Heres a piece that Ive been working on for about 2-3 hrs.
darkchild
March 7th, 2007, 03:49 PM
Your Self portraits seem to be getting better in terms of proportions. Your rendering still could be improved (but of course thats why we draw consistently). My main crit for your pencil rendering is that it IS inconsistant. I can tell when you really get into it. For example, your studies of the hand features wonderful tones and midtones..etc. But some of your other pieces looks like you're still rushing. Slow down and think of how you want the subject to be lit and approach the shading from a logical standpoint. Now rendering with a ref will almost always yield correct shadows than rendering from your head, but that comes with practice. The monster has a good start but there is very little variation in your tones. Sorry to be harsh, don't take this in a discouraging way but rather a kickstart to your new SB:) Keep the excellent concepts coming!! I'll be looking forward to your return to sketching!!

March 7th, 2007, 03:54 PM
darkchild- thx for the boost of confidence and the kick in the ass to keep going. I know, Ive been rushing on alot of pieces and youre totally right about the way to shade from my head. Thx again, and nice to be back into sketching. Ill keep up the sketching as youll do the same.

March 7th, 2007, 04:50 PM
To go along with what Darkchild said about your rendering, it's really clear where you broke your strokes. For example, in the monster's shoulder I can see how you rendered it part way and then separately rendered the other part.
Try to take each stroke fully across the form you're rendering. That way these "breaks" won't show up. This isn't so much an issue in your self-portrait though, where there isn't quite as much of an obvious stroke direction.
All in all, though, nice start to a new sketchbook. The linework on the monster's hand is absolutely killer, in my opinion.
Glad to see you sketching again!

Hey man what's up, I like the zombie, I think studying some anatomy would really help you. I'm sorry I can't give you too many tips of how to do that since I'm struggling with that myself too right now.. Anyway, keep posting :)

March 9th, 2007, 07:08 PM
iMaiM- Thx man, plenty more where that came from, will show that one if I finish it.
Coen- Hey man, long time no see. Good to see your posting again tho, and thx for the tips, been studying anatomy on and off for a while. Just got some Cavardi Books from the library, so ill be posting some up soon.
Small update, sorry guys. Some figs from characterdesigns.com. About 1 1/2 hrs work.

New SB :teeth:
Good that your mother is better and you are back to drawing. Latest figures are looking nice, but why didn't you draw the feet? I am looking forward to more anatomy studies from you. I suggest not to concentrate on rendering so much then, but more on learning about the structures and function and try to remember as much as possible. Your concepts from imagination are sometimes lacking in these terms opposed to your reference drawings. It's something i have to work on more too. If your underlying basics are not convincing then all rendering won't make it better. And for the portrait you should be thinking more of the facial shapes.
Thanks for ongoing support and i hope this helps somehow. You did improve since your first sketchbook in here, latest figures are especially good.
Keep sharing

Hey sorry I haven't visited in a bit, but nice work with the last post!! Good lines and simple renderings. Keep up on those studies. Your zombie dude looks pretty cool. Maybe refine a bit. Try to draw some multiple poses of the same concepts. Choose one that you like and draw a finalized version. Spend a bit more time on it.

Sarcophagus- Thx for visiting and for the C&C.
Sonaj- Thx man, the reason I reason I didnt draw ws because I kept meesing up, I had taken some sleeping pills and got really tired so i kept messing up on it. Thx for the crits too man.
darkchild- Thx man, no worries, as long as you come by every once and while. Ill be trying those multiposes out as well.
Artacon- Thx for the C&C dude.
AK86- Thx, be more to come.
Another figure study from characterdesigns.com. The girl took about an hr. The guy took a couple of minutes. I still have a lot of issues to work out on my porportions and line quality.
Anid Maro
March 10th, 2007, 04:47 PM
Yeah, you've still got a few anatomy/proportion issues, but over the last four sketches they've decreased dramatically.
This last sketch page, in particular, is pretty good.
With the lady, her head doesn't quite look right (I think it's a bit small...) and her left breast looks kinda saggy while her right is more perky. Either breast on their own looks fine, but they look strange placed together.
Otherwise though, she's looking good. I really like how you did her hips and legs.
And the guy, for only spending two minutes I think it is damned good. Nice job carving out his form with shading, though maybe you went a bit too far in on the right side.
Keep up the work, and I hope things go well for you personally, what with everything that's happened and all.
Envisor
March 10th, 2007, 09:54 PM
Anid Maro- Thx for the tips man, I seen the problem with the left breast, was going to fix it when my niece and nephew walked through my door, theyre only 3 and 6 years old. By the time they left, I was too lazy to fix it and just decided to post it. As for the head, I didnt see that until you pointed it out to me, thx again.
More figures from characterdesigns.com. About 45 mins all together.

