Your brushwork adds a lot of dynamism to your work, but your values make the pieces seem cramped. In the nov. 3rd one, I think you need to tone down the saturation of that tree limb behind the girl, and the grass beneath her. They're the same saturation as her clothing, and she's getting lost in them.
I think some refinement of your edges would be nice. Everything melds together as it is now, which may be what you're going for, but in its current state it approaches abstraction. It makes it a little harder to decipher, is all.

those last speedies look great, i especially dig the green one, the grass, textures, colors, sturation, awesome.
however, your stuff always tends to look blurry, you seem to use too much soft brushes or not enough opacity; also run a sharpen filter over your painting from time to time in the process or after finishing it, it helps the crispness of the image.
apart from that, maybe do some landscape photo study, i believe jens got a class in the mentoring section where they focus on that topic -> http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115932
also check out forms environmentoring section, there's a lot of knowledge stored there about color, perspective, architecture, design and all that good stuff. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=140
keep practicing :)

hi towarlock, i really like the mood of your paintings and your linework is also getting better and better
just a little advice at the end: i think you should keep more an eye on the perspective of your images..its a bit off in a lot of cases and disturbs the overall feeling.........it's just a matter of spening some more minutes to draw some guidelines, so take the time :yum:

Salut Towarlock! You've gone a long way since your first
posts on Café Salé. You're getting less shy at contrasting
values, and your faces are gaining expressivity.
I really dig the pictures on post #11, and I like when you
go semi-abstract as in post #41 or #32 - you could happily
mix realist stuff with abstract backgrounds, or the other
way around.
Keep it up, and maybe try simplifying shapes when casting
the colors and lighting at the initial stage.
About anatomy in your latest work, since you asked for
critique here we go: :)
The flexed leg looks too short (the knee should go higher)
or, if you want the leg to be somewhat extended forward
the perspective of the boot should be adapted.
The other leg looks almost vertical although I have a feeling
this is not what you wanted.
On the left arm (right for us) the forearm looks longer than
the humerus part.
The neck has a strange shading.
But you also got a lot of things very well rendered on that
character. Cheers!

Dude! Less dodge/overlay/burn/multiply and more painting! Seriously D: It's hurting you. Try painting directly in color, I know it's hard, but it teaches you way more. Like that artrage piece a few posts back, see how much better it looks when the strokes are consistent? :)

I love how you push the texture in most of your colored pieces. Your choice of color is wild and matches the mood of your textures. Watch out for the over saturation and digital trauma in your darker pics though as some of the black areas are swelling in some of them. Your portraits keep getting better and better. As a crit, I'd say gain more confidence with your pencils and do some more figure drawing or gestures.
It was a pleasure browsing through your book. Very imaginative and energetic. Keep it up!

hey towarlock! your portraits are really good, you've really managed to capture the mood of the person in each one i've seen. i think you need a bit more practice with colour though: try keeping your palette fairly small (e.g "blue and brown", or "yellow and red" rather than "blue and green and red and yellow and purple!")
sometimes your colours are too uniformly saturated as well.
this tutorial by prom is great, might be useful to you:

October 4th, 2008, 09:41 PM
Wow. You've got some really dynamic pics. :)
I think you go really dark, almost black in places and that flattens your pictures.
Also sometimes the saturation (or dodge effect) is a little to heavy, I think.
If you could probably balance the effects better with actual painting I think you'd really be on to something. Your last studies are already pretty much like that.
Hope that helps. :)

Nice sketchbook! Love the pencil portrait in post #102
I'd recommend to study your compositions and expecially your color palette more carefully, though. A composition doesn't have to be super-complicated to be interesting and colors don't have to be super-saturated and bright either. Tone things down a bit and see the difference. Sometimes, less is more.
Oh! And pay more attention to your light source. Its kinda hard to define it in some of these pictures.
Hope this didn't sound too harsh. You got lots of potential :sungod:

Hey sweets. These last ones are pretty good, but don't be affraid to go a lot more opaque! Work more with form and less with layering, that way you get a much morecomplete sence of depth. When you have got the foundational shaoes and forms down, then the fine touching can be done with less and less opacity:)
Anyways, great stuff here, keep working hard!

first i must congratulate you i really like this sketchbook :)
and i think your experimental stuff is really great 2 piece of advice whatch out for color and value perspective , what i mean is on the background besides being more blurry than the rest of the composition as also less value variation on the other hand the foreground has more contrast in terms of value and has more warm colors than the background that is usually more cold...just some friendly tips ;)

Very cool characters and brushstrokes! They give your images a really nice mood.
The 3d objects in your paintings look quite flat a lot of times though, that's usually a problem with the contrast of values

indigartistic
January 30th, 2009, 04:14 AM
I think your work has a lot of style to it but in all of the works featuring object or people, it kind of falls apart.
Instead of really understanding how the face moves or the forces of a body, I think you are mostly drawing tones.
Instead of trying to draw a nice face, try to draw a face that has lots of movement and draw the forces in the face.
I don't see much improvement in the faces to be honest.
Like many many people here, I think it's better to spend more time understanding what you're trying to draw or paint and less time making nice things with Painter ;)
Just sit with a pencil and think about what you are drawing.
How it moves, where is the weight and force behind the movement, etc.

after i don't think same you about art maybe for some point so it's difficult for me for make now and why i make that or not why this way..., i make many style too cause i need change for found one evolution

Supsup towy!! I think the landscapes in post 244 and previous post are fantastic, i agree that landscapes can be abstract and really like the compositions posted in 244, there's even a great mood established in each of the shots, as well as the slanted horizon adding movement. Only crit here is to apply some composition rules, like distant objects are more desaturated and less contrast, objects in perspective in alignment with vanishing point, overlapping of objects to show relationships to one another, and the list goes on but majority of those things help to create depth and in a landscape or environment i think that's one of the hardest things to capturing that spatial awareness.
I'm really liking your abstractions and inspired off ur landscapes, keep them coming!

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook.
I enjoy your pencil studies. Hope to see more!
I agree with indigartistic.
I've noticed there is a common issue among your pieces with color saturation and intensity. Not that I should be able to speak since I am also guilty of it, but I thought you might benefit from it.
You're using a tremendous amount of black on your colors. Many of your digital pieces suffer from extreme usage of over the top dark shades to very light tints. The only exception is when you're painting skin tones do you use any mid range values. Instead of primarily using black you could explore the other ranges of the colors you've been using in future pieces.
Oh and I am not here to dismiss the style you're working towards (rather I find your style to be quite interesting and I encourage you to keep moving forward).
Keep it up :)
