Wow!
I've always been following your tuts in the sculpting section and its good to hear you finally have a dvd coming out.
I've never sculpted....but who is to say I won't be able to do it with practice, right?
I think I'm going to pick up this bad boy.
Btw, how long is it? From start to finish, including the two mini lessons?

This one is really well done folks....Petey shares a ton of his secrets...and it will help even 3d artists looking to understand sculpture principles as well. The same stuff applies to 2d creature design as well. Great stuff....

i.was.ink: It's 2 hours 11 minutes long in total. It has everything in there to get you up and running. The only thing missing is the painting portion which deserves it's own DVD. (coming soon)
Qitsune: We're just waiting on the final proofs from our distributor. Once we have those we'll release it.

Nice! I am definitely going to buy this one. I had one scuplture class about three years ago but didn't really learn much. After I get this DVD that will most likely change. :)

One question:
Will there be another video that covers the making of molds? Or does this one by chance include that part of it all?
MassiveDVD
March 15th, 2007, 03:27 PM
magicgoo: This one does not cover making molds. We're considering covering that subject as well as sculpture-painting in future releases.

Will it ever be possible to download these releases? (after paying for them of course). Physical media is so last millenium, and it's not like dvds make it hard to pirate the stuff that's on them.

Stinkywinky: Downloadable content is definitely something we're exploring :) Don't hold your breath for Petey's DVD, however, because it won't be available to download anytime soon. Other upcoming releases might be a different story.

meh, im just a purist, but i think physical media etc etc has a sentimental appeal. but by all means if a downloadable versions will get more ppl to buy then do it. gotta support the community.

I ordered my video on 3/24 and received it 3/28. I'm watching it with my 11-year-old daughter (she loves sculpture, especially with Sculpey). I especially appreciate Peter's outlook on the balance of skill and persistence -- it mirrors what I've suspected for years and what I try to teach my students today.
Even a casual review of the video reveals some incredible insights into the art form. I'm sure I'll have more to say after several more viewings.
Thanks, Peter, for making this! (Please do a biped next!)

Just wondering if a dvd of the making of that would be possible.

Love the dvd! Is there anyway you could give a list of the materials used? For example the 2 component silicone used to make the texture stamps? I've been looking on the internet, but there are so many different kinds. I've used liquid silicone rubber before but I've never seen a putty style silicone...
Thanks
Peter Konig

Hey McPhish...glad you liked it...
The silicone putty I use can be bought from Douglas & Sturgess in San Francisco. It's called Siliput. I believe they have an online catalog and you can mailorder. Thanks!

I just got this a few days ago, and I have to say it's pretty awesome. Something I've found really useful for helping clay stick to armature is coating the armature in some kind of non-porous glue (like gem-tac) or covering the whole armature in floral tape. Both provide a tacky surface that holds the clay and prevents it lifting off of the wire.
I was really disappointed that the dvd didn't show the baking process. I wanted to know if the entire stand could be placed in the oven.
I've worked in polymer clay for years so I know how to bake things, but it would have been great to see how someone else did it. I was also disappointed we never got to see the tail hole filled in, or any sort of paint/colour added.
Don't get me wrong, I don't regret the money I spent on it, just wish it had been a little more complete :)

I am pretty sure he chucked the whole thing into the oven...anything that won't burn or melt at 250F will do just fine.

I figured he would, as baking it standing or something might mess up the feet. I've made something similar myself but I'm not convinced it will fit in the oven with the sculpture I'm putting on it! better go measure that...

November 2nd, 2008, 07:11 PM
Yeah...it really depends on the size of your oven. I think that Mr. Konig uses a pizza oven...I believe I read somewhere that he brought a used pizza oven so he could bake large pieces.

You can also make your sculpt with removable sections (using joints in-between them) to get it to all fit in a smaller oven. Just use pieces of small hollow rods (one slightly larger than the other so they'll fit into one another) for the joints, propoxied to the armature. Create a separate stand for the extra pieces (try utilizing the joints if possible) to keep the sculpt up.

Hi Mirana
Yes, I've recently started to do that more. I am building armature for a dragon right now and the wings will be separate, and I just completed a griffin with removable wings and just one other before that. So I'm still learning a lot, it makes armature building a lot more complex! I've been doing them with brass pipe/tube of slightly different sizes so that the larger can be imbedded int he clay, and the smaller can slot in and then be filled over with epoxy.
I did have problems with the first in the oven because I didn't make a separate stand for it, and for the griffin wings I didn't really need one (as I baked them about 5 times each and placed the already hard or not yet worked on surface on the plate) and that worked out fine, but for this one I will definitely need a stand :)
Mirana

Cool. Extra stands don't have to be very hardcore anyway so you should be fine. Good luck. :)
