I'm finally doing something that I want to do, and the art director is yours truly. I'm going to do a bunch of sketches of Conan. the way I see him. I know it's not original, but I'm a big fan of the R.E. Howard stuff and I feel compelled. Also It's tied to another project that I'm doing with some buddies. I'll talk about that more later. For now here are some sketches.
Here's two so far. The fight scene is half ball point and half Photoshop. I think it's way too Frazetta-ish, so this one will get scrapped, it was a fun exercise anyway. THe second one is all ballpoint pen. For those of you that have never tried Ballpoint pen as a sketch medium, do yourself a favor and give it a whirl. PLus If your hands hurt like hell like mine do after drawing for 20hrs a day, a ballpoint pen is really smooth , feels nice.

This looks cool. I love the feel of it. The only thing that bothers me a little is that he has no eyes. Everything else looks sweet. ;)

Dude, you really nailed him with that second one. Crazy how soft you can get with that ballpoint, very nice.

Somtimes I think you listen beside Led Zeppelin to Manowar or have the Saxon´s "Crusader" in the shelf when I look at your drawings :).
BTW the second one comes out really nice - I never was content with the Marvel-type Conan ... I would like to see more of your interpretations-

That 2nd sketch is GOLD. Really good sense of mood, and the posture is flawless. I've always been a fan of your work, mcotie.
Nice to see you having fun with this. I'll check back a lot for updates. :)

thanks guys i'm glad you like em. I am still doing that other commission, but sometimes you just gotta do whatcha gotta do.
Fipse, I know what you mean. I really liked The Comic stuff too, when the right artists drew em. but I knew it wasn't the book yano? The movies and the tv show really pissed me off though.

Yep, I can understand you. I read some of Howards books and they were really good stuff. But I think later some epigones (afaik incl. Terry Brooks, whom I really dislike) chewed on this bones ... The same with comics, there are some good ones, but a lot generic stuff. Has Richard Corben ever tried Conan? This should be interesting ;).

i think his head is too big in the last pic. i also think the first sketch is more dynamic and would be a cooler painting.

Thanks guys.
Fipse I do believe Corben did some Conan stuff back in the early 80's I'll have to check with some guys that I work with. It would be cool though.
I agree the head was too big. these next 2 progressions show the corrections and additions. thnx.

Sweet stuff as always. I have to agree with tyboogie about the head being too big and I'll have to agree with you about the ball point pen sketching, it isn't used enough and its such a great way to draw.

Heh, I was about to suggest that you make his face looking upwards, and as I scrolled down, you did it anyways.
Your colors are looking better and better. Perhaps play with some colored lighting for some dramatic effects. Very nice work, man.
