My two latest personal pieces. Been doing way too much work stuff lately, felt good to get some kind of release with these pictures! Hope you like them.

EDIT:

I think they are technically beautiful and not deep psychologically... Just some pretty young women, I have no idea about their individuality, because they are too general IMO.
brushwork is lovely though.

Cheers you guys!

The brushes used here are all out-of-the-box from Painter IX, and with some additional detail work in Photoshop. I don't innovate much when it comes to brushes :) No texture overlays for these.

I actually tried to keep the usual brushwork-indulgence to a minimum here so they wouldn't get in the way of the subject, will probably try and go the other way next time round!

Glad you guys are liking the tutorials as well :)

Thanks

Gah...wonderful. One thing that always stood out about your work is the ability to make colors vibrate. All most impressionistic on a micro scale.

Hi there! First time I see that mon-avatar since I first set foot in this forum...

I like the second one a lot more. The technique is flawless, as always, in both of them. But the first one reminds me too much of those sleezy covers on pulp romance books (written for bored uneducated single mothers) that you come across in konsum-affärer.... ;), only the muscular guy is cropped out of it... (something about the colour and the pose...)

Anyhow, I hope all is well.

/Cheers! (I finally have a broadband connection... yes, once more I'm a contemporary citizen... and a new gallery for fantasy-stuff at deviant... which hopefully will fill up with some more serious stuff in the year to come.)

Great stuff as usual. I dig the new ones. I always love your dynamic, rhythmic brushwork. Makes me think of Richard Schmid. I love how it sneaks out to sculpt a form here and there like a sculptor's rake. I see what looks like a flat brush a lot in your work (meaning like a traditional flat). How are you controlling the angle? Are you actually tilting your pen or do u have one of those fancy 6d art pens. Or is that in PS? Thanks for posting.

Fantastic!
My favorite is the one with the woman looking at the wall with the "pre historic" figures. Just beautiful!
I would like to see some work in progress if possible.

Mon
May 12th, 2007, 04:29 AM
Thanks for your comments, everyone!

abo, you're right, I use lots of flat brushes in Painter with stylus tilt controlling the angle. Never got that 6d art pen working properly (have one at work), and the sucker doesn't have any buttons on it! Don't know what they were thinking there..

JoaoCaetano, sure thing:

This was pretty early on before i knew what to with this piece. I actually considered going craig mullins baroque before i settled for Jeff Jones primitivism :)

dream_sear, That's Painter IX and some photoshop

Cheers :)

Hi Mattias,

Great to see these new pieces. Your work just seems to get stronger and stronger.

I just love the variety of marks and approaches you seem to bring to your painting. Some of the nuance in there is gorgeous.

It is always a pleasure to see.

cheers,

Ralph

holy shit man, these are some beautiful paintings. You've done a great job of keeping the painting fresh from sketch to finish... that is not an easy task.. thank you very much for posting them, and i am really glad to see the work in progress.

I fucking love the drapery, there are so many nice shapes there... nothin but love here. I'd love to see more!

I really really love your indulgence brushwork. I usually like to keep brushwork on my traditional painting too. next time I will try that on my digital painting as well.^^

Beautiful portraits. I love the lightness of the strokes used and the colours sit so well together, they have an almost dreamlike quality to them as does most of your work I've seen so far. Your personal work is so different to the stuff you do for work, i really like it!

Keep posting when you get the chance!! :)

Love the first one--the colors and the composition reminds of classic American illustrators from the 50's.

the last one--I know what you're trying to do with the off-balance composition, but I'm not sure if it works. Sometimes a standard center composition simply works because it's so iconic and forceful?
