This was actually my first attempt at photoshop illustration, with Cthulhu-ish guy as a second attempt.
I learned a lot from the other thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=95154)and and the help of Dilo and Brendan N. So I went back to do a repaint to work on some textures.
Is it proper forum etiquette to post a new thread for each piece?

I think that helps alot. It doesn't look as real as I wanted, but it definately helps.

wow! That is alot of progression! My biggest crit is that while your textures are great, the modelling is suffering. The tentacles don't look like they are moving forward and backward in space.
Your sense of colour is good though, I would try and use some temperature variation to try and move the tentacles back and forthin space. Notice the viewers right eye, that blue on the lower ridge of really gives it a sense of curving
I *really* like how you handled the background texture. How did you do that ??

If you think this is a decent progression, you should see the crap I was producing 2 weeks ago! This may not be great, but for me it was a revelation!
I really enjoy teaching people things, so I jump at the opportunity. It has to be stated though that I'm pretty new to this stuff, so I'm sure there are probably better ways.
note: step 3 could be done as a new layer, with the brush set to normal. Set the layer to overlay, then you could adjust the values with the levels and opacity for the layer. I just painted it on though.

added some color. I might redo the forward facing surface of the tentacles, by the face. they seem to be losing the glossy sheen.

I <3 Cthulu!
We had him in a D&D game, but my brother killed him. It's kinda sad...
Good job on the painting, but give the tentacles a bit more depth, and maybe even add another few that stick out frm under the rest of tht slimy beard.

looks very good!
One suggestion is that your fabric is the same texturing as the skin, consider suggesting woven thread?

The outfit is really just blocked out. I'm still learning and haven't had the nerve to try to make fabric.
I'm sure I'll come back to it.
thanks for the kind words guys.
