SUNDAY, MARCH 25th
The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday afternoon my time (GMT +2) yet i'll have a look at the last entries.

THE BLACK QUEEN
Hey there mr Oblio

I am sick as pig and off work today: nice pick me up to find I have just won my first chow!! (by the skin of my teeth no less!)

My topic choice is as follows:
Cheers,
Jake (cakeypigdog)

THE BLACK QUEEN

The year is 2025. The Black Queen is the figure-head of the British- Japanese empire known as the GBNR.

The GBNR are one of 3 super-states at constant warfare with each other. It is the hundredth year since the forming of these states. Our queen is a divine leader as well as a military commander.

Her appearance should bring together Victorian and traditional Japanese aesthetics but also take into account the 100 years that have passed since the joining of these two cultures.

Now... concept!

______________
Topic elements:

1 = divine leader
2 = military commander
3 = victorian&japanese mix 100 years later.

Make sure your picture contains these - you will receive 3 VOTES for each topic covered.
_____________
Please try to save your progress - maybe a nice tutorial is comming out.
BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. The host will make the selection.

DON'T FORGET YOUR PRIZE! THE WINNER OF THIS ROUND WILL SELECT THE TOPIC OF THE NEXT ONE!
And will assist me in selecting the entries for the poll. In one week we'll have a new client.Vote him now <3

Think I might be as well... been a long time away...

Edit: First rough... She's going to have a lot of art nouveau detailing mixed in with the Japanese stuff. Lots of tightening up to do yet, mainly on the the legs, which look a bit poo... It's a bit rude at the moment, but I shall alter her costume to cover her modesty as befitting a queen. Girls with swords huh? There's a step outside the comfort zone... :nohope:

http://www.darkrising.co.uk/Stuff/QueenRough02.jpg

A bit of colour, to get a mood... I feel I'm missing the Victorian element a bit too much at the moment...

Final pic. I'd love to work on this further and if I get a chance I will, but time is against me for now. Crits and advice very welcome! Some amazing entries this round, and I really look forward to peoples finals! Edit: Altered the face abit more... and gave her a cleavage! :)

Worship me with fire and blood; worship me with swords and with spears. Let the woman be girt with a sword before me: let blood flow to my name. Trample down the Heathen; be upon them, o warrior, I will give you of their flesh to eat!

I'm in! Sounds neat!

Thumbnail time! Just a couple ideas. I like the one on the right more. The asymmetry is neat. I ultimately want to make the outfit to look like it is REALLY uncomfortable to wear. I started thinking about Victorian and Geisha outfits and how painful they seem. Anyways, crits are welcome and encouraged.

UPDATE: Added rough pencils. Much better ideas coming through here but now I have a bit more Japanese and want a little more Victorian. OH, and yeah, the proportions are off. :-P Starting on the final pencils soon.

NOW...WITH SOME COLOR! Unfortunately, this is as far as I am going to be able to go at the moment. I will finish this up later this week but I have some other things I need to take care of. So I would love some comments on it, especially the color. It has been a long while since I have used colored pencils and I like them but I think I may need to learn to paint digitally, the work some of you guys are doing in the computer is blowing my mind!

so if its 2025, and the GBNR has been around 100 years, does that mean we are taking a hypothetical situation that britain and japan got together before 1925 and then extrapolating that 100 years? or did you mean 2125?

Here's what I've got so far. I've combined a furisode gown with a Victorian-style high-necked collar ( something to make it nearly impossible to tilt her head down), and threw on some braided epaulets for a more martial feel. Much like Rogzilla, I want this outfit to be excruciating to wear and have it show. I know the ox horn hairstyle is more Chinese, but it reminds me a little of Queen Victoria, so I think it stays. I'm looking forward to inserting a whole bunch of military background. I'm looking to make this look like a propaganda poster.

Thoughts? Crits?

http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/23576.jpghttp://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/23582.jpg

Update: OK, then. I've started sketching the underdrawing. I'm wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew with the phalanx of soldiers in the background, but given my overall satisfaction with the project so far, I consider it a challenge instead of a problem. Still, it's kind of making me want to splash out for a nice shiny tablet and take a stab at digital painting ( until they start making poster paints with an UNDO function).

Update again: Started painting. Flag and sky done in watercolor. I think I'll want to go back in and do it again in poster paint; I don't like the look of the paper texture complicating the image. Other than that, I like where this is going. Great job everyone!

OK. All done.

