Well I have been wanting to start my own thread for this, got some materials for my birthday and am excited to be sketching. Much props to WildSpruceMoose (my brother) for use of his scanner.

Here is the beginning, can't scan every single thing I do but I'd like to share with you and hope to progress. Any comments and critiques welcome, I have a lot of room for improvement!

cool man you finally got your own thread.
The bridgman studies look pretty good, but I would concentrate on getting cleaner lines...something I am also working on right now. Try to draw slower, that may help. Bridgman's style makes it look like he drew really fast all the time, but I have a feeling they took longer than it looks. Anyway, keep posting stuff, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

The skeleton diagrams look particularly good to me, BTW.

yeah... thanks Jeff I guess I am getting sloppy with my linework. must keep practicing and perfecting. Guess I do gestural sketching a lot, then don't erase and leave it all looking blotchy. Thanks for the feedback I'll definitely work on it!

hey endregan,

I agree with Jeff, that your linework needs some improvements (so does mine). I think it's easier to see where the mistakes happen when you draw in clear lines, because when you do very sketchy paintings it looks like "not too bad" and "nearly correct" even though there might be fundamental mistakes.
Except for that, your sketches look pretty good! i think your shading is allready better than mine... ;)

The skeleton views (diagrams?) look pretty good to me also, i'm thinking about buying that bridgeman book...

Keep it up!

thanks antihero. It will be like learning to draw all over again, because that is how i draw... Oh but have no fear Ill keep it up! Shading is a definite weak area of mine, but ill get to that soon enough! seeya around. maybe post some more sketches or dump some later maybe monday

Did some more, sketching a lot more now and keeping in mind the tightness of the lines, however I do believe a sketch is a sketch still and must not always be pure lines...but thats beside the point I am keeping it and mind and love all of your feedback. I am trying more from my head after I do studies and I find I can draw better from it. It may take a while but Im prepared to draw and draw and draw... :).

Heres the next batch, about 10 images to give you an insight of what I have been up to. Any comments appreciated.

Maybe you only posted the wrong pics... ;) The last one show some pretty good pictures, with very clear&clean strokes...

The anatomy Studies look good! maybe you could do some more studies about single parts of the body, not all at once, but maybe that's just me... ;) Serious, the recent stuff looks good. Excuse my ramble in here. :)

Go on!

thanks anti :). lately i have been doing torso studies so this is why you see a lot of body. I am slowly working through anatomy, havent gotten to arms hands feet or legs really, but am still attempting every now and then. Im moving on to the lowerbody and different parts of the body as I go on and its great to put it all together.

It will take a lot more practice but I am enjoying this. Thanks for all the feedback. I'll be hoping to post some more scans today perhaps, and maybe some of my old digital paintings I haven't posted at CA for you to have a look :).

Thanks again anti for taking the time to comment !

Taking one step at a time,
Jack.

Im back in action and got a few scans. Some old paintings done too. Some of these sketches I found turned out better if I spent longer. Was fun, learning more as I go.

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan1.jpg
Bridgman torso studies..

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan2.jpg
free sketching, trying out torso, some quick others more controlled..

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan3.jpg
more bridgman torso studies, some hatching on the side/shading practice

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan4.jpg
spent a while on these. found out the more i spent with the forms and values the better they were...all from head! Of course not perfect but is okay!

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan5.jpg
some crazy idea I had surrounded in random head sketches

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/scan6.jpg
practising angles of the head sort of. was fun to do a lot on one page, not all of them are perfect, perhaps a tad flat but they were quick and fun. bottom of the page is my fav.

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/serradone-small.jpg
not sure if ill get back to this serra angel painting, going back to sketching for values then i might try painting every now and then again..

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/july29/trumpet-skycombined.jpg
Did these in Photoshop, worked out okay as it was my first digital paintings that I spent a while on. Did these for art class and opened up a new world of possibilities, the teacher was impressed and liked them. I know they aren't perfect but I like them :).

Thanks for stopping by and again any comments appreciated!

good stuff man. I also find that it helps to switch back and forth between studies/copies and imagination drawings. You apply what you learn as you go. And I know what you mean about spending longer on a drawing...it seems obvious but you can't really draw without thinking. The more you think about what you're doing the better it is, and it usually takes longer because you get caught up in it. anyway, just rambling here...keep it up.

Hi Endregan, just want to tell you that your anatomy studies look really good - keep doing them until you feel confident about what you are doing.

As for your color works - try to read a bit about color theory.

As told above some good anatomy studies. Some of your no-ref bodies seem to me a bit out of line as if you´ve been going fast to the details and lose the coherence of the whole figure. Maybe it would be a good practise to use mannikin-figures like shown in the Loomis-books (and afaik Hogarth is using them, too) to get a better grip to overall anatomy and the movement of the body. I myself am using this mannikins all the time to check poses, movements and composition (not always successful but that´s another story ;)).

Keep your passion!

