Plate

Congrats to Evil_Sloth and Sketcheth for winning challenge #25 with a tie! Good job, guys.

And special thanks to Narmo for covering for me while I was away to deal with a death in the family. Much appreciated.

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Character: The Ogre Slayer
Less vague than the preovious topic, as requested. The ogre slayer is a character who has gained a reputation for saving terrorized towns by hunting and exterminating the large, violent, disruptive creatures known as ogres. The design is open to interpretation, but keep it original (no decapitated Shreks, please :P )

The Deadline:
Wednesday, April 11 at midnight PST
Two weeks.

Okily dokily, here's my entry (updated!)
http://i18.tinypic.com/4i3kphj.jpg

Detail:
http://i13.tinypic.com/2cgc51s.jpg

The land of thermapolina has always been haunted by the dreadful stench of ogres, evil and rotting creatures that dwell in the mountains. Every now and then the local villages were plundered by the savage creatures, being robbed from their young ones as the ogres feed on children. One day, the wise king Aeraklies decided to put an end to this madness. A massive army was assembled, and they attacked the ogres at their homeground, deep within the peaks of horror. The environment was playing on the ogres side, and became their advantage. The cold and exhausted men got lost, and were killed one by one by the overwhelming ogres. Yet, Aeraklies would not admit defeat. Again and again, he marched armies from all around the corners of his empire. Like pigs for the slaughter, they were chopped down by the retaliating enemy.

Then the king got a crazed idea. So bizarre that h almost got thrown out of his own throne by the bewildered people. he planned to breed his very own ogre, and train it in perfection to kill his own kind. For there were no stronger creature than a larger ogre. A scout group were mustered, and quickly sent up into the mountains to steal young ogres. Despite grave losses by the kingdoms scout group, they managed to catch but one ogre cub. Deep within the hollows, the king chosed to breed his forthcoming Ogre Slayer. 20 years went past, before the king finally returned from the dark dungeouns. Nobody knew how he did it, but following him out of the tunnel was a massive ogre, trained by the king himself to hunt down and exterminate his own specie. Even though the creature was brainwashed to follow human orders, and kill ogres, it's natural instincts occured frequently. Therefore, dicipline was outmost important. His sly skin reveal several scars, indicating the rough treatment he recieves if he "misbehave".

During the first year, people were more afraid of it, than being willing to be rescued. But now when over 50 years has passed, and the old king Aeraklies is dead. People salute him as a saviour and hero, as he passed by town after town, cleansing the nearby hills and mountains for ogres.

First post, first Conceptart.org challenge.. This seems to be a fun place to begin, an interesting topic for my first victory! >: P And I believe that any topic makes a good challenge, because it's really what YOU, as the artist can do with it to make it interesting and unique?
Good luck everyone. E:

Doesn't the cliche-ness of the topic make it more challenging? I think it does. It's a theme that everyone and their mother has seen before, it'll be awesome seeing all the reinterpretations of it, trying to make it more new and original.
Whoohoo. I'm in.

Hey, thought i would give this challenge a shot, I was just wondering how far we can depart from the brief as i would like to do a sort of misunderstood ogre rather than just a normal clobber the ogre scene.

Appart from his clan, the confused ogre's mourn is guttural as he is attacked by a bone warrior, the ogre recognized that smell and the marks on that body; it was the ogre murderer.

And, with this topic, the boys shall be pretty damn victorious. :dur:

Oh well. I can't take this topic even remotely seriously, so here's some unfinished silliness. I don't know how much time I have for this and how much more ogreslayerness my head can take, but I want to post it anyway. Stupid puns, yarr!
(One of them being that the poses and stuff have been borrowed from this painting (http://www.abcgallery.com/S/serov/serov148.html).)

Alright, obligatory irate girl post:
her boobs do not make sense. 1) They are ridiculously impossibly huge. 2) If the character is in profile, the current breasts you have drawn mean that her left boob is significantly larger that her right. 3) Breasts don't start lined up directly under the armpit - they start in front of the armpit. 4) She's a warrior type, right, so she would have probably bound her breats down, because bouncing boobs are a pain in the fucking ass. 's why people wear sports bra.
I don't mean to sound like alksdjalkdjal. Just you know. Gotta represent. Cheers!