I intend to incorporate elements of military uniform into the final design, but my reading of the character is that she is a commander and civilian monarch rather than a warrior. I imagine her in the same vein as Queen Victoria or the West Empress Dowager (though a bit more savvy with her management of the military treasury). She would be trained in fencing and spear-fighting as an aspect of her courtly upbringing (along with tea ceremonies, dance and flower arranging), and carries a katana as an outward symbol of her military authority, but at no point in her entire life has she actually been in danger of bodily harm, much less engaged in mortal combat.

firstly may I say congrats to my boy cakey well done man awsome work!

Ok this is my work in progress, my idea is that the queen is baisically dying, so her husband (the king) before his assination made her these black widow-esqe legs to follow him in to battle.
Since his death she has proven herself as a worthey leader of her nation, and despite her failing health will always be found at the very front of any skirmish.

Black widow legs aside i plan to make the most of the victorian/samuarai thing which you can see more of in the second pic. no sword yet either

excellent entries so far peeps looks like an ace round!

I think this is going to be a busy one! Some great stuff in here already.

Cakeypigdog: Great range of thumbs - they all feel battle-ready yet elegant.

D_Baker: Stylish! The spider legs idea is a winner.

Hurricane: Great shape. I hope you don't think I'm treading on your toes but Victorian bustle/long dress shape is too good a motif to pass up.

Here's my bunch of thumbs. I'm going to go with something akin to the design on the right. The queen will ride like a figurehead at the top of some sort of giant dress/vehicle thing. I'm not sure whether the dress will be filled with mechanical gubbins or a bunch of slaves. Either way, the idea is that she's floating along serenely while under the surface there's lots of frantic movement going on (like a swan's legs beneath the water). I really hope I get a chance to finish.

What are you doing oishiiniku peeking up at innocent swans in the lake?! Hehe, I really like your wording and that is some interesting thinking. Did you see swans legs in action on a nature show or did you just think that's the way it has to be?

Your design is rocking! I dig the totally unnecessary amount of wheels and cogs! Great steam punk action you got going on there!

Delmar

D-Baker: First thumbs are very promising, canīt wait to see a progress.

GothikQ3: I donīt know why there should be cyberqueens in the first place....we are talking about the year 2025 and not 2225. I know that the calculation of times has no relation to our real one, but for me the year 2025 is not really predicating a futuristic cyberworld.

gtgauvin
March 21st, 2007, 11:03 AM
Likewise, I think the concept of stiff, uncomfortable costumes is quite appropriate to the spirit of this challenge. Modes of dress among the elites of the imperial societies of Japan and England in the early 20th century were as ornate as they were constrictive, and it seems that that's a common aesthetic which many partaking in this activity have arrived at independently of one another. If the character were derived from, say, Nero's Rome, I might consider more in the way of flamboyant decadence.

Rogzilla
March 21st, 2007, 11:16 AM
No one is "insisting" on the uncofortable to wear. I know I just used it as a starting point. Giesha had to go through horrible ceremonies of having thier hair pulled back tight and walked on large, unbalanced slabs of wood. Meanwhile, Victorian fashion pretty much had built in corsets. Heck, even today I know many women who completely abuse and bruise their bodies in order to make themselves comely. And have you ever tried walking in heels? Oh SNAP!

As for futuristic, again the starting point was Victorian/Traditional Japanese. It is 100 years after their union but who is to say where technology has gone? Was there a World War II? Did America develop the A-Bomb? Did someone else? Who is the dominate power? While it is possible to add in some futuristic aspects (D-Baker's are a neat little idea out of left field I think) I don't think it is needed. Heck, the war could have turned nuclear long ago, leaving the world in nuclear winter and these waring nation forced back into Fudeal concepts.

Oshiiniku and D-Baker: Really interesting takes, both of you. I'd forgotten about a technological aspect to the design.

Everyone is doing great. And I don't think the concept is going for uncomfortable, but the two elements do have a certain level of discomfort inherent to them. I'm thinking especially of the Victorian aspect (except for the Regency period just before Victoria's ascendance to the throne, most of that era had corsets and crinoline skirts, ie big hoop skirts), and there's a certain amount of poise to be had when you're trying to come off as divine.

Here's my WIP...

http://innovations.ie/blackqueen.jpg

...and here's my final. It's not as finished as I'd like, and it's just a pure costume design, but I don't think I'll have the time to do any more. I originally wanted to do some intricate embroidery on the huge sleeves and I'm not too happy with the fan. Maybe another time...

