view.

The 5th was done, on a mountain side, looking at a view down towards the ocean. It started to rain, it was sunny, misty and a rainbow appeared, eagles soared above my head and in the distance.

The 6th was done, atop the ocean side, standing out in the poring rain, with no cover...it started raining after about 5 mins of starting...

The 7th was done, at approximately 6am with a flashlight strapped to my head, painting in the dark, with the sun slowly rising.

The 8th was done shortly after the 7th at about 8am, I was standing right on the ocean on a bunch of rocks, with crashing waves and harsh wind blowing all around me. My easel almost blew over a couple of times. The 6th was done later the night of these two.

Main Loop - Awesome as always!

Pancho - I think you do a great job of capturing the socal light in your plein air stuff. I'm totally jealous. And the SP you posted fucking rocks!

Justin - That sounds like a really cool trip.

tias, lone gunman, zupzup, art addict, darkos, crossbow - really cool stuff all of you.

This is my first art post on these forums! These paintings are all on letter sized canvas paper, painted with a very limited palette (transp oxide red, ultramarine blue and tit white). I'm just a happy amateur but I hope you'll like these.

Here was my first oil painting I've ever done (12-6-04). I've used watercolors before this so it's not like it came out of nowhere...haha. I think the name of the model was Marla Trudine...or something like that.

I didn't know any better so the whole time I was using a needle for a brush. The yellow in the painting is from the sharpie marker I used to draw out the model...I know...newbie status. It basically bleed into the oil paint so I couldn't get rid of it. But it kinda gave it a cool look. Anyways...

Enjoy :vodkamachine:

A question for all of you: have you ever tried other approaches, just to see how methods affect outcomes?

A good exercise is to set up a simple still life and paint it several times, following a different process each time. Do one painting on duck, one on rough linen, one on board. Do a direct painting and several indirect paintings following different processes and using different mediums.

I'm a total noob here, so if it's alright, my question isn't about the painting, but photographing the work. What is the best way to light a piece so that you don't get glare from the oil in the photo image? This is just not a good representation of the piece. I have this problem a lot it seems unless I wait almost a year to photograph them. This piece would probably shoot better now, it's about 14 months old. But if anyone knows a good matte medium, besides Liquin, or a way to allow for glare in the photo shoot, please suggest one.

http://artlinkswap.org/photographing_art.shtml the two umbrella lights and tripod work best. I usually just use my digi camera so I can see what I have right away and mess with it til it looks right. Heh probably why most of my photos turn out like shit.

sfa
January 14th, 2009, 02:25 AM
I put my paintings on the ground in a small hallway and bounce a dedicated flash mounted on my digital SLR straight up. The light bounces off the ceiling, the walls, and the ground, enveloping paintings in even light. It's essentially what Blue Severin recommended except the room itself IS the umbrella (and a giant one at that).

And here's a decent workshop painting I did tonight. Limited palette of alizarin crimson, yellow ochre pale, titanium white, and ivory black. Trying to stay simple and learn the fundamentals slowly. Nice to meet everyone!

It's been awhile since I've actually done a portrait...or even touched painting for that matter. I'm still trying to teach myself so any comments or critiques are more than welcome.

I did this in about an hour and a half or something like that. I didn't even get to patch in some areas. I basically worked with a limited palette...ultramarine blue and burnt sienna with titanium white. I'm thinking about switching to cremintz or something since titanium white is really opaque.

Hi guys, been away for awhile, here's some new-ish stuff.

Also, people should remember this is a LIFE painting thread, if you didn't paint it with a model/object in front of you, don't post it.

PS. Great work Tom!

Zarahn, and Naomi, I'm very interested in how Jacobs teaches. What is the process he suggested to you?

