Here's some new stuff:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/SketchesCOW79klein.jpg

Some sketches for COW 79 Lava Swimmer.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Goblin4.jpg

Goblin Highwayman. Pretty old actually, but I still like it somehow.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/steamlocomotive3.jpg

Some concepts for a nucleair Steampowered locomotive for the CGchallenge: the journey begins. Never finished it however :(

Industrial Design sketch.

Lots of cool machine designs. The industrial designs are obviously the most finished and refined, but Orc stonethrower is my favorite posted so far. I always think the ones with interlocking bits and guts are the most interesting ones.

I agree with Crostar. The machines are by far the coolest Ive seen. I also like the Goblin and the robot on your first post. Cant wait for more. Also welcome the Sketchbook forum.

Something to consider on the toned paper drawings- it is super easy to get lured into using too much white, and it tends to make the drawing look amateurish (not just yours, anytime there's excessive white). Like, the highest value should be reserved for highlights, and the tone of the paper is already relatively light, so when you put that much white its like HIGHLIGHTS EVERYWHERE YAHHH. So yeah, just consider using it a little more judiciously.

the marker stuff and the ink creature drawings are a lot of fun. I really like the creatures.

yoitisi

McLean: Thanks for the comment, it's really helpfull. I often stop with the sketches at a point where I can judge whether I like it or not and where I can start putting in some color (with markers or otherwise) but it might be a good thing to shade them some more before moving on. A pencil might be a better medium for this than the fineliners I use though :P

Here's a couple of new one's (and one old one)

The more worked out version of a small thumbnail as seen in my last post:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Haycart1small.jpg

A robot done during lesson in which the students had to draw..well, robots :).
It misses a real focuspoint due to overdetailing of areas and the shadows could have been a bit more dramatic than they are.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Robotzoveel3small.jpg

Old one, perspective is a bit off here and there and the design itself is a weak version of a Ford Mustang, but I still like it.
Edit: hmm forgot to say it's actually a vacuumcleaner :P but where the hose connects is anybodies guess.

These are some awesome designs you have here. Do you have any interior designs for the vehicles? It would be cool to see how you visualize the inside, especially the last one.

June 9th, 2007, 04:45 PM
Dabaers: hehe I forgot to mention that the last one is a vacuumcleaner (it's a lesson in the third year drawing classes at our university). It actually doesn't really look like one I suppose :D Still, some interior designs could be cool yes.

Seaport: Thanks, I'll post some more soon. Right now actually :D

Asoir: The benefit of doing Industrial Design I guess. Thanks for stopping by.

Small update, did this one today while I should've done something else :D

Done from a photo I found on the web, took me about 1.5 hours. I should do more of these I think, I really enjoyed doing it.

Here's some new ones, from my vacuumcleaner-period I'm afraid. I liked drawing these since they have endless possibilities as far as design goes :P No serious its a lesson we give third-year students and I kinda liked doing these.

Haha yeah thats true. It wasn't ment to be practical I guess (since it'll never be made anyway). I was inspired by a book about classic cars with some really nice photos in it.

Wow, great imagination in your designs. You effectively mix well thought ot features (that would work practically) and nice cosmetic touches that make your work look cool. I especially love the way you draft out your creature designs. Keep it up man.

One thing I'd like to see from you is some figure drawings and maybe some more digital. Try pushing yourself in areas like that which you appear to be not as skilled in.

About time I updated my sketchbook for a bit. Thanks for the reactions so far :)

This one's for IDW 50: Maintenance Droid. Some thumbs and doodles.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Thumbssmall-1.jpg

These mixers are an exersize in drawing classes, the goal is to have a sheet full of idea sketches at the end of the lesson. Markers, fineliners, white gelpen etc.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Mixernblendersmall.jpg

Just your everyday truck. Markers, markerink, fineliner etc etc.

Time for a big update :) I realized I had a lot of sketches that I never posted in my sketchbook, so here goes. Order is not chronologic I'm afraid, but I'm not a big believer in the rule that your last work is best :P

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/EOW73SculptureGardenfinalSmall.jpg

EOW 73: Sculpture Garden on the Island of the Absurd. This one, like the next, are my most recent drawings.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/COW102SkullCollectorSketchColor2-2.jpg

COW 102: Skull Collector

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/IDW037MassiveExcavator.jpg

Old work, IDW 37: Massive Excavator.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Thumbssmall.jpg

Thumbnails for IDW 44: Galaxy Grand Prix. I never finished that round because of lack of time, but I had fun creating these ideas nonetheless :)

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/CHOW75sketch1small.jpg

CHOW 75: Deamonic Pirate Lord. Again, I didn't finish it but I still like the sketch.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/floatingbazaar46small.jpg

EOW 56: Floating Bazaar. It's a bit rushed and I'm not all that happy with it looking back, but it was great to play around with some brushes and textures.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/EOW53CastleChariotsmall.jpg

EOW 53: Castle Chariot (from the legend of king Arthur by T.H. White). A topic I couldn't pass up, but never got around to color it as the line drawing took me too long.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Livingtrap2small.jpg

COW 81: Living trap. Not such an original idea, but I enjoyed doing this almost completely traditional (except for the background). Markers, fineliners, pastel and pencils.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Lavaturtleklein.jpg

COW 79: Lava Swimmer. Again, almost completely traditional like the one above with only some color corrections in Photoshop.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Heartharvesterfinalklein-1.jpg

COW 78: Heart Harvester. Quite a bit off-topic, as it harvests a plant which only resembles a heart :P

The concept design you got here is awesome, love your line work most!! I always admire of the way of product/industrial drawing, it's clean, shining and elegant. I envy you have such a skill, and now you can adopt to any painting you want to do. What a monster you are!!:P

First of all, thank you for the crits at my sketchbook thread, Yoitisi. Really helpful and just what I need the most - critiques.

Now then, it clearly shows that mechanical stuff is what you're the best at. The few figures were not as good as the mechanical stuff. Though it doesn't seem that you are having lots of trouble with organic stuff, all those creatures look great. It must be hard jumping between mechanical and organic stuff.