By the way, the thing on her head is actually a hat that's sitting at an almost 90 degree angle facing forward, being held up by hair, the green ribbons behind it, and probably some magic.

http://innovations.ie/steve1138_chow64_blackqueen.jpg

The Black Queen

Based on similar masks worn by ancient Samurai warriors, the Black Queen's face mask at once indicates her military position and represents her divinity - as divine leader of the GBNR, her true appearance is never revealed. The mask depicts the mouth of the lion traditionally employed by the British to represent their Empire. It now stands for their ruler's strength. The fan and sword she holds are merely ceremonial, harkening back to times and traditions long since past.

this is the Queen. though she's a mastermind with politics and warfare, she prefers not to do much physical activity. instead she stays in her palace, and green-screens all of her events.

GothikQ3: I don´t know why there should be cyberqueens in the first place....we are talking about the year 2025 and not 2225. I know that the calculation of times has no relation to our real one, but for me the year 2025 is not really predicating a futuristic cyberworld.I was thinking of the same thing... Did CAKEYPIGDOG mean 2225?... I'm only gonna be in my 40s in 2025... I admit Japan was vastly influenced by the west after World War II (and some even before that), and that would somewhat account for the 100 years of Victorian influence... Although if he/she (sorry CAKEY if you're a guy... or girl) meant that they have converged together after 100 years, then 2225 would be the more plausible one...

Yes, it is 2025, this is already established earlier in the thread. It is a different time line..or different Earth...Earth um...Pi (I like Pi) and will be absored with the Crisis on Infinite Earths occurs. :-P Anyways, that is why there is a Victorian Influence. The allying occured in 1925...actually a little after the Victorian era but close enough darn it! X-P

about the dates: it is meant to be near future (almost contemporary) not distant future.

The idea for the breif is set in alternate earth where, for whatever reason, japan and the UK formed a new world power in the 1920's. if people want to do futuristic stuff that is cool, who can say what technology would be available now if the last 100 years had been different.

just have fun with it chaps!

Man all these entries so far are quite intimidating 0.o
I'm working on mine though, hopefully it'll turn out okee :)
As far as someone stating cybernetics being in the queen earlier, technically this is a hypothetical future, anything could've happened between WWII and 2025, for all we know manga took over and we now have giant mecha roaming the streets lol!
I mean, after all, the topic is pretty open to interpretation. Mine is sort of cyberpunkish at the moment.
I just gotta keep focusing on finishing pieces rather than worrying about being successful at the moment. Who knows, maybe it'll turn out all right ;)

On another note, it's suprising that I'm not seeing many corsets, as that was what I think made victorian style so unique for its time. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough though.

filip: Amazing work so far, I'm a huge fan of really filling up your canvas, so that looks amazing to me! Just keep working and fleshing it out even more :) I especially like the ambient lighting. Amazing work!

Supervlieg: START OVER?! Wowza! No way I would think you would need to start over! That looks amazing!

Howie: BAH! You should post it anyway! People are only hardest on themselves, and besides, you can only get better with some constructive criticism.

How the crap do you guys color so well, opencanvas + Tablet? I've been wondering myself about a tablet... hmmm....

Well anyway, until next time,

More work. First idea was all pencil. Thought I would try another idea with just my tablet ...

This time, I decided to use a more soldierly attitude, and with some obviously victorian traits. Rather than just plate armor used in my previous sketch, I decided to make the plate armor nod more towards a pattern that would remind one of a girdle. Add in some mechanical armor on the arm, which was inspired by both victorian armor and samurai plates (the shoulders are the more obvious samurai touch) so thats what came out so far. The overall feeling I got when I got to this point was that she seems like she should lead, but it would be more a nation of scoundrels who fight against larger superpowers. She, herself is scholarly, but with a vicious alterego.

Nice work Moreuvian_lx9 . She's got a bit of a Joan of Arc feel to her. I guess she was turned into a saint, which could be tied in with the 'divine' part of the brief. There's some smashing designs coming through. I guess I don't see her as an actual warrior, more of a figurehead, removed from the actual fighting... a divine untouchable!

Poshspice: I like this design. It is very sexy. And the lighting you are establishing and I could say so many things about the way she is holding that long...sword. *whistles*

Howie: This seems much more Eastern European than British. I like that you didn't go with the typical pretty girl type, she's got some meat on her bones. She could really kick some butt.

Moreuvian_lx9: What you have up is still really hard to judge but I like the direction you are going with this.

gtgauvin: I like the idea of the propaganda poster. I don't see a lot of English influence other than the flag but the design is very solid. I like the watercolor look but maybe another layer instead of poster paint?

cakeypigdog: Awesome design and illustration. I think you have really captured the regal aspects of both cultures. I'm glad you didn't go with the pistols...was a bit too cliche.