I can tell that you're very committed to drawing, and drawing a lot. You've been studying Bridgeman I noticed so obviously you're on the right track. Studies and life drawings are a great way to get around blocks and plateaus, especially for myself. Good work, man.

blasian is right. first and foremost you are showing the will to become a better artist. i believe that this is more important than having any "natural talent"
if you have no drive you have no motivation and without it you have no improvement. keep studying but remember to learn from brdigman rather than attempt to draw like him. he has such an appealing style it becomes very easy to teach yourself to draw like him rather than take the information in his sketches and learn to apply them to your own. keep up the good work and i cant wait for another update.

Thanks everyone so much for the encouragement and comments, I appreciate it very much! Sorry for not updating sooner, been organizing my room to fit a large table to do my art in. Been busy lately but I hope to dump some sketches every now and then as much I can. Below are replies to your comments and the next batch!!

jeff- I know what you mean too. Its great to study from reference, draw from life and such and then just use what we learnt and apply it from our heads on paper, and just go free with our minds. It's a great thing and I will be doing studies and then using my imagination, sort of evolving as I go with skill and then applying it!

jester- thanks for the kind words. I am not really focussing on colour right now as you can see, and they were about a month or more old - but they were attempts. I am hoping to study colour once I understand value better first... will be interesting to see the next time I paint!!

Fipse- thank you for taking the time to notice. I am not exactly perfect from memory yet but as I learn more and more the more things dont look right so I must erase and then fix it and such. The manikin studies sound good. I will make sure to double check and think about positions and keep drawing until i get it right. Will take a while and some time but Im up for it!

blasian - hehe thanks man. nice to know that what im learning has worked for others and lets me know I should just keep at it. :)

meta- Thank you, I have always been determined for what I love and I dont give up easy no matter what.. :). I will keep in mind that his work is stylised and try and work on the forms rather his linework, but it does get hard sometimes...but I will surely do my best to at least be aware I am drawing his contours and style. Thanks for the advice.

Here we go!

good to see an update. i can see that you are still drawing from bridgman. when drawing from him ask yourself some questions. how does he draw this? what muscles does he show? How does he describe the forms and what volumes does he pay attention to? these questions will allow you to be aware of why these lines are put down instead of putting them there because he has put them there. this thinking will allow you to make more conscious decisions when you attempt to render the body. keep it up

hey endregan...you're doing well :)
those studies look very good, and the poses in your last random sketches look pretty good, too. the main problem i see with your sketches are the proportions, i think. maybe pay a little bit more attention to these the next time. otherwise, just keep going! :)

those are some decent bridgman studies, but I think what your forgetting, or maybe just don't know, is that although bridgman is kind of a chaotic draughtsman, every line he's putting in his drawings are describing form. There describing where the musculature is inserting and how its strapping over the skeleton and bones. So alot of those lines are describing the directional flow of the muscles. One other thing, like alot of others said, slow down and do these studies real methodically. What I didn't see in any of your drawings, were the big shapes. Try starting out with big shapes and then work your way down to the smaller shapes. Just starting off randomly with line in a single point is alot harder. Its great that your taking and putting in the time to study them though. keep it up. Bridgman is really tough at first, but it gets easier.

Thank you tinyhands so much!!! Will try for forms and gesture over line... and will and have been taking a heck of a lot more time then I used to. I know I have progressed slightly and will keep pushing to keep at it. we can never plateau we can always have the drive for something better, different, unique, or exact!!

Hey these look very familiar ;) Hehe I've scanned all these endregan and I've told you in real life, may as well embarass you infront of this art community, that each time I scan a new set they show more and more improvement. I'm slowly trying to do some anatomy of my own :D These look great. I really loved the arm study, as I was putting that in I thought, damn that's nice.

tinyhands
August 7th, 2003, 12:21 PM
those are looking better endregan. One thing to remember also, which alot of people don't know, is that when bridgman taught at the art students league, he was drawing from a great distance away as well as above him. This was so everyone could see, because the class sizes were really large. So he was really erasing anything, so sometimes he'd be going over his own drawing to make a point of to specify what he was trying to teach. So often on alot of his drawings, there will be places that hes going over his own drawing. So when you do these, also try and edit so of the lines out too. Great job. Keep on doing them. If you want endregan, i can email you some of my old bridgman stuff, as i am in the process of getting a server. There kinda old but I think for where you at you could probably benefit, and probably get a better understanding of where you need to be taking these studies.

golgari
August 8th, 2003, 01:46 AM
the arm studies look pretty good.
your own stuff looks still somehow out of proportion...plus it's a little bit strangely twisted and partly flat. try thinking about breaking down the main masses of the body in simple shapes like boxes...like that, you'll both get a little bit more volumetric approach and it'll be easier to get them right in perspective...

endregan
August 13th, 2003, 11:19 AM
tinyhands: thanks for the comment! nice to know how bridgman did these i was always wondering :P. sure email me endregan@hotmail.com or link up your bridgman studies it would be appreciated!!

golgari: hmmm yeah my own stuff isnt from life so it isnt really perfect, but as i progress i assume i will slowly draw from my imagination with disciplinary form in mind. thanks for the tip :)

houah, that's _quite_ a batch. good studies (you posted one page two times, though?)
one thing i notice throughout most of your own figures is that they all have extremely strong neck-muscles, which makes them look over-muscely and clumsy - at least for my taste.

