This is a character design I did for a friend's film project....

Do the things on his eyes read as gold coins, or orange slices? They are supposed to be coins, but they may need a bit of work....

looks nice, the "coins" looked like yellow glasses to me at first. don't make them too bright and shiny and place some symbols or numbers on them :)

Nice anatomy, I think that the brachioradialis of the forearm is moving a little more towards the hand holding the sword in that position. If you are moving your hand like he does, you can see the muscle changing under your skin, esp. at the elbow.
But that's not really important, I won't change it at this stage :) - the saturated edges are looking really good.

at first i thought lemon slices, but on the close up i chuckled because it is a cool idea to have the coins on the eyes, gives it that old school spooky feeling

Woo! pretty tight, good colors and contrast. At first I thought he looked a little stiff, but then, he is dead. He could be a little stiffer or off-balance, give him that shambling look. I do really like the visual contrast between the sweeping kilt and his super-tight anatomy/pose. I read the coins right away, but maybe making them a copper color or putting some kind of image would help them be more instantly recognizable.

Did you do any other work for this project?

yup lemon slices. some more rusty/metal texturing on them would help sell them as coins. His right pectoral muscle is looking a bit on the small side too. I like the arms and the thick neck.

OK, I have incorporated some changes: I think the coins are better, and I also added tattoos, which I forgot to include in the original, though required by the character description, I personally like it better without the tattoos....

BWK - This is the first finished piece I have done for this person's project. I will be doing more soon and posting some of them....

Cucaracha- I see what you mean about the arm. I may come back to that and make a slight adjustment....thanks.

And thanks to everyone else for the kind words...

I think the coins look a little better on the update, but I think they're too bright compared with everything else, they look a little as if they were glowing from inside...
I like this piece though....tattoos or no tattoos....I'm just wondering about the tip of the sword....it looks as if it's square instead of round.....was this intentional?
How was this done, by the way?, is it digital?

This piece was created by starting with a pencil and ink drawing, which I scanned and painted in Photoshop. Took about 6 or 7 hours I think.

The sword has a square tip. It is not meant to be a katana, but it somewhat similar.

I will experiment with toning down the coins. Thanks!

definatly looking better. I like the tattoos, and the coins look a lot less lemon-slice'ish.

I like the update better. The tattoos distract a little from the 'ripped' muscles, which is could be better or worse, depending on the concept's intent. Visually, I like them better as they create a unifying/commonality to the surface. Maybe the coins are too bright, but if they're darker, will they read as holes?

Japanese blade tips vary between weapons and time periods. The angled tip here is most often seen on the tanto (dagger) but I can't say that katanas and wakizashi's never had them. I didn't think "Japanese Samurai Zombie" when I first saw this anyhow -- should I have?

BWK- No you were not supposed to. The Guy who came up with this character specifically wanted it to NOT look japanese or samurai in nature.....

Nice figure...I bet your friend is going to curse you for all that fabric when it comes time to animate! lol...

one constructive comment - the coins on the eyes are really cool - but strangely the fact he'd be blind does not bother me at all - it's the question of how do the stick on??? lol - anyway, i think it would look cool if they were embedded right into the eyesockets and cheeks - like realy brutal monocles...or would that be duonicles? bionicles?... anyway - an idea to try....

Marc-

Good idea about the coins! I guess I was kind of thinking that he had a permanent squint that kept them in place, but it would be really sick if they were more imbedded into his skull! I like that, thanks!

Kickass piece here Mutton :) I always enjoy your unique way of rendering. I think you're on the right track with the coins, but I wouldn't embedd them in the eye sockets....traditionally, as I'm sure you know, coins were laid over the eyes by the deceased's family or friends to ensure they had money to pay the ferryman for passage over the River Styx. Embedding them into his eyes would take that away.....I think they still read even if they're held gingerly in place. What you might want to try doing is adding a bit of contrast, or dare I say ridges to the coins. Granted, ridges were used in manufacturing, so that might seem a bit odd. Or possibly trying silver instead of gold. That way it'd gel with the entire piece.

Either way, Rockin!

I thought they were gold coins but I think he should have lemon slices on his eyes to help with the wrinkles and lack of moisture. maybe an ointment tube or something in his eyes, i dont know. but he DOESNT have to be a victim of bad skin

SaltyDog - True, quite true. I think I will run it by the creator of this character to see what his intentions were: whether symbolic of Charon's payment, or something else...

Chewbacca - I think he needs an extreme makeover!

Looks powerful.
The girdle makes him look as if he's some kind of japanese sword himself.
Nice character!
