Here are a couple of still lifes. The first two are done in acrylics and the next two are in oils. The first two were studies of the effect colored light has on colored objects, and the next two were my first attempts at oils. These are all done from life, no photo ref.

mermuse - my favorite is the costumed guy.. you're making good progress..
ABCart- Always love your work.. the brushwork in the head seems too similar all around.. a bit monotonous..
Azollo - those are good studies.. watch the perspective on the irons.. the 2nd one seems to be tipping over..

ABC - I love the painting of the woman in the blue dress the accents of texture make it very playful.
The costumed paintings were done at the Drawing Club (http://www.thedrawingclub.com/).

Man, everyone here paints so well!

Mermuse, I love your paintings especially. Your use of color is so bold and vivid.

Lucabrasi, your friend is a tremendous painter, but I don't care for the subject matter in all except the woman by the window. It has great mood that the others ones don't. Your a great painter as well. I especially like the first one, it's really well designed!

This is my favorite thread on this forum. So much beauty. I love coming back to your thread and look again and again. It makes me feel better. Thank you all, guys and gals. You are wonderful. I would love your work in my house.
kresoja, I like your sea oil a lot. This blue color is very deep. Paintings have so much air.
mermuse. I love every work of yours. It carries the energetic feeling of love and enjoyment of life in every form.
tayete wonderful work, I especially like the tubes with paint.
Main Loop- I'm enjoying your castles. They create such a wonderful mood.
AbcArt I admire your work. Figure sketches, oil portraits, a neighbor's tree in full bloom, the portrait of a girl in a cap, still life with pink carnations in a vase are so beautiful.
skipstah70 - like the nude in a chair a lot
nick reynolds- I love your peppers I can feel their taste just looking at your painting
Ben Mauro like your brushwork and vivid colors a lot

Very nice. Very quick work for 10 minutes. I like how you brought the blue of the wallpaper into the face and pillow, creates a nice connection of hue, stuff like that. I like the expression on the face, very realistic.

What kind of paper is that? Almost looks like a brown paper grocery bag :P. If it is, even better, always a big fan of cheap materials. Its the artist, not the paintbrush, media, etc.

Casein is a binder used in milk paints used to bind the pigments. Milk paint is fabulous stuff, I did my son's red dresser with it and expect that 200 years from now the colour will remain the deep, earth red it is today. http://www.sinopia.com/casein.html

Just a question to all of you who paint alot from models.
I've just started in an art school were we paint all day the same model in the same position for 5 weeks straight, u can shift your position but mainly its the the same position.
Now i wonder is this really the best way to learn? How do you guys paint? I see alot of 40 min paintings and 2 hr and so on. Isn't a lot of variety good for you? What do you recommend?

Magnus,

Your situation really depends on your instructor. There is plenty to do and a very experienced painter can continue to extrapolate information from the model and make many corrections. If however your instructor can not show you this world of subtle information then you sit there spinning you wheels making very little progress being bored.

For myself I started in the world of quick drawings and paintings and now only consider a couple hours enough time for sketches and studies. I am now doing paintings that can stretch up to 60 hours plus. I am grateful for the instructors that pushed me to be able to see more and that overworking only comes from lack of experience not allowing the artist to make another improvement.

Good luck and use your time wisely.

does he give you guys shorter poses before starting with that long pose? If he doesn't, I think he should. A bunch of shorter poses can act like preparation and warm-ups for the main work.

Magnus
November 13th, 2005, 02:33 PM
No the teachers doesn't give us any shorter painting poses. In fact we barely even have any croquis at all.

But the situation is exactly as Flynt describes. It's just that everyone in my class is on a very basic level where we try to learn colour temperatures and warm vs cool colours etc.

But I guess the teachers wants us to get to the point where we have done our best and got stuck, and then we "get better" instead of doing many quick paintings and never improve because you do all your faults over and over again in the shorter poses. But it is very frustrating not to have more croquis though...it's like a quick injection for the mind :).

yewah, id say you have to start basic before you move on to long studies.. i think quick paintings help you learn to see all the important parts of a subject without getting caught in detail too early.. once you have strong studies you can go on to long poses..

