Good sirs, this site rocks!! that was my first impression a moon or two past, and nothing since has proved me wrong.
SO here I go on my own, exposed and new and i hope you'll find some stuff in here that you like --- but I have a lot to learn still so any and all crit is greatly appreciated!! Big thing in my life, learning is :lens:

I have discovered in drawing and painting rare moments without time, I fall away but I am there completely --- and sometimes, just sometimes, on the paper something seems to somehow gain a life of it's own and I'm there, whipped along for the ride --- crazy fantastic!!!

anyway, I'll try to opdate regurlarly --- and sorry for the crappy quality. I don't have a scanner and my camera's shite, so I've adjusted the drawings in PS - but maybe for the worse as I'm a noob at these things (so if nothing is showing, that's why.. :nohope: ) --- if anyone prefers to see uploads where i haven't tampered with them (mostly "adjust levels auto" whatever that is but it did like a contrast thing) then holler and I'll put it up here.

My time's up, hope you see some things that you enjoy and plz --- give it to me straight!

After discovering CA I have been greatly inspired!!! I've hunted threads and read critz and comments and already I'm beginning to drawing more from life so hopefully I'll be able to show some new stuff soon :)

By quality do you mean as in poor quality of image? Or are you asking how long i have been drawing for and when I drew them?

If your are enquiring about the image quality I already plan to buy a scanner.
If you want to see any or all of the uploaded images uncut and unchanged speak the word.

I have been drawing for most of my life - which takes us close to 30 yrs. there has been gabs of course - but never for too long. I have drawn what i could see or imagine, what caught my facination and anything I needed to express, for better and worse, but have never recieved any formal training.
In 3 periods the oldest pieces here (mid '90) are yin/yan, darkness & chick in last post, and ancientman & brokenage in post1. Heavenhell (3rd post) is newest along with dino, woman with doodleman on her face, doodledance, and surrender (all post1). The rest fall somewhere in between and are mainly inspired mainly by Brian Froud and Alan Lee though generally I have not gained inspiration from a single source (except that i have worked far more with pencil than any other medium).
The treeman face last image last post is a tatoo i drew to a mate in Canada :)
Also my mood, focus & energy (and patience) plays a part to determine the style, study & expression -- maybe that also seems to make the quality differ?

After seeing some great skills and technique - and some gut and daring - in this forum i have been motivated anew to try ink.
Here's a piece i am working on now...

If I knew how, I would write this after the image, but well...
One of the things that are helping me out lots is working with my mental perspective. I don't know for you guys but me when I had started drawing something and found myself pleased with the process, I would also begin to feel uneasy about mucking up the rest...
Now when I begin something new or come back to something in progress, I say to myself, 'tis just a drawing.
don't know if you catch my drift, but this helps me relax and not stress about the product, but rather be in the process... which allows me to draw to the best of my ability... it like flows better --- rambling again :blah:

I don't really like the sideeffects when I contrast the drawing, but on the picture I feel it lose a bit o'contrast :\ --- soon to buy that scanner...

Best advice I can give at this point is to make some anatomy studies. Keep it up! :teeth:

I think I have always been hesitent about ink because i could not erase my mistakes... now I realize that the pen is just honest --- and my admiration for the masters deepen considerably!!!

Very nice style of drawing here, It is no doubt a very unique style that i really appreciate! keep it up I would suggest doing more hands and figure stuff to help you improve you seem to have a very nice grasp on rendering try doing some simple strucuture or line drawings of the figure. B-Man: Ya I'll work on creating different expressions... expressions in general is something I need to study more... but for me dragons are rarely wicked (evil) if that's what you mean. But thanx for the input!!!
And oh yes I'm tempted to draw a bear being one myself... but alas, in the face of B-Man's bears, I fear I put myself up for failure :) I'll give it a whirl one day--- like you say, good for the soul :)

ashrumm: ThanX for dropping by!! If you peek by again maybe you can clarify what you mean by line work --- like drawing without rendering?? without hatching? just blocklines?? For sure I need more work on hands - on anatomy in general... I'm slowly working my way into it :\

Although your shading is nice I have to say that your more finished inked peices seem the strongest, especially the old man's head tipped back with light from his eyes. Work on the strong contrasts and getting your peices to pop...and keep posting!!

bought a compressed charcoal pencil --- stumbled upon the nude reference thread opened by Davi (props to you mate!!!) and done some quick sketches from refs found there (no more than 15 mins each).

I see that you are shading a lot <> maybe to much <> remember in illusionistic drawing the job of dark and light is to reveal form.

If you find yourself shading and not thinking step away from your drawing for a few minutes.

I try to think of shading as shaping <> if it does not help clarify form you don't need it.

If it takes you away from you focal point you don't need it.

Darks and lights have three important jobs to do

1) Describe form 2) Position those forms in space (3 Create the focal point.

If you are not helping these tasks more than likely you are taking away from them.

Hi! Thanks for commenting on my sb. :) Some of your stuff here is pretty good. I might reccomend more hand and feet studies, as I'm noticing that in most of your figurative work, you're mostly hinting at (or entirely avoiding!) those areas.

I find it pretty amazing that you hit the spot on how I sometimes just carry on shading without really thinking about what I'm doing... but then again, if I had been drawing for about 600 yrs I would probably also know the drawing mind pretty well.... LOL
:::: I work slow though so I hope you (and all of you!) have patience with me as I try my way to incoporate this keen advice into my works...

BohemianChaos: Thanks for the words. I know hands and feets are subjects I need studying more. Actually I just ordered a Hogarth book on hands so hopefully that will help me improve...
Also when i do quickies like the post above those areas usually tends to get glossed over... it is not an excuse, for I hint/avoid precisely because they take me longer time and demand more intense focus, and sometimes that's just not where I'm at... But thX anyway!!!!!

So the update. I haven't posted for a short bit, have been drowning at work ---- finally got the new boulder wall up at work so I'm thrilled, but the kids (work with troubled adolescents) was swarming it before we had time to get on top of it --- several hurt themselves, a couble of half-serious fights and one entry to the emergency room...

Thanks for your comment b.one, was enlightening to read. You have great interest in what you do, so that should be your fuel to draw. Doing just that will let you improve. One refined suggestion, keep this in your mind, when penciling keep the lines you draw firm and the shading very close, so that at the end u dont see lines, but an illusion of your imagination.

Yeah I got pretty caught up in that one "heavenhell" --- actually it came about after I stumbled across wayne Barlowe's site and got fucked in my mind for some days after seeing his works, and using this drawing i let it get its space... and then it just kindof took a life of it's own and wanted to become... well what it became...

hmm, keep updating and keep drawing. you have a good start, but id say you should do what im doing now. stay away from the illustrating, and focus on studies HARDCORE. ive recently been told this because it is true for me too. You do not have enough knowledge yet (like me) to begin doing ur own illustrations. i mean, yea it keeps drawing fun so keep doing them, HOWEVER your main focus should be the studies... Keep it up, I hope that wasnt harsh, just trying to help :) CHEERS

I realise that I have plenty to improve, but for me, what comes 100% first is the joy, nay the sheer LOVE of drawing... Prohibitions and joy rarely mix...

Hey thanks for the words and encouragement in my thread! You really have a gift in encouragement. I have to go look at your art next time because they're all thumbnails in my pc and wont upsize...

The ones that are big are the figure charcoals, So try more doing construction using simple shapes. But it being very quick you were probably going for the overall appearance?
