First of all I must say Hello to Ca. I've been a longtime lurker but I've finally decided to start a sketchbook. I know I need work (MUCHO!) but thats what this is for.

So with out further greetings... some of my pencil art.
I just got a tablet (nothing fancy *coughwacomcoug*) but I really want to start messing around with that too.

Nice to see you hear. Not bad stuff, you certanly know how to get the range of greys out of your pencils. If you really want to excell, do life and anatomy studies. Oh and post everything, just get it out there. Keep up the great work.

So, this is my first piece done in Painter. I'm planning on attempting (rofl) to do a study or something once a day after spring break is over because atm I just dont have the patience to do anything but Paint, doodle, and play Ninja Gaiden (HOLY HELL ITS HARD) and Fallout 2.

I've been messing with this for about 2 days, just getting used to 'stuff' in painter. Its done with the digital air brush and the 'just add water' Blender. no setting were messed around with yet. I'd really like to know how you people get those amazing textures on your pieces, blending wise. It may (probably) is my lack of skill atm but I just cant do it. Using painter is like learning how to draw again for me. I just need practice.

I agree with Bradh898 about the anatomy studies, you should definitley study anatomy more. I disagree with Bradsh898's comment on your pencil values. The shading is way too close in values and looks very flat. Ease up on the pencil when your drawing too. Nice start for a skecthbook though. :)

Does that mean the shading or the pencils in general?

My first 5 minute speed paint. I plan on doing this AT LEAST once a day. I'm searching for some anatomy books and whatnot.
Ive got a year of highschool left and I've decided to get serious with my art.
My plan ATM.
1. Anatomy Work. (When I get ref books.)
2. Speed Paint. (5 minutes, lots-o-'em)
3. LEARN Lighting.
4. 1 sketch a day, 2 on weekends.
5. 1 Painter piece a week (too much?)

My First speed paint of my system, Its unfinished but hey... I gave myself 5 minutes to do it.

So, this post wont have any art in it... yet. Its more of a 'story/reason/art will come soon' post. So, I shall begin with the story and all that good stuff.
...
A year ago a buddy of mine and I were at work talking about our ex-boss (as of this year I'm moving) and mocking him in good fun. I had been watching the anime one piece at this time and I though it'd be a nifty Idea to do a Comic/Short about Pirates. Pirates that live on a planet that is 70% Desert wasteland. The only difference is that its Iron shavings and not sand.
<< Thats the planet for the most part.
We kept talking about this for most of the day and came up with a crap load more ideas. The primary energy source is magnetic conversion devices (Quasi-Steampunk/Cyberpunk designs) that will appear on most ships. Solar sails on the ships that absorb solar winds to create energy. We had a tone of characters that I ended up writing down somewhere that I'll post along with Pictures. It was supposed to be cooky-nutty but In the end it ended up being a serious Idea.

I'm planning on posting the character art here along with ship designs and story lines and all that good stuff.
*back to anatomy book search!*

So, I haven't updated in a while mainly because I'd like to start doing characters more and I'd like to do it right, proportion wise. Meaning that I wouldn't like to get any bad habits. << I cant seem to find the Bridgeman books anywhere but amazon so I ordered the figure drawing one and I'm waiting for that.
In the mean time... I did this during English

Good start to a SB. You do need to draw alot more from life and from references. Books by Andrew Loomis are also a good idea, you can get half of his as pdf's on the net.

Use the books to give you ideas about guidelines, underlying structure etc, BUT life and reference are still the best teachers.

Just draw more and have fun.

Thanks a lot for the comment dude. I just found the Loomis book PDF's and The Bridgeman Book (Life drawing one) I Hopefully will have something up soon.

I see some too short legs there.... Better watch out for hips, tighs and legs... :)

Else good, keep doing the studies, will pay off a lot. :)

I'm darn lazy when it comes to that at times, but I know whenever I sit down and do it for real for a while, all my drawings come out better in the end.... It pays off :)

Sweetness. If you work hard at this art and do not give up, you will go far. You have potential. To keep on posting after hardly anyone comments/critiques is a pretty hard thing to do.

This (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=142589&d=1180123197) guy is a good rendering, though he looks like he is made of copper. Now try to make one that looks like human flesh.

Also, check out one of my favorite digital artists, SPARTH, and his tutorial on how he works: http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/sparth2/sparths_cwu_01.asp

Sparth starts with an abstract canvas, then after he gets everything balanced in the image the puts in details, etc.

I hope this helps and keep up the good stuff. DRAW, DRAW, DRAW!

Hurricane - Thanks for swinging by yourself

Matt - Thanks for the props dude. Too bad I haven't done the whole "draw draw draw" bit... just draw. :/

Enydimon - Thanks for stopping by. Anatomy will be sketched.

Random garbage sketch update.
Nothing I like, nothing good. Etc. Bleh!
Anatomy shall come soon. I've read the loomis stuff in PDF form. Only problem is that I cant stand jsut sitting and reading at a PC. I've used the bridgeman stuff for a bit but I finally have a lot of time to shoot the shit and draw.

I now present... garbage.

are you doing any referenced stuff?
i think that it would be beneficial to do some referenced stuff... anatomy and still lifes.
the best fantasy artists know the basics of both drawing and painting.
get the basics down and go from there
that doesnt mean that you cant sketch a monster or a sword weilding barbarian as you learn, you have to keep yourself interested. but as you progress you will be able to realize the fantasy subjects in a much more realistic and believable way.

ive been buying dvd's from gnomonworkshop
they have been incredibly helpfull!
i think that they have some good dvd's onbasic drawing but i could be wrong.
loomis is good
hogarth is also good but a little off in his figures.
problem with the loomis books is they are expensive or outta print.
id love to get the pdfs that the guy in the page before was talking about...

Hey man. Thanks for the comment in my sketchbook!
I see some nice concepts here. You've got some good designs and obviously have a fertile imagination.
However, now is the time to study. You have good ideas, but your knowledge of how to put them down on paper needs developing. You can start by buying Bridgman or downloading Loomis and studying up on your anatomy. Take a figure drawing class to really learn how to draw the human form. Do some still lives or sketch from life.
My two cents. For now.
By the way, how's living it a testicle working out for you?:P

Kamikazebob
October 8th, 2007, 11:08 PM
Roidvoid - I really should do some reference stuff. I keep saying I'll do it but never do. I need to hunker down and really start working harder. Next update will have some Ref based material on it. I swear.

Moai - I really cant take figure drawing classes around this little'ol town of mine but I'm starting to just chill in classes and draw people. I'll really need to hit a park up or something for some landscape/life drawings before the weather goes to hell.
And yeah its all warm and watery in here. kinda comfy.

Cool stuff man,and its good your working with details as well, and costuming your people and horses :D But yeah, pretty much do more anatomy studies, give loomis a shot and bridgman too. I found bridgman very helpful. Im starting out with vilppu right now and the first few chapters in his book helps with seeing forms and depth so I suggest yuo check that out as well. Keep it up :D

Your horse guy's leg is a bit too small. But if you make it any longer it might be too big for the horse,so i suggest resizing his upper body then.

hey man, cool concepts!

nice to see the lifedrawings, drawing from life is one of the best ways to learn, especially the nude figure.

I would definitely recommend drawing from life as much as you can, and learning how to mesure with your eye (takes about a year to get reasonable at it, if you are up for it), and then bringing what you learn back into your drawings from imagination.

keep it up, cheers!