About this medusa face, I suggest looking at yourself in the mirror to get the idea how it should look. The eyes are quite different in size, her left eyebrow is too high, sternocleidomastoid comes from the sternum and clavicle to behind of the ear, the mastoid process. Check the perspective also to see what features might be off. I hope this helps at least a bit.

I'll be lurking here.

Marioucci: Thanks for stopping by :)

UnSharpened: Thanks, it's funny how much of what I have learned by drawing industrial products I can apply on other stuff like creatures :)

razz: thanks for the comment :) yeah, I'm in dire need of practising characters and figures more. I actually used a reference for the head, but she had a lot of mascara on her face which obscured her features a little. I'm working on it now.

Carbono: Cheers :)

awesome stuff...I had a feeling from the beginning you were an ID person :P

what school are you at? I really love the lave turtle with the multiple fins....(why didnt I think of that?!?!) awesome creatures and as other have said you transfer from product to organic so easily! i have trouble with organic things, but am pretty comfortable with objects/cars etc...do you have any tips for working on creatures and such?

yoitisi
December 31st, 2007, 05:44 AM
Kakapoopie: I'm attending Industrial Design Engineering at the UT Delft, here in the Netherlands. It is a little more mechanical and technical than I like, but at the same time it pushes me in areas I normally wouldn't go. Also, I've learned a lot about drawing techniques here. As for changing from organic to product, I think the difference isn't all that big as it still is about form and shape and getting them on paper. Cross sections and basic forms are still applicable.

So, another update :) I decided I should update my sketchbook a little more frequent in the faint hope it would make me draw more...

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Interiorcarsmall.jpg

A car interior done for drawing classes a couple of weeks ago. I used an underlayer for it, as is often used in the automotive industry. Design is my own, the underlayer is just for perspective guidance. Markers and fineliner.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/CHOW100Medusafullflipsmall.jpg

And a small update on my Meduse entry. The human form is something I'm totally not comfortable with so it's a great exercise.

Apocalypse Rex: No need to be afraid, just try an IDW for once I say. It's a pretty good place to get comments on your ID stuff :)

So, a Happy New Year for all of you of course. After seeing some speedpaints of environments in Bumskee's SB this morning I decided to better myself this new year and do some speedpaints myself :P

I then got the idea of doing them daily, which knowing myself a little bit is probably not going to work but we'll see how far I get with it. It's a great exercise either way. I'm a little out of my depth here as I'm much more used to a fineliner or pen, so the first bunch won't be all that great I predict.

I have this wonderfull book with a nice landscape picture on each and every page of it, so the idea is to do at least one page every day, starting now :) (I started on page 66, it's got like 230 pages so if everything works out I've got a ton of paintings at the end of 2008...)

For now, half an hour each, two brushes on the first and only one chisel-like on the second. I'll probably switch brushes for the next few as I'm not all that happy with them yet.

Yap, Bumskee's SB is truly inspirational. Believe me it's definitely worth to flip them through, though now it's close to 100 pages.... goodness.
It's interesting to see you start your landscape project!! I am also fancy of a book like that....:blahblah:. Anyway, those paintings look lovely. You're surely get a lot from that.

Quick Sketch: Yep, Industrial Design Engineering at university of Delft. I'm currently 22, so I've still got lots of time to learn :) Thanks for stopping by.

^SlayeR^: Good to see fellow ID students around here :) I'm going to check out your SB for sure.

Dekus: Thanks, I hope to see much more of you in IDW. I have a soft spot for the Living Trap thing as well, as it is basicly all done with markers and pencils instead of PS which I'm a bit proud of :P (even though it appears a bit flat, especially at the back).

Unsharpened: I like strolling trough bookshops for good reference books. This one is actually a book about the best paths to walk through Europe, but it has some great images in it :) Not sure if I'll make it through to the end, but I hope it's going to be fun.

It's amazing how you can do both inorganic and organic forms so effortlessly and I think you combine both these very well in your fluid inkwork of the maintenance droid. I love the trees in the castle chariot image! I hope you get to colour it sometime soon, would love to see how you balance the colours with that beautiful intricate linework. The other industrial design concepts and creatures are of course top notch!

For the Medusa image, you might want to check the placement of the eyes, the one of the right(our right) should be pulled in a little more towards the left I think.

Slav: Thanks :)

DARAF: Glad you like it.

Davi: I saw you started your own speedpainting already, keeps me motivated to keep em coming. I also left you a link to a good site for reference on environments.

Collinsully: Yes? What age? :P Thanks for stopping by.

Iridyse: Thanks a lot for the comment. I'll try to fix the eye, I already had this suspicion it was off, but sometimes you need to hear these things from someone else before fully realising it :) That teaches me for using a reference picture with a model with lots of mascara on her face, it hides almost all features.

Hyver: Thank you :)

Matsign: Took me a while to get that last sentence actually..I need more coffee I think.

IanE: Hehe just when I thought I should quit drawing those vac's I got a project where I had to actually design one. Thanks for the comment :)

So, here's todays result. Exactly half an hour. I found the most difficult part is to match the colors, especially on the mountains in the background. I almost lost the time while working on them. I used a different brush this time, a home-made one with softer edges. Not sure if I should use more brushes for these things, maybe I should download a couple or something.

Bumskee: Hey thanks for taking the time to check out my SB :)

maxetormer: Thanks :D

ikuru: I actually never use a full grid, as I find it easier to just start and draw only a couple of guides. Only if the drawing is going to be huge I do create a sort of grid, as it's very hard to keep any kind of control otherwise. About that Medusa, well, it's killing me alright :(

First, here's an old one I came across while browsing through a pile of sketches. It was done out of frustration actually, as a lot of students in drawing classes made rather unimaginative coffee machines :P I kind of went overboard with the red though, and I had the bad habit back then to create a brand name for most of my ID drawings.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/SuccubusCoffeesmall-1.jpg

My Medusa entry is frustrating me at the moment. At one point, I sat back to look at her and was like: "#@%& she's smiling all of a sudden...where the hell did that come from???!" I've been working to get her face right so long I changed things I hadn't even intented. I'm so clueless when it comes to portraits and human anatomy :dead: I even threw in a mole for good measure...

