EOW#52 Castle Chariot
Morgan LeFay's Castle—Made entirely of Food

“its two soft door-posts of custard,

Its dais of curds and butter,

Beds of glorious lard,

Many shields of thin pressed cheese.”

...It rose from its lake of milk in a mystic light of its own--in a greasy, buttery glow. It was the fairy aspect of Castle Chariot...

From T.H. White's The Once and Future King

I will except any medium.
Now... concept!

Due April 26

chaos, I think you are a huge psychedelic literature consumer! Hehehe, this is not the first time you present a topic with whacky content. A castle made of food... hmmm, maybe a castle for mice?

guilty as charged..

But T.H. WHite's "Once and Future King" is hardly Psychadelic Literature.

I imagine there will be some grotesque and glories entries this round.
I also imagine that none of them will be mine.
Have fun, you kids.

Aaaww c'mon :P

The once and future king is one of my favourite books (I actually read my fathers paperback copy literally in half :) ).On the other hand, this very fragment used to be one of my least favourite...

Then I checked google and in the 2nd link I found the whole scene was broken down to its 'basics'; I really wonder whether White intentionally wrote it to mean all the things in the explanation, I'm afraid he even might have :P)
Anyway, it made me appreciate the scene a bit more so I might give it a try.

Let's just get sketching :)

Hey guys. I thought Id start this one by sharing an inspirational collage I sourced from Masters like N.C. Wyeth and Craig Mullins, while also throwing in some very new artists like Jason Steele.

edit: now that I've done a collage, Ive started the thumbnail stage:

one day i made the very scary decision to clean under my bed, but i could never had imagened that just under a mere four year, time span a bowl of mashed potato would have grown into a comunity, apparently there are some tiny micro organisms sculpting the mash to protect a fork!! i have no idea why, but its nice to look at, the whole thing is situated in what i can only hope is gravy but i cant be to sure^^

ok it wasent originally cartoon styled but after 2hours trying to render and difine a mashed potato castle in photoshop somthing snapped and it ended up like this, but befor you totally discredit me as an artist have a gander at my sketch book im actually quite proad of some of the work in there ^^ :)

nuru that's pretty cool. would be neat how you approach that with colors. maybe a graphic style would work well but who knows

Thanks for comments yanimator and theo - am currently working on the colours with watercolour (am a complete PS noob)- am hoping the finished piece will look alot softer and more sensitive than the sketch...who knows though - i'm pretty hit and miss with colour at the best of times :)

thtas the trouble with grabbing descriptions from actuall literature
they are both very specific and insufficiently descriptive.

chaos, i'll have something for this round but mine will have a slight backstory to it. just couldn't get myself to paint a castle made from food stacked on top of each other.

nuru, that looks awesome. watercolor medium came out nicely and goes together with the style of lineart you did.

shaoshao, you just gave me the biggest dessert craving with that. i had to go out for a cake after seeing that.

A decomposing castle made entirely from food maintained by the village people all working together in an effort to constantly supply fresh food. The village surrounding this massive structure can be thought of as a giant kitchen, with some of it's buildings made entirely of cast iron acting as an oversized oven to bake goods. Ironically, the immense heat generated by these buildings causes the food to prematurely go bad, making it a constant race to replace.

*edit: made some last minute changes to the pic

yanimator love the concept of the castle being surrounded by a giant kitchen - and the atmosphere in your image :) n thx for comment

shaoshao definately gives you pink, sugary cake cravings :)

Drazen10 i dont see why you hate this image so much - but i suppose, when youre that sick of working on something the best option is to leave it..

I started out on this one a bit ambitious, but real life caught up in a kinda nasty way so halfway inking I sort of lost the peace of mind to go on properly. Some errors have crept in but I think I'm able to pull it right with coloring (if I find the time to do that :( ). Not too sure about how the composition worked out though.

Edit: Chaos, for now this is my final, I realized too late I have no time to color it. If you decide it isn't finished enough to make it to the poll I'll have peace with it :) .

My idea was to draw the Wart and Kay setting off on their rescue mission, and rather than work out the castle in detail I wanted to create an atmosphere that matched the book as I remember it. The style is losely based on some Art Nouveou pieces (especially the work of Rebecca Guay), I thought this style would fit with the idea I had for this EOW. I plan to color it using markers, since I'm not really at home with watercolor yet.

Outside of the lard box, that is.

(Just trying to open up a few minds). Don't be afraid when you are making art.

Workers go to this moving Castle like factory to get work. This massive factory spews out a foul stench of lard and stinks of rotten cheese.

Sorry for the late entry. I wanted to do more but occupied with other things. Peaceout and nice entries everyone! XD
