Nice studies! I like those fatties ;) The guy with the helmet (roman/greek style) seems to have a very small head. Remeber that in most comics it better to exaggerate than minimize. Don't get me wrong, you're good (much better than me). I think that if you push yourself to draw regulary you'll have a chance to work within the 'biz :)

If you don't already, try mirroring your images every once in a while. There is some wonkiness every once in a while and such could be easily spotted that way.

i would really like to see some lineweight. Your quality is getting better, the lines are much less scribbly. But add some different thickeness to your lines, aka where shadows are, lighten or omit lines where light would hit. Add more thickness to lines in the foreground (front leg) and loosen up/lighten up on the rear leg. It will dramitally increase the depth of your drawings. Last but not least, add some contrast....dark value against light value will give you much more depth and realism. It would really help you to study from real life or even photos. Do a long rendering of something and try to match every value.

I know im being hard, i like the effort and the ideas, just do a few studies here and there and you will see a huge improvement. drawing more = better. its not magic :). Goodluck and keep it up

Hey, some cool heads:) My favorite is the second one (from above), you got the perspective very good and it has an evil touch. Looks like the perfect head for a villain;)
The head under it with the profile view looks good too.
The other heads have some problems and are a bit off. Be careful and focus more on the construction lines so this is no big deal.
Oh and this head on the very left side in the middle looks cool too.
This captain america guy would look funny with colors!:)
Keep it up and I'm looking forward to our next topic!

Hey Atlantik, glad you liked my SB, just stopping by to say thanks and check your stuff out.
Overall I like what you got going here, nice and clean! Watch out for features slipping around your faces though, I notice your 3/4 views have noses and far eyes that aren't in the right place. Also I think someone else mentioned it, but some stuff seems kinda stiff. I don't know if you use a lightbox at the moment, but drawing very loosely and messily then lightboxing over it really injects some life into your drawings.

no problem... All of wacoms tablets do have the pressure sensitivity options but you have to go manually turn them on in whatever program you are working in.

I heard it can be a real pain to find if you are using photoshop elements.

If you aren't using elements this is a great tutorial. it teaches how to turn on pressure sensitivity and has some tips for brush settings-

Hey, you're coming along! Watch the size of your heads, they are noticeably too small. Good try with the watercolours, they are a hard medium to work with because they tend to go very murky very quickly! Keep studying and practicing, and thanks for visiting my sketchbook mate!

Windmaker

Hey:) Nice stuff you have. Drawing gestures is very good practice. But what comes out at me is that they don't look very gestural. In gesture drawing you're supposed to draw as fast as you can. It looks like you've restated some lines numerous times. The essence of gesture drawing is not so much in accuracy, but conveying the motion and mood of the figure in as short a time as possible. Try to go with a more loose and flowing line and try changing the lineweight a bit.
And, as monstertree said, watch the size of the heads.
The landscape painting looks like an initial colour lay-in. It's a good start:) If you want to push it further, try increasing the contrast in the foreground.
Good luck!:)

Craig Houghton
August 1st, 2007, 09:00 PM
I'm glad to see you working with the watercolors. Here's my starter tips: Have fun with the color, don't be afraid to use a blow-dryer (I blow-dry very, very often), always use good paper (and tape it down), and use a bigger brush than you think you should use.

I think landscapes are tough until you're used to them. They have their own rules. In general, I try to think of them in terms of layered zones or planes. Keep the distance in low contrast (edges are ok, just keep the value contrast subtle). Atmospheric perspective is crucial when portraying a deep landscape. Be sure to play up the light and the shadows in the mid-ground and especially the foreground. And, be careful when working from reference because one usually needs to change things around a bit -- don't let your major shapes become too uniform. Also, when working from a color reference it's very useful to look at it in b&w to check your values. If you're not used to working with color, the hue and intensity can be very distracting. For this reason I put a digital camera in b&w mode and look at my own work in the viewfinder, without snapping the photo. I just look through the view-finder. If your composition is good and you nail the values, you're 90% there.

Regarding this landscape in particular, I like the cool colors with limited use of warms and he way you handled the distant mountains. Remember to keep control of each brushstroke in the foreground. You want to avoid a marker-line effect, but I know that can come from using the wrong sort of paper.

I'm looking forward to more!

