Alright, Ive been looking at the Square Logos for Final Fantasy and Unlimited Saga and I wanted to know how I can duplicate Yoshitaka Amano's masterful gradients here are some examples(the one at the bottom is of Karolina from Marvels Runaways. Its a different effect, if you could help me achieve this one as well, that'd be awesome):

Well you could do it 2 ways
1- do a gradent on a layer then put another layer ontop with a white background, then draw in black and ether change it into a mask or go to select colour range with black and delete it (or draw with the rubber :))

2-do a pic with no background (tranparent) then CTRL+R-CLICK the drawn layer that will select all filled pixels on that layer then fill your gradent on this then put a white layer underneath

Hope that helps :)

Man, just do a white Background and put the gradient layer above above. Then mask it, put your draw on the layer mask and it's done :D
Ops... Kainin alredly said that u_U I'll post anyway

or you could just keep changing the color of a large soft brush and click away?

yeah its most likely a gradient with soft brush strokes of different colors applied to it/them. no big trick man. - JAG

setting your layers to "screen" (gradient fill over your art) can achieve this look but making channels of your line art will make this technique very easy to duplicate since you wont have to worry about white "halos" around areas that you delete. much faster than actually brushing over your line work.

You could also draw the shape, in black, in a layer, and on top of this one, paint on a layer which has the previous as a clipping layer (a group). In this way you wont have any painting outside margins. Of course, you can draw a shape and click preserve transparency and paint on top with a large soft brush.
