Great sketchbook. The vag monster is funny, the arms are really clever. Your cartoon style is also very good, I especially like the mario. The organic thing you have going compliments your linework(or is it the other way around?), I'd like to see what your style looks like inked with a brush. Have you see the jenny finn comic that Mignola and Troy Nixey made? Your style reminds me of Nixey. good work.

Your stuff is very energetic and expressive, very good positive vibe here, throw some studies into the mix as well for u to gain a greater understanding of human anatomy, and figure gestures. Also try and train your lines so your strokes are more confident and clean this will compliment the appearance of your images even further. I'm trying the same thing myself, it is doing wonders for me.

But yeah keep the stuff coming and look fwd to seeing more. :D

last page is really awesome, love the compostion and those creatures

i gave you 5 stars for the imagination and fun your stuff has..

there are some issues but i'm pretty sure you'll figure everything out
In some of your drawing it feels you're not using the full rendering capacity of your pencil.. like in the more rendered stuff (the "whine" one and the more rendered face above that).. Looks like you could go back in and make your darkest darks some darker.. key areas like eyesbrows, nose holes, hair, cast shadow underneath the chin, nose etc..

just my 2 cents and thanks for the inspiration!!

hahah that's a cool sketchbook here! Your imagination is really great and the girl from your lifedrawingclass you drew looks hilarious (which means this drawing is SO cool :D) hehe.
There are some technical issues (like linework and rendering which tend to look a bit messy and rushed), but I'm sure that time and practice will wash em away. Keep goin mate!

Hey ya
ANdreas,
"2-days-without-drawing" pause or if i should work my way out of the mess.

Depends , what makes an artist a pro is the ability to draw even when you are in a funk moment. So it depends entirely on you at this point. FOr me , working my ass off when i am in a 'hole' helps. And yes Playing less starcraft might help too.

The latest updates are really nice, fluid. Its good to see you finally putting some colored stuff here. you still need to something fullfledged. The monster in the second pic sounds a lot like me when I am talking to girls.
Err what language is that, on the last page.Just curious.

neat stuff :D u really start kicking <3

suggestion : do some learning to understand how to draw objects into space -> perspective -> foreshortening ! (most important) -> vanishing points

the more you understand about the draw volumes in space ... the easiererere it gets (any object is a volume and has the 3 x y z axis .. knowing about this should boost anyones skills and understanding .. get it ! )

keep up ! :xpld:

Also, nice update! The linework is really good and the graphic feeling keeps on being nice:)

Man, very nice stuff. Very creative, and you're drawing is solid. I like the sense of design, as well. And the cartoony stuff is awesome. My only criticism is that your hatching tends to detract from the pictures, at least the way youre doing it now. It's kinda all over, and it doesn't really help show the form. If you really took the light source into consideration and hatched only in the shadows, I think it would make a huge difference.

Keep it up, you've got a good thing going!

Nice WCS man.but I see tht you didnt explain the forms all that much. Hmm any reason for that?Any ways nice use of orange , but be careful about using them too much, they might be a little distracting.like on the forehead and beneath the nose. But I gotta say you have a great sense of color composition.

And yes those monsters are some of my favs Here at CA.

very nice lines, as is already mentioned :D

"high five with a kid on the streets" ? well, this sure is a weird imagery haha

Good stuff, as usual! The drawings are great. I love all the faces, and the one monster with five eyes is really cool. I agree with what Bhanu said about the colors -- they don't seem to support the form much. It'd be awesome if you used the paint to give your stuff clearly defined light and shadow planes to make it really feel solid.

Keep it up!

I like the five-eyed guy. Also, everything on the page with the cellphone-screaming guy is cool. He's the best though:)
And now, for something completely different: a suggestion on pencil drawing.
Maybe you could try "glazing" the drawing with light uniform pencil strokes after getting it to this level (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=187592&stc=1&d=1187427249) so that it gets a more finished look. That's a matter of taste though:)

Its good to start thinking form when coloring. What book have you actually got?All prima all you need to know about painting is a good book(although I havent tried it myslef ,but its highly recommended) , also do tonal studies in charcoal and pencil, cast/barque studies if you want too. Helps a ton.

take care.

funfetus
August 22nd, 2007, 10:33 PM
I like the new stuff -- you have a really distinct design style with your weird, amorphous creature orgies. Something about them kinda remind me of the first Angel you see in Evangelion. The woman's face in the first one is really good, too. You do great faces.

Bhanu's recommendation for Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting is a good one, but it's very focused on painting from life. It'll teach you some fundamentals about light and shadow that are very useful, though. It's also very expensive -- if you're gonna get it, make sure you get it from the author's site.