Art_Addict
April 8th, 2009, 07:13 AM
Hello Maxine,

Although the question was not directed at me I can offer some insights.
In terms of technique, the process is quite simple. For finished paintings Ted primarily teaches a charcoal drawing on canvas followed by inking in the lines. Then a wash-in (fully colored underpainting) followed by an opaque layer in as few passes as possible. Ted usually paints quite thinly with rater fluid paint in order to move wet patches of paint easily into one another. Important for 'shaping' the modeling.

But this material process is just info on the side. Imo what separates Ted as a teacher and as an artist is his authority on the understanding of the structure of living form. And his ability to constantly question the visual information we receive. Students are constantly pushed to question everything, to always search for the 'why' and to not make assumptions about how things appear. It proves to be quite a daunting task but if pursued, results in a conscious raising experience. To me, Ted is a unique teacher and I highly recommend studying with him. I hope this answers your question somewhat. More info can be found in his books. Ted's new book ' A dictionary of human form' that will be released soon, I think will give a good representation of how he tackles the subject of structure while he teaches.

Maxine - he is part of the French Academic tradition. The flowering tree lineage (basically an artist's family tree of teacher to student) goes back to the Academie Julienne if I remember correctly and all the way back (eventually) to Michelangelo. The academy in Florence also hosts this style. It is well-thought out, most of all effective at making an artist out of anyone. Pretty amazing shit tbqh....

Bougeaureau, Jean-Leone Gerome and so forth studied and taught in this epic style.

It incorporates a plethora of really cool techniques to get your mind onto your canvas, so to speak. :)

Now I didn't study under Jacobs - I studied under his student, Kathryn Manzo - she studied both in France and in New York before he moved away back to France. :)

There's a big list of ateliers over at artrenewal.org.

peace

edit:

Oops didn't see you respond Art Addict, well put!

Another thing I remember is Jacobs doesn't like artificial light...and opinions on the core French Academic values vary WIDELY....one teacher may disagree with another...but they are all "right" :)

... Ted is not a part of a French academic tradition in the sense that he continues to teach such methods. That information is a bit misleading.
In fact after his studies at the Art Students League Ted revised a lot of the methods he was taught. He found much of them to be artificial, not corresponding to what he saw in Nature, and he developed his own methods.
The flowering staircase which I think you are referring too is a genealogy of Painter/teachers and their students that was put together by Tim Stotz, another student of Ted. Here's a link to it : http://www.studioescalier.com/image/flower1A.html (http://www.studioescalier.com/image/flower1A.html)

The methods of the Florence ateliers are all centered around a sight-size approach. Again, this is not how Ted teaches. Nor does he work in the 19th century style of Bouguereau or Gerome.

Another thing I remember is Jacobs doesn't like artificial light...

... Natural light makes a broader color range visible. In Ted's studio I think, students work under natural light yes, but at the same time Ted has himself made many paintings under artificial light.... he doesn't advises against it per se...

This is more of a general response, and I don't want to sidetrack the thread, but this is an important point to make. Tom is absolutely right, in that Ted is not following the Ecole des Beaux Arts tradition. To be honest, no one teaches the way Bouguereau or Gerome taught. Sight-size was not taught there.

Here's a painting of ol' Boug's atelier at Julian's

http://www.flickr.com/photos/maulleigh/2895271214/

note that the model is raised, and not at eye level....the easels are slightly at an angle, and there's no room to practice sight size as it is preached today. People occasionally put the canvas next to the model when painting portraits for easy comparison. But they did not use the silly procedures people use today, like using the same shoes to not affect height, etc. It was a tool not a method.

It's important to keep these things in perspective and not be star struck by the propaganda of following the "methods of the masters". Lineage means very little...it's like the 6 degrees of separation thing. I study with Glenn Vilppu, and we can trace "lineage" back to as far as any atelier can, since Bridgman is in the line and he studied with Gerome. So, same lineage, but what is taught in class is vastly different. Maybe 19th century painters could trace their lineage back really far too, but they were just as in the dark as we are about how the Old Masters actually worked.

