Hey guys, this school year has been something else..preparing for my senior thesis and all, but I'm real excited about this post because I think I'm finally heading in a direction concerning my work. I'm not sure if it's a good direction but at least it's a direction right?

This guy I did for self-promtion. It is the most technically involved piece I've done. I started out in pencil and brought it into digital. I'm happy to have learned the beauty that is switching from Painter to Photoshop in this one and am most likely going to use this method from now on.

107025

This one was a commission for a book cover for author Perry Stone Jr. It's in the bindery now, so I'll update with an actual final cover with text and a pic of the book. Still, there's something that I'm not feeling with this one, so I hope you guys can point me in the right direction. I'm going to let it rest for a while, and tweak it when I'm refreshed.

I really enjoyed this one! The actual character is a 3d render from a character that I fully designed, modeled, rigged, blend-shaped, textured, and lit in Maya. He's actually a self portrait from an animation lip-sync I'm working on. I figured since I spent so long developing him that I might as well make a ill with him. The rest of the image is Photoshop. My first 100% digital image.

I hope you guys tear these apart! Anything helps. Also, I want to thank the community for constant inspiration. This site is amazing!

peace,
Francis

love the graphic vs painterly elements in the first - funny you said that about painter to photoshop -Ive been workin more and more like this too...doing the "painterly' stuff in painter of course and then off to photoshop for all the graphic clean work...the really fun part....
I love all that detail in the back, the opposing diagonals, the graphic treatment of the hair - beautiful stuff
Only crit I have is that his left arm seems a little big and its a little too straight and stiff? Maybe more definition in the folds to give it more shape? Cause it's probably the most dominating shape in there..

I love the variety and contrasting types of elements of the third alot but as a whole I think theres too much cluttering goin on and the composition suffers...
I would make the bird silhouettes a bit crisper too...

the 2nd just feels unfinished and I think its cause the drawn parts look more like areas that need to be painted in rather than done on purpose..I hope that makes sense...

EDIT: BTW - your first post here on CA was pretty kick ass too :)

The piece where you couldn't figure out what was wrong....I think there's too much going on in there...the real main focus point is the guy in the middle and my eye is drawn all over the place, skimming his expression quickly. Would rock out if he stood out more but hey, it's what the author wanted right? Glad to hear that you are finding your niche in your art work, most important thing and amazing feeling...

Kudos

These are beautiful, I especially love piece 1&3. I don't think any thing's wrong with with your book cover, it's just kind of dull right now. Maybe you can make it more eye-catching by rendering certain figures more with a sculptural lighting and use some more color contrast.

All of these are amazing, the only thing you should change is the design of the angel-guy's sword, the handle looks really thick for the blade.

that first one is sweetalicious, really well done
would like to see it a bit bigger to take a look at the girl also...think this would look great in oils

the second one just doesn`t look finished for me, perhaps that`s what you also feel^^

Hey guys, thanks alot! for the warm response. I've really enjoyed making these pieces and I get real excited when I get to post them at CA.

I also added a detail of the first image and a Maya screenshot of the last. If anyone is interested I can post a progression of any of the images. Just let me know!

Tessilago: Cheers, thanks!

Rascar Capac: Yeah, Painter is something else. I've been a Photoshop guy for a while but Painter really opened up my eyes to alot, and since this technique is used by many professionals theres has to be something to it right? On the left arm: I made a conscious decision to make it real stiff to contrast the arc of the hand but I do think some bend would help as would some more definition in the folds. This was the first time I used that sort of brush to make those marks and I got a little to excited! haha I agree what you say about the 2nd piece. I originally had the angels rendered out but I pulled them back because I was struggling with them taking away the main character the whole time plus my reference wasn't too great. I might go back to the rendered versions and just turn down the saturation and put some of that glow around them very subtly. Thanks for the crit and the words!

Stark: It is a good feeling to finally be getting some cohesiveness in your art. I'm more inspired than ever to make some art. Im hoping you can elaborate on your eye wandering around the 2nd image. Is it because of the color, the figure placement, or lack of contrast in the main character (all problems in my opinion)? Thanks for the words!

Theo: Thank you sir!

Djohnston: :P

Orifice: haha thanks

Kaktuzlime: cheers!

2100: "sculptural lighting and use some more color contrast" I agree, especially on more color contrast especially on the main character (did i use especially 2x). Thanks!

spotfrog:You are very right. haha That sword handle is huge. I never even noticed that. He might as well fight with the handle than the blade since it is so small. Thanks for pointing that out!

guterrez: "would like to see it a bit bigger to take a look at the girl" Your wish is my command. I agree oils would be cool to apply to this a la Jon foster style.

z!Nk: I apologize but my spanish is not very good. I'm working on having my girlfriend translate your comment for me. Thanks though for stopping by.

I hope this can prove useful to my process, or lack therof, I admit it's pretty haphazard hahaha

The piece originally started off as a study of female figures, mostly from the golden era of film or pinups. I was looking at that drawing and realized I might have something so I decided to make an painting from it. It just kind of got a life of itself after that. I used painter mainly for the background to give it a sort of wall texture and the final image has a multiply layer of a old paper texture I found to give some variety. The tilted angled ones were just so I could work on my female character better (my girlfriend... how they put up with us artists I dont know). Again hope this helps!

Really fucking cool man. I can definitely see your influences with that personal piece but I can't hold that against you, it's a beautiful piece. Not only that but you really learn from your influences, especially when you put their techniques or style to the test. Good stuff man, I can't wait to see what's to come in the future. Thanx for showin your process too, it looks like you really had a lot of fun with this one!