The painting is cropped somewhat around the borders... They should start to make larger flat scanners(and cheap ones...)

yo,

i'm kind of new here but anyway,
after the workshop in prague i was so amazed of the paintings made there that ithought that i should start doing it too.

this is my first painting ever(traditional) a week after the workshop:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b239/jp_lef/sl1.jpg

proportions off etc. i know, the big chinese alcahol thing had a red ribbon but i got bored so i didn't painted it. it took me really long about 3 to 4 hours(you supossed to to it faster right??)

that evening i continued with the chair but got a bit carried away. i had my fun...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b239/jp_lef/stoel.jpg

and a nother one. mm whine....
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b239/jp_lef/sl_2.jpg
the litle botle with the yellow thing inside, i put there later so it kinda feels off.

and yesterday i was in a monochromatic mood. why not do a sp then? i think it's my best sp so far.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b239/jp_lef/sp_winterjas.jpg

these were all acrylics on paperboard. i'm surching for anything else (cheap, i'm a poor student!) to paint on since the texture on it is kinda fucked up.

i would really like to try some oils out, but for the sake of learning should i stick to acrylics?

crits & comments very mutch apreaciated! i'm here to learn...

Coro Coro Coro...I remember when you said you couldn't paint still lifes...how you have time is beyond me...and how you have time to get so much better is even more beyond me...awesome. Your brain's too valuable to all of us...don't smoke from that bong!

mermuse - awesome man! I love the last one. Man I would just love to see you tighten them up. The last one would be a fantastic more finished portrait...do you have that option or is it just a one time thing?

joeri - Man those are your first paintings! You have some really good things goin on. I know what you mean about painting on cardboard hehhehe. I'm in the same boat. Just eat lentils for a couple weeks (my wife and I did this often hehe) and buy some canvas...stretch it yourself and it's cheaper. Stretcher bars are really cheap and everything too.

annisahmad - Nice...I really like the landscape you posted...I know the photo is bad but you can feel for the light which is the important thing in landscapes anyways.

cool stuff,
gilead - the cast shadows dont make sense for the highlights.. judging by the strength of the cast shadows, the objects should feel like they're backlit, yet they have really strong highlights from the front.. maybe in your next setup you should simplify the lighting..
joeri - nice color on the hands, but they feel flat, no real sense of volume.. they still work but its something to think about..
le_fish - haha, crazy ass x-men mutant colors.. you shoudl tell them how that bottom painting is life-size..

Main Loop, thanks you're right, I had a light to the left of the set up and an overhead light so that was probably a bad move.
I like that heavy canvas texture.

haribubba, Which edge were you referring to? You have nice modeling of form and highlights in the interior of the objects, but all your edges look too abrupt like they were cut-out and pasted onto the canvas. Real good for a first though.

oh i mean where the white is showing through at the top of the rightmost grape.

Gilead
December 22nd, 2005, 12:13 PM
Doing a sepia colored underpainting would solve that. Just make a thin wash of brown over the whole canvas and then paint your grapes and their shadows in darker shades of the same brown. So the whole canvas is covered in a unifying color and all your values are established. It helps you make better color choices later on too.

Hi everyone! I'm new to concept art and am excited to participate. It's really a great place and I'm sorry that I didn't investigate it earlier. I guess to break the ice I should put up some images of my work. I'm not actually a concept artist. I am a student of classical realism (although I'm not sure that title is appropriate either). I currently study at the Waterstreet Atelier with Jacob Collins. Previously I was at the Florence Academy (one semester) and did private studies with Douglas Flynt (the friend who encouraged me to look into concept art...). All work posted is either graphite or oil and was done from life. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from everyone! My email is Waterhous8@aol.com Thanks, Scott Waddell

Dont have a teacher right now so no one to guide me, just have to figure it out myself and hopefully with the help of you guys.. I really want to get into artschool by autumn and need to get a few atleast semigood oilpaintings together to get me in..

well here is my current painting at a really early stage. The things that I'm aware of that is bad is 1. the bottle is to short, the grapes need alot more work to make them pop out and not look like a lump of paint, really having trouble mixing the right color for the background so thats wy it's just shiet right now.. I agree, unless you were going for some distorted imagery (which may be likely as it has distorted points at the forehead, torse, legs, etc). But in any case, that right arm and hand is beautifully rendered, in my opinion.