I hope this clears up some misconceptions, I've done a lot of research on the subject and would encourage anyone who's interested to do likewise.

EDIT: Here's an interior (sorry for the bad picture) and a plein air in progress

Nice Tom. I like the quiet mood, and particularly the handling of the leftmost tree. However, I would like to offer some thoughts for improvement. The handling feels a bit weak and thin (except for the foreground trees). Part of it is that I think you matched the color of certain "color fields", like the ground...or the sky, and spread it over the whole area. This is too simplified an approach, even for quick studies. The reason is that for example, the ground, is composed of varying rocks, different kinds of dirt, etc. To indicate nature's variety in this respect, you need a more broken touch, mixing slightly varying colors and applying them solidly and crisply, then leaving them alone. The same can be said of the expanse of grass and the background trees.

One of the most important things in landscape is atmosphere, and sharing colors around the canvas helps this a lot. For instance, the trees are composed of numerous leaves pointing in different directions, some reflecting more or less of the sky according to their angle. Thus, they partake of the sky's color somewhat. Same for the grass, same for certain rocks or whatever on the ground. Right now, you're thinking of the elements too separately, while you should be keeping the big impression and the interaction of these elements in mind. Mixing your colors less would help with this too...as color vibration is an effective means of replicating the nature of light outdoors.

http://www.allpaintings.org/d/100962-1/John+Singer+Sargent+-+A+Game+of+Bowls_+Ightham+Mote_+Kent.jpg

note how Sargent maintains brush movement and color fluctuations that suggest the complexity of the grass.

Life is full of surprises, Ramon. Your passion and seeing your paintings is helping me to get back to my own work, so we are really supporting each other.

For your outdoor paintings, try reading the chapter on landscape in "Hawthorne on Painting." Be sure to see spots of color and let the color make the form. I think you are missing some of the warm/ cool contrasts in parts of the foliage. Squint. Usually warm and cool alternate in both shadow and light areas.

Hawthorne says, "there is nothing as surprising as truth."

Aarghmisfit, the lemon painting (with the silver creamer) is really a first rate effort. However, more attention to exact matching color would help the cloth and shadow. It's all about warm/cool.
In the painting above it, the green drapery doesn't work because you needed to look more...it's not local color that interests us, but the color we actually see which is affected by lighting, reflection etc. In nature adjacent colors usually change temperature (sometimes you'll find warm/warm or cool/cool but rarely). Try looking from the color you are searching for to other colors in the set up and then back to the color you need to find. You can never "see" a color by looking at it alone...scan. By the way, the figure has good gesture and a feeling of "life."

Hi,

This week has seen a return to watercolour and a return to landscape. It's been a little while and I thoroughly enjoyed putting this watercolour together today. I absolutely love these sort of days, of which there are plenty up in the north of Scotland - bright sunlight, heavy rains, high winds. Dynamic weather indeed.

Above is a little detail of the cottages from the painting - I really enjoyed the way the form of the buildings is thrown out by the dark clouds behind and the shadowed hillside in the middle ground - great fun! More to follow I'm sure...

thanks!

Ramon, have you tried using warm and cool blues and warm and cool yellows (including ochre) and mixing your own greens? As you already know, I'm sure, most color in nature is broken color and will be a mix of red yellow and blue. It's amazing how much of a lawn, (or the leaves on a tree), is not green at all!

Maxine: I use a double primary palette and mix my own greens for the most part, though I have recently added viridian. I will keep a lookout for the warmer notes. Thanks for the advice!

Teena: Thanks :) The water is painted mostly with the knife, although I did go over it with the brush when it was dry. It still needs a lot of work, so I might have another go at it with the knife.

Showing the time may give a potential customer a certain mentality, an opposite one to what they might think if you for example had a 40 hour painting shown. Putting the time may keep them from noticing just the quality of art it is and may instead break it into some hourly wage kind of thought.

