Crud Buttowski - Space Trucker
Here we go...
Crud Buttowski - Independant Intergalactic importer/exporter. Crud spends almost every moment, piloting/driving his SilverGlide 6000 Pantecnicon (a space truck) between job after job. Mostly legal, but Crud has been known to do the odd backhander; a box of Ribos 6 Angel Pineapples (which give an extra ten years of life to those that can afford them) slipped in amongst the crates of Poot Chickens, just help a bit with the up-keep of his trusty rig. Perpetually cheerful, except with other Space Lane users, whom he just regards as an inconvenience, he's always on the lookout for the Rozzers (an old British Earth coloquialism meaning police) or a couple of hot hitchers. Puffing on his cheroot and either chatting on the SCB (space citizen band radio) or singing along to his favourite choon, the days couldn't be happier for Crud.
He can be alien or humanoid. It's up to you. Just have fun with him in any style you want!
1 = Trucker... sort of.
2 = Cheerful
3 = Not particulary a master of personal hygeine.
Make sure your picture contains these - you will receive 3 VOTES for each topic covered.
Please try to save your progress - maybe a nice tutorial is comming out.
BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. The host will make the selection.
DON'T FORGET YOUR PRIZE! THE WINNER OF THIS ROUND WILL SELECT THE TOPIC OF THE NEXT ONE!
And will assist me in selecting the entries for the poll. In one week we'll have a new client.Vote him now <3

This is as far as I could get this week. I don't think it'll go to the polls, but I'd thought I'd share my approach anyways.
Crud Buttowski is the offspring of Chuck and ^(*^(*^(% Buttowski (not sure how to pronounce the mother's name). He's the result of one of Chuck's pit stops out in the Void, Sector 13, where he picked up a species not seen in these parts. The two galloped of into the big dipper, one thing led to another, and so we have Crud. Crud says he's got the best attributes: his dad's occupation and brains to his mom's charming smile and good looks. Crud hopes to bring honor to the family name by doing the best he can, trucking it amongst the stars.
That's what I got. Cool entries guys and best of luck.
April 9th, 2007, 06:49 PM
Nice topic - this Crud fellow is certainly on much more familiar ground than Petra...
April 9th, 2007, 06:50 PM
This sounds damn fun....
April 9th, 2007, 10:23 PM
Here's a rough sketch I did. Not sure if I will be able to complete this I have so much stuff to do by Monday. Anyways, I see lots of good stuff here keep up the good work guys!
April 9th, 2007, 11:29 PM
sure, but maybe unfamilliar ground is where you grow on. i must admit, i could do more reps on a space trucker, but, a skanky 60s gal would have excercised different muscles.....
April 10th, 2007, 03:08 AM
Aaaah go on then, I'm in on this one :D
April 10th, 2007, 05:38 AM
sounds like fun!
April 10th, 2007, 12:04 PM
Here's my WIP, making the mecharm i realised it has resemblance with a character from Disney's Treasure Planet.
Meet Crut 'Spacebubble' Buttowski. There isn't a place in the galaxy he hasn't seen. From the far waterjungles of Gasda to the icy planet of Kleusoerloe Crut's bin there, delivering whatever it is he's got in his SilverGlide 6000 Pantecnicon. Farting and swearing but always polite to a handsome lady. Crut's specialy known for his jokes, the one about the Teloshian Fasdagh comes from him lol.
April 10th, 2007, 12:05 PM
Ok, so here is my initial wip. He needs a tough rig and a sweet babe(or a sweet rig and a tough babe).
Uh-oh Tommoy, looks like we found the archetype pretty quickly. Mine looks like my dad.
Are we allowed to post a wip, then update it or should I hold off till its finished? If so I can take this sketch down
until its refined. I am new but I thought I saw people doing that in the Petra Hepburn chow.
Ok, so I decided to make an illustration of it and now I've gone off the deep end. No turning back, even if it doesn't
get finished before the deadline.
Workin' on the pants...
April 10th, 2007, 12:18 PM
Wheres Lukavi???? This is right up his alley...
April 10th, 2007, 03:16 PM
Penumbra, it's no problem to show your WIP, it just fun to see how entry's devellop and maybe you get some advice on your work too. About your WIP: hope you look like your mum.
April 10th, 2007, 09:59 PM
some thumbnails I managed to knock out at work
April 11th, 2007, 02:07 AM
Wish I had time to get past a sketch, but work got insane this last week.
April 11th, 2007, 02:44 AM
I will try this but I am doing the COW too so I may not be able to finish. UPDATED...again! No time to color but this is my final line art. I needed to do a little bit of tweaking of the line in a few areas. Enjoy! :-D
April 11th, 2007, 04:53 AM
Just for kicks, here's a lo-poly 3D model I did years ago...kinda fits the character.
