Ok, so to get better I need to practice right? ugh. so I'll practice.

First off, here are 2 threads that probably should have started here.

I'm working on loosening up my brush strokes. I notice tiny improvements. The face at the bottom isn't much to look at, but its a drastic improvement for me.

more attempts at values. trying for quick strokes to define form. Kids stuff, I know but you gotta start somewhere.

hey man, very well begin, i would advise one thing: begin with the pencil and paper instead of digital. its better medium to learn.

most of these are a few years old now.

Lots of quick studies. Several self portraits that look rather like Neanderthals. I haven't had an art class since 7th grade (I was 12 or 13) so I've had to learn a lot.

The biggest problem I have, aside from anatomy, is trying to draw the light, not just what I know is there.

haven't touched photoshop since then. God its been a long time. here's a quick attempt, maybe 15 min.

Man, I forget how wonky a tablet is till you get used to it.

I don't know if you can even see what I was going for, but it was a steampunk robot thing. Based loosely off of a picture of a roving house I saw from burning man.

playing with shapes and light. well, really playing with how to blend in photoshop I guess. As you can see from the earlier posts, this was much more successful.

taking all of your wonderful advise....

I pulled out the pencil and paper, found some loomis and started at the beginning.

I'm doing tons of these stick figures. Its pretty humbling to realize that you draw stick figures poorly! Yeah, my proportions are generally off. That's what practice is for right?

still just playing with how to render. It looks like clay to me. I tried more contrast, but ended up feeling stupid.

THERE HASN'T BEEN A DSG FOR TWO DAYS!

Since there wasn't a new subject, I hunted down 3ch... I love that thing.

I really really want to do color, but I have a very hard time with it. Soooo I played with color a little bit.

after about 10 minutes I got scared and ran back to black and white.

still not much more than a doodle. I just couldn't get it to start to come out at me. If that doesn't happen pretty quick, I start over.... so I'm starting over.

still working on anatomy and such. this was done in about 45 min from an old b&w picture. I know it isn't great, but I feel like it helped. The anatomy may be way off, and it may not be pretty, but I feel like I'm getting better at defining form.

c4l3b
May 13th, 2008, 10:52 AM
quick rework. Sleeping, then looking at it again helped the anatomy a lot.

another attempt at some color. ended up pretty monochrome. Maybe an hour of fiddling here. I know it isn't pretty, but it seems like a slight improvement to me.

started a thread to get some direction from the masses.