Great blackout! ;) Seriously, it helped you to improve a lot. However, when I compare your Bridgeman studies with your own drawings I discover a lot of squiggly hasty searching lines. I do them myself, and the more uncertain I am, the squigglier and darker they become - try to draw them lightly and finally try to find "the right line" and emphasize that. The proprtion issues you probably see all yourself, studying Bridgeman that seriously.

Keep up the good work!

yeah, the amount of your drawings is amazing.
those studies look very good. maybe try incorporating them more into your "randoms". like, when you'r sketching a full body in a pose, try to keep open the book with the arms and stuff beside you and draw the arm from the book, so that you get a feeling for not only how the arm looks, but also how to incorporate him into a full body-system.
also, if you somehow get the chance, maybe try doing some gestures from life in order to get a feel for setting up the body-poses. i don't think that you necessarily need a lifedrawing-class for that if you don't have the opportunity. just doing gestures and lifedrawings from people around you should help a little, too, i think.

Those are looking great endregan. Keep it up. As golgari mentioned, definately keep those books open while your doing your own drawings so you can apply what your learning from them. Also, if you want to add facial anatomy such as eyes, noses, etc. to your studies, pick up John H. Vanderpoels book called "The human figure" Every good artist I know has this book and has studied it relentlessly. Great to see you putting in the time.

Hi Endregan,

you´re really eager and learn at a rapid speed. I wish I had this energy at the moment.

You´ve been doing a lot anatomy in the last time and at your figures I see that you remember what you learned. I think the main prob at the moment are proportions. Personally I would recommend beside drawing your usual stuff going back for a while to the mannikins (maybe the Loomis-ones; I don´t like his anatomy very much but I think his mannikins are quite good). And don´t worry much about actionposes and anatomy but proportions.

Later on - with your knowledge about anatomy it shouldn´t be much of a problem for you to flesh the mannikins out.

Here we go again!

jeff: Thanks man you always encourage me :)

jester: yes my squigglies have to be there for some loss or gap between missing info I havent quite learnt or perfected yet...I must stray from doing it!

cattapillar: Oh thanks but I wouldnt put my name beside gogh, I have a longgg way to go but one day I might become a successor! anyone can do anything with practice and determination!

golgari: thanks for the tip I will do it more often, from this batch you can see me do some armpits with from bridgman then i do another page to try it out...im not quite there yet but things take time :)

tinyhands: thanks and i will look for that book, although books upon books can get expensive! well see :)

metal: i see what you mean I can see the anatomy coming along better than before and I am glad I have such good inspiration and encouragement from people like you and all of conceptart.org

fipse: thank you....I should try more mannikins and try it out for poses etc and get my proportions down infact: MENTAL NOTE: Do mannikins for proportions!!! THank you fipse for taking the time to stop by. You know one day well meet and sparr kungfu style :P

sumrow: I am trying to experiment as much I can but I dont have as much free time as I want but I will definitly keep trying new things of course. thank you!

Thanks for all the feedback it is much appreciated. enough of my talk heres the next batch ;)

hey endregan, good studies...what book are you working from? maybe try to find a full-body-look there and try do some studies from that, so you get a feeling for how all the parts connect.
and do some more lifedrawings. teach yourself to closely observe everything. the knuckles on your hand for example look pretty off.
another thing i noticed about your sketches is that when you're not sketching from reference, you tend to make the bodies "flowing" from the ribcage downwards. try to keep in mind that there are THREE main solids of the body: head, chest/ribcage and pelvis...

these are ways i used to learn how is a body ..
i give my opinion not ofently because i think i'm not very good neither in english nor in drawing...
i hope that i don't offend you...and that I give you good solutions even if i have a huge lake of knowledge...

good studies. the fingers look a little small to me here and there, though. but yeah, hands are hard. and they are important. it's always like that. the important things always are the hardest ones....damnit ;)
the proportions don't look bad.
i still think you should do a study of the neck muscles. hmm ;)
you seem to get a feeling for those pastels. the very last one you posted is really nice, considering colour and use of the pastels aswell as anatomy (and here the neck looks quite good, too). good job :)

Very good hand study. Keep going with the figure also, the more you do the better you get.
If you keep going at this rate everyday, three to six months from now you will see big improvement in you drawing.

One of the trick I would do to keep myself excite about drawing is pick couples of your best sketchs you have today. Then keep drawing everyday ( I mean every single day at least couple hours:but preferably more:, no skipping). Three months later, pick couple of you best from the last week. Compare them. Then you will see a big different and it's very exciting to know that you are improving, even if a little bit.

Keep it up!

golgari

:)

the hands look good. the fingers are not always perfect, but in most cases they are alright. just keep doing some more, i think it'll come with time.
same for your randoms. just maybe... try getting them more in-depth. and try feeling the main weights. you're working with that bridgman's guide to life drawing, right? bridgman has a wonderful thing there going on, with his dividing the body in the 3 main masses and then just playing around with them. maybe you should try to study this a bit and think of it. i think it's pretty helpful for getting your drawings more voluminous, and even partly for getting a feel how the body moves, where the weight lies, etc.
concerning the pastels - maybe try using less colours for now. it always looks so chaotic. just pick two harmonic colours (for example, complementary colours) and try to get everything done with these colours, maybe using different values of the same colour, but still not having such a colour-mix like now.
maybe also get some advice on how to stroke properly with pastels. your strokes look a little smudgy, too. i can't help you with that, though, since i never used pastells myself. daarken? or maybe look around the internet or the library if there are any articles / books on that thematic.

the key to pastels is layering. like for skin tones put down a very light layer of red first. do not press too hard though! then ontop of that a light layer of orange, then yellow. then ontop of all that you can start using the flesh tones and press harder. just like painting, use layers and save the highlight for last. hope that helps some!

