With sharp defined line art like that it can be a good idea to keep the color edges sharp or they will not show in relation to the sharp line art. You can do one end of a gradiation sharp and the other soft/gradual and get the 'best of both worlds'. If both ends of the gradiations are soft you might end up with a blotchy look or values that doesn't show. I think you're doing rather good though. I like the skintone.
