The Photo Challenge - Ghost

Thought I'd mix things up since we've been doing a lot of "technical" challenges lately...

Topic: Ghost

Rules

1. Only one picture per contestant.

2. No previously used material. All photos must be fresh and never displayed on any gallery / thread.

3. The winner of the last poll will set the next topic; if the same person stands as the winner two times in a row, he or she must choose another user to present the next topic.

4. Enhancements of the picture ARE allowed in CHALLENGE B only.

5. No voting for your own picture.

6. The challenge starts thursday, poll opens tuesday and closes thursday. the winner starts a new post on the photo forum that is named "The Photo challenge - the chosen topic".

7. The poll shall be opened tuesday evening.

8. In the event of a tie in the polls, the person who created the challenge casts the tie breaking vote.

9. The winner has until 18:00/6:00 pm (GMT +2) thursday, after he or she has won to present the next topic, if the winner fails to do so. the topic will be presented by the 2nd place person on the poll

Finally took a picture tonight for the challenge, I don't know which one I like better but I'm thinking black and white because it looks more ghosty-ish? What do you guys think? Wish I could've prevented the truck in the way...but I still like it.

:nohope: well, you thought wrong klips. if you know about photography just a bit more than clicking the button, you should know that these types of effects are easily achieved with changing some settings on the camera. I can easily say the your photo is also posed: "Hey chinese dudes, all of you stay still while i take the photo of the nerdy chinese dude in the middle, CLICK, yes man, you can move, that's the way, CLICK ENDS."

I disagree gringoloco.....These types of shots are not hard to achieve and sometimes you can just snap the shot and it happens and turns out awesome. I have a few shots like that.

Mate, I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. What I was saying was that my shot is the only one where I haven't had complete control over the image. I *believe* that it is the only entry to this point where the subject/s did not know that they were being photographed, and were in no way aware of my intent for the photograph. I cannot be certain that this is not the case with yours, however it appears unlikely, and even more unlikely for the other shots. Now you can still say 'no, you're lying, you set it all up' but I would be forced to laugh as it is just not true.

Just to give you an idea of why they were unaware, I was sitting a fair distance away (30m or so) with my 70-300 lens on a tripod. These people were pretty engrossed in their conversations except for this guy who was standing there, thinking (I assume). It was sheer good fortune that he departed as my shot was exposing, rather than before or after, but I had in no way influenced him or his actions or those of the people around him.

Finally, I do know that these kind of shots can be done by altering the settings, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do it, eh? :P

Sharye: I love it when it works too. This was the one of two from that night that did, and there's about 150 sitting in my trash that didn't. This is also a pretty heavy crop, about 40% of the original image, if that. Ah well, such is life :D

Man, you can believe whatever you want to believe. I took my photo in the exact same situation - as in they didn't know they were being photographed. & I was fairly close (4 meters) to them, so it turned out well. I wasn't saying you lied man, I was just saying that anyone can say your picture is as "posed" as the rest are. Photographs are good for lying, very good. We should just have trust in what the photographer says is the truth.

claudeEGYPT - thanks for the tips man, it was very dark, and I did what I could with my little ol' sony cybershot. A tripod would have caught too much atention, and I just tried to have my hands as still as possible for the time of the exposure.

...this was all you needed to say. If you had said that the first time (rather than third) I would have understood. Is it really that hard? Instead of lecturing me on how to take a photo, that's all you needed to do.
