Hey guys. I'm looking to possibly move to New York near the end of August, and I need to do some research about housing in case that's where I end up going this fall. The school I would be going to is in Manhattan, but I think it'd be pretty impossible to live in Manhattan since it's so much $$$. So does anyone have some good info on the Bronx or Brooklyn and just apartments and apartment hunting in New York City in general? Or does anybody have any friends / acquaintences that live there who'd have some tips? Thanks guys.

if you go to craiglist.com they have some apartments i think I live in the bronx and i'm going to parsons. If you want to live in the bronx nice areas are pelham parkway, williamsbridgeroad, pelham bay and morris park there are some other areas but these are the ones that came up in my head at this moment.

Thanks midnite and ty. craigslist is a good ref, so many listings. The place I'd go to wouldn't have housing/dorms, so that's why I'd have to find an apt. How much are the places you guys rent a month if you don't mind me asking? Yeah, those shares seemed more affordable, I can see how they'd go faster.

well depending on your budget youll be able to get a nicer place that is closer to the city. compare the prices and the areas with the sizes of teh rooms. i would try to get a place in willamsburg bk, or astoria queens. teh commute into teh city is really quick and easy

I'd say try Jersey. If you end up in a location with good mass transit the commute is easy. I used to take a bus from Clifton, New Jersey to the Port Authority and walk 15 blocks to work, all in about 50 minutes. If you live in Queens you might end up spendig almost as much time on a subway and walking, and you'll probably hate where you live. I haven't met alot of people living in Queens that really liked it. :)

Don't know much about the Bronx..

And of course, forget about living in Manhattan. Even if you find a not-too-expensive place, it'll be about the size of a closet.

I've had a couple jobs in the city and I'm still living in Jersey, and I'd never consider moving into the city. The big deal-breakers for me are: it wouldn't make much difference with the commute, it's too expensive, and you can't have a car.

I actually live in Queens...and really wouldn't want to live anywhere else...

It's relatively quiet, and about 15 mins from the City...

Astoria, Long ISland City, and Sunnyside Queens would be good places to check out...

Thanks a lot guys, all great tips. You've given me a lot of stuff to look through. Hopefully I'll know this week or even next about moving out there for sure or not. Last night I had a dream about my future apartment that I woke up one day and had cockroaches everywhere. I guess all the roach stories decided to get me in my sleep.