I agree that they are way underpriced, but I understand your position with the economy.

dTb

I guess there is a point there, if a viewer operates under the impression---as do many people these days---that time invested=harder work=more value. However, this mindset fails to recognize that each new work is informed by everything that's preceded it. Each new painting could be 20+ years of cumulative experience in addition to all the study of master paintings, reading, material expenses. Many people might not recognize that, though.

Lawrence Humphrey

Exactly what The Pariano and dTb said, your work is fantastically good but when people see "1 1/2 hours" they'll think "Ah, no wonder it's only $40."

There is an implication here that Pariano and dTb are in full agreement, but I think dTb points out a nuance that is worth mentioning. Not to be putting words in dTb's mouth, so these are my words: not showing the time for fear that it devalues the piece panders to the uninformed viewer who believes that time=money and therefore time=value.

In art, as should be true in all things, quality=value, beauty=value, or, in the world of illustration, on-spec and on-time = value.

The longer a painter works, the better he becomes at his own personal shorthand, and can produce paintings more efficiently. Should he lie and say he's still taking as long or feel like he has to lower his prices because he's able to produce the same quality of work in less time? I think no.

It's an interesting topic. Probably unfit for this thread though, so I guess I'll stop rambling....

The Pariano
August 20th, 2009, 01:00 AM
should he lie? No. He should just not tell how long the work took to complete to any potential customer. At least not to one that is not some sort of artist him/herself. It is an interesting topic, and perhaps not fit for this thread, but definitely for this section- or possibly art discussion.

I've been drooling over this thread for the past hour or so...I hit it at just the right time too, as I've been looking for some advice with painting from life.

Does anyone have an general suggestions on how to begin? If that makes sense? As in is it advisable to start with a certain kind of limited pallet? To shoot for under a certain time? Anything, just general tid bits!

Wow! I wish I had enough talent to draw beautifully like you do.

The ability to draw beautifully is a skill which is gained by study and practice. Stick around, read the site, get involved, practice, put up a sketchbook, and in a couple of years people will be telling you too, that they wish they were talented like you :)

Two drawings i did in a life drawing class. The second is bigger, older (maybe more than six months) and took 10X more time to be done than first one. About the discussion of time=value in art, i think the 10 minute piece have much more value than the 1 hour, if i look for a thought behind the art piece.

Hey guys, some awesome and inspirational stuff on this thread. I have been oil painting for about a year when I get the free time, something I definitely want to continue to do and commit to further. Starting to feel like I'm getting the hang of this, of to do another one :) cheers!

Actually I am mostly self-taught. I studied Illustration here in Germany, but my school was pretty crappy (considering fine art). If you want a good starting point, take a look at these books, in there is everything you need:

http://www.amazon.com/Fill-Your-Paintings-Light-Color/dp/1581800533/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269278384&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Proven-Strategy-Creating-Great-Art/dp/1929834195/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

Wow, that book from McCaw increased in price. That thing was 25 $ or so, when I bought it. Anyway, the book from MacPherson will suffice. If you want to spent some more money on painting books I would go for "Alla Prima" from Richard Schmid. A bit pricy, though. But those 2 will totally be enough for a really good foundation.

First one was an hour and a half, second about an hour, and the last two probably around 70 to 80 minutes.

Hey man nice paintings. I like the emotion in them, you can tell they are from life.

My only problem is the first portrait. That far side of the face and eye is not turning in space. I think you have made it slightly too large. I think I spotted it as it is something I have struggled with a lot too, I often miss it due to the amount of time staring at a work. Hope that helps! Otherwise great work!! Keep it up.

R.J.O., Your light and dark separation and overall structure are looking good. There are only two thing that I think you need to work on. I do not think that your hair is all so black without any light hitting the surface. I also think you should start playing with colors a little more, unless that was a monochromatic study like a closed grisaille.

Here's a recent figure grisaille.

