Hi I'm new 2, but I i've been checking out this site for a little while and I've picked up on alot. The 2 dominent programmes are 'painter' and 'photoshop'. I personally use photoshop but I have seen equally good pieces from both programmes. Hope this helps.:)

Greetings:
Before you decide to buy Photoshop or Painter decide what you are going to use them for in the long run. If you want to recreate a similar experience to traditional painting you should get Painter, if you want to get a job in the industry like Graphic Design or Game Industry get Photoshop. I noticed most companies want people to know Photoshop.
I like Photoshop more myself, than Painter, but that's my preference. You can do great work with both, and that will be up to how well you develope your skills.
Photoshop is 600 and Painter is 300 bucks. If you can learn both. The workflows are prety different so if you learn Photoshop first you might hate Painter's workflow like I do. Both programs are pretty cool though. If you can afford both buy Photoshop first since Corel will let you purchase Painter for only 150. Says so on their website, www.corel.com. The other way to get Painter for 150 is by buying a Wacom tablet, which you'll need to get the most out of these programs, because they come with Painter Classic and that lets you upgrade to Painter 8 for 150. Hope that helps. Later.

i'm not 100% sure the offer still stands, but educational software releases of Painter 8 were only $100 at most educational software sites. Hella good deal :)

The painter 8 upgrade costs 149 and that's the regular price. The site states that you can upgrade to Painter 8 if you own a previous version of Painter, Painter Classic, or Photoshop. Check out the corel site for details. Later.

I like to use Macromedia Fireworks but it doesnt seem to get a mention much on this site or any site come to think of it when it comes to art work, is there any reason for that?

I'm a heretic, so I use Corel Photopaint (part of the Corel Draw package). I find it a lot more userfriendly than both PS and Painter. It can do about the same stuff as PS, but adds a LOT of options for people with tablets.
