Drumroll please here are the winners in this challenge according to Kemp 'Steaktron' Remillard. I will give critiques a bit later on this week. Let's get something a little more solid down for the next one. Final tally is Seattle 3 Vancouver 2 w/Seattle coming in just ahead. I have a feeling that this might've gone to Vancouver if Tag had posted his final before today... sorry about that Eli. Who wants a rematch with things more set in stone? I'm up for throwing down again on another topic.

As I am offended, vancouver, you must win for me and my homeland. I will not participate, even if raizor has lured me with his butter chicken recipes. You shall not see a great work from baruka. I was also preparing a prize to be involved in my next adult movie, but you will not participate. You will regret.

Let's start gathering the list of artists that are interested and start throwing around topic ideas.
RND 2 is going to be run a bit differently. 3 black and white thumb nails due 1 week after spec, color passes a week later, and then 2 weeks for polishes. (that's being generous btw) We'll go for a one month deadline but deliverables must be met to keep in it. If you fail to deliver on time you're bounced from the competition. In the end everyone should have something portfolio worthy.
On an added note, for those of you that put very little time and effort into your last piece, that crap isn't going to fly this time. Much like the COW's I will not take a piece to poll that's been half assed. If you put in the time and effort, it will show in the end and I know damn well that there are plenty of professional artists at each groups disposal for crits and aid. This might just be me, but I'm not sure why you'd participate if you weren't in it to win it. No excuses Seattleites or Canuckleheads, it's f'ing on like Donkey Kong now so you're either going to bring it, or get owned.

Not to sound like an unreasonable bastard but I'm burnt out on sci-fi. I just got finished spending the last 3 years of my life doing allot of sci-fi work. To be precise I designed 32 mechs, 8 characters, 7 creatures, 4 logos, and 5 weapons and then illustrated 7 interior pieces, 1 book cover and art directing 142 more pieces of artwork for my book coming out in June. If this competition goes for anything sci-fi I am volunteering to judge and do some scouting to get contestants.

hey! this sounds interesting: round 2!!
I'd like to know more details on diz.. im starting last month at school so my schedule is fuuudged! BUT if subject really catches my eyes (no sci-fi).. then FO'sho!! i'd like to put more effort into final render, i agree with rules.
adding btw, lets not make it toooo open ( just monster) lets get some juice on this, and maybe.. people put on vs maybe have same subject? that way we compete directly with design!! =))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))!!!!!!

March 29th, 2007, 01:01 PM
how about if we make a compromise. Knights aren't considered sci-fi are they? How about if we do something about medieval times, could include ogres, dwarfs etc...how about it being a battle scene, between minimum 2 combatants...what do you guys think?
I'd love to draw some kind of fantasy thing like that,as long as we don't go too crazy with the fantasy stuff, and keep the content a little more grounded in reality. For example, maybe,no wizards using magic spells battling a dragon...more like a knight fighting a troll with brute force and sparking metal...I don't know if this makes any sense, but in my head it does.:yayca:
peace yo

Would anyone be down to do this as a multi-round topic where we design our heroes, villains, and environment, and then pull them all together in one illustration? The topic would take a total of 2 months to complete but everyone should walk away with 2 or 3 pieces that they can put into their portfolios.

April 1st, 2007, 04:02 PM
So what are you looking for? Full turnarounds for char / villian and isometrics for the enviro? Would that production work be part of the stages for the competition and the final image that encapsulates it all is what is judged?

Before I begin, weekly deadlines are not flexible. If you don't make the deadline, you lose the round. Challenges will continue and final scores will be based on cumulative win totals and the point weight each round holds. If you try to enter a 30 minute sketch as your final during any stage of the competition, you will be disqualified.
ROUND 1: HEROES (20 pts)
Week 1 and 2 will be the 'Hero' design. Each contestant will be assigned an artist that they will be required to critique at the beginning of each week.
Week 1 deliverables will be a few 3/4 character roughs. The round will start on a Monday and end on Thursday. Crits will last from Thurs-Sunday and final revisions begin on Saturday once all crits have been posted.
Week 2 begins immediately after week one is over You'll present your final 3/4 front, 3/4 rear character on that Sunday for voting which will occur during week 3.
ROUND 2: VILLAINS (20 pts)
Week 3 will be your villain/villains. The same format will be followed as the Hero round.
ROUND 3: ENVIRONMENT (20 pts)
Week 5 and 6 will be environment thumbnails. Each contestant will then be given 2 weeks for final environment presentation.
ROUND 4: ILLUSTRATION (40 pts)
Week 9 will be illustration thumbnails and roughs. Week 10 will be rough final progress confirmation and week 11 will be final due date.
Illustrations will be completed using the winning design work from each competitor in each round. I.E. Contestant A beats Contestant B in the Hero round, in the illustration round both contestants will be using contestant A's design in their final.
Questions, comments, concerns?

I'm considering opening this one up to allot more people than just the Vancouver and Seattle crews now.
Verithin: I'm going to guess that you work in the video game industry, yes? It does seem like allot of work, but it's not. It's a joke, it just requires you to put in 45 minutes a day (lunch break) over the course of a week to produce a decent end result.
2100: The idea is that the illustrations will have the strongest designs in them which should help make a more powerful piece not to slight them really. For guys trying to break in, or those that aren't getting allot of work this will be a good opportunity to get exposure and grow a bit as an artist as well.... and there are allot of those types of people on the boards.

Nah man, I've worked in Film, Television and Games but I'm self employed (work from home with my 20month old running around the house) now and am constantly juggling projects. I have a few other weekly competitions I'm in, plus some personnel projects and paid gigs. If this was a one off illo I'd be in it in a heartbeat. Down the road when I just have one / two gigs lined up I'm in for sure.
It's just raining right now... and when it rains.
Sorry man, I know overall its not a tonne of work... but you add it up and I just can't do it. Just don't wanna drag the challenge down eh? Wanna make sure that if I'm in it that I'll do Vancouver proud. Next one for sure!
Thanks for pushing though... that's why I want to be a part of these.
Have fun everyone!