-Craig

Hello:)
The colouring is good:)
But what jumps out at me is the curve of her left arm (our right). The side closer to the body should curve the opposite way, when it gets near the shoulder. Right now it gets too narrow at the shoulder and it looks like a... doll's arm. Like it's just been stuck there. Although this convergence of lines at shoulder could just be because of the seams on the jacket...
And another thing - her head is lit from the left, while her body receives light from the right.
Hope you don't mind the critique:)
Keep having fun now:)

LOL!! You silly billy Atlantik, posting replies in ya own thread, what are ya like?? :teeth:

Hehehe...anyway seriously now, I like that last post. The simple colours work well. I would get rid of that shadow beneath her feet though, looks too black...maybe a gray would work better? I agree that her feet could do with altering slightly too. :)

Hello:) Nice updates!
I've already wrote to you about the missing shadow on the little girl's boots:) Other than that, she looks really cool!
As for the sketches - they're also nice. You should just try to vary the lineweight more. It will make them more dynamic.
Good luck and keep having fun:)

I think the photoshop practice is really paying off. The girl with the boots and the butterflies shows good progress and looks great. As a crit I'd look out for backgrounds with vivid colors that you don't find in the main subject -- it may help to look for background colors that bring harmony to the foreground to make the piece work as a whole.

I think the blueline is working well for you since those demonic sketches look great. In each of the cases you made the perspective work for you, and that's a good thing. btw the teleport belly button is hilarious.

Hey:) Good to see you posting, I see a progress but here are sume suggestions for the last picture: Before you begin with coloring checkt out the anatomy, it has still a lot of weak points. It's the hardest thing so keep an eye on it. If you got it you should decide: Do I want to color my lineart with or do I want to paint? In the moment your picture is between those two worlds. For Lineart the lines should be absoloutely clean for a painting you don't have to care so much about them but be shure that you don't see them through the paint anymore because it often looks kind of dirty and unfinished.
When you paint be careful with colors, in the moment the green and yellow is very strong and looks really unnatural. Try some lighter colors first or use strong colors for the whole picture. Be careful with set acours.
Another point a re the textures. They don't really fit in the painting, the dagger looks not connected to the rest of the picture, a kind of cut out look.
The flur on his boots looks too detailed compared to the rest of the painting, use some bigger shapes here and don't paint every little hair.
Try to use less grey and put some warm colors here and there, think about the background again and the bubble effect on his weapon, it could need a bit more work. In the moment one can see all the brushstrokes which could be a good effect if it would have a cool texture but it looks too much like the normal round photoshop brush IMO. A good point in the picture is the face, you blended the colors well and got some nice shapes.
Try to use the same technique for the rest of the picture. I hope that wasn't too hard because I crit so much. Never forget the fun while drawing, that's the most important, put all the creativity and thoguhts in your pictures and you'll find your way. Just keep it up and practice practice practice:)
Can't wait to see some new stuff!

PS: This pixel animatioon is really cool!

Hi im here to return the love! I have been scrolling through your SB and Its a good start. Since march you improved alot and thats the way it should be. :)
I find that proportions and anatomy is something everyone need to work hard with so that is the #1 Composition is something thats not that importent in the beginning but its good to work with at the same time as anatomy. One exercise I like is to draw a square and then try and fit a figure nicely inside the frame. Its hard in the begining, at least it was for me, but it will help you a lot. I now use papers more efficiently. Poses comes with Figure drawing so just draw lots and lots of figures and take your time with them, and I dont mean with details, I mean take time and look at proportions and balancepoint. These are all basic tibs and you probably heard it millions of times but its always good with a reminder right! And when you lose patience with yourself and think about stoping for the day just take your left hand and draw your right. That is if your righthanded otherwise take your right hand and draw your left. You get the point. Its a great exercise for your eye, Its not gonna be your best drawn hand. :) but its helps.
Im gonna stop for now. Let me know if you get more anoyed than you feel it helps! :D
I like your SB and you seem to have the drive.
Mahalo!

Nice set of studies you did! Now do a hundred more pages!

I also like the golem. You're trying out new things and being brave about it. Good work! You should deepen the contrast however. Desaturate it to see what I mean. Right now it's being lit both from above and below by lightsources with the same intensity. Make one light brighter and subdue the other one. I think this'll help.

It's great to see you doing studies! Keep it up!:)

The head of the standing woman in the top page is a bit small . Also, try to soften the contour around your drawings. It's not as rigid as it was before, but still, try to avoid doing uniform outlines around the drawings. It flattens them out.
Also the lady next to the portrait on the bottom page came out pretty good. Well done!

