Location: Ireland
I have been interested in art for the most of my life, but recently this year I have been pursuing art in a more detailed manner. I have also began digital art in the last few months. At the moment I am doing an art school project on boxing, so other the final months of my school year you will see more anatomical studies here hopefully!.
Anyway, why we are all here! Some Art...

Here is my first major digital finished piece, I am not sure if it should be in a Sketchbook, so I will only post a link:

(Fight Club portrait- was completed for a small beginners competition on another commuinity which I recieved first place)
This page is quite empty at the moment as most my work is in school, but hopfully I can get this updated most days.
Thanks for reading, I will try to keep sketching each day.

Really like the first drawing, the one with the eyes and noses. DId you use ref. in form of pictures, or did you use a mirror?

Thank you all for the kind words!
Sarcophagus: I used a reference from a book for the studies on that sheet. Thanks very much, I will!
Spats: Thanks for your comment, I will try to keep updating as much as possible.
Hive_minD: Thank you, I will keep going :)
costas: Thank you! Don't worry, keep practising! We all have loads of time for practising yet.
asoir: Thank you very much :) Thanks for the advice.
Right, well I completed some drawings as I had a small bit of time yesturday, only some simple sketched studies.
Some simple portrait studies, I was slightly disapointed in the top one, but I enjoyed the other 2.
125710
2 hands I drew in a little space of time yesturday, just some simple studies. I do tend on doing more of these but I hadn't time at the time.

Hey there mate, and thanks for posting in my SB ;)
However, as you can see, I'm not very active atm, so I apologize in advance if I won't be able to
visit your SB very often in the future ;)
Anyway, this is a great start for a Sketchbook :)
Make sure that you post in other peoples' sketchbooks to sort of HOOK THEM on your sketchbook,
that way you'll find that you'll get lots of helpful tips and crits along the way.
Other than that, just keep rocking :)
That last digi is über, and the eyes at the top are also kickass! ^^
Hard work and dedication, the two keycomponents of any successful artist :)

Hey,
I have a 3 hour art exam on wedensday so I am currently preparing for it.
I have to draw a natural or man-made object with a detail seperate in 1 hour. We were given a choice of 20 objects. I also have to do a full figure or head and shoulders ( I will be doing full figure ) of a live model. I am picking a natural object, and I will be drawing a bell pepper.
I am doing some quick sketch's and studies of it at the moment for practise.
These two were done over about an hour from life. I know they are quite rough and incomplete ( such as the shadow at the base's ).

hei hurley the Phantom-Pic is great!! how long did it take you?
Hurley
May 16th, 2007, 04:55 PM
Thanks Kfeeras. I'm not sure on the complete time as it was done over a few days, maybe around 4-5 hours. I was working quite slow, as it was one of my first. If you like this one check out the fight club portrait link I posted up along :)
If anyone is interested, my art exam went well. I got both my still life drawing and the live model drawings finished. Unfortunatly. I don't have pictures as they were sealed in folders and sent away.
Anymore comments appreciated :) Some minor updates on the way soon..

Nice one for the comments in my sb, always helps.
I`d like to see more definate shading in some peices, really push the values and tone.
And that phantom paint is badass.

That phantom pic sue is impressive. In your scetches you form is looking good but you do need to darken them up a bit. I see you using some thatching you could try layin down a base and then push the graphite around too.
Oh and gratz on the exam :)

Wow, I'm thoroughly impressed with your ability to reproduce those digital paintings so accurately. I think one thing I would suggest for your pencil work is to remember to keep a consistent direction in your hatching. I'd also mention greater contrast like the previous comments but that could be just a scanner issue.
Keep up the great work!
Hurley
June 1st, 2007, 04:42 PM
MikeHamlett: Thanks very much! Thank you for the advice. I have always wondered if I should keep a more uniform direction to hatching. Also thanks for the advice on pushing the values and contrast more.
Donovan V: Thanks man. Also thanks for the advice. I won't have any results on the exam untill September unfortunatly so its a long wait.
Smokey186: Thanks for the advice again. Seems this is a reacuring thing, I'l get right on it :)

Ok, I havn't had much time becasue I have 8 long days of hard exams comming up, so this is my last post for a while * I think *.
Only too things to show, the first is quite an old still life of an apple, it might be a bad scan, its quite blurry I think. Also the second is a 40 minute speedpaint, which I am trying to do from now on. I havn't tryed them before but I realy need to work on colouring, as I feel I have been pulling too many colours from references up to now which I feel I should not be.

Hi, Hurley!! I just wanted to peek in here and check out your works!! I appreciate you visiting my SB and giving me your feedback and encouragement!! ^_^
Your art is awesome!! I love how you paint digitally! You take the advice well, and very quickly, too! :D I see that you managed to darken the pencil work a good deal! I'm definitely awestruck!

Hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. Thanks for the advice on my painting.
You got some nice stuff here and your digital paintings are really good! I would suggest getting a bit loose in your lines so they aren't as stiff. Keep up the great work.

Enydimon: Thanks very much :) I'l try to loosen up the lines in the future, thanks for the advice.
JazzW: Thanks very much Jazz! I'l be sure to check on your Sketchbook regualry.

Well I finaly got around to purchasing Painter X! I was going to get IX but I decided on the lather :) I am finding it very difficult to use, as I have no idea how each of the brushs operate. So far I have played around with some pallete knives and some oil brushs, but some of its functions are very handy and make painting alot faster.
Well here is my first ever attempt at Painter!
Mícheál Seán Ó Coileáin - Michael Collins Portrait. Just another Speed Paint
~ 1 1/4 hours, I was also trying to figure out some little bits n' pieces in Painter along the way.

Hey Hurley, thanks for visiting my sketchbook! You are pretty damn talented for a 15 year old.. The studies are looking realistic, it's good to see you push the values a bit more in your latest drawing. The first painter attempt looks cool already, wish my first stuff looked so good. Will you add more detail later on? :)

Hello all, its been along time :\
I have had no time to paint or draw up to now unfortunatly. I have to say I have also been lazy towards my art, and completly uninspired to paint or draw even. But I'm trying to pick up the pencil once more, and I went away and ordered some Hogarth books, so hopfully I'l get them soon!
Here's my first in a month, just a quick 1 hour speed paint

Hopfully I'l be able to get down to some work now that its summer!
Thanks,

Hey, Hurley! I've been lazy, too. No energy. -_- But it's great that you're doing some work!! :D For the speedpainting, that's GREAT! I really like how you did the mouth and teeth! It's interesting about the upper eyelids. They're missing, but it's almost like you go from realistic to painterly-realistic (reminds me of 50's paintings of da ladies... ;) ) It's really neat! (I swear I can't crit a speedpainting! I don't even think I should! XD )

I have returned :yayca:
After about 3 months of complete artistic inactivity, my mind is fueled and ready to take another stab at art.
The first is a painting I have been working on, which I will probably stop!
The second is just a quick sculpture copy, its realy poor in my opinion and I realy need to push my values. Its also a poor scan.
I am hoping to become more active, and if you are wondering I got my A1 in the art exam I explained above! Thanks guys!

Hey, Hurley!! :D Great to see you again! I was wondering how things were going! As far as your exam, congratulations!!! :D I never heard of A1 for a mark, so I had to figure out if it was a great thing. Ha ha!
I'm glad your back into the groove again!! You shade wonderfully--the blends are convincing and the colours are full of life!
For the painting, the progress is really nice! Parts of him are popping off the page! I only have a problem about his left shoulder. It looks more stuck to his neck than it should be. Could be the flat colour giving off that impression, though.
Anyway, I hope to see you at my lonely SB! Ha ha! I haven't been able to do much cuz of school. :P LOTS of school.

Thanks Jazz :) Thanks again for the critism, I see what you mean. I'l pop over to your SB soon again ;)
I went out and ordered Bridgemans "Complete Guide to Drawing from Life" and "constructive Anatomy"... at last :teeth:
Fantastic books, heres about 10 pages from the last 3 or 4 days.
Thanks for reading again.

Wow nice stuff man. The pencils are on the right track and still have room for improvement with regards to getting just the right amount of contrast. Ideally you want to have some area left white and some areas as dark as you can get them. Then just get the balance with thevalues inbetween right.
What really impresses me is the digital paintings. I would just post the fightclub one agan, not in a link, because I don't tink many people have seen it.
Oh yeah, and you asked me if I'd got the life drawing classes yet, well, you basically asked that on the same day that somene suggested I went to them lol, since it ws the holidays I was updating like 3 times a day. Its only once a day on weekdays but that will no doubt slow down in a year when I start getting all my exams. cya around man.

PredatrHuntr: Grasias ;)
spazazo: Thanks man, for the compliments and advice :) I'm tackling the contrast/values problem at the moment here and there,
I'l post the fight club piece as you requested, but I'm not that proud of it to be honest, I picked alot of colours. But I learned alot, thats all that realy matters I guess :)
Ha, same day woops, your updating like no tomorrow man ;)

Your bridgeman studies are coming along nicely. Keep at them, they will pay off.
Your digipaintings, are, as you have been told, the shiz. They are great. Keep at them. I personally liked the nutter guy near the bottom of the last page. The tongue looked great.
I'm 16 too, but you>me :P
Keep at it. You are making me want to try a lot harder!