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/CHOW100medusaeyecorrectionsmall.jpg

Right, I'm off to do something completely different this afternoon in the hope it'll give me new insights this evening. To speak with the words of a wise man: "%#&* it Dude, let's go bowling."

grenappels
January 3rd, 2008, 04:19 AM
heh, give yourself more credit on that medusa piece, you managed to make the hands give a good impression of hands with like 5 strokes. my advice would be don't overwork the face before getting around to everything else, that's usually what makes me super frustrated and give up.

grenappels: Thanks :) I expected the face to be the main issue which would give me trouble so I decided I should get that right first. Also, sometimes I spend too much time on the details, end up liking them too much and fail to see mayor mistakes in the main parts :P

I decided to give up on my Medusa piece, because to get it right before the deadline I will have to miss some sleep and I have other stuff that needs my attention as well. Holiday is over next week :(. I learned a lot though, first and foremost that I should do more anatomy studies, some self-portraits for example.

Here's todays and yesterdays speedpaintings. I think I won't post all of them in the future, only the ones I like best. It's not quantity that counts but quality after all. Half an hour still on each of them, different brush again. I don't really like the first one, as it lost some of its depth.

You work so hard even you are already so good.. respect:yayca:.
Just found one thing, is the sketchbook(the one with thumbnails) you got always so organized and clean? I am thinking that my little sketchbook is messy, thus an idea has come to mind that should one have several sketchbooks for different purpose. Anyway, just wondering how you organize you sb.:P

Cheers

Pixeltuner: Thanks :)

UnSharpened: I'm currently having a holiday so lots of time to draw, but I can only hope I can keep the pace once I have to get back to work. And yes, actually my sketchbook looks as clean as that although I did a little cleaning here and there. I don't think having different sketchbooks for different purposes is necessary, maybe just keep the pages ordered might help. I should scribble more on my pages as they are quite empty now you mention it :D

Marjolein: Yep, Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. Thanks for stopping by :)

I made a small edit to my speedpaints, I added noise. Yes, a PS filter. After seeing what RoboGabo does with it, I found it helps to blend the colors a little and suggest detail where I didn't have the time to add it. I think it works great on those 30min sketches, but I don't think I would use it for pieces where I have more time to work on as it does look kinda cheap I suppose.

Queery! Why did you want to study IO in the first place? Are you satisfied with what you've learned? Are you the best of your year? =D I'm aiming to study at the TUD next year, if I graduate. Hence my enthusiasm. Where's your artclass?

Really cool sketchbook.

looking great as always man.
love that coffee machine :D
the speedpaints are looking better and better, the last two pieces are very well done.
if you feel frustrated by the medusa piece just let it go for a while, let some time pass and then come back and work on it. it's very important that you feel relaxed while drawing. take a day off, have a beer and come back. the second day you might get some really good results.
keep it up bro, i'm on ya :D

Vigilandus: Hmm lets see if I can answer that :) I decided to study ID here because I wanted to do a creative study with a little more than only drawing and painting, as I like to fiddle with technical stuff as well. I'm still happy with my decision, as the art classes here are great too although they do not cover painting. I've learned a lot while being here, although it goes almost without me noticing it. I've spend the first 4 years doing only the minimum I'm afraid, as I found most of the exercizes not all that exiting. A pity really, as you have to find your own challenges which I'm only finding out this year :D Whether I'm the best of my year I don't know, I'm certainly one of the better artists of our faculty, which earned me a job assisting in art classes. You can't miss the art classes as they are on the first floor in the main hall. We've got four studios in all, plus a computerroom with wacoms. That enough information? :D

^SlayeR^: Thanks :) The problem with the Medusa piece is simply that I don't know enough about human anatomy, faces in particular, to finish that piece to my satisfaction within two days. I therefore decided to drop it and start doing some more basic studies.

Here's todays reapings. I did a second one today, because as I leaf through the book I always see a picture a couple of pages ahead I want to tackle soon as I can :) Different brush once more, I'm liking it so I might stick to it for a while.

The shine and curve on the pages are giving me some trouble getting colors and tones right, I'll have to find a better way around that. In the first piece this caused me to overlook the foreground a bit, as it misses a few details now :(

there is indeed somtehing wrong with medussa her face, you corrected a bit the third time, but still something is missing.
I think its the left part shape of her face, must be.. meer aflijnen, meer jukbeenderen.
and her chin (together with her onderkaak) a litle bit reduced, higher placed

Here I am again:P.
Thanks for you answer. The environment is getting better I think, I love especially the lake one, the green looks soft.
I guess the reason why I visit your SB often is that you're on the curve of learning to paint the environment, and by viewing this process, it can help me identify what should I follow in order to fix things in my work.
The colour you use is light, but the whole painting isn't blurry, which always bothers me in my work, could you tell me how did you do that?
My brush setting is hard round edge brush with 70 flow, opacity varies form 60-20% and other dynamic checked. Hope this would help you give me some advice.:yayca:

Sopor+Aeturnus: Thanks for the crit :) I might give Medusa another try, just to see if I can take it any further. I don't think I'll manage it before the deadline though.

Unsharpened: To avoid blurry images, take care of the edges :) Maybe some smaller brushes help as well, I work from big brush to smalller to get the shapes more clear. As for the brush settings, I don't really fiddle much with them actually. I usually put the opacity under the amount of pressure I exercise as I found that works really easy, and the flow 100%. Maybe I should try out some other settings while I'm at it though :)

Small update, nothing special but I decided to take out the Gouache I had bought a couple of months ago and finally start using them. It was a lot of fun, but I need a lot more practice for sure. 1 hour in total, drawn from life. The usual apple I guess :) The light changed constantly because it was a bit cloudy outside, and I need to learn to use my eyes better.

Royabear: Thanks and welcome to CA.

Chief: Cheers :) I'll probably post more markerwork in a couple of days as I need to finish a couple of assignments.

