thing is i want a tablet yet i could only get a cheapy A4 one which i've seen around amazon, NOT wacom. being only 13 i don't really have the money to dish out on stuff like this, therefore i'm wondering if it is worth doshing out the cash for one of these cheaper ones. the reviews seem good but i want some proffesional opinions.

never heard a professional say anything other than wacom... that doesn't mean something else isn't out there but I'd be skeptical.
Buying a $90 graphire wacom shouldn't be that big of an issue

Having a quality software product like painter or photoshop means very little without the tablet tho.
Best,
Jason.

Well, since you're only 13, you would be better off practicing with pencil and paper than anything else.

You're 13...you haven't been at ANYTHING a long time. ;) I have to agree with HunterKiller that if you can't work to pay for the tools you want, then perhaps you should study more with the ones you DO have. Do you really understand the difference in drawing with pencil, vs digital? Just having a tablet does not suddenly make you a better artist. I've had a tablet for yrs, but I still "scan things in." You are not missing as much as you think in terms of being a better draftsman.
Anyway, I think a "cheapy" pen & tablet set will work about as well as a mouse on sensitivity, and not last as long.

As somebody going from a graphire 4x6 to a no name CompUSA brand 10x14 then back to an Inutous 3 6x8.
Trust me on this there's a very VERY big difference, thing is I don't think it'll matter, why not try ebay or buy refurbished from wacom themselves?

I'll have to say that it doesn't matter...tools are tools. Some people paint directly on computer without scanning anything. If he had a pad at 13, he would be skilled at digital painting by the time he graduate from high school.
Tydal, the koala pad was a joke...sorry. That thing is a lot older than you. ;)

It's just a tool.
Price and brand don't matter here much, unless you're doing good money on your art. I, too, have been quite obsessed with getting meself a Wacom and frowning at any other brand out there, but recently I've came to realize that you can draw as good with a crappy Genius. Sure, sometimes the pressure mechanics is a bit off, and the circles are not always perfect if you draw outside Painter (Painter makes even Genius-produced circles perfect), but really, ask yourself - how often do you need PERFECT geometrical figures in your drawings? I don't.
Technologically, Genius MousePen 8x6" is not much behind WACOM Graphire, the only major shortcoming is the actual build of the thing -- probably the assembly line is a bit dated and they try to churn out a lot of tablets in little time so the quality of the pressure-system is not very good. But overall it does the trick.
So don't worry about the brand, just take whichever you can afford and do your shit. When you get some extra cash, go for WACOM.

hehe thanks guys, sorry for the late reply. there was some really good advice there. yet may i just say, try and not judge people by their age over their art, i doubt some of you have ever seen it (not that it's good, but still :P) and i can get better ON the tablet aswell as using pencil. anyway, i'll think i'll wait a while, but maybe when i gather the money i can look into it ;) as atro said, doesn't neccaserily have to be wacom :)