I can really see some improvement with your drawings, endregan, keep it up! I noticed something interesting with your hand studies... you seem to have them down perfectly when it comes to the structures underneath... bones, muscles, tendons... but when you sketch hands with the skin on them, you seem less confident... odd :) Great work... I love the ink studies!

R_M
September 3rd, 2003, 02:35 AM
noticed the samet hing as buffaloe,

all your hands are linedrawings, maybee it would help you if you applied some shading to them. that would increase your 3D awerness of how and where the fingers are.

still you have improved so much since the beginning of the thread.

Iiori
September 3rd, 2003, 02:01 PM

Your collaberations are really nice as well.

golgari
September 3rd, 2003, 05:10 PM
hmm, doesn't look bad, but it's very messed up. make sure that you don't get too tangled up in this style, because it's pretty easy to cheat oneself in that rough style. make sure you always know how the things look like that you want to draw and not just scribble over it when you don't really know how the shape you're wanting to draw should look like.
hmm. don't know if i really got around what i wanted to say. anyway, just keep your sketches diverse ;)
oh, and another sidenote: be careful with that "fading into white" (you know, that stuff at the edges of your sketches...i guess you achieve it by choosing a really big white airbrush-dot and then just placing the airbrushstroke pretty off from where you want the fade to appear). if you're not careful and actually setting yourself a goal on what's it's purpose you're risking to overdo it, which often looks pretty cheap...

hm, yeah, i think you're slowly advancing, too.
the last page with randoms is heading in a good direction, those perspectives look interesting. you're not shying away from the lower body, do you? you seem to get extremely loose on the belly pretty often ;)
the pastels look a little better already. however, the grey makes it very smudgy, and it doesn't fit in to the other colours...maybe next time try not to draw any black/grey outlines at all. just do it like daarken said, lay one layer over the other, from dark to light. so just choose the colour you want to have, take it's darkest shade, start with that and add the lights to it...so that you have shades of the same colour and not a totally different colour, like black or grey in there...

my suggestion is that you could try to practice cell shading before you go on to more traditional coloring. I think it gives good practice in handling shadows and highlights. And once youve mastered basic shading mechanics you could move on. Because at this stage ur coloring looks a bit confusing. Shading and colors need to mimic the shape theyre on, urs appear slightly random.

the best way to learn how to paint is to paint from reference. experiment with different things and see how things work. the same goes for the figure drawing... .learn anatomy and do plenty of life drawings.

The more you do, the better you get. Observation is one of the most important thing in drawing and painting. Then apply to your drawing. Observe carefully then apply as accurately as you can. Speed is also really important...

hehe thanks xia i will keep trying...

next little bit. i have about 90% more that i did but here are a few i chose that may show you how im attempting figures lately. a couple of these i really like...its fun to sketch :)

I am taking Art Portfolio last year high school and im bent on decision... some of you may know from experience how i should go. I am set towards learning how to paint so i want to primarily paint most of the time for my works.

We have basically 5 main portfolio pieces and I want to do oils, acrylics, pastels and maybe mixed...

Is this a smart idea... ? I was thinking, we had to choose a theme for the year and im leaning towards... REALITY VERSUS FANTASY. which is broad- to keep my options way open and sort of experiment.

i will be drawing and painting but i would like any ideas or suggestions thanks!

Hey endregan, nice work :) A few suggestions for you.... youir self portraits seem to mostly be done from the same position, the same angle, and you have the same expression. Change it up a little.. move around, make a face and sketch it, etc. I know it's a tough thing to do with self portraits...

Also, the digital painting of the guy with no shirt and brown pants on.... looking good, but his head is way too small.

Overall, I see alot of improvement in your sketches... Keep it up!

zeroe
September 12th, 2003, 10:12 AM
i think your faces are a bit too elongated, making them seem abit wonkey. But other than that good work, you still ened more contrast with ur coloring tho!

Jeff Gran
September 12th, 2003, 02:09 PM
what up man. This one looks better, but you're right, not quite what I meant. Maybe try shining a strong light on one side of your face next time. It will make strong contrast which will make it easier to pick out the shapes. And try to go for broad areas of the same tone. also, try using a shade of grey as your color instead of black with variable opacity, this will allow you to scribble over a big area and not worry about your stroke direction, pressure, etc.