Cheers.

Main Loop & Deselect- when I first started the drawing for this painting, I was going for a true representation of my self. After I finished the outline of the head, I noticed that my head was not that elongated and slim. I liked the distortion. So I just decided to work on certain areas of the anatomy at once. Therefore, I would be disregarding proportions/relationships. For example, my eyes, nose and mouth were painted seperately, in slightly different positions, just enough to distort the likeness. It turned out to be a nice distortion. I guess that If I pushed the idea enough, it would be cubism.

It just goes to show, the drawing is the foundation in the painting. If you want a true representation of an object or person, the proportions in the drawing stage will make or brake your likeness. Keep pushing yourself to spend more time on your drawing stage.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my work.

Here's two paintings I did Sophomore year. I have a proble with stylization that is very evidant in these still lifes. The problem, I think, is in my painting of textures, or lack of textures :(. Anyway, hopefully since I'm aware of this problem it wont occur as often as it tends to. Comments and crits welcome.

Main Loop - Amazing skin tones! Always love your stuff. Especially love the painting of the figure in the orange room and the painting of the figure laying on the pillow. Really top notch!

Adam Carnes - Nice painting! I would've double checked the drawing though before painting, cause the torso looks too small to me. The floating skull is alittle ambiguous too.

I finished this painting about a week ago. I had some trouble rendering the tea pot. It is very hard to get the form right and incorperate symbols.

http://adamcarnes.com/link2art/DSC068190-web.jpg

mentler- nice stylization. it would be nice to see the painting pushed and tweeked more.

sleeperservice- the colors are vibrant and very compelling. I appreciate the simplicity. It reminds me to be a little more spontanious. I checked out the sketchbook link, great work. Good block-in technique. Do you study with Nelson Shanks?

Main Loop- brushwork has a nice qaulity. Some of the form in your last two figures seems to be seperate. Maybe the joints need more transition to give the illusion of perspective. It could flow a little better. I guess you were just painting fast.

SprayNation- thanks for the comments. I like your stylization. It reminds me of Philip Pearlsteins work. Great contrast. I like the color too. On the bottom painting, the budda head looks squashed, wierd perspective.

jasonj05- I like everything about that painting! nice bold strokes, texture, loose yet readable. Post some more.

Tenelaus- I like your palette. a limited palette can help you focus on the form more. But, it is good to pay attention to color too. I guess it is a balance. Also, if you want to incorperate more color, only use primary colors or don't use black, brown, and other nuetral paints.

DavePalumbo- good painting for one session. nice brushwork.

Acrylic on hardboard
it took me 3.5 hours. and was a lot of fun!

It's bin a while since i painted. But the day before my 20th birthday, i had to put some paint on a canvas(board). So i did. I ended with a still life of my (life / )shoes. Partly a homage to Van Gogh.

The texture of the board was really strong that's why it is so rough. But from a distance they look just fine.(like a painting should, right?)

To me it was a snapshot of my life. With the left shoe representing the past and the right the future. They are connected, by touching each other. The future being more worn out then the past, but more organized, more closed. And the past being more free, open. The left laces are strangled in each other representing the struggle of life i sometimes have.
The overall gesture of the shoes represent a humble gesture, i should not claim to hold the truth.

To others they might as well be nothing more than some shoes...

