ok guys, this is my first post / thread on this forums so please be gentle :)
i've been browsing this page for quite some time now, being absolutely astonished by some of the artwork i've seen here. most of you guys are practically art-gods in my eyes....now, im writin in this section as im kinda too afraid to put it anywhere else, my work is but a mere sketch compared to everything else on this site, although i consider it finished :)
now, im a complete dumbass considering photoshop and the rest of the programs you guys are using to create / adapt / enhance your artwork, actually, i'm quite new to drawing at all... i'm a medical student, and it all started with me drawing pictures of some organs from anathomy atlas my way, as i didnt like the way they were presented in the books... the people round me said something about me being talented... well all i could do back then is laugh and blush...
im a player of world of warcraft, and i was always astonished by blizzards creations, creatures, monsters, enviroment, but never found enough of their concept-art. well, i drew a picture of my warlock, and just couldnt stop after that :)
as i mentioned, my highest reach is a yellow paper and a black 0.5 rotring pen...all of these are photos i took with my cellphone, and all i ask is just a simple comment if this is really worth anything...
but please, dont make fun of it or be harsh, as i said, im nothing but a bug compared to the art lords residing on this page :)

bollocks you beat me to it, these are great sketches. I to played WoW (taking a break) but I must say for a beginner those are very good, and you've grasped the cartoony style of the game with it. i don't know much but I say most of it is fine, just watch the chest on the night elf and maybe widen the legs a little on the undead. though i wouldn't really take my critisms too seriously as i am a noob artist ma'self :)

ye, i realise druid is somewhat fucked up, not only his chest, the shadows on his upper legs dont really fit his facing... but ty :) its a real ice-breaker

Those are pretty impressive for someone with no prior experience. What I noticed right off the bat is you'd need to work on your perspective. The pillars in the picture of the Undead Rogue are at different angles, it makes them look crooked.
Also the feet in a few of them could be foreshoretened a little better.
And hey, since your a med student you'll get a first hand look at all the anatomy and skeletal structure most of us only get to see in workbooks. That's a pretty cool advantage.

something new, hope you like it.... :)

yeah, really nice sketches and very skillful. just two crits. not sure about the proportions in your first and third sketch. the legs seem to be too long and the head too small. but i´ve never drawn fantasy stuff therefore I could be wrong. Other than that for me they look really good...

ye, i realise that the hands on most of the drawings look a bit too large compared to the bodies themselves...
you see, i draw my inspiration from wow...and in wow, teh characters are...well...a bit disproportional :) i know human proportions, relations of length/size between bones-limbs....but you cant really expect all the anathomy to be exactly human ;)
anyways, this is a new one....and prolly my first costum made drawing....its a friend of mine, tauren warrior (named Holymage) in a full tanking set and wielding Quel'Serrar, "The High Blade", hope it comes to your liking although it was a bit hard cause the armor is mainly black/dark blue, so it was kinda hard to make all of its parts visabe :)

Lo', really lovin' your pen work there, man. Especially the gryphon, eredar, Tier 5 orc warlock and that tauren warrior. Bog Lord is also very, very nice, but I feel like rain draws away from the quality of that particular work.

ifans, you really need to get a scanner... and as far as a crit is concerned, you need better values in your shading and better quality in your lines. I can't comment on the subj matter as I'm not a WoW player or appreciate it... ;)

I've never played WoW so I can't really offer much in the way of style or anything, and I think you're ah-maze-ing. Okay? You bring a lot of life into your sketches with just and pen and you ah-maze me. XD But if I were to point something out it would be the feet, sometimes they look a little unbalanced, but it's only one minor critique really. THere might be more if I could see the picture clearer, though I'm not quite sure I believe you're 'quite new' to drawing. These ink drawings are very skillful.