As far as painting goes, it's always good to experiment as much as possible, but painting is just drawing, but more complicated. So my advice is to keep working on drawing for a while. I think many painting ateliers and stuff make you draw for a year first, then paint in only black and white (or other monochrome) for a year, before you even get into color. Just my 2 cents.

i think the main problem with your latest sp is the shape of the head and positioning of the mouth.
the jawbones should end their curvature a bit further up and be smoother, to give a rounder impression. and the mouth should be further up, there were the curvature of the jawbone ends usually.

your latest self portrait already looks a lot better than the ones before.
and i like that dsg-painting, too. the only thing which still bothers me is your way of letting the each body kind of "flow" to the bottom. i always get the feeling that these people are made of clay or something like that, since you don't have many hard edges or clear seperations between the different extremities of the body (arms, hands, legs...)

Hey guys been really busy with school and life basically. in art class im doing an acrylic painting which is pretty exciting. learning how to paint and use colours etc. Its really fun and Ill try and get a picture of it when its all done.. :)

Ill try and get some recent sketches scanned in around the weekend hopefully :)

golgari: thanks man. yea i dont have as much exp with legs as upper but im more focused on upper for now then i am hoping to unify everything ive learnt gradually..

behemot: thanks for the links, it has helped me out and its pretty good to do a tutorial to make myself realise what i am doing wrong. i chuckle at myself. a couple hundred more heads to do...

lunchbox: no not really :). my heads longer than it is wide, thats the way my skull is. this is perhaps why it looks a bit odd and i really havent totally got my face down but im still working at it..

zeroe: thanks for the encouragement, ill for sure keep at it dont worry :)

xia: yeah man more sketching for sure...just havent had time to scan any of it..!

thanks for stopping by everyone

lookin better man. You'll get it! A little advice. Start trying to be more forceful with your mark making. In your SP for example, I would advise to not scribble white on an area that you've already painted grey. Yes, it might be darker than what you actually see, but you have to "up the contrast" in your head so you can put it down exaggerated like that... start with the biggest areas and shapes and move smaller as you go. keep at it.

Ive been real busy lately painting and school keeps me mighty busy as well. It's great how long you can spend on a painting and keep adding to it.

Im learning a lot about painting in general, and I forgot to mention I am taking an Acrylics course next week, so I will hope to improve my painting skills! Still looking and hoping for a life drawing course though

Thanks for the advice jeff. I understand what you mean. Now heres my head again! :)

ah a diffferent perspective for once :D
good work
however, when drawing mouths you always appear to draw the upper lip too large, making it seem abit awkward, unless you have such a large upperlip ;). Try making the lower lip larger instead. Also i think you shade in the creases in your face to strongly. i tihnk this makes them look more prominent than they really are, cause im sure you dotn look that old. If you make them lighter i think your face will appear smoother
good work

nice man. Your heads are getting better. Some of your poses still look strange, maybe try thinking of the structure of the body like you have with the head. For your SP, now just spend more time on it, try to get some more detail in there. also squint. youll notice stuff like the darkest part of the lips is usually the line down the middle.

Wow! I really love the improvement so far. Looks excellent. Your sp's are turning out a little odd though. I Think the reason is that you are just shading in pretty much, and not realyl focusing on details. Maybe working on lineart would help. Also doing it with pen/pencil would help out a lot. You also may want to study the features on the faces (lips, eyes, noses). It really helps out! :)

Sorry for the harsh stuff, but I'm a noob too :).

i went page by page, and could see it clearly.
i think all of us should take note of this and implement this into our own work. we should all keep working at it. stay focused and never give up. and keep challenging youself. and if you cant challenge yourself, get some one else to do it for you.

Jeff Gran

your latest bridgman studies are much improved. I love the crisp linework. I think you need to try to incorporate that more in your imagination work. When in doubt about a pose, draw a thumbnail sized stick figure until you can feel the pose. on your SP, you should try playing around with different brushes/settings. Don't be afraid to change brush sizes while your working either. You can do it really quick with the [ and ] keys. Also on tonal stuff the edge quality is as important as line quality in line drawings. Try switching to white with x (in photoshop) and sharpening up your edges. Keep on posting man I always check your stuff.

By the way, I'm not sure if I bother you or help you when I give advice...I'm no sage just trying to help.

Hey man:)
I tell ya what, its really awesome to see your dedication, you certainly put in alot of effort.
After doing ref studies myself and often thinking about the whole studying/learning process I have reavaluated what I think is a good process.
About 6months back I went through a B/W photo ref book and sketched each of the 350 pics. I followed that up with about 200 sketches of the skeletal structure.
Now if all that ref work was really that valuable then the benefits of having done it should by rights shine through in my work.. or so you'd think. But I really feel I learnt very little
from it.. or far less than I would've liked.
Heres my theory..
Acutally I just thought of an example that works aswell... At school I started to suck a Maths when it started getting into the heavy shit, algerbra etc.. I would just be wrapping my mind around one topic when the following day we'd move onto something else and it just swamped my brain, eventually I didn't take anything away from Maths at all.
So when I constantly injected tons of ref pictures, every anatomical aspect my brain wasn't focusing on any one point, plus I subconsciously got into a rhythm of trying to make the pics look accruate as opposed to thinking about how the elements came together and functioned(the real reason for studying at all). So all this information wasn't getting attention in the forefront of my brain.. I wasn't able to do any instant recall, for instance... Being able to visualise various body parts in new and more accurate angles, thanks to my ref studies. I found that all I had done was spend hours of time duplicating B/W photographs but hardly taking anything solid away from it.
Its was just a complete swamping of information, generalised
information as opposed to something exact and specific.