A small update for today. I did another attempt at the gouache, but it really isn't worth showing. I probably need to find a course or something nearby where I can learn that stuff with some guidance.

Half an hour again, almost all one brush except for the little rocks in the foreground. This one was harder than I anticipated, and I just saw the horizon is a bit at an angle. Need to watch out for that in the future.

I should talk less and paint more I guess :P

...and some more from this afternoon. It was getting dark outside so I decided to do some from reference on my computer. WW II tanks, first one is a Churchill and the second a Cromwell, both British tanks. Just a value and proportions study. 30 min for the first, 20 min for the second.

The last one is a self-portrait I did yesterday evening. At first I didn't think it was worth posting here as there tons of mistakes, but I figured I might as well, so that when I look back at this thread at the end of this year I can hopefully see some progression as I plan to do more of those :)

brilliant work man.Your design look intelligent, and the technique is excellent, really like the marker work...you blened traditional media of different types and digital, and the technique is really effective. You work is very strong in design, landscapes, painting and mech design, while you seem to do figure drawing a bit less.Try giving a shot at studying anatomy in detais too, your eyes look a bit flat in the SP...studying anatomy a bit more (its not bad at all, but just go into detail) could give you new interesting design elements too.

again, lovely work, hope you keep updating ;)

Jason Snair: Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I actually like the initial sketch way better than my 'final' rendering. Bleh, need to practise those more.

Slechtvalk: Thanks for stopping by :)

Mr. Gadbury: Thanks, human (or close to human) character coming up in a minute :) I think I'll start doing some CHOW's for practice.

Rampopo: Thanks :)

TheGnoll: Thanks for the crit, really helpful. I'm stilling working on my mix of traditional/digital drawings, as I'm not yet happy with it. I'm aiming a bit for a style like Andrew Ley. You're absolutely right about my SP, the problem is actually that I need a larger mirror :D I'm working from one that's a only a couple of inches in diameter.

Speedpainting of this morning. I ran out of time with this one, as trees are a killer with the wrong brush. The result isn't all that better for the extra 10 minuter it took me to finish it :( Have to do more trees with different brushes I guess.

You should check for some library books on WWII tanks. I've found a lot with nice big b&w photos for reference. Nice speedy with the single brush. I guess thats the limitations on one brush, but thats why you get between with one of each right?

Matsign: I've got a lot of those already on my harddrive :) A lot of those old WW II b&w photos are really great for practice, so I think I'll do more of them. I'll focus on my landscape book for the moment though. Not sure if I understand what you mean with that last senctence though...

Since this is the digital counterpart of my real sketchbook, I though I might as well upload a couple of pages from it here. The first one is the whole page of the pirate on page 2, I realised I'd never uploaded it.

The last post is brilliant. Just wondering are you not satisfied with the cartoon style you got in the Medusa piece? I think that's the style all your characters have, so maybe you can just try to colour with one of them, would love to see it<3!!

January 7th, 2008, 04:17 PM
Unsharpened: Glad I can be of help :) I'm indeed not entirly satisfied with the cartoony style of all my characters, because I basicly draw them all in the same view everytime. If you'd ask me to turn the head slightly I wouldn't really know where to begin. I simply need some figure and face studies to learn human anatomy.

Another update for today, I'm having way to much fun doing these speedpaints to stop :D Honestly, I should probably focus a bit more on things I really want to learn. Human anatomy is something I've planned for over a couple of weeks, as I subscribed for life drawing classes. I think I'll keep the environment speedpaints going for now, as I realised I learn from each one I make.

These two are done from photo reference, just trying to get the proportions and tones right. They're Belgian Workhorses, so their anatomy is slightly more bulky and muscular than your average horse. Half an hour/ 45 min each. I think it's a better exercise for me than those tanks, because technical stuff is something I'm already quite familiar with. Animal and human anatomy are the things I need to practice.

HunterKiller: Thanks :)

Todays speedies. I'm not too pleased with how the landscape turned out, partly because of the brush but mainly because the half an hour timeframe starts to feel too tight. I might add another 15 min to the next session, just to see how that works out. With the horse I tried to keep the movement and dynamics of the original image, which is actually quite hard. Proportions are a bit off here and there, and overall it seemed a bit flat to me :(

hey, wonderful inks you have going here, really nice linework mate! you have a great grasp on colour as well, enjoy the some of the subtle nuances in some of these paintings. Lots of fun stuff, enjoyed looking through here.

If I absolutely had to crit something, I'd say your brushwork and brush economy could use some more in some places. Don't know if you have Painter (looks like you're using photoshop??) but I keep thinking you might find thing more to your liking in Painter? Don't know, it just seems that this sort of brushwork would flourish more with a traditional approach (as with the gouache painting on the previous page). Just a thought.

hey man, im from holland too. really like your drawings. you learn that kind of drawing at tu delft right? or is most of it self thought? i actually doubted to go there study ID but didnt do it because i thought most thing you learn is super technical and not much the creative.. like for example entertainment design in art college in america.

Hyver: Thanks man, but killing me won't stop me I'm afraid :P I left you an answer in your SB, but I think I'll skip Dortmund. I should check out the Lounge more often to see if there's a sketchmeet somewhere nearby. Would be fun.

Duq: Yep I'm attending the Delft UT (I just found out that in English the letters are the opposite of the Dutch TU Delft :P)

Brendan N: Thanks for stopping by :) You're spot on, I use Photoshop while Painter would probably fit my style more. However, I'm one of those people have a great barriere against trying out other programs once they are used to something :D No seriously, I tried Painter a couple of times but couldn't really make heads nor tails from how the program works. I should try again I guess.