well, time for a lil update....thx everyone for critics! i really appreciate it and will try to keep em in mind....well, lenguin...i actually am...quite new to drawing...the first pictures i made were indeed in anatomy classes and i posted them in the anatomy study group (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=92957) as they came in handy (bones) :) therefore, i seem to be uncertain of some issues (shading, perspective) and try to solve them in the way i figure to be the best....its kinda hard :)
i always try to have in mind that there should be only one lightsource i should be focused on, but then again, as i said, this kind of pen isnt really forgiving...once you fuck up you can only try to shade it out or tear apart the picture....
i did the tearing part a lot of times, believe me....but sometimes, which is btw, case here, i fuck something up at the very end and dont have the heart to destroy it afterwards :)
to be more precise....well, this should have been a picture of deathknight...i trided to remember how Baron Rivendare looks like, but i couldnt really fit the pieces of the puzzle in my mind so i mostly improvised.... in the end i fcked up his face, which you can see in youtube movie :) it wasnt really that bad, but i just couldnt look at him that way so i blackened out the whole head and made it a shade in a hood....then angain, i think this even made him look more....serious? :)
thanks again for the crits and nice words, hope you keep them coming (both of 'em :))

wow, ty all so much on crits and nice words... i try to spend most of my free time brushing up my skills and well, i can see that im at least more confident while drawing then i was at the beginning...
anyways, i was thinking bout getting a tablet, since i daily see extraordinary work people do in photoshop, plus, it would get me rid of the frustrations i often have while drawing with the pen...its ireversibleness (ye i made this word up :teeth:)...i m currently at 0% knowlage of photoshop (just used gimp few times...never really to draw :)) but i guess, with few manuals and tutorials i could get the hang of it....
...i can see most of you use wacom's tablets which are...reeealy way to expensive for me (we dont get any scollarships for studying here in croatia :( well at least most of us dont) and i've seen few Trust's tablets that costed bout 100$....now i'm interested, are these ones worth it? i mean, can they be useful or are they just rubbish not worth buying...cause even 100$ here is really a lot...

The best bet is to go with a Wacom Graphire4 6x8. Do NOT get the Artz or the older Graphire models, nor the Trust tablets. They are utter garbage.

You can get good results with a mouse too, if you wanted you could always try an optic mouse until you can afford a tablet pen or something, they're pretty cheap. (Over here anyway) it just takes a bit more patience.

I like the sketches. I also play WoW and can vouch for you in saying...yup the proportions in WoW are wacky.
Now that we know you can draw a character in relaxation mode...time to make up some poses ;) I want to see that Orc Hunter get a beating from my Night Elf Warrior. So a nice pose, some action, and a nice background, what do you think?
Hehe, nice work man, really.

definately dude :teeth: ...that in fact was my first intention, but i wanted to practice a bit and perfecting their natural looks...as you can see, the shading and perspective has improoved a bit over the time (compare the druid and the hunter :)) so i think it might be time to let my imagination loose...but first, i need to do a portrait of my girlfriend, i promised her :)
so...into the battle ^^

well, heres a thingie bit more complicated than the previous ones....the idea was a night elf rogue getting beaten up by a big tauren warrior :teeth: heres a lil sketch i made...i think i might develop it...the positioning and everything seems right
ill put a thumbnail...too afraid to put the big one :)

Nice infans...personally I would put even more motion in your last "battle" sketch. Right now it looks like they are both standing still, swinging at each other one after the other. I suggest you exaggerate the moves.
For example, how did the warrior strike? Was he charging towards the rogue at the same time as he brought down his axe? If so were his legs in motion? Maybe he was not running, but swinging that huge axe would have made his body tilt forward, balancing on one feet only, trying to keep his balance?
And what about the rogue? Not sure from the sketch, does he get hit or not? Does he dodges the swing? If so he could be in midair jumping sideways, while at the same time lunging for his final blow, aiming for the warrior's flank... But if he's hit by the warrior's blow, he could be crushed down on his knees, or thrown back, legs and arms extended, falling back to his death.
So much possibilities ;)
Sorry i'm not trying to lecture, but I come from a comic-book-super-hero environment so i'm big on movement...whenever it's appropriate =)
Keep up the great work infans!!

lol, should have read this one sooner :teeth: i really appreciate your ideas cyclop, you've pointed so many things i should have taken care of before, but well, i got a lil ahead of my self and finished the characters....heres the thumbnail...
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9333/dsc00200to5.th.jpg (http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00200to5.jpg)
as you can see, the nightelf did get hit....kinda badly too (straight into the brachial artery -> not really good for him :)) i composed the NElf's pose having in mind that the blow straight to the neck with this huge axe would get him blown a bit back, while he would definately be agonising in that moment (the closer you cut someone to the head - the more pain he feels)
now, for the tauren, he does seem same in size as the night elf but thats only cause hes at least 6-7 feet away from him....for that big mofo its kinda hard to jump around while swinging that huge axe...but you were definately right, he really does seem quite unnatural standing firmly on the ground....
but well, repetitio est mater studiorum.... still have lots to learn :)
btw, considering the enviroment, i was thinking bout some stone bridge they might be on, crumbling perhaps...but anyways, i think ill leave this as it is and start workin on some new piece, got really excited bout this battle scenarios :) and really cyclop...ty so much again for this :)

