Hi all. After a long delay I`m posting one of my last works. So here it is.

Nice impact and nice use of color. I like the texture of armour.
The face are cool, but there is something that bother me, seems a little flat and distorted. Try to view specular.

Great job, Smyk, next gen quality. The armour have a really intresting design, the face however is somewhat annoying but I can't put my finger on what it is, perhaps you should lose the rambo headband or something. It's well rendered nevertheless. Is this for a game or is it a portfolio piece?
Keep it up, :)

i like this one a lot too, cool armor design. But the pic is really huge...post a slightly smaller version maybe?
i kind a think that red headband breaks up the piece too much, but its good anyway ;)
keep sharing

It's very very good. The light on his left leg should be more on the side to be consistent, rather than along the front edge.

Another great image... I just think you need to add more detail / texture to the face to get it up to the level of the rest of the illustration. Facial hair, wrinkles, highlights... anything would help. The face is such a focal point and it's really detracting from what would be a brilliant illustration.

I think this looks really good but as said by the previous posters the head needs a bit more detail, perhaps add wear and tear to the armour and the man himself such as scarring on both the armour and his face and some worn down paint effects.

Man I like this, it really looks like its a heavy suit (you can say "suit" right?)! The face isnt as good as the rest perhaps he just looks too kind or something..
still that costume is sweeeet

The armor is very well done, is this all done in photoshop, or did you use a 3D program as well? If you dont already have a job, I would suggest applying to Epic Games when they have a concept job open

is that Charlie Sheen? he's been in enough war movies already
nice gun, and i really like the wear-and-tear on the armor

Looks very good, like the upper part of the armor a lot, looks futiristic. But the leg part and especially lower parts towards the feet look too rounded and 'knight-ish' and those blue crystals or glass parts look like ornaments. Doesn't quite fit with the futirstic theme.

Hmm this looks awful familiar.... I dunno if James Hawkins (Hawkprey) would appreciate you using his designs for Gears of War/Unreal Tournament as such obvious inspiration and then claiming it as your own.

Man that's a gorgeous piece. The detail is wonderful!

I think the problem with the face is one of two things, there are no cheek bones that I can discern or that the smoothness is consistant around the face, for christ sake he doesn't even have any stubble!

wow mate this is a really great pic!
like it very much!!
i think the face is to soft, no much hard edges but the other areas of the pic has some.
a little beart would be cool

While I agree that they are both heavily armoured, muscular fighters I think you're being far too accusatory and critical of this piece. Seriously... did Hawkprey plagiarize the Final Fantasy film (see attached)?
Of course not... he took the designers hoped for character and made it his own interpretation. This "type" of imagery and armour, this look, has been around for years (ESPECIALLY in games)... this is his take on it.

It becomes very hard to discern plaigarism when it comes to human subjects or matierial because all in all the structure and composition of the human doesn't change....to clarify, there are only so many ways you can create shoulder pads before someone screams plaigarism but you can't change it too extensively because it won't make physical sense or logic.
It's like the basis for all artwork creative paradox's, in 99% of the cases it has probably been done before you, it's about taking your influences and adding your own creativity to the mix. Anytone who claims complete lack of influence on their art is lying through their teeth.
However on the happenstance of a useful visual tool, notice the "ruffness" of the suit, the chipped edges, scuffed shoulder pads...etc. These things should be added to give him an experienced idea behind him...because right now his story speaks to me as fresh out of boot camp, newbie, never has had a chance to get his OD's dirty, but given his stature, stance, age, and overall general impression I think the suit portays him wrong!

It's the flesh tones. LOve this piece, yet it's the flesh tones that can be livened by adding more reds and blues.:) From th elooks of it, you're applying color by using the colorize settings in photoshop. Recommend you take it a step further and add some more reds, oranges, yellows and blues to the light skin tone.:) Armour looks great. THough if it were to be modeled in 3d, you gotta make some move room around the pelvis area and waist area, imagine he can do the splits and stomach crunches. That armour will get in the way And definitely make a series of these marines. Adds even more cohesion to the design.:) Saw your earlier post. Good stuff!!!:) Thanks for sharing.:)

