Hey all, forgive me if this isn't the right forum for this, I just need a little bit of help.

So I am a college graduate who is hoping to solicit himself to various studios in hopes of getting a job working in the art department but I lack something I know I will need. A portfolio. Honestly, most of the work I did in college I don't like because I felt I had to end up whoring myself to the teachers instead of doing what I wanted to. Sure, I have some works I think are pretty good but I don't know if I could include them in a concept art portfolio.

So what should I include in my portfolio? How many pieces? Should I go for only original brand new characters of my own creation or do my own interpretations of current characters? Is there any particular way to organize it? Some one please help! I have a lot more questions to ask but they will come as these are answered.

PS-I went to school at a "fine arts" college cause I got a scholarship there...I wish I could have gone to somewhere that I could have majored in Illustration...what a novel idea! :-P

Rog, the first thing that you need to do is learn how to do some research into where you go digging for information. If you can’t find the right part of the forum to ask such a question, you’re going to have a hard time finding a job.

Well that is exactly WHY I opened with that first line, isn't it? I am not certain because things are not really clear. Yes, this seems MORE like a conceptart.org support than just a place for general support...however, if that is the case, then I would hope someone would help me on conceptart.org by, oh I don't know, pointing me in the right direction to GET THE HELP I NEED. So yeah, if this isn't the right forum...PLEASE DIRECT ME THERE!!! It isn't clear from any of the descriptions where I can go to seek advice from people in the industry, is it? I mean, if it is clear to you, please enlighten me. Honestly, I don't appreciate the attitude and came here for help, not to be derived for not knowing which forum is which.

Take a deep breath, Rog. The last thing anyone wants to do is help someone who is yelling at them.

You should read the stickies at the tops of the forums and some sample posts to get a better idea of what goes where. A request for portfolio help would be best posted in the Art Discussion section, or perhaps the Lounge, or Fine Arts, Studies, and Discoveries. If you use the search features, you will find that your questions have been asked and answered by others many times over – and those posts can help you out. Lastly, if you want help, you need to be more specific about your career goals. What art industry do you aspire to work in? There are many.

FYI, I’m “in the industry”, if the games industry is what you are looking for. My initial answer to you wasn’t glib. It was what you needed to hear, if not what you wanted to hear. As a professional in any art field, you need to be able to do basic research.

If you are looking to get into the games industry, there is a link in my sig for you.

Thank you, these are exactly the answers I need! I now know where to redirect my questions. I didn't understand how this forum worked, what did what, and all that. I am sorry if my response came off as snarky itself, I had just woken up and hadn't had my coffee yet. Now I am at work and can direct my frustrations at the people who broke a working printer trying to fix an already broken one!

And game industry is something I am considering. I am torn between film/animation/game. In truth, I just want to be working on anything where I can be telling a story visually. Thanks again for your help, I will repost my questions when I get home! ^_^
