Geeze, you guys are cranking out some great stuff. I painted a self portrait last week, had goggles and a towel and became a "Flying Ace." Costuming could have been better, but it was more fun than just straight up drawing myself.

It's been a while since I have checked out this site and thread. The thread does seem to be dying. Anyways, I really enjoy all of the great ideas and artwork on Concept Art. Here is my recent contribution.
http://adamcarnes.com/link2art/dante-web.jpg
Brittons- nice work. I would like to see some more attention to detail. I do like some of the loose brush strokes.
Seedling- on the head shot painting: a little flat. More contrast and rendering of form. Cropping bugs me a little. I think that it is the ear and neck. The angles and foreshortening seem off slightly. If you rendered it more, it would be a decent painting.
on the bread painting: I like the simplicity. Good work.
N.L.R. Survivor- very flat and bad proportions. You need to study your anatomy and do a lot of life drawing/painting. For example, the arm has a sausage look. Use more paint and work faster. I don't know how long you spent on the painting, but it looks like you are being very timid with the paint. Also, do more gesture drawings too.
Blue Severin- your style is good. Although, it looks like you need to push the paintings more. Some areas lack information.
orionlesc- I like the pose. the fingers and arm need to be rendered more. The ear ring is not quite a circle. The ear lacks information. basically needs more work.
Blue Severin- on the first painting, on this page: Very nice. I like this one the best. needs a little more work.
puckdewd- looks good. decent piece.

le_fish- I like your style. Your use of color and brush strokes work very well. I like the looseness of the bottom painting. It has a degas feel. I like the style of the face on the top painting. I feel that the bottom of it starts to get lost though. Good studies.

Hi Allejo, nice quick painting.
I am also one of those to whom appeals the idea of not using black in painting, but rather mixing brown and blue (e.g. burnt umber and ultramarine blue or some other combination), even though there are many great artists who do use black (I wonder whether Rembrandt used it, because of all that black and dark in his paintings). I also like to get those neutral greyish tones by mixing green and red and stuff like that instead of just mixing black and white. That way, black is not just black, but it looks richer. Same for the greyish tones. But then again, I might not be the person to talk about these things since I have only done watercolor and some acrylics (but also in a watercolor way mostly) and never touched oils (would like to, no doubt).
the_allejo05
November 2nd, 2006, 05:03 AM
Miljenko..well I do use black..just not for this..:) , I was searching for my complementary colors and wanted to see how this two colors reacted with one another....and well i ended up just dissing this brown and blue..I have a better combo hehe.. I always like the advice of Manet , that without black painting is not a painting..even though I like the rich blacks, grays done from complementary colors ,still those contain colors and black is the total absence of light and having that neutrality plays a nice balance with colors.. IM still trying to find the right black ..although im pretty much settle..I still would advice you to learn to paint with black, all the old masters did..and as you mentioned rembrand he did use a blue black and ivory black (i think), very very limited palettes for all of them (when painting with a limited palette you'll be surprised how much black is an aid to get those gray tones)..although the reinassance had a richness of color unmatched (look for Titian )...the concept of the impressionists is right, no black in light..remember there were searching for light and color and black is the enemy of that..but for an object to be fully threedimentional you have to have light and dark. white(all the 7 colors of the rainbow) and black, we painters use black to represent that absence of light.. remember that most animals see in black and white..we are the privilege ones who can sense color..

AztcFireFlower excellent studies...but something which i have noticed from your work..hmm I think you are still thinking of concepts too much while you paint..or draw..you see..to critique you on your paintings..your thinking of matching tones and shapes and angles and geometries..constructions..but your are forgetting your painting an eye which is moist,a nose used to smell, a bumby fleshy mouth to eat, a hair so soft that feels like silk and a flesh so tender under bones that we humans are so weak for :)..try to be more sensible to outlines..feel them....because i see too many straight lines ON those heads/figures..look at the masters not a single straight line, look at the human figure not a single one...one advice i heard from a good painter..You are what you paint.. if you paint hair become a hair..if you paint clouds become a cloud ,if you paint shadow become one..I now that in order to get to the level of feeling your concepts should be done thoughlessly (im talking about construction, perspective, anatomy, etc and the eye/hand coordination excellent ) but is nice to once in a while feel the subject, feel the weight of the mass..your not painting or drawing your are creating ...