Teh Gosu: There seem to be a lot of Dutch people around here :D The way I draw today is indeed mostly learned here in Delft. Before I came here I was a scribbler by heart, and then someone forced me to draw straight lines on A3 format. Best thing that could happen to me :P It is indeed a rather technical study, but there's also alot of creativity involved. I kind of like the mix, although I do not like maths, physics and electronics all that much. Anatomy is coming up, I've subscribed for a life drawing course and I think I'll order me a couple of bridgmans books or something. I've not yet made real plans for the future, because I like to do both if possible :P

Ouch, once again I use too many smileys...anyway, here's a small update on my COW 106: Glacier Terror thingy. Pretty sure I don't have time to finish it, so expect a final rendering in a couple of days :D

Today's speedpaint. I expanded the timeframe to 45 min for this one, and I'm glad I did as this was quite a complicated on in terms of amount of objects and stuff. Quite pleased with it, I tried to keep an eye on my brush economy so it looked a bit smoother. Still, I need to learn to match the original a bit better as it's not all in the right place yet.

The second is another horse, again trying to capture the movement. I think I'll dive a little deeper into horse anatomy, I've got a very usefull book on the subject :)

No way man...those environments are sweet:D.
After looking back again your work, I found that they are much more like painting on paper rather than digital one, not only colour work, but also B&W one. And that's what confuses me. Do you feel like that you are holding a real brush when you paint on tablet? I think that's the feeling I couldn't catch.

The COW one is really nice...I can see what you called "confident" stroke in it.
No unnecessary line in it, at least I think so.

Hey yoitisi,

Thanks for dropping by my sb. Your pen work was the first thing that seriously popped out to me. Your line strokes are unbelievably confident but at the same time nice and loose. I really admire those sketches a lot. You got a fantastic technical side to all those drawings.

Your environments look a lot better from page one. Hmmm...I think maybe if your trying to get better at shading and blending digitally you might want to tackle a less complicated subject. I know I'm going to sound like a tape recorder machine here but doing something like a apple and working really hard on getting to look right can help tons. My theory is if you can make a realistic apple, you are just one step away from making a realistic horse or any environment for that matter. try to invest some time into doing one or two of those studies. One other thing, are you using a noise filter on your digi pieces? A lot of them are looking grainy right now and because of this I think the colors are being knocked back. Try to avoid those filters if you are using them, I honestly don't think they work well on any pieces.

I'm pretty sure your aware of this forum but I really did learn a lot from there. It good to see different ways of approaching painting digitally. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107217

I anycase, again your sketches are just fantastic. Keep up with the good work and thanks for running IDW. I'll see if I can get involved with those activities more often.

Unsharpened: I try get more into painting yes, so they might look a bit more painterly than my usual stuff :) Needs some more work though, as I should start blending a bit more I guess.

Quick Sketch: Thanks man :)

Trashy: Thanks a lot! Really helpful comment there :) As you can see on the last page, I actually tried doing some life studies in Gouache last week. I realised two things, first that I should use my eyes better and second that I need a lot of practise with that stuff in order to control it, so I dropped it for now. Still, I can do those apples and onions and stuff digitally for sure. Expect them soon :) You're damn right about that PS filter too, I was actually thinking the other day I should drop it because I got bored of it. Hadn't realised the color was knocked back a bit though. However, I think those filters can be helpful if you don't have much time and still want to suggest a lot of detail. Real grainy paper, cardboard or canvas have the same effect on traditional pieces, and I feel this is just the digital equivalent. Still, it might be better to just drop it for now. Hadn't seen that forum yet by the way, although I've seen people refer to it. Anyway, long answer but thanks again. Hope to see you in IDW :)

zou: Yeah I do Industrial Design. I've posted some info already in here, but before I start a very long answer, is there something specific you want to know? By the way, the stuff below is one of our projects here so you can get a glimpse of what we do here :) Moebius is way cool by the way.

So, no speedpaint today I'm afraid. Was back home too late to catch the last daylight and the lights in my room give only yellowish light :( I should get me one of those daylight lights I guess. Made some other sketches which I might upload later, but for now, here is a project I've been working on. It's actually for a course I dislike, not because of content but because it's given in such an amateuristic way...anyhow, as I had to work on other stuff and didn't have a lot of time for this exercise I had to rush it quite a bit. I still like the outcome, especially because Graphic Design doesn't come easy to me.

The first poster was made a couple of months before the last one, but they had to match in some sort of way. The photo stuff in the background isn't mine, but as it is for a school project I didn't think I'd get into trouble for using them.

The one above is actually a bit older, but I found it a couple of days. Color study with markers and pastels to create a sort of sunset effect. It was the last lesson for the first years, one of most fun lessons we give here :P

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/Planefunsmall.jpg

I got me some of Scott Robertsons books the other day, so I tried my hand at some of his exagerated airplanes. Not totally happy with the perspective and all, and pencil simply doesn't work well on the paper of my sketchbook :(

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/IDW56Sketches2colorsmall.jpg

And some more work on my IDW #56: Food Vendor Vehicle entry. I turned it into a Candy Truck. Had some trouble designing a cockpit that fitted with the rest of the form language, but I think I'll go for the top right one. Bottom left is a quick color study after the colorscheme of a truck I saw in a movie :)

Todays speedpaint. It didn't have anything in terms of foreground elements which made it a great deal more difficult to get some depth in there. Not very happy with it, but there you go.

I agree with you when you say that you see people making the transition from graffiti art to digital that they use softer brushes. I have seen that also amongst my associates. I definitely am taking your advice on the cast shadows on the ground and over lapping the figures. Thanks for reminding me. I just recently started taking closed notes of the shadows and feel that is very important for realism and 3d. I am on the anatomy studies indeed. They never ever end, lol. Lege1: No problem, you're on the right track, so keep it up.

ccsears: Thanks for checking my SB :) I did have a little time to work on the dinosaur some more, and I think I'll turn it into something more finished indeed.

Quick Sketch: From a single book I bought a couple of months ago, it's called "the most beautiful travelling routes of Europe" (I translated it a bit freely, the dutch title is: "De mooiste wandelroutes van Europa" if that is any help). It basically has a landscape picture on each and every page.

Gardener: Cheers :)

Here's a little update on my dinosaur piece. Hacking away at anatomy and shading. I found out that it is actually rather difficult to find out something of it's anatomy as the internet doesn't seem such a good source on this subject.