Your still lifes are getting so good! There's a ton of improvement from page one to now and this isn't so much you as the paper, I love the texture of the paper with the brick. It has a rough, kind of similar feel to it as you'd find with rocks so I think it actually really suits it. Wow that sounded cheesy haha.

But yes, you're doing amazing and I can't wait to see more.

I just spent all morning going through all 58 pages of these, and and I must say I am greatly impressed. So many of you are excellent artists, and I hope to be on your level someday!

So here are a few of my life-drawings/paintings:

The first is my first oil painting, done at the end of my freshman year of College, and the second is a photo of the set up for that painting. I am sorry that the painting appears to not match the colors of the still life..it was photographed under different lighting conditions unfortunately.

The third is a Black and White interior still life done with Prismacolor Nupastels near the beginning of my freshman year of College.

The fourth is a still life done in Adobe Illustrator near the end of my freshman year of College.

I have returned from an exhausting week in Carmel. I participated in the Carmel Art Festival, one of the most prestigious plein air events in Northern California. This event attracts some of the best plein air artists from around the country, as far as Maryland and Florida even. From what I understand, it is very competitive and tough to get into, so I was delighted when I found out I had been accepted after my first time applying. Knowing what the competition is like, I came into it a little nervous. I must admit I am never nervous before these plein air events because I feel equal amongst my peers in most every event I’ve participated in. In this event, however, many of the painters I look up to and follow their work avidly, like Thomas Kitts, Larry Moore, and Paul Kratter. To be participating in an event with painters of this caliber is quite the honor. Nevertheless I arrived in Carmel psyched up and ready to paint landscapes harder than I have before.

DAY 1:

I started off the day by checking in to the event. There are a lot of rumours and input from artists and onlookers about this event. I guess it can’t be helped given the prestigious nature of the event. I won’t delve into all of that, but I will say that I knew what to expect. Therefore, the impersonal way they treated the participating artists didn’t much phase me.

I arrived to a fair amount of fog on the peninsula, so to escape it, I drove down to Garland Ranch Park down in the valley. This is actually a composite of two different views. I liked the light I was able to evoke in this painting, but I still have yet to satisfactorily depict middle-ground forests. I like parts of this painting but most of it is a dud to me.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3MCM9fjPiDA/T7ryGAY7TxI/AAAAAAAAHnc/kERfS3uX_z8/s1600/Carmel+Art+Festival+398.jpg

DAY 2:

I woke up bright and early to journey down to Big Sur. So many amazing views of the coast makes it hard to chose something that hasn’t been done a million times. I tried to choose a point of view that isn’t too typical. The fog started off quite dramatic, but by the end it had mostly burned off. I think the most successful part of this painting is the sense of atmospheric distance I was able to pull off in the seacliffs.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6QMttodCqGI/T7rxcnNcDtI/AAAAAAAAHms/QfawmF3u2eo/s1600/Carmel+Art+Festival+223.jpg

This part of Big Sur is so incredibly dramatic and scenic that I knew I would have to choose something that wasn’t obvious or else I would end up doing a painting that would look like 3 other ones in the show. I picked a view that was possible the least dramatic, yet most simple compositionally, giving me a chance to play with texture and everything else. I really like how the texture in the foreground came out(doesn’t read as well on the computer screen unfortunately). Had I spent more time finessing the shapes of the trees into a more pleasing design, I would have put this one in the show for sure. Also, I would have unified the color of the ground with the color of the sky better. I took reference shots, so I will revisit this painting in the future.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rqn67OXHIBA/T7rxrUQY1eI/AAAAAAAAHm8/bZnGMIu-svs/s1600/Carmel+Art+Festival+393.jpg

This is a painting that just barely didn’t make the cut. It was an awesome view, and I think I captured the color of the scene pretty accurately. I also had fun with the palette knife work in the grass. It can be argued that I should have put it in, instead of the next one, but I think I am going to keep this one around as a study until I do a large painting of this scene.