April 11th, 2007, 08:30 AM
Looks like Penumbra's right: the achetype has been found quite quickly!
Here's my first doodle, Crud having some refreshment at a diner:
April 11th, 2007, 10:17 AM
Ha ha ha that's awesome Posh! I like his boots and the belly is just perfect. Can't wait to see where you're going with this one.
Migsta > Very nice indeed!! I like the concept, original of you to go with the skinny alien type. Nicely painted.
Rogzilla > Nice sketch, I like the rocker look he's got, and the T-shirt is cool :D I'd like to see some more details on him, sci-fi clothes or props or something.
Rustylynn > Good start, just don't forget the sci-fi element :) Give him something that brings this trucker cowboy into space :)
Penumbra > Ha ha very funny sketch indeed, I'd like to see this one finished :D
Tommoy > Love the piece, yes he does look a bit like long John Silver in Treasure planet, but not too much. I really like that friendly look he's got, looks like a nice guy.
April 11th, 2007, 11:52 AM
Great stuff guys.
This pic is going nowhere i'm out.
April 11th, 2007, 03:14 PM
Hey people I hope you will accept me in your drawing company :) here are my baby steps:
I did some referencing for the truck :)
April 11th, 2007, 03:25 PM
Thanks for the comments Kredepops. Yeah, I know he isn't very sci-fi yet. I kinda just wanted to get an idea of his personality, then start molding him into the scenario. I think I may make him a mutation or something. I wanted to give him a robotic arm but that has been done already. :-/
April 11th, 2007, 03:54 PM
Hehe rogzilla, he's got legs too!. ;)
April 11th, 2007, 11:43 PM
my crud wip.
April 11th, 2007, 11:48 PM
There, I've updated my wip...I hope to get more done on Sat. I should be working rather than playing but I can't help myself.
April 12th, 2007, 01:55 AM
this one has Mr. dixon`s name all over it... yup.
*nudge nudge wink wink*
April 12th, 2007, 05:52 AM
oooh. Im gonne try and do some damage on this one.
April 12th, 2007, 08:30 AM
Not too sure about my initial sketch, may go back to the drawing board and make it more readable as a trucker - thought I dont know if him filling his space truck up at the garage is indication enough?
Here's where I'm at after working some more on todays sketch
Crud Buttowski is so proud of his body that he ordered his custom spacesuit in a flesh tint, he even went as far as having his tattoos painted on the suit. Crud isn't known for being the most tasteful creature in the galaxy.
April 12th, 2007, 09:24 AM
Wow, Great work so far guys.
here's what i came up with.
April 12th, 2007, 09:45 AM
Here's a preliminary of my entry. I wanted to do something a little different, so I put him in a pea cap and make him more of a teamster.
Slow going here. I've had a rough week: trans-Pacific flight, fell asleep at the gate, missed a connection and had to sleep on the Houston airport floor. Here's the base of what I'm working on; if the final ends up a turkey, at least I've got an interesting design from which to model a new 3D character.
Curses! No time to finish this one, and it was just starting to show promise. On the upside, I did get to attend my wife's friend's wedding and kick back in Chapel Hill. Nice work, y'all.
April 12th, 2007, 12:10 PM
Is it me or would dexter from attack of the clones be a great character for this CHOW.
April 12th, 2007, 02:13 PM
Is it me or would dexter from attack of the clones be a great character for this CHOW.
That's funny - I've been doing my best to not swipe from that same idea!
April 13th, 2007, 03:02 AM
Here's my WIP
I'm trying to think about other elements I can add to not make him look so cliche, but at the moment i'm a little too tired to think.
April 13th, 2007, 01:47 PM
sozo > like it a lot. Hope you finish and add some sweet highlights. Good character design.
April 13th, 2007, 01:57 PM
I might keep going on this, but I might allso call this final.
it all depends on things.
April 13th, 2007, 03:37 PM
Originally in business as All-Space Family Movers, the intergalactic trucking concern now known as C.R.U.D. Buttowski came into being when partners Chuckie, Robbie and Uncle Dickie Buttowski failed to yield at an Asteroid Crossing after too much "weed, whites and wine." An Emergency Response Team from planet Mekka-Nikka MCLVIII gathered up the bits and pieces and was able to make on-site repairs, but having no knowledge of human anatomy, and little interest in it anyway, used all the recovered parts to build a single functioning maxi-mega-freight-hauling-machine.