I'd recommend that you get a hold of Andrew Loomis' books (http://acid.noobgrinder.com/Loomis). They're all good, but Creative Illustration in particular has a lot of great information about form and value that should help you out a lot.

Keep it up!

Very nice work. I like that we're seeing more people here. I like looking at people. Your figure drawing looks pretty good. Hey:)
The last sketches are really nice! The linework on the boy here (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=201737&stc=1&d=1189685760) is great!
One thing that jumps out at me though, is that there are no accents in your drawings. Nothing darker to grab the viewers eye. This is OK to some degree when it's just linework, but you should try to restate some lines to strengthen their impact. In the aforementioned boy, for instance, I would go over the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and chin again. Make them darker and the face will pop out.
Try doing this here too (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=201734&stc=1&d=1189685716). Now the features get lost in the hatching which is of equal intensity as their lines.

Good luck! And keep having fun:)

September 17th, 2007, 09:07 PM
The first two are great, as usual. What's your inspiration for all that...stuff? What IS that stuff? It still looks awesome.

The master study is not so hot in my opinion -- your own drawings are much better. Maybe it's just the master you're studying...I dunno. It doesn't have the feeling of solidity and correct anatomy that your faces usually do.

The painting -- I dunno. There still doesn't seem to be a sense of form and mass coming through. I'm telling you -- check out that Loomis book, "Creative Illustration" if you have the time.

Keep it up!

And the onion study. It looks a bit blurry though. What hardness are you using for your brushes? You should try either adding some sharper edges here and there or just increase the opacity of the brush. Also, try using an unsharp mask filter in Photoshop. It'll make your painting pop out.

Great stuff, man. I love the walk cycle on that crazy looking dude. Animation's something I never got into, but I always kinda wanted to. I can't really see taking the time to try to learn it right now, but maybe eventually... Your character designs are so cool. So much...character.

Great to see that you're doing some studies, too. It isn't fun, but it helps a lot.

I'm also wondering if you kinda look like your drawings (not the cartoony characters, of course). I heard someone say recently that most artists draw themselves, either consciously or unconsciously. I think it's true for me, and most of your faces bear a strong resemblance to each other. Eh.

You are obviously skilled in rendering and shading, so if you do have a hard time rendering in ps, just do what you are already doing with pencils. and talking about that, i gotta say that i admire those sketches/drawrings.:) i would like to be able to fill a page like that... ahhh... keep on doing this alot!:) see ya 'round!

i'm truly impressed by that flash game! I think some sort of boss would be right up your alley, so if you would be able to do that with the programming and all, that would be fantastical. i bet you would do the best boss alive today. please please add some silly attack move for the dude, preferrably super-silly actually. maybe thats the entrance to using the backpack?

about the paintings, the new ones has what i was talking about, the face of the dude (?) looks sweet. Keep on going and use reference. if you do, you will see what you are doing wrong in places which you thought you did right. theres no shame in using refs! one other thing is that atleast from my experience, digital paintings often look like crap and you hate them in the beginning, but that it often gets alot better as you continue. so don't despair and keep on going! it might not work that way for you, but then, it might! hope i'm not lecturing here, its just that i dont know if you already know this stuff.:)

is that guy jellyfishing?!:D

This is truely a wonderful sketchbook. All your human characters seem to have a sense of innocence about them...especially in their eyes, or perhaps its gentileness? Who knows but i like it.

Definately should work on the hands more, thats the only thing that fizzes out in your drawings. They're just as important as that face!

Fun stuff!

haha, your flash game was awesome. Well at least I thought it was pretty alright until I found the waterbooster, or whatever you want to call it, and it became superdynamite. :D
Great stuff, we want an update!

Man, you have such a weird visual vocabulary. Really cool. I'd like to see you trying new different stuff too, though. I guess that applies to everyone, me included.

agree with krossj on this last one - much better and more interesting shapes than the others and the linework is looking good. As an overall crit I'd say clean up some of you linework and rendering and work some more on shapes and rhythm.

cool though, like your attitude :)
keep it up!

Try this easy exercise to stretch the tendons and ease the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. (http://www.ergonomic-resources.com)

1. Extend your wrists and fingers outward, ahead of your body, positioning your hands and fingers toward the ceiling, like you are signaling someone to "stop".

2. Wait five seconds in this position, then relax and straighten both wrists in front of the torso.

3. Keeping the arms straight out front, clench both hands in a fist.

4. Rotate the wrists down to the floor while maintaining a fist and then hold for five seconds.

5. Relax and straighten both wrists and hands into their normal position and repeat the above steps for as many as five to seven more times.
