behemot5:....one method I use is start a small thumbnail about 4 inches by 4 inches. When a form starts to crystalize or a see a good start on a thumbnail.....I scan it and print it out larger to about 11 inches in width and 20 inches in height. I place trace paper over it and start adding in detail. This is just one method.
Another is that I just immediately start on huge pieces of trace paper and just start doodling(which I use more often because it saves me time from scanning and stuff).....The reason I use trace is because I can draw and erase a million times on it and the paper will hold......the eraser won't eat the trace away:)
Most of my Mech drawings are "based" on real machinery and actual animal forms but it's good to play around that. I usually play a movie with anything that has a lot of mechanical technology involved(but not always) for inspiration....like this piece for example I started watching Citizen Kane, ( I know...really weird but I never saw the movie in my life)....hahahahah....
i think 90 percent of my drawings or the time I spend on them is observation and study.......
this is just the way I work...but I'm pretty sure that too will someday change. I almost expect it to change and I don't expect anyone to work like this......find your own niche or whatever makes you comfortable.....when you find your own way of working, let me know.....cause I'm still learning a lot from the artists on these forums!!!!

thanks a lot for this explain...my way of drawing is a little bit different... i drawn little pic the redo it on a larger sheet paper...but i never look books or movies...it's probably the reason why i don't have a lot of idea :-/

I love this design. My favorite part is the frame of reference you've used. That little guy standing buy the foot makes the Mech actually look bigger. Good job!!!

love the design, but the block shapes (shadows?) under the raised leg are confusing. id get rid of them, or have his leg resting on something. i especiall like the feathery textures to your backgrounds, ive noticed them in several of your pics.
Citizen Kane rocks! :D

This mech is so amazing!! The design is really sweet. The rendering is so bad ass. Its actually believable. I dont like when mechs are designed without the proper armor, but this thing looks indestructable. Great work. :D :D :D

Really nice, man. Some crits:
The white edges on everything might be lighting, might be paint flaking off. Sometimes it's hard to tell. If it's paint flaking off, then maybe have less of it. If it's highlighted rims, I think you've got all the edges of equal strength brightness and that doesn't make sense with a light source coming from one direction.
Also, I think the surfaces not in shadow ought to have a lighter value.
Great job, man.

Two things. One, I am glad that I discovered this site and I have no doubt that ya'll can help me become a better artist. Two, that Mech is FREAKING COOL!!! Armed to the teeth and ready to take on the local bad guys! Keep up the good work!