Conclusion:
I now feel the best approach would be to focus on the absolute basics, even the experienced artist should this. Aim to be able to render the human body..say in basic cylindrical forms in mulitple angles, before moving on to a vast array of detailed body parts and there relation to there neighbouring parts.
I also think that when tackling the finer aspects it would be in your best interests to nail something fairly solid, embed it in your mind so its there for good.. THEN move on to the next thing. I see all these ref works.. like 3 renders of feet.. move on to the next, 3 renders of lower legs etc. This meagre amount wont solidify anything, especially as people just move onto the next anatomical element and begin to swamp the brain with masses of undigested information.
Also I wouldn't recomment doing a huge sitting of ref work(unless life), too much will overload. I would do some ref work and follow it up with concept work, preferably revolved around what you have just studied, this acts as a perfect means to see how well the fresh info can be recalled. Plus recalling info and phsyically applying it is the absolute best way to keep it concrete.
All said this will obviously depend on the person. Some people are naturally better at remember things and recalling them. Plus it all depends on your enthusiasm for the subject. If you enjoy it more, you'll remember it more. Which explains why people like me don't remember any academic info from school.. it didn't interest me so why would my brain choose to store the info???.

Summary:
Absolute basics. Forms in space and relation to each other, movement, and accuracy of lengths.

Hitting the finer points: Multiple attempts at one element untill there is atleast some decent solidification in your mind.

.. I think there was something else but I gone done forgetted.
Hope that helps you anyway!(writting it down helped me acutally)

EDIT: Hey Targetes comment made me think about what I said. Remember its only an observation by me so don't take it on board as 'the way' or anything. If it rings some bells, then groovy, but be sure to carve your own process! :)

Lukias Brings up great points, never thought about it like that. Everyone has their own methodology and its great to share what we know.

Your work has progressed, continue pushing on. Continue working from refrence and life. Draw a few simple objects..eggs..cubes etc. Light them and render them. Try to get the poportions as accurate as possible. Try some still lifes..boring? yhea I know they are but do one or two a week.

most of all

Ask questions as well.

hope that helps

endregen.......A lot of work here in your book. I like the fact that you mix it up between graphite and digital. Your drawing is evolving so its hard to evaluate. I do notice that most of the compositions are broad in scale .....nothing close-up. I would like to see a subject fill the frame. Try to flesh out the details more. Make a stronger attempt to pin down with line what exactly is going on. Its ok if its not accurate at this time. Its the commitment that counts! Your self portraits are quite nice. The one below I particularly like. One last idea then I'll shut up would be to try starting off on a initial BG color. Wipe your BG to a neutral value and pick a complementary hue to paint with. This will allow you to work with a light and dark value different from the BG and thus set the subject off the BG easier! Anyways ...good work, Keep it up!!!

Lukias: Wow man I thank you for taking the time to type all of that up!!! I appreciate this. And perhaps I will learn from what you learnt. I am trying. Perhaps I am being too broad especially for me beginning. maybe one step at a time. studying the head 24/7 for a few months with breaks for free sketch and perhaps torso. I have focused mainly on torso. One can tell by my sketches, the legs are never really that well done. Again thank you for taking the time!!! Ill focus until I can draw one part 360 degrees CONFIDENTLY! THank you.... i can now go even further!

Targete: thank you! I love your art... and to have you crit is very welcome and i am flattered. I actually have been doing still lives its just i haven't gotten a picture of any. Im taking a painting course every thursday for 8 weeks...its helped me so much with value and colours. Hopefully I can post some soon as i get a pic!. I will try what you have said. Thank you

hey endregan i just looked through all your stuff and i must say you have improved! keep up the hard work it is paying off. you should start doing sp's with pencil or something where it is real hands on so you can measure and start to see the structure better. to draw well and get accurate drawings you need to measure, measure, measure than make marks, and repeat as needed. unless it is drawing from you imagination. but i think you get it :D also where have you been i haven't seen any portraits from you lately... keep it up!

Good work over and over again! I really like the last SP, you managed to get the lines down correctly (as far as i can tell ;) ). I also like the clean look that you achieved on it. One thing to look at is the contrast, try increasing it. It will help out a lot and wont take up much more time.

Hi endregan, good progress.

You could improve the portrait you did by

* shading the upper lip of the guy
* shading the space between the eyes and the brow
* shading the small area below the nose

Just look at a few photos to see what I mean.

Also:
* either use visible parallel strokes (no back and forward ones like you did) or by shading in a way that not strokes are visible at all

Hope this helps.

huge improvement on your latest SP. It looks a lot more structured than your earlier ones. The one place it falls apart is the lips, I think. Kinda like they were just stuck on. Keep working on it and try to make each line "feel" like the one you see, if you know what I mean.

Nice Bargue Drawing, though i think it is not finished yet... I would definitely try to get in some darker values, as seen in your reference. But anyway this is a good start man!
Your Still Life rocks as well... go ahead!

Yeah, nice stuff, keep pushing it and you'll keep improving :). I'd use a B pencil for darker areas on the bargue too, I don't think you can get darker than what you already have with the 2H.

