1rst. I don't know if I’m skilled enough, but I will try my best to finish before then.
2nd I have a full time job and study part time. It's an 80% chance that I will not make it so for now (after a few minutes of consideration reality kicks in) I must pass maybe next time.
3rd I will keep it in mind and if I don't finish in time I will post a end result sometime in the future when I have the time to do so... Thinking about that I must be going and finish what I started.
Sorry for your trouble

Can I judge yet? Chaosrocks, I’ll send you my top three picks. And here are my critiques. . .
Ferdinand Venter – “Demure Witch” – I like the reversal of the usual witch colors to white. It looks like perhaps you have taken this opportunity to learn new features of the tools you are using? The strongest part of the image is definitely the witch. She has good body language, and her skin color stands out nicely in the composition. The other elements are compositionally not as solid as they could be – they are interesting shapes on their own but they aren’t working together as a whole.
MoonVisionStudio – “Punk Witch” – Perfect character! I think I went to college with her, in fact. The cat doesn’t sit as well with me – the anatomy is just a bit too caricatured. I think the lighting would be better if it were coming solely from the candles and screen. Nice use of props and costume details; though the skull has anatomy issues. I love the apple pentagram design, but it would be clearer if the star’s arms were properly crossed. But finding that symbol again on the floor after looking at it on her shoulder is a fun touch.
Deadred – “Softly-Lit Witch” – The coke can is just plain funny. I love how you have handled her features and the light glowing on them, and her soft personality; I don’t like the hard line between light and dark elements behind her. There seems to be a good opportunity missed to use that background space for a strong composition of simple shapes. I love the floaty holographic elements. The less-finished elements could use a little more refinement.
Squidmonk3j – “Leaping Witch” – That’s a powerful image. It’s unexpectedly simple for the subject, and it works well. The computer needs a tad more detail so that it doesn’t just read as a rectangle. Also, her feet and calves could be more shapely. I love what you’ve done with the lighting.
Grendel Grack – “Floaty-Hair Witch” – Eye candy! I’m having a tough time thinking of anything that could be improved. Maybe that floaty mouse would be better off over the cloud somewhere, so that it would be more visible. I also find myself wanting there to be some bit of space between the cat and the hair. Ooh – since we are looking down on her, we should also be looking down on the candles. Those colors are yummy, and I want to take those curly shapes home with me and cuddle up with them.
Sve – “Darling Witch” – Cute! Such a light and sunny image – it’s a nice twist on what can so easily be made into dark subject matter. I’m curious as to what all the “don’t” post-it notes are about. The girl’s arms and legs are out of proportion to her head. I love the cat in the string.
Chuck, mate – “Unfinished Witch” – Those are some nice hips! Are you going to finish her?
JLAfaro – “Crotch Witch” – This is a fun cyberpunk approach. The lighting scheme is pretty. Her face and hand are particularly well developed , and by contrast, the rest of her is lacking a bit in shadows and textures (which is a nice reversal of a common problem in figure painting). I’m surprised to hear myself saying this, but if her crotch is going to be so central to the image, it needs to have as much personality as her face!
Nice work everyone!

Thank you, Seedling for useful crits and I agree with them... head is too big... I might try to cut it a bit where her hairr are on the top...Don't on the computers are not just "don't post", it is don't do anything at all, in general... and in this case... find some other thing to love besides a virtual reality...
That's portrait of my daughter, similarity is so-so.. but personality is close... she is sunny and sly. Thanks again, very nice of you...
deadred Thank you for liking and I will comment too a bit later, when all pieces are in and finished.
MoonVisionStudio Thank you so much as well, it is kind.. Sorry with delaying with my own comments, but I will do them.

Thanks Seedling for the critique. My mind gone blank after I finished it the first time I didn't know what to add into the picture because the left side was kind of open the better option would of been to crop it but I didn't think of it at the time. All I know is that I wanted to add a spell book into the whole composition, but my mind got stuck where I could have put it. I wanted to make a fire effect around it but it didn't work at all so I deleted it.:(
The other elements are compositionally not as solid as they could be – they are interesting shapes on their own but they aren’t working together as a whole.
Do you have an idea on how to improve it, like for instance delete a few things add something I didn't think of etc?