Chuckie, Robbie and Uncle Dickie took it all in stride, applied for reconstituted single-entity status (and thereby dodged three ongoing investigations by the Intergalatic Revenue Service), re-incorporated as C.R.U.D. Buttowski, and ever since have driven all the spaceways, from Tuscon V to Tucumkerry 12, moving any cargo, anywhere. Their motto: "We'll haul anything, even your ass!"
whew! got this in before the big blizzard hit and (most likely) took down my power!
April 13th, 2007, 09:53 PM
Hi everyone, just been lookin around...
Tommoy-well realized character and cool graphic rendering
Rustylynn-I think i know that guy
Rogzilla-Love it. He looks slightly menacing, in a jovial way.
Migsta-The most cultured character(it must be the pipe).
Poshspice-You are a real storyteller.
Mitze-a good effort (many of mine end in the recycle bin).
MaliDM-the figure is great and the rig has a nice truck feel to it.
the haggard-is that flannel?
monstertree-i like his expression in the final.
MeTaL-Mike-good start, just needs refinement.
gtgauvin-i like the update, especially his expression.
Sozo-that guy's a butt kicker-i like the pose.
ikuru-he looks like a trucker/ mechanic, nice.
masque-it looks like its going to be interesting.
April 14th, 2007, 12:36 AM
Huh, protruding bellys and sleeveless shirts must be some kind of universal trucker morphology.
April 14th, 2007, 12:46 AM
Making his way through the stars in pantaloons and his one-of-a-kind atmo vest, Crud Buttowski knows a ready smile and a tip of the cap will get you through Customs a lot quicker than that tough guy act.
April 14th, 2007, 07:11 AM
Woohoo! Lots of great looking Cruds! (I never thought I'd say that!)
I'm doubting I'll be able to finish this week, for various reasons. Darn it... But I'll try and tighten up my sketch a bit.
April 14th, 2007, 05:05 PM
I'll be done with mine today....lotsa good entries:)
Ikuru, I'm curious how yours is gonna turn out, love them boots, plus he looks italian....you just can't go wrong with a spaghettiman;)
April 14th, 2007, 05:22 PM
Initial Crud Sketch ...
Dragging it along ...
Here we go...finale
April 15th, 2007, 12:40 AM
I was so encouranged by the 2 votes that I received for my chow debut piece that I decided to participate again for this week's character. Thanks David-david and edujante. Thanks too for those who gave feedback for my #66.
Started with sneak ballpen-on-printer-paper concepts at work ("Careful now. The whole floor is crawling with chartered accountants.")
I thought about just doing 2 vignettes, but the fun design took the better of me.
So in comes the "fourth wall" breaking center piece as the foreground.
April 15th, 2007, 01:24 AM
Monstertree-- HAHA! I love the poot chicken running around
April 15th, 2007, 08:11 AM
here`s a quick WIP (about 40 min):
the deadline is today, and this is all the time I had for this one.
I`ll try and make some more time, and hopefully get it done.
if I miss it - I miss it.
April 15th, 2007, 10:23 AM
Hi everyone!!! Long time no CHOW!
here is my entry, crits and comments welcome, cheers!
so, here's crud!! Hes just delivered some east brunswick flotatos, for the mega chip factory on chroma 5. The happy look on his face is probably there due to the fact that Cruds fave snack is the flotato chip! I think he will be spending some time on chroma 5, taking in the free samples he can expect for his delivery duties! Dont forget to tune in wednesdays for "Cruds CB Chatback" on the latest intergalactic news in trade!
April 15th, 2007, 10:33 AM
quite a few bellys and similar poses haha! Although - if you google for trucker pics - its pretty much what u get! hehe
April 15th, 2007, 12:41 PM
Heres my Crud. Nothing special. Same potbellied and cigar puffing trucker. But i enjoyed doing this 1. Nice work everyone! :)
April 15th, 2007, 02:38 PM
updated to my final, above.
April 15th, 2007, 02:46 PM
This was a fun topic; like many others, I couldn't resist from exploiting the standard trucker stereotype. It was just too tempting to create an image of a fat trucker. I suppose if you're asked to create an immediately recognisable image of a trucker, you would portray a fat grizzly guy with a hat, and other trucker-style garments. The image I created still had some work to be done before I could truly call it finished, but I've grown slightly tired of looking at it.
There are some nice entries, as usual. In particular, I like foofoo's, Tom Garden's, and Penumbra's (even though it's not finished yet).
Any crits or comments would be appreciated; I'll try to save my comments for the poll.
April 15th, 2007, 04:11 PM
Got a couple of hours to spare, so here's a quick entry:
April 15th, 2007, 06:01 PM
Crudeline Brutowsky, an strong trucker, the only woman trucker in the universe
April 15th, 2007, 06:25 PM
It's a big and varied universe, but nobody forgets the first time they met Crud.