I felt he last painting was not ideal, too and I guess it because I made several things up by myself.
I always enjoy your drawings and paintings.
I am always thinking about doing digital painting from life but the first thing is the color temperature peoblem. Since the LCD and the setting has distinct light sourse, LCD is self-luminescence, and the color temperature is very high. The light source for model is usually tungsten light. The tungsten light's color temperature is very low. I believe it is a big challenge with tablet PC.

thanks mainloop, I dont really think its a bad jpg, its just how its painted, It looks completely fine when your about 5feet away, but up close you can see all the harsh edges and crap.
so on this one i tried to rectify that alittle and my brushwork was pretty sporatic and chaotic. but worked out okay I think, maybe next time i'll try to merge both of the styles and that might work out good..

Hello this is a figure painting I birthed.
I took a photo(with a manual camera) and painted this in grid scale.. or black and white scale... i tried.. I a bit timid about going to color.. my good friend knows how to paint to paint in color with figures.. I have been making more pop art these days...much like Ross Bleckner.. so I've been told.
I would like to go back to painting a portrait...not of myself ..possibly painting myself would be narrassitic ..? yes? no? I have some photo graphs I'd like to upload also taken of a model...
Also can anyone help me with the avatar thing...the image size will not adjust from pdf format ..into jpg...it stays about 1600 mega bites or so...then i adjust it in photoshop and saveas and it will not make the change. Any idea's?
I hope this uploads i've had no success with my avatar...
comments and critiques welcome.. Rigney
Also could some one help me figure out my "bug" I have my the file of my painting saved at 640 KB...then I proceed to go into photoshop to alter my image size to 411 KB...I believe the file asks for jpegs to be under 500KB..then I don't want to get into all of the bizarre feedback it gave me relating to why my file will not translate.. I have a mac..does this make any sense...I will ask for my friends help soon...he has training in 3-D graphics..ect...I'm just looking to learn from this site... I'm not a pro...like him....
O.k. hope this posts R.R.
O.k. I have posted a photo out of sheer exhaustion...it's a photo...so I apologize it's not in the photo gallery..if anyone will help me I'll post my black and white figure nude..as well can someone help me with avatar?

Hi Richard,
and welcome to the forums.
I took a photo(with a manual camera) and painted this in grid scale
Just to save you some trouble, this particular thread is intended for paintings done from the live model....i.e. not from photographs....however, there are plenty of other places in the forum in which to post images based on photographs. In regards to your questions about posting, try going to photoshop and using the save to web feature on your images, then outputting a jpeg file. Btw, painting a self portrait is not narcissistic.

This is my attempt at a figure painting somewhat completed. I went to art school and took figure drawing and design and space form material. I then transfered to a college in Illinois. The teacher suggested we pose for each other in class which I think is a bit awkward. I managed to find a model on my own and paint this despite my teachers not finding figure models for us to work from.
I thought I may be accepted here. My friend says concept means something you have not seen before..I suppose that does not matter if it is representational or not.. my latter sketch is abstract. My friends support me even though I would be grouped with "fine" artists and not illustrators...my closest friends at the Institute in Milwaukee where designers in interior architecture and industrial design mainly illustration...
I just encompass a large taste spectrum. Actually i would probably do some more figure painting but I don't have anyone to paint but myself..guess I could try a portrait of myself? I may be able to take a figure drawing class around here a UW...but I really don't want any more female models..which is probably what I'll get.. do know what I look like..all I've had through out college have been female models...why that is I don't know why..it's not split ratio wise. Mainly it's been a money issue finding people to pose...so I went into what could be termed possibly "pop" art..they are only sketches..thumnails for possible paintings...the quality is not as good seeeing they are colored pencil and not oil yet....
If I do go about painting a portrait or self-portrait are there any forums on how to use color to start vs...painting grayscale and then glazing over?
I was critiqued my a yale"ie" masters graduate she suggests I have similar style to Ross/Russ Bleckner...has anyone heard of this artist before?
I hope I get some inspiration and feedback on these pieces...suppose I'll understand if I'm not liked. I am a women and I"m married to someone that does illustration and 3-D graphics..he says he does "enjoy" my work.his he prejudice? I need to know if other people that do things that my husband do still can get some satisfaction out of my "art"
About my name Richard Rigney~ that was my biological fathers name..he was a photographer..it's a tribute and maybe and alias
Thanks for looking _chris

Man, this one rocks balls. I frigging love it, they have such a wonderful tangible quality to them, my fave is the avocado. the one thing that takes away from it is that blobby brown thing at the bottom, I kinda wish the blue cloth kept going.
Seedling: Great structure to those trucks, but they seem on a whole a little bit flat. Was it a real overcast and foggy day? Me thinks some high chroma yellow in the right places would really make the pop out!