Hey guys been a while.

Been busy with my studio project and as such, have been offline more than usual. School, my parttime job, and art :). Hopefully one day my job will be art :P.

Here are some sketches. I warn you most if not all of these are not studies, just quick from my imagination. Im slowly working my way down the body. Heads are hard enough Ive learnt. Still going at it though!

Here we go, a couple for now

Hey its been a while!!

couple weeks later and ive got a couple hundred more sketches, or close and a painting.

cant show you all of it though!

Something that opened my eyes - drawing from life helps so much. draw people in class and all around you. its starting to help me understand form. i care now less about details and even though i want to render something right away, the more patience you can render all you want when your linework is solid i figure.

hey man its definatly great thing to see such a huge jump in technique in only 6 pages of post..

if you want to pick up a GREAT way to figure out proportions i highly suggest a book called "lessons from michealangelo" my drawing teacher my first year of college (who i consider to be a master) swears by that book and taught us using those methods and it totally changed the way i drew, and still draw to this day...

endregan
December 4th, 2003, 09:32 PM
thanks mcm! good to seeya around. been real busy lately eh. i like being busy though, keeps us on our toes.

jnorish: i accept :) it should be interesting!!

siskol p: Hey thanks! there are many sketches and things that are not shown as it would take me years to scan it all, but its basically everything ive been through, and it shows the process. Im slowly getting there day by day!

i searched for that book, i found these

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0486238768/ref=pd_sim_books_4/104-5201995-0712742?v=glance&s=books

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823002225/104-5201995-0712742?v=glance

is that what youre talking about? couldnt find much else.

Thanks for the tip!

Endregan, I dig what you said about getting good linework, and if you have that, the rendering is more just like coloring... I've been thinking similar thoughts. Although, if you want to take it a step further, the *gesture* is really the entire drawing in my opinion. Sometimes (like earlier tonight) I just draw a few curvy lines, marking where things will go, and to someone else it probably doesn't look like much but I look down at it, and think "it's done, all I have to do is put the lines in now". You should check out the vilppu drawing manual for awesome explanation of gesture.

endregan
December 5th, 2003, 09:59 AM
Jeff- I know what you mean. One line in a certain way will make the inside and negative shape, creating something simple yet you know exactly where it goes from there or how the form plays. its great

i like ref pics, but drawing from life is much better, its not flattened and you begin to see.

so many books to check out. it would help if I had some links, I cant find any of these! :)

wow... I haven't been around in a while, and you are making huge improvements! Your lines are becoming much cleaner... like you're more sure of where to place them. The bargue drawing is beautiful! But I would agree with the suggestions to add more value. Actually, that would probably be a good idea for alot of your pencil sketches.. just to push them a little further, and give them more depth. Looking great, endregan!

yeah you have very bad habitual preconcepts of facial features. Study value nice and hard. and ur top lip always bothers me.. i bet u good money its not as puffy as the bottom. but its possible. study carefully and that dilligence will show. portrait-artist.org helped me reiterate old things teachers have said in past too. keep goin - chudds

thanks for pointing it out. ill have to study and restudy again.

ive been frustrated and not known why, wasnt improving too much. will work hard on facial features and proportions before i jump into anything else!

have to keep at it though. these reminders give me something to work on, i thank you again

December 16th, 2003, 10:49 AM
I guess you know the proportions pretty well when you see a front view of the face.
The front views look better than the others.

If I were you I'd draw some faces from reference but simplify ...
by recunstructing them rather than just drawing what you see.
At least that is what I think. You construct the front views because you know the proportions.
Viewed from a different angle you don't even try. You just copy.
Or not?

Studies like that should also help when you try to come up with a lighting situation.
Try to understand where the light sources are in the reference image ...
and then again: reconstruct the lighting rather than just copying the photo.

endregan
December 16th, 2003, 09:22 PM
yeah sig: heads werent from ref, only my sps.

i draw from life at school, people walking around.

i have to learn the basics and apply them to people so i can not draw what i think i see but what is there.

so much to learn :)

Oh and lately ive been having trouble when I try to draw sps head on, one side is slanted and looks odd and tilted, after i put the picture in the mirror to see mistakes.

any tips on this or am i just silly :)

December 16th, 2003, 09:41 PM
Yeah one way is u can occasionally do imaginary vertical and horizontal lines across or up and down the paper. check turns and curves in the features of the jaw.. nose.. hair line. outer hair line.. etc. I see some faults doing so in previous sp's now that u mention the one sided crookedness. nice that u mirror for check. good habits. lets make the bad ones good as well. go sketch another up.. try angles to tho. they much cooler... - piece - good luck - chudds

In the still life of the shapes, keep an eye out for the core shadow and reflected light -- especially on the round forms. This will help emphasize the rounded look.

Ok endregan here is what you should do next. Don't do a lot of self portraits this next update. Do one and make it look exactly as you see yourself in the mirror. Spend a long time on it...at least 5 hours...this will be very frustrating but you need to do it. Ask yourself questions like...are my eyes really that far apart...do my lips really look like that? Are my eyes really almond shaped like that or do they have a bit different curve to them? Do another bargue drawing as well hehe.