Hmmmm….. do you happen to have any originality in anything you draw? Or is just tracing screenshots all you can do. I too play world of warcraft, and at times feel it would be fun to make some artwork based on their characters… but I don’t think only doing that is a good thing… it is not gonna help you progress in your art skills, or at least help you get very far. Funny you would ask people to “…dont make fun of it or be harsh…” about your thread on your starting post and then comment on jc066's (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=95505) thread saying “I know this might sound cruel…”.
It looks like you may have some artistic talent and it might go farther if you use it right, but taking screenshots and tracing them is not something I would consider better then her anatomy sketch…why? Because hers is drawing to improve her skills, where as yours is just copying of blizzards characters and poses. If you would actually draw a character in a pose that is original and not something from the game then I may take back some of my comment on your skill… but that will be when I actually see your art skills rather then your ability to copy from the game.
Now, about how "thought" and "development" being needed before posting art work in CA, I suggest you take that thought into your comment posting rather then your art posting… because potential employers and experienced artist would rather see how your got your finished piece then just your finished piece. You will also find more people appreciate anatomy studies then fanart... because anatomy studies actually take some thinking. In the end, think a little more before you post hurtful comments on other peoples threads…because one of your “art-gods” just may notice it and let you in on exactly how good your stuff is.

allrightie then, here we go...if i wanted to be original, i would start do draw my own things, characters, enviroments....(which i do but that isnt the issue here)...this post i've dedicated only for drawings of blizz characters, so that excludes teh originality your talkin bout (im drawing from the game...duh)
furthermore, the screenshot tracing your talkin bout...dude, my absolute goal was to make my drawings the most similar to the actual game as it can get. my goal was for people who see my drawings to think "look, this actually might be something i can see / doo with my char"...the way i figure these drawins is to take like 10 different screenshots, even maybe take a short movie of a char im workin on, OBSERVE how they behave ingame... then i draw perhaps 4-5 different sketches and develop the one that seems the most natural and in-game lookalike...
nevertheless, if you're really yearning for originality, this last drawing was an idea i thought of earlier, all the characters i drew by my memory (i already happen to have quite an understanding of blizz's anatomy by now...). as for the dragon, if you're a player like you claim you are, you can see that it isnt onyxia, azuregos, nefarian or anything i might have screenshoted....how i did the sketch for him was to watch an old movie of our guild killin onyxia so i could know how her body reacts etc. and then invent the head....
as mentioned before, i draw like 5-6 f.cked up sketches before i'm onto the real work, and if you trully want to see some invented brand new ideas that have some further conncetion to wow, go look and drool at that japanese anime pictures people (and even some artists workin on TCG) draw, cause mate, this thread isnt the place for you...
oooh and bout that "thought and development"...dude, check thread before saying something like "potential employers and experienced artist would rather see how you got your finished piece then just your finished piece"...just because of comments like that, lots of times i've filmed myself draw these pictures, well, bunch of the movies ended up in recycle bin as well as the drawings, but i've kept the ones that lead to the pictures posted on this forum....and have put the links to youtube so you can actually see "how i got to my finished piece"
considering the comment on jc066's thread, i'm really glad you've put its url in your comment, as people can see how it was completely in place... dude there are feckin loads of threads on this forum with 2-min sketches that the artists are, i dunno, too lazy to develop...even if they have a slightest issue bout their sketch, instead of correcting or even redoing it they come flashing here asking for help and beggin people to c&c something that doesnt really have a contour yet....come on...
and finally, as for the anatomy in my drawings, dude, you might not wanna preech me bout it....im not gonna say anything bout my anatomy knowlage. its really not worth it... just to note...if i wanted the characters in my drawings to look like real people, id make them that way, i wouldnt bleed my eyes learning and understanding blizzards anatomy (radius-ulna, tibia-fibula the same size, lack of sternal bone, acromion scapulae pointing out of undead's shoulder, wtf?)...
thats bout it my dear punkyboy...
kkthxbye now..
