[ ...PRESSURE, ACIDITY, ETC... ]
[ You decide what it helps one cope with. ]
[ The main point is to think about how (space)suits will diverge from our current looks, not depending just on advances in materials and technologies... ]
[ ...But, moreso with regard to the sort of environmental hostility in which the wearer must be able to function. ]
[ So, the suit needed to shield one from the vacuum of space, micro-projectiles, super-fine dust and cosmic rays... ]
[ ...will not likely look the same as a suit needed to wade through sulfuric acid streams, muffle sonic shockwaves, and endure frozen hydrogen sand storms. ]
[ So... ]
[ Make a suit that knows what it's up against. ]
[ ;) ]

goran- that sketch is great, what have you used to draw it? Looks like markers and graphite... but what do you use for highlights?

hi!
this is my first post here. I'm more of a programmer than an artist, but I do love to doodle so I figure some practice will improve my skill. I bought myself a tablet and I'm trying to put it to use.I never used anything other than pencils or pens... I hope You don't mind I plan to use this forum as motivation for daily work.
I'm amazed by what people around here can achieve digitally and I hope to learn from You!
anyways this is a semidetached suit protecting from rain and flies.

Still can't get to my tablet pen, so here's a pencil render of a Desert/Sand Suit:
Light-weight tight suit held together with mesh for comfort in hot weather and ease of movement; mesh also protects any skin that would have been exposed
Mask for direct oxygen flow in sandstorms (pipes connect to tank on back not seen here)
Thin, tinted visor protects against sun's rays
Flat shoes to spread out weight on sand
Cloth (neck, head, waist) for additional sand protection

Everyone's stuff looks incredible so far! I especially like goran's style and the atmosphere that Mitze acheived =D

Zeldalady: nice outfit, realy thought this one out.
Goran: i guess this notebook has lots of interesting sketches.
Mitze: weird suit, great admosphere again!
BurntUmber: cool suit but 80 layers, i get confused when i have more then 20 layers.

So the idea was that you have to wear this suit when eating with this alien... maybe he releases some kind dangerous gas when he eats... lol. I dunno...
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c289/SantaClaus310/casual_suite.jpg
Tommoy-nice angle. cool classic robot feel, if it had super bright colors I could see it as one of those japanese toy robots.
zeldalady-really cool design. its to my taste.
gzy-interesting idea. I feel like her cloths should be someone futuristic like the suit.
JIVA*SOUL-that is a crazy suit. I like the concept. out of the box. so what is the suit made out of?
futureprobe- really awesome design.
dharma suit-great idea
casketry-nice shapes in here. I like the direction. I kinda see a giant mech bird wrapped around her.
Mitze- just really cool. odd in a good way. got my attention.
invinciblewombat-nice idea. I feel like cameras might have had some advances in the future.
Goran-cool mech suit. nice heavy feel.
BurntUmber. real cool. I feel like a little reflected light from the ground or something might give it even more demensionality.
eblu-cool battle suit. looks very dynamic. would be cool to get some other colors and designs in there.

Zelda lady I hope you dont mind I had a quick starting stab at colouring your sketch. It just reminded me so much of my favourite sci-fi universe of DUNE.
Finished it. I'm totally going to do some fremen stil suit designs now

BurntUmber: no worries as long as credit is given and all that jazz (which it is!)--I'm just really flattered that you would try coloring it! =D I really love the detail you've already managed to acheive on the face--would you mind if I asked how you got such nice battered metal textures??
Tommoy:as was said, awesome classic design, I like the colors
SantaClaus: I like the painting itself, and that's a great original idea overall--I'll be sure to steer clear of having meals with that particular species ;D

Sure thing. I colour it in black and white with tiny smooth brushes. Then I put a blank layer over the top and select the ' overlay ' option. then I use the following brushes ( all PS standard ) to first give it a dirty gold colour. Then I use another blank overlay layer and use pure white to pick up the highlights.

SantaClaus > Thanks, man :) Love the light in yours.
BurntUmber > Hehe, my first reference as well. Long live the visions of Frank Herbert. Like your colouring, btw, in both pieces.
Mitze > That´s just amazing. I could hang that on my wall straight away. Especially like the background with the elegant space ship. Really nice design. (saw that you changed it a bit now ... Still very nice but I almost liked the first version better. More moody with the greenish lights)
Really great work from everybody else too. This is indeed very inspiring!

I was thinking of a pressure suit, so I kind of went with a deepsea looking thing. But I wanted to play around with trying to make a paintery, so that took up most of the time.

i enjoyed this one - although i was uninspired and flat at the start.
this is a high wind/atmosphere suit. lots of computer controlled little fins which constantly update to create stasis in the motion of the user, and can redirect energy to create propulsion providing the wind is strong enough and continuous. For use in alien atmospheres with intense weather conditions.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/chrissdawaller/dsg1223-f.jpg
also my first try with painter, but i bailed halfway through as it wasn't accurate as I like it. I am detemined to find the way with painter though, i'm starting to get more confy with it... slowly. :)

Yeah so this is the second time in a row I did a piece only to re-read the subject and find the meaning was different than the original. The first time being the underwater crawler.
After reading the topic again, I realize that creatures aren't exactly an enviromental hazard (haha - whoops!) und so I fail. This was the first time I had tried to do a black and white however, so I am going to post it anyway.
I also realized that painting camouflage is actually a bit of a problem, because in painting, you try to draw the viewers eye to the subject, and in camouflage you try to draw the viewers eye elsewhere. It is a bit conflicting haha.
I figure that doing black and whites will help me learn to do values correctly, so I think I may start doing black and whites for awhile.
Anyways, this suit is made to protect against any creatures that you might find in the open on an unknown planet. It uses squares like the US millitary currently does, and so you must assume that they are right in thier current understanding that sqares disguise better than curves.

hope this isn't too late. my first dsg :}
the suit's sub-sectioning makes it flexible for working in and the white surface reflects sunlight. its large tinted visor helps the spaceman spot danger, even in his peripheral vision. the helmet also comes equipped with twin air filters to keep him breathing. and it's a good idea to carry a blaster in any hostile environment.

wow, this was a fun activity. I had a lot of fun. thanks for the compliments. I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up (being a noob and all.) I'm glad it's not as brutal as I thought it would be. I'm amazed at everyones skill. . . It's awesome to see how many different directions it went it.

Nice variety this topic! Always love to see a bunch of different takes.
http://venimarolka.com/dump/040307-heatsuit.jpg
Doing one for heat...air is cooled and pumped through the pouches covering the body. Outside has a mirror finish to reflect the sun. Not sure how it would get rid of waste heat though...it would probably accumulate heat until the system failed or things start melting or the user spontaneously combusts. Or something equally funny.