Anyways, so thats it.
Bonereaper: The legendary Ogre slayer. Bonereaper, given his nickname early on in his adventuring days, grew in legend because of his expert ability to dispatch ogres. These ogres were sometimes greater than four times his size, and he was viewed and respected as one of the greatest warriors across the land. He is rarely seen in public, and he has scoffed at anyone who has asked to become his squire or apprentice. Little else is known about him.

hehe, i didnt see it either but he explains it in his post (after a request..)
"team of ogre slayers" kind of like those old FBI cards with saddam etc, each one is a slayer.

I'm well aware of that, but my problem is that the line of text is the only apparent connection to the topic, the drawings themselves make no reference to ogres or the slaying thereof; none of those characters even have any weapons. If the requirements were that loose, you might as well draw a kitten sleeping on a pile of marshmellows accompanied by the sentence, "This thing kills ogres all the time." I won't disqualify the piece because it seems he put a lot of effort into it, I'm just saying that you have to draw a line somewhere between being on and off-topic, and in my opinion an on-topic piece should clearly present at least one of the key words.

see, i told you all it was a pretty boring topic ;)

And again, the topic isn't boring, it's the limitations people put on it within their minds that make pieces cliche. Just think if a topic like this showed up in a Last Man Standing round - I can guarentee that there would be some amazingly original interpretations that you'd probably never have thought of. Sometimes the overdone subjects are the most challenging, because you really have to push yourself to stand out.

DEVi6745

lol.. I'm just being odd, but seriously I did expect more legolas-like entrees. I myself have been dreaming up this odd idea of a biologist who handles a type of large mosquito that carries a fatal disease.. then a scene withall these large ogres dead with a mosquito bite and mushrooms growing from their decaying mushy corpses.. I have yet to fully execute it.. I don't think I've ever tried to do something that weird. MY IDEA. : ( GL to those who are still working too >: P

AlexC
April 8th, 2007, 02:58 AM
plate, while I get what your saying, I think that placing a sort of limitation based on the fact that they dont have weapons etc, really narrows the creativity down a helluva load.
Personally I dont want to go with the cliche muscly guy, mutant with gigantic weapon idea..

I think, AlexC, the kindof problem with your cards is that none of them give any indication of how any of them ogre-slay. Like, giant guy with sword is pretty self explanatory. Hell, even a ogre-squishing hippo is pretty self explanatory. The cards have very little indication of what they do, largely because the veiwing window of them is very small. I do like them though. I just wish two of them weren't yellow paper. Throws off the unity or somesuch.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to have an description so I'll write something, just in case.
Leopold Robinson is the hottest name in the ogre slaying scene in England these days. His arrogant attitude and charming looks make women go crazy but not only that, he's also a very skilled hunter. Unlike many of his fellow hunters, Leopold trusts in skill and strategy instead of brute force. He uses lightweight throwing knives which can pierce deep in the ogres flesh causing lethal damage.

Nice entries people! I especially dig Wolfbanes one, nice atmosphere and story.
Keep em coming!

Thanks, this is exactly what I was trying to get at - Alex, I don't mean to imply that you have to do a "cliche muscly guy" as you put it - I love the strange and original characters you've created, it's merely that they lack the setting to clearly connect them to the topic.

And asoir, no worries, I really didn't mean to call you out or anything. Just trying to clarify some points. :)

Keng
April 9th, 2007, 01:35 AM
Actually, there's only 5 colours in the bush. It didn't take quite that long. Bout 15mins. It was the part where I had to redo it on another computer to get the colours right (my monitor has about half the normal range of colour and 1/4 the range of shades :P) that took so long because after reformatting, the paint bucket wouldn't work. For a lot of the patterns I found that copy and paste was my friend. But even then...

The story behind this is pretty vague because i kept changing it while painting, but basically he's an ogre shaman outcast who killed his tribe out of revenge and became corrupt.

Wow :D
These entries all look amazing, lots of talent from the teenagers @ CA.
I wish I could have entered, but I'll have to wait until #28.

My finals up on page one. Any crits?
myalias: Love this pic. can't wait to see it finished. The colors work perfectly and intensify the mood.
OmertA: I like the shadows in it, but it appears a little too contrasted at the moment. Maybe some more detail will allow it to work, but maybe try brightening certain parts up a little? The anatomy of the figure is getting lost a little. It has great potential though!

The deadline's up, but there seems to be a glitch in the forum because it won't load any full pages (sets of 60 replies) of any thread in my browser. It's been like this for me all day, so I'll try again in the morning and see if it'll load all the entries. If not I'll find another computer to try it on, or someone else could set up the voting thread in the meantime. Sorry for the delay. :/