Might do a speedpaint tonight as well, but sunlight has faded already :(

Edit: Hmm I found the image has lost some of its contrast and darkness, probably because I calibrated my monitor yesterday...badly, so it appears :(

w00t! I made it into Jens mentorclass of color study and landscapes, so expect a lot more work in here the coming weeks. In the meantime, here's another speedpaint. I tried using a couple of m@'s brushes, as I figured I should try out some other brushes. Needs some more practice in that department as well :P Not entirly happy with the big rock as the shadowside is too much black which makes it look almost comic-style. 45 min this time.

Nice update:D. I see how correctly you comment on not only other people's work but also yourselves. Is the gray area which under the big rock some water flowing? If so, that's really nice interpretation of its transparency ;if not...well, it's still a nice painting! BTW, love your dino sketches, good perspective.

Unsharpened: I like the idea of myself reading through this thread in a year or so and see how much I learned :) The area underneath the rock should actually be rock with some green stuff on them, but I kind of messed it up a bit I guess...

Now for something else, as I got a lot of positive reactions on my ID stuff and I've just become Jens' mentee, I figured I should return the favor and start my own mentoring class. If you're interested in learning to draw ID related things, check here: Mentor Sign-up thread page 16 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1605926) somewhere at the bottom of the page.

Ooh lots of updates since the last time I looked :D Did you finish the Glacier creature? :D

Good going on the landscapes, about speedpainting though. Speedpainting and using M@'s brushes is something you do by simplifying your progress. But you dont get a good grip on that untill after you did some paintings that take a while. Or atleasts thats what I was told :D Speedpainting is more fun most of the time instead of spending 3+ hours on studies :)

Grats on becomming Jens mentee :D He is cool guy, and definitly very knowledgeable. I hope you will see alot of progress :D

Duq: I really didn't have time to finish that Glacier thing, I'm being buried beneath deadlines and things lately, plus I started as a mentee of Jens and started mentoring myself :P About those speedpainting, yeah I know, I actually did some landscapes that took me longer. The point is, it takes me quite long to get everything right and I wanted to get some speed in it as you said. Also, I need to train my eye on seeing and applying color.

Pomegranate: Heya, thanks :) Did you already see the mentor thread I put up?

So, here's the first of many for Jens' classes. I kind of messed this one up with the colors, so I'm going to do lots more :)

Also included a more refined landscape I did like 2 years ago from imagination. Just to compare it to the speedies I do right now.

always enjoyed your industrial design stuff, but your current speedpaint landscapes are particularly impressive. From a contrast standpoint the most recent one is more interesting because of your choice of lighting.

would be nice to see you work with clouds more and develop them past just swashes in the sky, make them look a little fuller. otherwise good stuff, i'm always impressed with what you have.

yoitisi
January 19th, 2008, 07:42 AM
GusTheRobot: Thanks for dropping in :) I'm rather pleased with that last one myself, although you're right about the clouds, they look underdeveloped.

3rd one for Jens class. I'm afraid I haven't got much more time to do a fourth. This time I focused a bit more on the clouds, and used one of m@'s brushes for it. Then I messed up the foreground a bit by losing some of the saturation on the rocks and because of a bad brush setting the trees look like they're doing the hundred mile an hour thing :(

My oh my~~these are aweeeeesome!
I personally think there are more dramatic light in your landscape in the recent post, though I am not sure it that because the ref shows so. Anyway, they look just beautiful. I love the canyon(?) in #127, the reflecting light on the rock is lovely:D.

Great job!!

yoitisi
January 22nd, 2008, 05:06 AM
Unsharpened: Yeah it's the photoreference that looks a bit more attractive than before :) Not so happy with that one in post 127 though, it doesn't really do the original image justice I think. The rock is too light. Thanks anyway :)

Here's the last one for Jens class this week. Managed to squeeze it in between work. Tried not to lose myself in the details too much on this one, but the reference was difficult to capture. The thumbnail works fine, but anything bigger and I see all kinds of stuff that looks off and wrong. Took me about 45 min/1 hour.

i really enjoy/hate it when art looks amazing from far away and good from closeup... it seems to be a common trend in ID sketching when really the objective is to convey a great image from across a room and nothing much else. In other news as far as that illio goes it looks to accomplish what it set out to do which is convey the idea of the environment, which is good. suggestions? keep working at it, your images are getting a little blurry, try to get those edges in order a little better.

sidenote: damn guess i missed signup for your mentoring thing. maybe next time that'd be a fun one to participate in.

yoitisi
January 26th, 2008, 10:43 AM
lord regenschirm: Thanks :) That one is my favorite as well.

woof: Thanks for stopping by. I do like that boulder now that I look at it again, it just isn't the realistic way I wanted to approach it with.

BohemianChaos: Thanks very much :) I'm practicing my digital stuff right now as I feel I can learn a lot in that area that will also help my traditional stuff to the next level.

GusTheRobot: Not sure if I get what you meant with that first line, but I think ID drawings do not only have to look good from far away and grab the attention, but in the end some of it has to modeled or build and with only a quick eyecatching sketch this gets a lot harder. You're right about the blurriness, I kind of hurried those last few. And the next mentoring thread I begin...hmm this one is going to last a while I hope :)

Here's a few scrap pieces I've been working on the last crazy week. Uni managed to set like 4 major deadlines in the space of about 1.5 weeks for three different courses :x First one is done, currently I'm working on an animation for this monday and then I have to write another two reports...bleh.

3d renders first, I'm not going to say much about those as it has a sort of unwritten NDA about it. Nothing very strict, and these renders don't really say much about the concept itself so I think showing them here is ok. Done with Solidworks in about a day from modeling to rendering. Just noticed the floor is a bit too low, luckily these didn't make it into the final report :P

288694
288696

The next are a couple of thumbnails I managed to squeeze into my schedule for the NVart challenge over at CGSociety. Nothing much to see for anyone but me yet I guess.