It was about 3 pm by the time I finished these paintings, and I had pretty much out-painted myself by this point. I did a couple of wipers afterwards then called it a day.

DAY 3:

It was a beauuuutiful day at Point Lobos on Friday. Today was the day to make sure I painted something that really went for the gusto, so I purposely chose something ridiculously tough to paint. This was at the end of the North Point trail looking southward at the trail. There were a lot of painters at Point Lobos at this time, and I chose this view because I didn’t see anyone else painting something like this. I spent a good 3 hours, with my ass on some rock, hunched over, painting this scene. Between the hiking, the concentration, and the physical/mental demand of painting this scene, it drained me of my ability to paint for the rest of the day. I attempted to do another one later on in the day, but it wasn’t happenin’.

We had to bring our paintings in between 6 and 8 pm. Now it was the chance to see what everyone else had done and determine where this young upstart-noob stood among these seasoned veteran painters. There were some amazing paintings turned in! Some eye-poppers. Now was the chance to simultaneously relax and pick up whatever ego I had off the floor. I found it overall to be a very strong show. I went afterwards to have some food and beers at Clint Eastwood’s restaurant with Paul Kratter and Timon Sloane.

DAY 4:

I took a bunch of photos of the show in the morning. I put them together in this little video

If you want to check them out individually, you can also check out this album here: Carmel Art Festival Exhibited Paintings on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150966786296282.472904.134969141281&type=1)

Once I saw everyone else’s work, I went and painted at the beach to get myself a new painting to exhibit for the next day in case anything sold in the silent auction that evening. I tried to pull together all the motivation and inspiration I could put together from the last few days. I found this awesome little semi-secluded cove in Pebble Beach that had a shallow pool. The shallowness of the water turned the sand underneath a neat green-blue color that I tried to capture. So many different colors in the sand! I had a blast painting this one. I think it’s my best painting of the event. Almost sold it, even.

I went back to the exhibition to mingle with the artists and check out who won what awards. My favorite painting of the event, This painting by Stacey Barter (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/150127_10150966792396282_134969141281_12283535_122 9668851_n.jpg) was my favorite of the event, and it won two awards: Mayor’s choice, and Best Oil Painting. Rightfully so! There was also a nice little bidding war on the piece. Thomas Kitts stunningly painted this tree. (https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/536762_10150966787141282_134969141281_12283467_848 019694_a.jpg) He was able to sell this one, but the buyer got a great deal on it. Newcomer Gretha Lindwood was a hit in the Silent Auction! (https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/546340_10150966788166282_134969141281_12283474_158 4330908_a.jpg) There was a patron determined to own both paintings. Wish we all could be so lucky! Speaking of fortune, my friend Carole Gray-Weihmann sold both of her paintings (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/150398_10150966795061282_134969141281_12283559_203 713524_n.jpg)and snagged an honorable mention! Nice job!

DAY 5:

The event was not quite over. To end the event, we participated in the famous (and intimidating) quick draw. Most events have 3 hour “quick draws” which is the amount of time most painters spend on a painting anyways. With two hours to pick a spot, paint a finished piece, frame it, and put it up, it is truly a quick-draw! I quickly found this intimate little spot lit up beautifully in the morning. I was going to try to add the people, but they wouldn’t stick around long enough to paint them. Still, I am fairly satisfied with this painting, given it was about 1.5 hrs. worth of work.

Here's a short video of the quick-draw display

The weather was unbelievable during the weekend! I was really anxious to find out if the weather would be good or as miserable as it had been during the last few years. The sun shined most of the time we spent painting there, luckily.

I’d say this event is only for the dedicated professionals. The pressure of the event would make most casual plein air painters fall on their brush-handles. I found the competition to be extremely motivating. It’s really set the bar in terms of skill to strive for, so I am determined to take that energy into the rest of the plein air season to reach a new level. And now… time for some sleep!