Keep on having fun and drawing:)

Hello, thanks for taking time to check out my sketchbook. :) The handmade sketchbook I made with Arches fine drawing paper. I took a book binding class during art school as an elective, so I learned how to make many types of books. You could probably look up how to bind your own sketchbook online... once you learn how to do it, it's quite easy. :)

You're improving in your drawing skills. Keep drawing from life and pay attention to proportions. You might also want to set up a still life at home to practice value and color. You will learn it if you practice!

Keep it up! :)

Hiya! :)
This is an exercise an old teacher gave me and later Ive heard of it from a lot of different people. One famus MARKO shows it on his massive black DVD.
(This aply when working with pencils on paper, if you draw digitaly youll never have any trouble of this sort. Meaning, you can always fix it without erasing) And yes, I know its strange I did this example digital...:bashful:

http://www.b-manart.com/bilder2/exercise.jpg

1. Put a blank paper infront of you
2. Draw a square
3. Try to fit the character/object you draw into the square, It
desnt matter if itgets a bit out of the square but as long as you
dont run out of paper.
4. Shows how you sometimes end up when you dont think of your layout and sizing of drawing.

Try drawing a lot of squares on a paper and fit figure drawings into them. Its hard in the begining. :) Hope this is helpful.

Hello:) Nice update! I really like the marker stuff.
And the pencils are getting better. But, one thing if I may - stop outlining everything. It flattens out the form. Your looser sketches, the ones you probably hadn't gotten around to finishing look much better than the finished ones, in my opinion. They've got lineweight variation, the finished ones lack.
Other than that - good work! Keep drawing and doing studies!:) And have fun with it:)

Oh one more thing. When I look closer on the small guy in rabit-suit. it looks like you used the fil funktion in the lineart. There is some white left at some edges. You can try and put the lineart in its own layer set to multiply (The lineart layer need to be the top layer) You can paint in a nother layer beneath it. :)
A nother way to do it in Photoshop is to make a copy of the blue channel and inverting it by pressing Ctrl+I Then you erase everything on screen and open a new layer. then scroll the selection bar till you find Load selection and there you can find the lineart its called "blue copy" probably. THen just use the fill bucket and black and there you go lineart without white background. you can now paint in the layer beneath the lineart. Hope thius is helpful. :)
Cheers!

with the watercolor from back in december, remember to look for colors in the shadows. It's especially important in watercolor when using the same color, only more strongly, in the shadows can end up increasing the intensity/chroma and drawing unwanted attention to that area.

I love all the studies (so many!) and I think you did a great job with the pastels. The texture and color diversity on the birds nest really works.

cool shirts btw - very cool

the evil hatter is rather badass. I could be wrong about it, but you might want to force yourself to do more 3/4 portrait views. i see a tendency to stick to face-forward and pure profile drawings.

good call on changing the panda's background. you have a good eye for what works.

as always, keep it up!

Hey:)
You're getting better and better! I really like the quick figure sketches.
Just keep doing your studies!
My advice is to also study the skeletal structure a bit. That way you'll learn to avoid mistakes like on the woman's face in the last picture you posted. Her skull looks like it's shattered now. Notice how the nose doesn't start right next to the eye as you've painted it. Actually in most people the bridge of the nose (the part between the eyes) is the narrowest part of it. Look how you've put a shadow between the left eye (our right) and the nose. You should do the same for the other eye. Also her right cheek looks way too flat and pushed too far back. Again, you've made it better at the other side:)
Do a couple of skull studies to gain a better understanding of the underlying forms of the face. It'll really help.
Good luck!:) And have fun:)

Hi. Nice studies you got there. Your progress looks promising, but I think you should loose the comic-ish style you have on some figures, like the guy with the jacket and hat in your first post on this page. The crotch area of his trousers. The way the folds go is very simplified and I think that comes from copying the style of comics but without the understanding needed to simplify it the right way...

moooooooooooooooooooooooore reffed studies please!

focus on values and edges! If you work at a low res 72 ppi at ~800x800 pixels, then you're going to end up with fuzzy edges. A cheat to working low res is to use filter>unsharp mask. It's usually best to work at a larger size, and then when you save your jpg, save it as a smaller size. Usually gives you better edges.