The Legendary Left: Will do :)

Finally I'm free of deadlines for a while, so I've got time to draw something for fun. I've made loads of things the last couple of weeks but sadly I'm not allowed to show anything yet. I was also stupid enough to try my hand at an animation last weekend, 250 drawings (nothing fancy but still) in one day is rather a lot :P. Shame the result wasn't really worth it, but I learned tons about making an animation so I might do that again someday.

For now, I tried to loosen up by thinking something up for IDW #59: Power Boots, but none of my ideas so far satisfy me. Boots and shoes are damn hard to draw.

I'm enjoying myself while drawing this after two weeks of crazy deadlines. The Art Crusades give me the opportunity to try out some character work which I haven't done in ages, the sketches for CHOW aside.

This'll be my character for any future headhunting I think, I've always had a weakness for the bloody mindedness and mushroom-induced giggling of the Goblin Shamans from the Warhammer universe :P

Here's the final for my duel with Pepps. I intended to have it colored as well, but went kind of overboard with my pencil and ended up with a pencil rendering that took me the whole two days. Might turn it into a painting later on though :)

Yeah some small meaningless drawings this time. Haven't had time to do anything substantial the last couple of days. The first two are done while giveng classes. It's sometimes needed to inspire the students to think outside the box :P the exercise was to get a couple of ideas on a way to transport groceries on paper.

299540

299541

Worked some more on the explosion for Jens' class, although it seems to be adjourned for the time being. It's a nice exercise to do though, so I'm going to finish it one of these days I think.

great sketchbook, a true inspiration you are.. those simple idea's you got down there of the transport bike thing, thats what this is all about. just everything you drawn there has a function. and the whole thing looks good. im jealous, thats something i still need to learn: form follows function.

5* from me

plz dont stop doing what you're doing man, see ya

PS. i tried your underlay now, but it seems there are 3 problems. first is that i cant see the lines properly under the paper, did you use a 'lichtbak'? second that im uninspired and simply dont know what to draw on it. third is my lack of 'draw through' drawing skills heheh guess that last thing is what im gonna work on. it seems i cant get to my creativity when it comes to industrial stuff. tips?

yoitisi
February 12th, 2008, 10:32 AM
Teh Gosu: Hey thanks for stopping by :) Actually, form follows function is already an old term as the introduction of computers and electronics sort of undermined that idea, but I know what you mean :P A year ago my drawing teacher said to me that although I could draw quite well, my designs looked like decorated turds (and he was quite right I'm afraid), so ever since I tried to first get a basic nice design before going into details. For the underlay, I indeed used light from underneath to see the image through the paper, but holding it against a window works just as well. The second issue is simple, just start drawing. It might help to design a couple of seats first though, as that is the exercise before the whole interior in my class. The transparent drawing of the shapes is just very usefull if you need to find certain points in space and all, but you have to get used to it indeed. Let me know if you finish anything decent :D

After my headhunter piece I felt like doing some more characters soon, and since things start to unwind a bit here I finally have some more time to work on my own stuff. Did some quick thumbnails with a marker, scanned them in and decided to paint over some of them.

301297

This is the first, more might follow. Took me about an hour I think, though I didn't really watch the time. Not really happy with it in terms of balance and composition, but I liked trying out working with full opacity on and picking colors by hand.

301298

Time to spent some time on my mentoring thread now :)

Here's another character piece I did for the Art Crusades. Headhunting with Wolfbane, although he appears to be on holiday still :P

I took his character and put him in the foreground (the one about to vomit :P) and used my initial character again. The topic was:

Danuh: It's actually hard to keep things from getting shiny sometimes :D

Anyway, small time update. Working on the next duel with Alti. Started out with a black silhouette sketch but in all the steps after that I was struggling with almost everything about this piece. Still a day to go, so who knows where it ends up.

318630

And some more mixers :P I liked doing these and went kind of overboard on adding aging and some texture to it. Never really finished it though, as there should've been some more mixers in there and a background but time ran out. Markers, pencils, fineliners, the usual stuff.

Dan Valkar: Thanks for stopping by :)

Here's the finished piece for the duel. The topic was:

player 2 (defender) : limitations of the flesh

A - metal is your skin, oil is your raw blood, the magics suited to slay mear men dent your plated chest as you heave through the masses. your hands as gargantuan clawed things buzz and crackle with their own energies, your mind forgets what it was to be a man, you are finaly free.

Those mixers are nicely rendered, you handle markers very well. You must be familiar with Doug Chang of Star Wars fame, one of my favorite concept artists. Your b&w piece for the duel turned out great.

yoitisi
March 8th, 2008, 04:46 PM
Quinn Simoes: Yep I'm a big fan of his work too. I have the book 'the Art of Star Wars' from film 1 on the shelf here :)

As I'm experimenting a bit with my process lately, I thought I'd save all of the steps I took while trying something for the IDW of this week. The following is not necessarily a tutorial, I just thought it'd be good to write out my own process and while I was at it, I thought I might as well do it in my SB :)

The topic is Deep Space Starfighter, with the restriction to take a couple of images and base the design on elements in these pictures (as in 'the objects photographed in the picture' that is).

320764

Step 1: I started out by gathering some inspiration from images I had on my harddrive. Shame I don't have all the links any more, but the fruitbowl and table come from www.architonic.com I think.

320766

Step 2: Generating ideas. Basically just doing quick thumbnails while keeping in mind what elements of the reference I wanted to keep. One important part I liked was the floater of the Grumman Duck, so I tried to base the thumbs on that. Nothing special maybe, but I'm used to creating thumbs with just my pen and paper, and doing this in PS was sort of new for me. Enjoyed it though :)

320768

Step 3: I wasn't too happy with most thumbs, but liked idea 4 so I decided to take it a bit further to see what happened. This step is simply blowing up the thumbnail to about 1500 pixels wide. Later on I realised I should've made it a bit bigger...

320769

Step 4: Generally working out a couple of important design aspects from the rough thumb. Punching out the shape a bit more already, and introducing a couple of details like the guns and cockpit. I'm keeping an eye on the values here, as they're most important to convey the shapes.