Do you have an idea on how to improve it, like for instance delete a few things add something I didn't think of etc?
Spend some time doing some quick non-representational studies. Basically just shove some shapes and colors around and try to come up with pleasing compositions. Then apply what you learnd to your representational work.

May 20th, 2007, 08:15 PM
moonvisionstudio - some issues re the face, as mentioned. and allthough i'm no fan of that neon green, i really like the piece! the pose and details kinda reminds me of Jamie Hewlett's TankGirl, but you obviously have ur own style going for you! and, tnx for feedback!
dead - what can i say...ur women are gorgeous! also, great colour scheme! only crit would be the relation between witch and laptop. as it stands, the machine seems to be floating magically over the pentagram, but the reclining hand indicates that she might be supporting it in some way...i don't like the ambiguity of this! nonetheless, very strong piece! extra pts for posting progression and ref:) ...and no, i'll not likely be working more on this one - it's just gotta try to to stand on it's anatomically incorrect feet and hope for the best!
squidmonk3j - are you kidding me? are those legs? and, what's up with her abdomen?! back to school, fool!
sve - i love this piece! it vibrates with warmth and love!
grendel grack - great smoke and hair! i think there are some value issues here tho...the bottom part seems less thought out than the top. and the cat and hair might benefit from some highlights, not so much as to remove focus from the face, but you know...*some*. not too crazy about the green in this piece either. i can't even make out what those beams are supposed to be. i'd really like to see some extra post-td effort put into this piece, it's very promising!:)
ferdinand venter - hm, i kind of like this in spite of myself...i think it's because of the strict composition, which has almost a tarot-like feel to it. but, the individual elements aren't too strong...almost all shape and no real mass, if you get my point. like the pose of the witch, tho!
jlafaro - elwell once crit'ed an early piece of mine..."Well, I gotta tell ya'...
There's a fundamental conceptual problem here, which is that it's obviously supposed to be sexy, and it's just not. The wonky eyes, the horse nose, the mashed potato breasts, the claw hands, the awkward pose, the bowed legs... everything conspires to work against the feeling you are trying to create. None of those things would be such glaring flaws if we didn't have the beaver shot, but once you have that, everything else had better back it up."
now, urs is a much better piece than the image elwell ripped apart (with good reason), but there's a good lesson in there!:)
seedling - tnx for taking the time to crit! appreciated:)
and chuck, sry you couldn't make it...we'd be honoured by your participation, but time is money, eh?:)