As i look back to them i feel like a little child that can not find the words to express its thoughts. This was also the first time i actually painted something that should be more than just a representation of reality.

thanks blog, haha oh great im the crit guy now..

first off id say start by toning your canvas a neutral gray, it can be slightly brown or blue, depends on what you like.. i usually just use the gunk at the bottom of my turp jar. it makes it so you dont necessarily have to cover the entire canvas in color, and letting some of the undertone show through gives a nice feel to the painting. the color in your painting aint that bad, just remember that since the light is going to be the warmest color, every plane facing the light is going to be warmer than the ones turned away from the light. just try to paint the colors you see for now, dont worry about fancy color yet. keep working on the drawing, too

mmstani-47 and Main Loop, may I tell you how jealous I am of the confidence you display in your strokes?
I am very curious as to what colours you use for caucasian skin tone as it looks fresh enough to massage.
I did this last month, took me about 3 hours, probably a bit less since I had to prepare my paints and brushes and sketch a little to warm up.
I have 2 pictures side by side as I noticed that different light gave a different mood to the image. I kind of prefer the warmer light.
Anyways, acrylics on canvas, etc.

I'm new, so I hope this works!

Although I have been in art colleges, fine arts programs; somehow they have always managed to forget to show me HOW TO PAINT! I got a book, "How to Paint Like the Masters", I am looking at Titian and Caravagio techniques.

On my newest painting, this is what I have so far for the first day of painting. I apologize for the blurriness of the photograph.

I started with grey acrylic as ground, then continued with Oils. Outline sketch and light shadows with Burnt Umber and Gamsol, let dry. Then I begun a greyscale using 1/4 Linseed oil - 3/4 Gamsol of what is the flesh tones and drapery highlights. Today I will refine the figure and details. Tomorrow I will begin to add color using 50/50 Gamsol/Linseed oil.

I am open to any comments and/or suggestions. Thanks!

last week,
2 quickie color/value studies, so i busted out the skull once again, tried a white on white composition, talk about mind numbing! I'll most likely go back and try this again a few more times, im still not totally sold on the colors.

SergioAntonio, really like the pose

Finally getting back to my r00ts!

today,

Thanks, Stephen. I like your painting too; how much work have you put into it so far? Here is an update of mine. I glazed in the drapery first using Grumbacher Gel medium to not lose my details underneath, then I used a 1/1 mix of Gamsol/Linseed oil for the shadows. I don't know what you guys think of my system, but I am liking this new technique I am using. I'm getting really strong contrast, and it is not getting muddy at all.

I am considering a proffessional painting atelier, how would you say lafigart is? Is it expensive?

Forgive me for popping in and anwering this question, not directed at me, BUT.........Can't go wrong with LAAFIG. The teacher's here KNOW their stuff. For me, the cross-section of instruction and artists here, has given me an invaluable experience and has definately propelled me forward in understanding the process of drawing in terms of masses, shapes, value and, in addition, controlling color and temp. in oil painting.

The art students that attend LAFIG, for me as well, add a wonderful and encouraging dimension to the learning environment.

Ultimately, any class you take is an investment and a commitment. You get out of it what work, on the personal end, you put into it. IMO LAAFIG is worth it.

Got my brother to pose for me. 9x12, maybe 4 hours. Hopefully I'll get faster the more I do it. Happy with most of it, but for the one finger on the right hand.

Been working with Gouache lately. Not sure why I am doing it. Those strange French paints are so damn attractive... *laughing*

Allejo, that apricot one is pretty sweet.
Bengine, I like the one on the left, the face seems kind of off-kilter on the right.
Le-fish, nice plein-air man.
Two Plein-airs I did. I live in the mountains, so I paint 'em a lot. Need to get better though.

Some of my first life paintings, the color ones are using a limited palatte, with Burnt Umber, Yellow ochre, T. White, and Burnt Sienna. They are in the order I did them

Wow, I'm a bit of a doffer at physical painting, with just dabbles here and there in watercolour, but this thread is amazingly full of great traditional work. I see that drdarrow doesn't seem to have posted recently, but the conversations from the 2004 portion of the thread are extremely useful, and that's no matter what medium your using, even digital. Fantastic stuff.

This was my ass freezing in Japantown yesterday. Why do they have to build so much stuff there?

I saw a lot of really good paintings on this thread , also on others, I think it will be good idea if there is something like Thread Gallery which enable user to just view the paintings on each thread using fast viewing like slide show technique.