March 11th, 2007, 03:54 AM
Hey nice work with the pose on that last lady sitting. Start adding a bit more rendering to your work. It doesn't have to be high contrast or anything. Even the lightest shadows and highlights will add that extra depth to your work. Keep up the work!
Envisor
March 11th, 2007, 05:31 PM
darkchild- Thx man. I aim to please. Ive been wanting to get the basic outline and shape/proportions right. But I'll be using more rendering soon.

March 12th, 2007, 12:20 PM
Nice SP. You successfully placed that expression on paper! Very nice. Try going over your work with a softer pencil. You'll finalize the lines and give a darker tone at the same time. Try to do the lines in one stroke for a non sketchy look. This portrait is a great improvement to everything else leading up to it:) Keep the progress flowing!

Good job with those figure drawings. I like this page http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=106063&stc=1&d=1173585238
Try using fountain pen. It will force you to put contours with just single strokes and the drawing will look much cleaner.

Crossdress Theater?!
Anyways, the rendering technique with the monster orc guy in the second drawing is nice - but it's better to take into account which direction you want those hatchings to go! In some places like the hand and face it's working, whereas the shoulder it's not working so well. They are the same direction and flat plane (even tho' flat planes are good) and they just don't explain anything.
Keep workin' it ~
darkchild
March 14th, 2007, 12:46 PM
Very nice last two posts! The legs (her right leg especially) are a bit mishaped on that lady with the sword. I don't have the original to compare but remember that sometimes the curves and angles are very slight and only requires a bit of accentuation. I always catch myself making the curves more curvy because thats the way I translated it onto paper. But less is more. All the attention to detail will come together and form a great image. A good example is the portrait you posted after:) Keep on it!
Envisor
March 14th, 2007, 08:45 PM
Mirrows- Thx man, I'll try my best to meet everyones liking.
Naomiful- Crossdress theator just came into my head, dont know why tho. Thx for the crits. Ill be working through till I get it right.
darkchild- Yeah I know, the curves are off quite a bit. I need to get more control of my lines, Ill be working on proportions more to get that right. Thx for the crits and comments.
Wierd goblin and a take at creature design, supposedly a teenage dragon. Might make a character out of him one day.

U really are the starving art type arent u? another sketch book? not that there was anything wrong with the last one, but hey shows dedication.
I like the fact that your attacking the anatomy subject once more, and your getting there bit by bit, the pencil rendering on your last few looks so fundamentally cool that they almost look like photographs a bit. (Yes im being truthful) there are a few itty bitty wrinkles to iron out but your getting there fast, dont' worry :D

Hey Man! Thanks for checking out my SB. You have got a great start here, and you'll be a fine addition to the incoming class here. You've done a lot more study than I ever did before I got here. Which is really good. Just get ready to work your ass off and be prepared to lose a lot of sleep over homework. You wont declare your major until the end of the year so.... just keep an eye out for people going into the same major as you, and get to know them. You'll be spending all your time around them for the next 4 years haha. Oh, and never feel hesitant about asking upper classmen for advice or really anything. Keep drawing! I wanna see some updates! Great stuff

Hey there!
Great brand new start here. You show some great improvement in figure drawing. Self-portraits are always frustrating but very rewarding after you've done like 20 of them.. What my teacher told me 15 years ago was to practice making caricatures if i want to be able to make good portraits. And he was so right. Maybe an advice you could use as well?
I like the Troll really much, maybe you should go and try rendering it with colors.
Good place to hang around here, mate.

It seemed that I couldnt unlock my true imagination even when I tried to draw by myself, I sould get this awesome piece drawn out in my head and then when I tried to draw, the image slipped from my mind and I drew what ever came from what lines I had on the paper. There are some interesting rhythms in these studies http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=111989&stc=1&d=1174614215. To get more out of them I would say to look at the various shapes you've created, postive and negative, notice the character of each. Then look at the contours, and ask yourself which could be made straighter, which should be rounder, which should be wobbly, this will help you pack more info into your drawings. As an example look at the chicks jaw, it's just a straight line. The basic contours of the jaw are the masseter(probably spelled it wrong), and the jowels. Sex and age can be controlled with just those two lines. Big square masseter for males, hanging droopy jowels for old folks.

The latest is looking good. I have to say though, some of your character poses and expressions are pretty static. The pose in your newest one is great, but the one before it is just standing straight with hands at the side, kinda boring. And in both of those the facial expressions are lacking.
Not to say you aren't improving, you are. Lots.

Sorry for the delay, newphew was up for the past couple of days. Been playing video games with him. Got a good sketchy of him playing GTA. I know, bad game for a six year old. But hey, its all that would keep him sitting long enough for a good sketch. But he still moved a lot, but I think I got a pretty good likness.