TroyWilkerson: I really like the asymmetry. It seems a little bit too much like just pieces of the two costumes instead of a fusion of the styles. The drawing itself is very strong and I really want to see where you take it.

Tommoy: Very neat. This one is a lot more Victorian than Japanese but it looks pretty awesome. I like the style and you definitely gave her a strong sense of attitude.

Pesmerga: I like the second one better too. The first one seems too much cut and pasted together, again combining costumes and not culture. The second one is much more successful. I really like seeing your process and thumbnails.

hurricane: Excellent. Again, a very regal design. Excellent execution. Bravo.

Wasker: Hmmm, interesting. I wanna see where this goes. Keep going!

D-BAKER: Badass. I kind of like it without the mech just because she looks magical and floaty. She doesn't seem to be putting a lot of weight down on to the mech, do you know what I mean? I can't place what it is about it and maybe it is just me. In any case, it is still an awesome design and a drawing.

Kredepops: Love both these drawings. I hope you produce a final! ^_^

oishiiniku: KNEEL BEFORE THE MIGHTY QUEEN! Very mighty design, very much capturing the imposing idea of a divine leader.

steve1138: Too early to give too much critique. I like the idea of the samurai mask. FINISH IT!

Arpad: The sketches look neat but I am not sure what is going on. I suppose I don't have to in the sketches but it is always helpful. The corset it very good though. Nice to see someone to go for it.

Supervlieg: DO NOT CHANGE! KEEP DEVELOPING IT! I WILL CRY IF YOU DON'T!

filip: A much simpler design and that is its strength. I wish you had time to develop it just a little bit more but it still looks good.

Adi: WOW! Out of no where! Those are great! Blue ballpoint? I love that medium for sketching! The designs are sexy but regal with a good strength to them. Like the good mixture of the two cultures.

Moreuvian_lx9: ...I think I dated her once. Seriously though, a neat design. I missed you previous sketch so I can't compare this to that for progress but the style you are using is strong.

RES: I love the pallet you are using. She seems a very strong character and fits into her surroundings well. I feel like someone is about to get knighted.

kissorkill: While the drawing feels a little flat you are one of the more successful at combining the cultures. Keep on drawing!

Delmar: This looks like a Talous LaTecht drawing (I know I screwed up that name but you know who I mean, right?) The Japanese influenceis very subtle here and it makes it a nice contrast to everyone else's.

Cowkitty: Another good fusion of the two cultures. It seems like an underpainting but it is strong enough to work as a final piece. Maybe develop the flesh tones a little more?

ikuru: While it isn't the idea so much, there is something very cute about the design. She seems so innocent in her pose but I get the feeling she could kick some serious butt

trev: Both interesting designs but I like the bottom one more. I don't think she needs a gun though. If you do have a gun, think of something more...ceremonial. I can't think of any guns like that...maybe a rifle of some sort?

FridayEve: Another VERY unique design. A bit more contemporary Japanese school girl in it but that may be Victorian too. Your style is very awesome, like a classical oil painting.

BryanYoung: Liking the thumbnails. The one it seems you are going with has more benevolent qualities which is something missing from many of the designs. I would like to see just a little bit more of the military leader myself but the design is very strong.

liamjames: Is she flying around on steam jet packs attached to her pantyhose? Odd but in a good way. Her eyes are really cold and she isn't wearing shoes...is she a robot? It is a neat design and I would like to see it finished if you have time.

*pants* OK, did I get everyone? If I overlooked you, I am sorry. I hope I didn't come off as too hard or anything, I tried to give constructive criticisms and some praise. I don't think anyone has any weak work but they are obviously almost all WIPS but that is when I know I want feedback, before it is too late.

Keep drawing everyone!

Dear conceptartists! Congratulations for all your entries!

Here's what I've made for this thread:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/caradecalcetin/japa.jpg

This picture of Shantall Tsukamoto was taken in 2024, before the death
of her husband Harold Kamehame, poisoned by the spies of the Beneluxgermafrance union.

She was educated to serve her husband because of the traditional japanesse
care for ladies, and after his death she imposed very severe rules about
mourning, and she was the first one to comply with them wearing black until the day of her death.

The fashion of the nobility of that year was a revision of the
times of the ancient queen Elizabeth, and not only that... Shantall also adapted the hard punishment for the traitors of the nation.

On this portrait made by David-david the third she is holding her stick of power: Each button ejects a quantic missile to a country which appears automatically there, she seems to be pressing the button of target-Spain,
so... Cuerpo a tierra!

David-david, the picture is great but it doesn't seem to follow the brief very closely... She has little of English (not to say Victorian) and nothing but the eyes of Japanese.

