I really like the fashion shots, but as someone previously mentioned the cropping on the first picture could be better - include all her hair. And also the fourth shot - the knee seems to be just a little too close to the edge.

My fav is #18. I love the contrast and the striking look. :)
I like 19 as well, but I feel it could have been a bit more creative in the composition.
20 and 21 make a nice set, but I feel the white shapes flanking the sides in 21 overpower and distract from the subject.

Holysmokes! Fluid Grace is a revelation! Fantastic lighting and pose. Crazy tonal range. Argh!
I am, however, really unhappy about her hair being cropped off. I am certain that this was a deliberate choice, so yea... you had your reasons. It's just that I disagree...:D Actually I want to see all of that pose in that light, from foot til that last bit of unsubstantial Auralight over her head!

hehe hey guys thanks! i'm glad you liked that. it's from one of my most recent shoots.
Mr. Mu: I cropped it a little to help balance the composition. I'd loved to have taken some full bodies, but time was short. I only had 15frames to take this lol. I'll try next time, to capture some full bodies like this ones. It's been a while since I took movement shots. x)

I dont supposed you can do a very brief description of how you're setting up the lights in your studio shots in your future posts?..would help a lot :)
Some may be very obvious but just wanted to get an idea of how you approach these
zemotion
October 4th, 2007, 09:27 AM
Rascar Capac: Thanks! Well all of them are really simple actually, these aren't advertising and I'm a person who'd love to settle for the easiest possible means when possible for my team, though the result is I spend more time on DI haha.
Most of the lit shots are one light source, very few have two (one main one fill), and that's about it. Ask me which one you'd like to know and I'll tell you, they're all really simple. :)

Hey guys! Thanks so much for all the comments. I haven't been around so much these few days... busy stopping school. :P
pazur: All of these are personal work, but from here onward I'll mention when I do something for clients~ I use digital, a Canon 5D, but some shots are taken with a Hasselblad H3D. ^^ I also have a rolliecord which I don't use so often because it's really difficult to find a good lab that can develop the films the way I want them to, I dont know how to do it myself so I used to have a friend do it for me..
iatriki: thank you! I'm glad you find it so!

25 26 27 28 are defontly my fav. can i ask how and were you got your model from?
25 is a great photo. i like the sharpness of the image and also the actual pose.
great work
the last two really don't do it for me how ever 30 is good, 32 however is just a tad to light in the wrong place. I would have gone for the intense light at the top left hand side.
I do think your work is great though so keep them cooming

November 10th, 2007, 04:52 PM
No problem, they really are great photos :) 8 and 14 are my favourites. I recognise 8 from some where, has it been posted elsewhere other than here and DevArt?
I really want to love 22, but I just can't help but feel her 'elbow' is out of place. I mean i'm guessing it's not her elbow right? Because that would be an impossible pose. I think it's just the way the shadows settle there.

I really love the moods and stories behind #25 (especially the lighting) & #27. In #27, the white area behind her head distracts me a bit.
I like #30, but I agree with Sam a bit about the light; the tones are a bit too flat.

November 12th, 2007, 08:07 AM
Thanks guys!
John.D: I'm not sure about it... I've only purchased once by myself. So far I havent heard any complaints so I guess it's fine.
I have heard issues of artists not being paid, since you don't know who purchase, sometimes when people did tell an artist they bought a print and the artist never received that particular payment, DA said because there was an error with the site and thus they couldn't find the record and pay... or something like that. hahaha. I don't know anything about it since very rarely people tell me they purchased a print. ~_~
Oblio: Sorry? I'm a bit lost... Not sure what you're talking about... ^^;
purplerose: I agree too, haha. I like #30 enough to post it, I'll likely reshoot it with a model instead for better control. :)

Nice stuff! Really Crisp, the right amount of shadows.. and colors seem to be top notch. have some questions for you though:
1.Do you have a team getting clothes/makeup ready for you? (Also where do they get such eloquent dresses?)
2.Do you pay the models or do they stand for free?
3.What kind of lights do you use? (Tungesten, Normal Bulbs, etc..)