I wont be doing a lot of those quick sketches and such, even though I like them. I kind of reach a level and stay there...

I think its time to start quantity and not quality..

Ill be doing long self portraits, not half hour or hour ones. ANd yes, that means not one everyday. but why should i do one everday if im not understanding it? one in 2 weeks that actually looks like me will make me learn so much...THANKS MCM!

Ill be doing life studies, still lifes, sketching my hand and practising value. i will be beginning a bargue soon as well. i have observed this with my own work, and longer studies help much more than 1000 other studies!

Free sketches will be done only for a break. :) Cant leave my naked people behind!

Thanks for stopping by guys. Really busy... near exam time :)

Just when you thought I died!

I am currently working on my portfolio atm, most other work is on hold.

I am working on my thunderdome piece, sorry no previews it will be a suprise finished piece for once perhaps :).

The following images are what I have worked on during the past weeks. Not all of these necessarily will be included in my portfolio, even though it is creeping closer. I have a presentation at Ocad in 2 weeks and I will be mailing mine in to Sheridan shortly too.

I am looking for some critiques, where I can learn what I should do next time perhaps, or some small things I may be able to change. It is much too late to redo many things, so please take that to heart, don't bash too much!

So this is where I've been! Hope to post more soon. Look out for the T-dome piece :).

Good luck endregan! i'm sure it'll be cool, your progress in this thread is insane so i'm sure they'll see reason and consider the improvement you couls make in their caplable hands!

This was the girl in front of me for the portfolio interviews. It was a large room and we each had our own table, and two faculty members viewed and talked with us individually. It was interesting, I enjoyed it. You know me, I snuck in drawing people even in my portfolio day :).

Says Ocad interview not dead interview :P haha.

I miss SPS, but one thing at a time :).

I work a longgg time on that tdome ! It was fun. Probably my best digital piece so far, more in the future.

life drawing is hard to find around here. a lot far away. the drive would be worth it though. too bad i never got my license...that reminds me i should :) haha.

I love doing self portraits. i got frustrated and tried too quickly on like five of these.... This one i did I had more fun doing it, took more time. It may be slightly off and a bit on the grey side, but i like it.

Will be doing them more often

Hey endregan!

Can't think of what i would miss without checking back this thread from time to time.
You're doing great. I especially dig your paintings, just compare the thunderdome6 & 7 entries. Man, there are worlds between!

Best advice i can give is: "draw alot". And maybe do some more anatomy studies about the whole figure and the single parts of the body working together.
Go ahead!

hey man, your stuff is really improving. One of the hardest habits to break is to stop drawing what you think something should look like, and draw what it really is. Good luck, keep it up!

its our march break next week, so i will be drawing more than ever!

currently ive been drawing a lot from life.

http://www.visiblesurface.com/sketches/2004/mar12/scan4.jpg

I am also doing a sargent bargue, so I will post a pic of my progress soon.

During the march break I plan to spend a long time on one self portrait, and see how that works.

still searching for the best possible life drawing alternative.

There is one that is 4 nights, 12 hours that is close by for $48, and one further away for 8 weeks (8 nights)for $360 dollars.

I need an opinon, should I take the shorter one or longer one, what would I benefit more from, is it worth the amount of money and long drive?

I thought maybe after the 4 week one I could find an open life drawing course and practice.

Feedback is appreciated!

experimenting with oils. too used to acrylics so my oils arent the best. oils are great though, so fun to work with. especially with all the harmful chemicals and cancerous paints ;).

gotta get some gloves or something.. :)

The bargue:

camera distorts a bit, but you can get the jist of it. Few more days and it will be done eh?

I was looking through all your sketches, and I kept saying to myself "Ugh...I'm tired of seeing this, its all sloppy and boring." (No offense, but I'm being completely honest), then I saw the last picture! Its amazing! I really like it ALOT, it shows very good control and skill. I'd really like to see more work like that with such good craftsmanship.

endregan
March 13th, 2004, 12:03 PM
hey anarchy thanks for the honesty.

i am still barely understanding drawing, i have barely begun my journey. I will have been at it seriously for a year this summer, so I don't expect too much interest compared to the legendary artists around here! I am learning as I go, with the help of this community and every person that inspires me to keep at it.

A lot of my imagintive sketches are more sloppy compared to my studies, like the bargue, because i dont have the greatest handle on the human figure. Still trying though, without learning to draw from your imagination, when the time comes there may be no creativity. Maybe not, never been there yet.

I think you are correct though, the longer studies are worth much more than 1000 okay drawings. I think I will take my time more often, but the gestural sketches can be a bit loose, need a balance, right ? :)

That last drawing is very well done, was it from a painting or master drawing. If you do about 1 every week or more it will elevate your skills that much I also need that practice as well. Anatomy books are good as well, because they breakdown the human form for the artist.

Thanks man. ALways good to have some advice from the pros. You guys are so good, it is a crime not to take your advice.

It is a bargue, sort of a masters copy from a drawing I got printed out on 12 by 18. I am still working on it! It takes a while to train my eye, but I am getting there :).

GUESS WHAT! I AM IN THE LIFE DRAWING COURSE! 10 classes! YESS. Going to put a hole in my wallet but its worth it haha!