Hi Brittons,
You have a good handle on two things I noticed.
"it's lightest next to the dark and darkest next to the light," and
"Have at least one blur area in the painting", that's where two objects have the same value and the line between them can be blurred.
When there is some contrast between two objects, as in most cases, I would sharpen the contour line so my eye won't get hung up on unreasonable jagged edges.

Thanks Don... I checked out your site. That color wheel is blowing my mind! I think my brain has leaked out onto my left shoulder. That's some serious analysis/discipline and was interesting to read through.
Yeah, hard edges are a tough thing to judge and it's interesting to hear a viewers take on it. Thanks for the critique. Personally, I'm sort of at a loss for what to do for the background on some of these. I can paint drapery, and when I made that portrait with the green background, I gave it the mental "thumbs up" and left the background obscure/painterly, but looking at it now, it seems perhaps a bit haphhazard. I think I just need to find more time to paint in natural light and would see areas like this a bit more directly.

Thanks Brittons,
Color is everything. Mix your darks, instead of using black pigment use the correct complements.
Here are the true complements, according to the Real Color Wheel.
http://www.realcolorwheel.com/complementsneutral.htm
http://www.realcolorwheel.com/watercolors.htg/selfWC1990autocontrastWPcurves8x10.jpg
On your paintings I can see every place you used black pigment as the dark and to darken colors. They stand out, giving colors a pall and turning yellow into green. And don't use the red, yellow and blue color wheel, it's been wrong for a very long time.
I paint a lot of paintings with just the transparent primaries. the three of them together mix a perfect neutral dark.
http://www.realcolorwheel.com/3colors.htg/3colorapple600.jpg
Here's the whole story in a link.
http://www.realcolorwheel.com/3colors.htm
When you use the primaries plus secondaries together, you get to use opposition complements. Like transparent magenta with transparent green, burnt umber (dark yellow) and ult blue, and, cad red with cyan. It's a beautiful thing!

Yipes! I NEVER use black in my darks. It's not even on my pallate! The darks in my paintings are probably gotten through some sort of cad red, phthalo blue, raw umber sort of thing, depending on what I'm seeing I guess. I agree that black is an ugly way to get darks.
donjusko
October 21st, 2007, 02:41 AM
I'm sorry Brittons, I shouldn't jump to conclusions. It's this RGB computer thing, it's so limited in color.
It happens when I'm printing also, CMYK jumps to black too soon. One of my watercolors looks like I might have used black in the hair, but I didn't.
What is the second color you dropped out of your palette? In watercolors it was Naples yellow, because it got darker when it dried.
Here is my last painting, 6:30 in the morning, 8 days in a row, same spot. The sun came up earlier each morning by 5 minutes. A half hour later the colors and shadows were completely different.

I'm a beginner and looking to improve my painting skills through life painting, wondering can anyone answer some of these questions?...
Firstly, where do you go to paint from life?
do you start with a set pallete of colours? should i limit myself to using a set amount of colours? should i immediatly block in my darks and lights and work from there, or gradually build form from a general tone? I'm inspired by everyones artwork! you guys are amazing! thankyou!
incolorinred
November 3rd, 2007, 10:20 PM
emi_middleton, you have asked many good questions. let me answer them one by one.
-painting (or drawing) from life can be from any model, object, or space in the world. "From life" implies that you have created a work from the act of observation. If you are new to painting then I recommend starting with a simple still life. It will give you a chance to get experience before dealing with harder projects like landscapes, figures, or interior spaces.
-when I started painting, my teacher started me out with a basic palette known as a "dead" palette. It consists of just three colors: flesh ochre, yellow ochre, and blue black (other combinations can work too) . With these three primaries, you will be able to reproduce a wide variety of colors and it will give you a sturdy building block before expanding your palette further. Of course, you will also need a white. I prefer flake white to the other whites, but it is really preference.
-Yes, you generally do want to paint the whole form rather than the exterior lines like one would start to do in pencil drawing. I suggest doing an underpainting first. To do this, mix a neutral tone and cover the entire canvas with it. Then use a paper towel to rub paint off the areas of your composition where the lights are. Re-apply paint to dark areas as needed and go back and forth between painting and taking away. With this technique you'll be able to create a monochromatic painting which will serve as a blueprint, so to speak, of your composition. I think you'll find underpainting the most fun part of the project, because after that is when the mistakes start to happen!