HuBBaTheMan: #33 Dark Angel was taken together with Prelude as a test shoot/recce for the Forgotten Fairytales series. I took it with 5D and 28-135mm lens (I usually only bring 50mm f1.4 and 28-135 for convenience when I shoot outdoor).
Natural light, with a very little bit of fill with a silver board for the face. Concept wise... nothing too deep to this one, just wanted to explore around with the location/framing possibilities since this is more of a test for the later shoot. I could write a little story for the image but no, there wasn't one that was planned beforehand.
John.D: Thank you! By the way I'm having my prints sale for this 2 weeks until the 5th. So if you were looking to get prints around this period of time do it now. ^^
claudeEGYPT: Hey thanks. :) To answer your questions:
1. Yes and no. I usually like working alone, but depending on the scale of a shoot, sometimes I will have others helping me out. I want to control styling most of the time because it's my set and it plays a large role. I have yet to find a good stylist so it's all my job now. I do 50% of the makeup for my shoots, but if I foresee it to be a long session I'll usually get a makeup/hair person to help me out so I don't tire myself out too much and can concentrate on photography alone. Back to styling, most of the dresses are from my collection (bought or made by myself). The one in #33 was made by my ex-classmate. I got 2 girls together with me to work on it, I did the general direction and supervised for the production of 3 dresses.
2. No I do not pay them. :)
3. I use mainly a 1kw tungsten light. I do rather emotive work (or so I'd like to think). I feel that flashes tire out a model more and is very distracting... I do use flashes sometimes though (eg: #17, #18, #22). Mostly Profoto. The textures and quality of light are really quite different, I prefer the tungsten more but it is too restrictive as there aren't really any light modifiers to play around with.
Hope that answers~ Feel free to ask me anything. :)
*edit* oops Oblio I just saw your post. Took me very long to write mine lol. Thank you so much!!

Hello, Zemotion! Nice to find u again. Something I don't really get is the stark core shadow on the shoulder. The light in general looks very even and soft and then there's this patch of darkness... did you dodge that down or something?

Hey guys, it's me again. :D
Thanks for all the comments.
Mr. Mu: The shadows over the shoulder didn't really bother me that much. I guess it's from the fill and main light that pushed it, but because the model's a little plump I'd thought it nicer to sculpt the body a little more. I'll look at it a little more and see if I should lighten it. Last one was commissioned by my exclassmates for their assessment presentation. I hope the lecturers would think like you do!
purplerose: hehe my bad. didn't notice.
Here's something done before the previous 3-4 shots, somewhere in Oct.
For a local jewellery designer. I had posted the test shoot earlier on in page2 I think. I wasn't supposed to release these until the site launches but it's almost done so I reckon it's fine to put up now since she gave the go ahead. One of my favorite sets till today.

you really are getting some beautiful skin tones. I'm curious about the processing. Does it involve taking down the saturation and bumping up the clarity? I haven't really explored RAW very much, and this is really gorgeous processing.

all of the above are beautiful, but #37 is taking jewellery photography onto a whole new level.
I am even wondering if some clients of such a photo might not object to it because you are awed by the image as such and tend to ignore the fact there's jewellery in there, LOL

Thanks for the comments everyone! ^^
eazym: Thanks, actually I don't always have a set workflow... I think some images look good sharp, some better soft. It's just personal taste and feeling about how I process each of them...
Mr. Mu: I've shown some people the images, I think it strikes a good balance between showcasing my work and the jewellery without taking attention off the model. Clients are generally happy so far. XD
And some boy shots:

wow all of these are great but I like 1,8,13,15 and 35... realllly like 15. It has that kind of clarity I like. People have different taste on lighting and such but I think the lighting is really nice in most of them as well as great editing.

#45. Caramel.
Caramel still needs a little revision, wasn't one of my favorites but the girls really liked it, so I've put them in. =3
And here, something like a dream of a forgotten fairytale, almost a little like Christmas.

What nationality are your models?
I really like kagetsuki (deviant id). She has a really great face and emotion for serious photos. I'd like to see a few of her smiling though.

Beautiful side-by-side masculine lighting on 42/43, and I really like the asian girl shots.. Thought I´ve got to say that 42 is the best imo.
37 has a bit of wierd lighting to it, but 38 has some really good qualities to it, making it a good shot overall.
Keep up the good work!