If anything, he's guilty of being too generic in this image. This type of futuristic marine has been done and done to death. Final Fantasy movie, Gears of War, Killzone, the list goes on. To make a new and interesting future marine, a lot more stylization has to come into play. Unfortunately, it also has to retain the same air of utility that modern military equipment must have.
I think perhaps it needs more variation in the armor thickness at points, everythings a uniform thickness around the body and you don't get areas of contrast like joints, overlapping plates, etc...
Rabid
March 25th, 2007, 04:41 AM
Agreed with the thickness idea, tends to be that solid plates will be split and divided with mesh inbetween them but hardly ever scaled in fashion...although a scaled design will work for the abdominal region for crunches...

really awesome !
the face has been mentioned, but it looks like maybe 2 minutes of work could fix it.
mostly though, i feel that the background/ font are kinda underwhelming considering the quality of the actual piece.
really awesome!

It's really nice, and others have commented on the art and rendering.. But isn't mobility quite important for a marine soldier? Like it is now, he wouldn't be able to move or pivot is torso at all, and with the armour plates on the thighs so close to the crotch, the legs would have very low mobility as well.
And I will just assume he's hardcore enough not to be shot in the arms or head ;)
Some things also lack the sense of volume, like the details on the chest and the large pipes/cables on the stomach. But still, the design is awesome.

All right guys. In this case ( MARINE ), my primary goal was to create a character just for people in my guild ( concept artist guild ), and show them the full path from start to finish in shots. So i don`t bothered in extra-originaly style, movement, weight so much. I have did it just for education and growing my experience. I like the "GEARS of WAR" style and design, but I don`t copy this syle. May be some parts and shapes looks like the "GoW" style, but it`s just a coincidence.
Anyway, thanks for comments.

An excellent piece in my opinion. Would be fun to know what technique you use etc. What I wouldn't mind seeing, would be some sharper shadows on the face, they are very soft, and lend a bit of a baby face look to your character. The rendition of the armor is superb. I take my proverbial hat off.
Don't worry about the plagiarism "whine", those who say that, haven't really seen that much of the the stuff that floats about, in a myriads of comics, games, RPG art etc.

wow, if this is the future soldiers of Ukraine, then I dont wanna mess with em ;) did tsernobyl give them bigger muscles or something? :O great work, and I must say like the rendering alot ;) this isnt illustration, just a concept design of a costume; the pose is basic so that the armour can be portrayed without loos of too much information. if I was amodeller I'd be able to do alot with just this image.

Here is my progress shots, but not all of them. I`m starting with line art. After that fill the basic forms with colors ( in separate layers ). I`v created a new layers: for shadows and for light. And after all I`m adding some scratches, dirt, scuffs, etc.

Great armor design.
Every piece looks like it belongs there and seems very functional. All the elements come together as a really cool, unified suit that I'd like to have.
It looks like you were sure about the armor & gun from the get-go but not about his face :) ...I dont think it's a big deal, it's all about the armor here...it would look good on all kinds of characters. Personally, I think it works the way it is.
One thing I'd suggest, having seen your other post, maybe try using harder brushes when painting flesh, it will force you to be decisive...

Whats' everyones fascination with big ass looking soldiers, with all the tech lookin shit? I mean, I am way more into sleek designs, even if they are a little gritty, and the last I checked, so is the army. so I don't get it. Sure Gears of Wars-esque stuff can look cool, but it's so inefficient and stupid, no modern day soldier is gonna stroll into battle with that much shit on him, let alone a future one.
But anyways, it is a good design, my beliefs aside, and I personally have no other problem then that.

i really like the perspective and armor, i wish i could draw armor like that! I also really enjoyed the step by step you posted.
the skin and face is missing something, but i don't know what. maybe it needs more blues and texturing in the skin ? the arm skin is well done, maybe there is a clue there.

Thanks for the progress shots, they are really valuable for people like me, trying to learn the ropes on computer coloring. *thumbs up*
@JJ Mckool
Well, many things we see on this forum are hardly ergonomic, or plausible, but that doesn't mean they can't look cool, and more importantly, be FUN TO DRAW. How many chicks with weapons, and armored boobs do you see here daily. Go rant about that. :D

No witch hunt please. This is original work of art, I think Hawkprey would be flattered as opposed to being unappreciative. You have the wrong mind set.
As to the image, it looks cool.