If we're talking oils, I'd use one of the umbers, simply because they dry relatively quickly and they're cheap.

November 13th, 2007, 04:39 PM
Hi deepbluehue,
It was painted alla prima in two sessions. The first was just to lay in the forms and also to see what would happen as I had left this particular canvas un-primed and haven't painted on un-primed before. In the second session I worked with a lot more paint on the brush, I use lead white quite alot as it doesn't kill the colour in the same way titanium can so you can really load it up in the lights. I sometimes use glazes, but mainly in the backgrounds.

You use a scanner? Big scanner or small paintings? The landscape is wonderful,
although both paintings are a bit hard to view at once at their current size.

Good one, pancho, especially lovin' the passages in the ducky's bowl, the eggs' reflection, and the textures of the big cast shadow on the right, very Brandywine.

Yes, acrylics they are, of the student quality variety.

MidgardSerpent, I like your paintings on the cardboard. I would suggest to you that you invest more in your materials. An art store should carry some better quality cardboard. The rigid cardboard on the back of drawing pads is nice as well. I say this because I think the creases in your board are taking away from your paintings.

You raise a fair point about the quality of materials. As a matter of fact I recently asked around for some information on acrylics paints. Since I started painting I've been working with student quality paints, but this week I ordered six 500ml bottles of professional quality acrylics. The prices are very, very hefty though. Trust me, I'll be using proper boards for those paints. :)
Regarding the crappy cardboards, my mindset at the time was making a series of speedpaints. Mileage, personal compulsion, and study as prioritities, materials coming second place, so I didn't feel the crappy cardboards were really detrimental to my short term goals. Although my original goal of
doing a bunch of speedpaints didn't really pan out for various reasons, one of them being that I'm very slow.

hey marco, nice painting! If you're looking for suggestions, don't focus so much on detail next time and go for the overall shape of things, simplify what you see and strive for correct value and color. Right now it's hard to tell where the light is coming from, as the values do not clearly indicate this. Also, it looks like you were painting during a sunny day, which means there would be a lot more contrast, and your lights would tend to be yellow-ish, while the darks would be blue/purple-ish. Keep it up!

Hi everyone, Great paintings in this thread, Mainloop I like a lot of your life paintings.
Last weekend was the first time I went outdoors to paint, This is my first painting from life:
314996
Edit: some more information:
Its Oil on canvas its about 12x9, its on a 12x18 canvas but I started working from the bird house and I only covered about half the canvas.
The canvas was pre primed on a roll, I stretched it and I didn't add another layer of primer, I started painting then wiped it all off with some turpentine to get a yellowish tone on the canvas (I didn't do this on purpose it just happed to work out that way) The pallet consisted of ;
Cadmium Lemon
Cadmium Yellow Deep
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red
Alizarin crimson
Transparent Red Oxide
Viridian
Terra Verte
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue Deep
Titanium White
I still don't know how to mix my paints I started doing color charts but I only did 2 of them, This painting was a spur of the moment thing where I just figured I'd wing it... and I just blended colors together on the pallet until I got something that was close enough to what I thought I was seeing...
It was some very crazy weather... at first it was sunny then after about an hour all of a sudden it turned to stormy weather and a blizzard came out of no where for about 20 minutes.. then It lightened up again... Then all of a sudden the blizzard came back.. and we decided to leave because it was way too cold outside.. It was very tough to paint because the light kept changing.

Flamedragon: thanks man, although I'm not a fan of the first still life I posted that time :)
Marco: your work got much better, nicely done! I especially like the first one. Since these seem to be painted when the sun is out, you need to increase the contrast between the lights and the darks, plus all your highlights should have a yellow-ish tint due to the sun, while the shadows will have a bluish/purplish influence...also, looks less at detail and paint with bigger brushes, focusing on the major masses/values.