Windmaker
March 29th, 2008, 03:19 PM
Hey:)
I already told you the frog is awesome:)
Apart from that - what Texahol is saying is true. And unsharp mask is the ultimate filter!:)
I like the expression of the character in the last picture:) You really managed to convey a sense of surprise. Good job! But the lighting is a bit messed up. I can't really tell where the light is coming from because there are equally light and equally dark parts all over the picture. The left eye (his right) seems to be infront of his skull instead of inside it. When you paint things like that block in the big forms first, then the small ones - meaning you should first show that the head has an egg-like shape, then show that the nose protrudes from it and the eye sockets go back into it. Then put the eyes in and shade them accordingly knowing that one is on the shaded side of the face and sits in a socket which makes even more shadow over it. Keep those things in mind:)

Now draw more studies! And show them here:) And keep having fun with all that:)

Hey:) Good job! You're improving steadily.
You should draw the eyes though:)
Now, about the latest study - it's good shading practice, but the construction isn't really good. I think you should focus more on understanding the skull when drawing faces. The face is skewed at the moment and the mouth is pushed too much to the side. I don't know if you use them, but I'll say it anyway - use construction lines. Define the positions of the face's major landmarks before putting in any details. Then always check to see if you're still following these guidelines.
Also, I think you should focus on linedrawings now. It'll help you clear up the construction issues much faster. Try to make a line only copy of the photo you've used as a reference. See what happens. It'll take a lot less time and that way you'll be able to do a lot more studies and thus - learn more. This doesn't mean you should stop using Photoshop and values, but I believe you would benefit if you focus on linedrawing and understanding construction.
When you're drawing a hand, or a face, or whatever, always think about its three dimensional shape. So when you draw a face a put in the centerline think about how it goes around the form in 3D. You'd be surprised how much easier things get once you get used to this.
And lastly - measure. Compare the distances between major landmarks in the subject you're drawing and in your drawing.
Anyway - as I've said you're progressing really good so, just draw a lot and have fun:)

Ok,there is something wrong about your giant with the big bone...there is no bounced light from the body into the arms and from the arms or the ambiento into the body, thats why his arms blend into the background, which is not correct!

Keep posting,man!!

Windmaker
May 2nd, 2008, 01:52 PM
Hey:)
I'm impressed again! Good work! As monstertree pointed out, the improvement is noticeable.
About the caveman - one thing that's bugging me is the club being behind the loincloth. Not that it's not possible, but it doesn't make much sense for him to be holding the club between his legs instead of in front of them. Also, what Camara says is true - try to separate the figure from the background. Bounced light is a good idea. It really makes things pop out. Just do what you did with the lower part of the legs. BTW I love how you've rendered the hand with the club. Really nice!
Give some attention to the toes too. Right now the feet look cut off. Either that or it looks like he has hooves. Also - put some shadows cast from the "necklace". It'll help integrate it with the rest of the picture.
And lastly, try to be more consistent with the light source. I can't determine where the light is coming from now. Of course, it could just be me being stupid:)
Aaalsoo... the grumpy sheriff is great! :)

I'm really proud of your progress over the past few months. Keep doing studies and remember to use loose flowing lines. And just have fun with it:)

Hi there!
Im all good, slacking to much, but theres a cure! :yayca:
Hope all is well and everythng!
So first, Is that black you used when shading the Oger with thw bone? Its a rookie mistake to shade with black. Look at things in your room. what color does everything get its color from? Put a red pencil on a white paper, what color does the shadow have? Slightly red.
Second look. Look at lighting. The lighting on the legs sugest a quite sharp light from both sides while on the torso the light comes from front and a bit above. The lighting on the neck puts light from behind him. I gets a bit messy and it would have a better mood and a more professional feel if you thought of this first.
Try to pin out the light source in the walue sketch, it helps bring out the shapes and set the mood.
Keep working mate!
Cheers!

while the colors are lokking a bit more lively in this new beginning, you haven't picked a single lightsource to render from. You're losing all of your "big shapes" from this. Think BIG then go small. Right now as it is, you're rendering each feature of the head independently, with it's own independent light source. Something that might help, is draw a dot or an arrow, or a sphere on your page to choose your lightsource, and have a visual reference.

I think doing more value studies would really help you out :) Value is 2/3 of color :P

keep up those studies mate. Hopefully soon you can do some really long studies ;)
it's also helpful to do studies in greyscale from color, as it really helps you to see the values better. Once values become easier to see, you can spend more time thinking about the hue.

Don't forget to think about edges when doing drawings. Hard edges and soft edges help show form :) soft edges where the form rolls, hard edges where two planes meet :)