Nice SB here. The characters feel real solid and the rendering is nice. I did notice that some of your people feel a bit off balance, as though they might tip over. Try drawing in a perspective plane for the ground to help you place the feet on these and I think it'll tighten them up. Keep it up.

Nice one, that drawing of your nephew. It's not easy to draw children....
Have you tried activities of the week? I've only recently started posting entries there and it's a lot of fun. Also it would be cool to compete against some one I know hehe well not personally, but you've been checking out my sb from the beggining and I'm also rather familiar with your art... It would be interesting to see what you could come up with! Come on, give it a go!

You're making real progress and you have a good eye for musculature, man. What I think would help the most is if you try to stop feathering your lines. Put your whole arm into drawing, make your lines simpler and truer. Make them flow!

Good progress on your sketches here, theres a definite difference between the first ones and the last. The pressure of your pencil lines are more varied, making the shading better, and your sense of balance in the images has improved. Keep it up! ;)

First is my mom, she doesnt like me to draw her. So the only time I have is when shes sleeping, I had to work fast because she starts to feel like someone is watching her and just stays awake for the remainder of the day. But I showed this one to her, and she actually liked it.

Good progress in generall.
For your latest figures, you have to watch not only for the right length of body parts, but also how your mass is balanced. For example one of these guys looks like he would fall on his back very soon. You could check out some of the stuff that mentler has in his sb, i saw some of the coolest handouts about gravity and balance there. Rendering and line quality made big steps mate. Keep it up

It's not the rendering that will help you but the knowledge of planes and construction for example http://fineart.sk/photos/loomis_heads/TN_029.JPG http://fineart.sk/photos/loomis_heads/061.JPG
http://fineart.sk/show.php?w=60
I See anatomy problems in some drawings then i see them fixed in drawings below just keep pushing your self and dont fray away from reference. you still have tons to learn same with any other artist the learning never stops. Hey thanks for swinging by my book. So here I am in yours. There is progress along the pages, but I agree 100% with seth1. I myself need to get serious and work on my anatomy studies, but here I am drawing transformers. Just keep pushing and really, there's nothing wrong with using reference to learn. Just train your eyes to remember what you're referencing and your hands to make it happen on the paper.
Oh yea last sketch shows great form on the upper body, but it gets lost from the hips down.

DANG!!! your first few posts are really shitty... but this stuff on this last page are definitely way more advanced!!!! then i looked at the dates and this has only been a couple months!!! your improvements from one month would usually take someone a whole year to discover!! .....dude you have a gift
you really need to watch your spacial relationships with your faces, for instance, where are the eyes in relation to the ears, or the nose in relation to the mouth.... etc... experiment more with different sketchbook mediums like pen and ink or charcoal maybe even different kinds of pencils, or perhaps try using toned paper...
do more studies from life!! the drawings with your hand are VITAL and definitely working to your advantage... do some more self portraits that will help with your "faces" problem... you cannot correctly draw from imagination unless you have studied it from life!!!
keep sketching your doing well... at the rate your headed... DAMN!!!

Your life drawings are great, all sorts of bumps and subtleties of line,I think you should put the majority of your time into them. One exercise to do would be to start a sketch from your mind then to finish and elaborate it with stuff from life, from other sketches you have done, and from photos. You had a 2 hour drawing from your mind so why not one from life?

My suggestion is to push values further, stress construction as a process itself instead of thinking of finishing anything.Show us how you build you figures so that we can help you better. And don't forget lineweight, it can add a lot to a sketch. But really, at this point you just gotta keep pushing.

You're just going through a difficult time mate but please don't give up on drawing like Darkchild 'cos that's what I did and wasted so many years....And now I wash old ladies' bums for living heh
Anyways I've got something that helps me get through bad times. It's the song called seek up by dave matthews. It goes like this this:
Sometimes I feel like I'm falling
Fall back again, fall back again,
Fall back again, fall back again
Oh, life it seems a struggle between
what we see and what we do
Well I'm not going to change my ways
just to please you or appease you
Inside a crowd, five billion proud
willing to punch it out
Right, wrong, weak, strong
ashes to ashes all fall down
Look around about this round about
this merry-go-round and around
Well If at all God's gaze upon us falls
it's with a mischievous grin, look at him
Forget about the reasons and
the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
our emotions can be swept away
Forget about being guilty
we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
I don't know why but these words somehow made me feel better a couple of times...
Well, wish yoou good luck mate and hope to see more of your drawings.

Hope you get through it all okay, man. Glad you're not giving up on sketching, 4 pages and your progress is plenty obvious to me. :P