Great thread, I love seeing the life painting. I started my second life painting today. It's very different from portrait painting, I really enjoyed trying to figure out all the colours. Here's the start, I'll sort the head out on the next session and really start working into the anatomy a bit more. I've also posted a image showing the three stages in a portrait I finished recently. It was over three 3 hour sittings.

comp & painting. fond of the composition, the technique threw me off a little - the first sitting we were supposed to use the paint "like watercolor" so lots of medium but no white. the goal was to get the brightest hues possible. the second sitting we could paint opaquely with white.. it could use more work, methinks, but a good exercise.

stephen: the structure reads really well, although the color is not as nice as in other portraits that you've posted.
catofglass: Nice , although I would say that most of the colors are too saturated, and the edges are too hard. However, I really like the composition, keep at it!
Here's a skull from life, I tried to focus on value, drawing and edges rather than color, so it was done in burnt umber, white and black. sorry for the glare, I'll post another pic if I can.

Here's a couple that I've done this week. I just set-up a little oil painting corner in a spare room and these are my first paintings in five years. It's definitely this site that influenced me to get started again. I got the idea of painting the paint tube from Coro's posts earlier in the thread. It's nice to do art away from the computer. It feels more real. I hope my beginnerish attempts don't sully this thread too much.

Mainloop nice job with that last head! the body looks too small though. You might also want to really punch up the contrast in your plein air work to get that nice sunny feeling, also, the figure would be stronger if there were some cools mixed in too, especially considering that blue couch she's reclining on.
Exema: phenomenal values on that skull! Are you applying a thin, grayed out color to the shadow area over a light yellowish ground? I've been trying to do that too, you notice it a lot in 19th century artists, but also in Rockwell, Rembrandt, etc....I just saw it in a bunch of paintings at the LA county museum of art, makes things look very convincing:) I would recommend making the different planes of the cheek (as it transitions into the zygomatic arch) more apparent, and also re-studying the outline on the left side, the transition from the cheek to the muzzle of the face creates a bigger dent in the outline from that angle....awesome transition from the brow to the eye sockets though!

hey Jim, nice work, things seem to be aligning pretty well. Avoid the concave lines you have around your neck, look up how the trapezius wraps around the neck. Also, I think you're overmodeling the area under your nose, and below your eyelid (on the lit side). Also, push for greater contrast of light and dark, things look washed out right now.

Hello all,
This is my first post in this thread. A little background:
I have been focusing so much on my career as a graphic designer that I have not done any painting in years. Largely because of this thread, I have decided to get back into it and it is a struggle. Having not picked up a brush in so long and trying to start again is quite humbling.
I never was very good, but I have made a goal of really trying to get better. I am starting slowly, just to get things going again and I am finding that I really have a long way to go. Here are some examples of some old work, followed by what I have been up to recently. I appreciate all of your comments and continued contributions to this awesome thread!

An abstract landscape from 2002. Oil on canvas.
Also, a painting of my dog-acrylic on canvas from 2006.
These are the only paintings I have done since 2002 until my recent stuff.

Now some small studies I have been working on just to try and get back in the game.
Acrylic on canvas sheet.

Ramon, keep an eye on warm/cool changes in your plein air studies. The greens are often going cool/cool/cool. Usually for every color change you'll have a temp change (sometimes there are two cools or two warms in a row, but more than that will start to read as pattern, not form).
By the way, I've finally had a vacation and am working with one of my students to scan all my slides and then take digital photos of more recent work! I'm going to launch a website. I'll let you know when it comes together. The older work will be ready first.
PS The still life you posted here is really first rate!

Thanks for the comments Maxine :) I'll definitely check my temperatures in future plein air paintings. I look forward to seeing your work online :)
Here's something I did this weekend, a pen and ink study from life, I figured it's close enough to a painting to post.

Shit, this thread is super inspiring - Main loop, you are inspiring me to get my ass out of the studio and into life, I haven't tackled life painting yet. I would love to try my hand at landscapes from life. I am going on a short weekend vacation this weekend and will be in nature, I think I am going to bring my easel along.
Coro, wicked wicked work!