Hello... Some impressions:
JLAlfaro I liked your first version so much more... You moved to more distanced, colder version later and maybe it has more "computer","modern" and "witch" in it, but it feels less involving to me...
I liked more realistic proportions: normal, realistic legs in the first version and thicker waist... she looked more down to earth and it had better story for me, sort of transition from earthy woman to computer goddess. I liked green color... although, it had half natural half artificial feeling too, but it was moody and had depth together with those turning rectangles in perspective...I liked her face as well, still a face you can meet on street but with unusual lighting from beneath... So everything led me to thought of magical tranformation of human being into mystical creature.
In the last version she is as far from regular people as possible, cold, distanced, not human... with everything: proportions of her body, color of her skin, strange hanging in the air without support, weird expression of the face...
as crits I wish you did the ankles of her feet in the first version thinner and finer... it would make her look more graceful , would give her body more elegant shape ... and because you did try to hint on her attractiveness, I think it would be suitable to enhance it even more.
Ferdinand Venter I like the lovely pose of the woman... like she approached the place of meeting silently, without any sounds and stood on the side of the picture... not wanted to attract attention to her... smooth, soft and feminine. I like her gentle curves, wavy and undistributed and calm colors... And her glance persistent and entering and distanced in the same time... So all this together with even style of the painting give me certain personality, taste of it: something that coexists with us in the same moment in the same room, but doesn't mix...an entity, independent... soft but willful... observing and untouchable, unapproachable... beautiful. Something of different nature from us.
Crits... I don't think your adding some kabbalistic symbols improved the image... the added scripts look too sketchy and I think it scatters my attention overall, trying to understand the message and wondering if you just didn't have time to make them better, in perspective, in the same style with everything else.
I really like woman face, tilt of her had and contradictions of her alerted watchful glance and submissive pose... half empty room is fine, doesn't' disturb me, ... but i think objects look not very good connected overall in your composition... too many space between them and not the best placement relating them to each other.
Woman in feminine pose near the jug it is almost classic as woman combing her long hair... it is beautiful and very appealing to me, I like the idea.
MoonVisionStudio Nice composition and pose.... I like the mix of energetic colors and well fit modern girl with relaxed, powerless, I would even say frustrated with somehting pose.. I like the arm and hand hanging in the air without action... made me look and wonder if everything went well for this character. I saw few paintings of the gypsies with tarot cards trying to predict the future...and some of them had the same expression on their faces: frustration, and in the body language. Like seeing something bad happening in the cards...
Otherwise she looks quite energetic and very much involved with life: dressed to kill, gorgeous, with boots that probably jump from floor themselves, like springs... helping her to move forward effortlessly...
Crits: a bit too many focus points... you are overusing saturated colors I think, it wouldn't be a bad thing to tune down a bit on her skin, outfit and especially the giant letters, which should not have this priority in picture I think...
Lovely image overall and I live the magic lighting and her green eyes..
deadred The face is gold, the lighting, the attractive features , slightly fuzzy hair, quietened appealing colors... all this is lovely... but I wish you put better thoughts in composition and in her pose,,, she looks tense because of the pose ,,, it would be better to place her siting criss cross apple sauce, enjoying her favorite thing, alone finally... everything else in the picture from colors to solitude makes me think she is in her favorite place and favorite occupation and it is her good moment... but awkward legs kill it a bit and make the image needlessly alerting... And you would bind the laptop placing it on her knees too...becasue right now it look awkward too, IMO...
squidmonk3j It is good idea, it think, wild energetic uncontrollable woman jumping suddenly from a little black box... reminds me old Arabian genies, stuffed by someone into nightmarishly tiny vessel.. Your picture is bit too neutral though and if my guess is close I wish you gave her more expressive pose, freeing herself and probably laughing victoriously like a thunder: rough and striking, like nature.
feet don't bother me... subtle message does.
I looked at you images in your sketch book and you are very, very skillful, extremely expressive with everything when you want it: expression of faces, body language, composition... I think you didn't get involved with this one unfortunately... you need to give some to make me want to know about your heroine... wish you make her crazy, foaming idiot jumping out of her confinement and being madly happy about it. Sort of too longly suppressed volcano, destructive nature force...
Thanks for liking my image...
Grendel Grack I like your image a lot for this interest provoking tilt of her head and unusual type of her face and hippie like outfit... flower child ... and stretching cat.
Lovely colors, juicy and deep and very beautiful... they create a certain mood. a character on their own... like the time in the late evening when sun is set but it is not a complete darkness and in the air you can see those transitions of beautiful colors. I think you have the same mood there... mystic and rich.
I wish you made the cat darker and her hair maybe a little lighter...cat would repeat already presenting dark color of the computer and it would tasteful be I think...
Overall it is a great image.

Thanks for all the comment btw did I mention my medium is vector I'm currently redoing some of the elements so if all goes well ill be done this weekend because I’m to busy in the week and well... I’m short on ideas; I'm trying not to copy someone else's idea
Now my crits
JLAlfaro: I really like your new concept more than the fist. Both of your pictures center point is exactly in the center. It doesn't bother me so much but still you can keep in mind for future reference the hair is done better as everything looks better, and as Seedling mentioned the crotch is kind of taking over your image
deadred: I love how you painted the girl she looks real modern, but I don't get the witch feeling it can be just me. All the rest has been said already.
MoonVisionStudio Very interesting subject you've added so much detail on the witch and almost neglected your cat and skull(computer stand). I think adding more detail to that could improve your image
Grendel Grack Oh Gypsies all I have is that the keyboard looks like it’s going too fall out of her hands. I love it.
sve The Girls dress looks flat. Is she some nature modern witch? The poor cat being tied up in that string. That would teach it not to do knitting on it's own it needs to know-how-to first before attempting such a hard feat ;).
squidmonk3j Your picture is to darn small. It may give a tarot card feeling, but since I’ve never been involved with my dark side (I'm to scared of it getting out) I don't know what to think. I'm currently looking though your SB damn my internet is so darn slow I think I would second sve on this one
Chuck, mate. I'm sure you can make it and give us a run for our money ;). No seriously come and show us what you got. You've already gotten me interested so what are you waiting for finish damn you.