A thing I tried here that I knew about already but never used was creating path's in PS to guide my painting. Not sure how much I like using them, as they tend to prevent some happy accidents I think. Then again, they also prevents some very unhappy accidents.

Working in color from the beginning is fun but most of the time I find I missed stuff in the shading of shapes. This time I had the same problem :P

320770

Step 5: Working some more on the shading, basically giving it a bit more contrast all over and adding some details. Cross-sections are often more helpfull in a perspective view, but even in a side view they can help to explain the shape of the starfighter.

320771

Step 6: Again, giving it some more contrast by adding stronger highlights and making the shadows a bit darker. Most of the design is now more or less clear. Time for a background.

320778

Step 7: Adding a background :) I played around with some of M@'s brushes, as brushes are another area which I want to explore more. I opted for a muted red, as it contrasts nicely with the blue of the fighter.

320779

Step 8: I realised I should've checked it earlier: the grayscale version. I find this really helps to find out where the shading is off and where the shape isn't defined enough. Here I found I missed a quite important cast shadow, the one in the middle just before the engine exhaust. This is curved inwards, and should've a nice shadow.

320780

Step 9: Added the shadow, played around with the enginebay and exhaust (and not liking it very much...) and straightened out the front pod because I found the curve didn't really fit with the rest of the design.

320781

Step 10: This is the final piece...for now :) I decided to flip it as it reads a bit better (left to right, front to back) and added a nametag.

As far as conveying the concept goes, I think it is fine. I'm not happy with certain things in the design, like the weapon system and the wings at the back, but I'll leave that for now. I can always paint over it if I like. A bigger issue is probably that I should've played a bit more with the shading as I feel not every shape is clearly defined (very important in a flat view like this). Back to the drawing board I guess.

I just can't help falling in love with your ID drawing man, sorry about that:P.
And the last tutorial is awesome, though I got some questions here...How did you handle those tintytiny detail such as those thin holes on it, and did you use fineliner before going into digital?
BTW, love #187 the mixer, it's epic (not sure is this description right for ID stuff...:P), 5/5!!!!:D

yoitisi
March 9th, 2008, 07:56 AM
Hive minD: Hehe np :) Hope to see you next week in IDW then.

Unsharpened: Thanks man :) To answer your questions, the tiny details are just done by going in with a 1 pixel hard round brush (which might resemble my fineliner drawings I guess). I also added a bit of text on the midsection, and some texturebrushes from M@. I didn't want to use a fineliner sketch on this one as I tried getting out of my comfort zone for a bit.

Little update on the design, I played around with the weaponsystem mainly. Added a nosecone with 4 lasercannons and a rocketlauncher in the forward pod. Bleh, on to the next one I guess :P

Here's a WIP of a hotrod I started yesterday. The sketch has some errors which I hope I can correct while rendering it. Markers, fineliners, pencils and soft pastels on cheap gray paper. Been a while since I put some effort into a single drawing like this, I almost forgot how much fun it is :P

Hey brother, I have to tell you, you're blowing my mind with this stuff... I love the looseness of your style, you've definitely inspired me to get out my markers!! Love the step by step, love the car drawing, even your blender is sexy! The only thing I want to see more from you is work on your characters. I have to admit that going back to Loomis and Hogarth has helped me out with gestures and faces. (you know, the usual heads hands and feet.) Bumskee's posts inspired me to do timed drills, you know, like 2 min a gesture, and do like 100 of them real quick.. I think they help you to visualize gestures on the fly, and I've noticed that I can record what I see in the real world more effectively, so my mental library of anatomy is getting stronger...just food for thought, you're bad ass enough to get there your own way!:hatsoff: Thanks again for your support. It's always a pleasure to see what your up to!

337486

Garble Swan

The Garble Swan can be found in the marshes and swamps of the second moon of the Arghlgl system. As it has got rid of its direct competitors in the food chain with its hideous appearance and smell, as well as having scared any carnivor that hunted it -the famous restaurant critic Le Gaston once descibed its meat as a combination of blubber and string, after which it dissappeared off the menu in the entire galaxy- the species is now tumbling down the Darwin ladder of evolution out of sheer boredom. The sound it produces, originating from air canals surrounding the cavity in its chest (the wings fell off from uselessness), sounds rather retarded and weak. Mating calls are often only answered out of pity by the other sex. The species seems ready to die out pretty quickly.

The next three images I made right after the workshop. Inspired by a method Koshime showed us, where you take one image, flip/twist/transform/overlay it madly until you get a new image you can work with. I tried it on his tablet pc at the workshop and failed misserably, but this bunch worked out pretty well I think.

Your ID work is crazy to see in real life. For some reason hand drawn pen never gives you a full effect when scanned and displayed on a monitor. It looks really juicy in real life :) That process koshime was talking about applies to all things, not just ID. It's really useful for me, because it allows me to think more about shapes, and less about wanting to render :)

Fragmentedchimp: Much to learn in that area still, but thanks.

MattGamer: I forgot, but it was a cool topic. Might've been Slash who came up with it.

Here's some sketches I did this sunday at the Zoo in Rotterdam. I was there together with Merlin and Teh Gosu, was cool to see them outside CA :) Had fun doing the sketches, I think I'll go there more often.

I might have to figure out a better way to approach it though, as some animals tend to move about quite a bit which makes finishing a sketch kinda hard. I need to apply a bit more technique I suspect, as some of these sketches are kind of hit and run. Working with pencils might be a first, but the paper in my current SB isn't really receptive for that medium. Anyway, here they are:

yoo guido,

nice updates. its kinda weird i've just seen you draw those animals, now i see them here ;P they look good man good job. im to much of a coward to upload mine, they really suck haha.. your comment about my bad proportions, really kicked my butt. thanks! that was just what i needed haha i'm practicing life drawing last couple of days, i feel i get more of a grasp at nailing proportions.

your speedpaints are pretty nice, but i really think you can improve here.. i think your colors in general are too saturated. and you should try getting an atmosperic effect by having less value in the background. also be aware more of the big 'black and white' composition. i would advise drawing some landscapes from photoref or something.. just try to match colors... really fun.

see ya around