RES and Hurricane, I think you found both the right balance between English and Japanese traits as well as the hieratic and regal look of the character. Very interesting style too.

steve1138: Too early to give too much critique. I like the idea of the samurai mask. FINISH IT!

Any chance of a critique now Rogzilla? I know I said I don't have the time to do any more, but if you pointed out something, I may be forced to make the time...

Spitch great job on the face and neck painting part! Looking very promising. I do think the bottom half of the torso should probably be redrawn. right now it looks like she is kneeling, rather than stepping up the stairs. What do you think?

Rogzilla
March 24th, 2007, 01:56 PM
steve1138: Sure! The design is excellent and I am impressed the painting. The pose, however, seems a little flat. The pose does look out of something from Japanese art, perhaps statuary but then the color/value wouldn't match up. Try taking that pose, it HURTS! What you could do is add a background to it like a royal portrait, then it could be a fusion of the two artistic styles. A really good example would be the portrait of George V that you can find on his Wiki page. It is what I used for reference. Anyways, I gotta go put on pants, going to see TMNT today. I will try to do critiques for everyone if I can!

Oblio: Nice! It's maybe a little small right now the image, and her arms seem a tack too short. Just a little.

Ikuru: Hehe, she doesn't look like someone who has authority. Looks like a schoolgirl who caught a cold ;p

This is probably my final, I would have liked some more time to work on it but this was finals week for me. Alot of good entries and sketches this time too.

Anyway, any crits would be appriciated.

I think its a bit too technologically advanced, but with the alternate timeline I think there's some leniancy. I may see about giving some critiques later.

Rogzilla: Thanks so much for such a thorough critique! I'm really glad you liked the painting.

Regarding the pose, I was trying to make it slightly difficult if not impossible, reminiscent of illustrations of royalty on playing cards. I liked the idea of placing her arms at odd angles, but maybe it was too subtle to really hit the reference home. Should I have gone farther? I suppose it would almost be like ancient Egyptian figurative work, but with Victorian and Japanese already in the mix, that might be a bit too much. I thought about doing a flat-looking tapestry style background similar to that found all the way through Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but as I've said, I didn't have the time.

I'm ranting now, so I'll just say thanks again.

Thanks! :teeth:

Actually dragon, Im thinking she is a young girl who allso happens to be a enlightened warrior (so she doesnt have to be this macho woman to be a great Spiritual leader(most of the entrys dont really reflect that factor (spiritual leader that is)). But yeah, having that said, schoolgirls are in fact pretty HOT. ;)
And btw, I made a decent update (bag on p2)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Audit_chow64_Reine.jpg

i was going for the classic look; I figured 'black queen' sounded a bit gothic, which is basically victorian, so I went with it.

hm description..

Queen Hanako IX (House of Lancaster); an early portrait in semi-formal regalia.

The Shigata rulers of the GBNR (in)famously had their faces genetically engineered to resemble Noh masks, setting a trend among the population for cosmetic geneering which was a hallmark of that culture's stylised decadence. Hanako IX was particularly celebrated in this regard as the first generation to develop monochromatic eyes and unblemished, porcelain skin.

Hello everybody, I'm in with my Black Queen. At first I thought about a little bit old lady. But this option isn't very commercial... Finally I have hided his eyes with the helmet and it is difficult to know how old is she.
I think this concept mixes too many ideas very difficult to mix in a good way (english style, japanese style, futurism, a queen that is militatry too...) A little pain for my drawing it and I'm not very satisfied and as usual is almost impossible to find time to draw it but...well, hope you like it!!:bashful:

See ya!!

Crap monkeys. I don't think I am going to have time to finish this. I updated my first post with where I am now and I would LOVE some comments/crits on where I am now. rogzilla, the first thing that stikes me, she's really short! Like dwarfish. You should consider taking photoref, and if you cant, then google and find a bunch of photographs of stuff that resembles what you want to do, and develope it from there. Most people Use photographs, people like stephen stahlberg and john howe use photo ref... every time you look at a photo and "copy" nature the next time you try and make it from memmory it will look better than bfore.
Its Also great to take some modeling classes if you can.

since I mentioned Stephen, here is a good tut. from him about light and shadow and collor and so on...

Awesome! That will help tons! I just checked and yeah, she is a head too short! Opps! Looking closer, she is off balance! Crap! I can do much better than that! I have done life drawing classes before and could do draw from model and photo pretty well. I think I will have to go back to using photo reference for a while since I do seem out of practice. Again, thanks for the comments, it really helps to have someone else give you feedback cause they always catch things you don't.
