Bear witness to ANT.
Let me tell you all.... I kinda took Ants concept position here at Legend, when he moved on last year. When I got here and saw all his concepts for Unreal II I almost crapped myself. I really had a case of the cold sweats for like two weeks. Try as I might, I could never match his level of detail or render quality.
Not only is he a master of the pencil but the shapes he comes up with hurt my brain.
I had to convince the guys here that they would have to live with my style and just let Ant go..... let it go man....
Thanks for the cold sweats Ant. I am better for it.
Jay
ps you need to move this stuff the the "finally finished" forum. You are going to piss people off calling these sketches and doodles. ahahahahahah

I went to a little trade school in new jersy "The Kubert School of Art" its all i could afford at the time .....i draw a lot ....if i feel like something is not looking good in my work i keep at it till i fix it or break myself trying to perfect it.....

it's great to see you post, i've been familiar with your work for quite a while. the way you handle a pencil has been very inspirational. i hope to achieve the control you have over textures.
one thing that has always struck me though is that allthough you seem perfect in the technical stuff, your anatomical stuff is sometimes flawed.
in my opinion the arms for the merc armor seem to short. that could be the way you wanted it, but it strikes me that way. if i could give advise to improve on then it would be: perfect your anatomy.
great job, hope to see more from you

Hey Hawkie, I can see why you were sweatin at replacing this guy, he is kick ass, those renderings are sweet, my favs are the mechs and weapons. Excellent control with pencil, do you prefer pencil over Marker work? since pencil takes longer? would love to see any marker work you have since I love both pencil and marker.

Wow man thanks so much for sharing these. Not only are they inspiring and a lot to take in, but it's always great to see what goes into actual products that we're all familiar with. The art is great, and it's really good to know companies are keeping standards high for concept art and that they push that part of the process. What this also shows me (which is a good thing) is that there are companies out there that can take detailed, enriched concept art and use it to it's fullest potential. It must be a great working environment.
Like I said, thanks for sharing these. Great drawings and very inspiring. I'm always juiced at proof that a concept artist can go nuts and have the art be respected. Can't wait to see the next release.

I work on photocopy paper 11x17 ...the brand i use is called Great White its a 140 pound paper weight ...that just means its a bit thicker than most......the nice thing i like about this brand is that one side of it is a bit slick to the touch...that side is great for marker comps it smoothes out your stroks a lot ....makes your work look a lot sleeker .

Huh. I was underwhelmed with U2:tA, but now it's just criminal. The game felt like there was a bunch of discarded depth, and to see all these concepts it just makes it feel like there's a lotta cool stuff we missed out on because it got cut.
And the rightmost Aida concept is incredibly hot.
Shame they used the halter-Aida in the game. I kept thinking to myself "Holy hell, what's the freakin' polycount?" rather than admiring the scenery with the model they used.
This is great stuff, anyway.

awesome work... kids, this man can show you a lot of things you can do with a pencil. I, however, can show you how to render a person unconscious by providing someone with another windpipe via insertion of the HB pencil... me is teh leet green beret! i can kill you with a pencil! haha!
but seriously, this thread deserves a few more pages of replies, and... uhm... to be bumped to the top!!!!!1!

*Sheesh* Your work aint bad... great attention to detail.
You say you find somthing you need to work on, and you perfect it. I guess the only thing you need to 'perfect' would be the human aspects, I.E. faces. You have mastered a graphic technique to a T. Recently tho, I have found it can cramp the brain when it comes to the human form (Geoff Darrow's brain must hurt. Big time.). You should take a day off here and there and not create any mechanical objects and focus on just the human form. Dont get too close to the paper...stay loose... dirty and messy is the key. It 'refreshes' you and helps the next day when you go back and work on your tight mechanical work. Keeping this balance is what artists like Da Vinci and ol' Michelangelo did on a regular basis and can be likened to mental 'aerobics and weightlifting'.

wow, that is smaller than i thought, considering the great ammount of detail in your work. it's funny how i use sort of the same materials. i use a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil often on 11" x 17" strathmore comicbook paper. it's just that i find the strahtmore paper a little too course. making it harder to create smooth surfaces and adding in detail. little too much texture. i ofthen prefer windsor & newton sketchbooks because of the paper they use. great texture, really white paper, and heavy.
i added normal pencils ot my repetoir as well, because i do find that mechanical and normal make a difference.
