These are actually two vastly different programs. Photoshop is a raster program while Illustrator is vector. With a raster graphic, the image is made up of tiny little dots called pixels. With vector, the image is made up of primatives such as points, lines and polygons created by equations to make an image. Does that make sense?

Photoshop vs. Illustrator is like forks vs. spoons.

to actually answer your question...
illustrator is geared to handle layouts and images for print. i use it for t-shirt designs, logos, web stuff, etc. (images that have to be perfect for print, in other words vector). creating with it is very, very different from ps, but its worth mastering.

Oh that is a good way to put it. They are both part of Adobe's Creative Suite. They are meant to work together and compliment each other. Obviously it would be silly for Adobe to sell this big, expensive software package with redundent programs. Illustrator is excellent for graphic design, logos, type and page layouts. Meanwhile, Photoshop, since it is a raster graphics program, can be used for digital painting.

If you want a good example of another really good vector based graphics program is Flash. Also, programs like Maya and other 3-D programs are vector graphics but with more complex equations (I believe, someone can correct me if I am wrong here, I could be confused).

HORRAY! I AM NOT JUST TALKING OUT OF MY BUM!

I just wanted to make VERY clear the difference between raster and vector. Heck, I have a fair amount of experience with 2-D vector programs and Maya makes my head hurt!

Anyways, I hope all this really helps beat down the point of the major difference between Photoshop and Illustrator. I kinda feel like the horse is dead and we should just let it lay in piece!

psd and AI are both from adobe, psd is for image editing, that means photoretouch, montage, light, saturation, etc, illustrator is a vector illustration program.
