I got a graphire 1 a while ago for 40 bucks factory refurbished. I was thinking of getting an intous 2 (4by5, since that seems to work for me) and im wondering- is there that much of a difference? Has anyone used both before?

the intous will have 2x as much pressure sensitivity than the graphire. thats about it i think..

What is even more important is the tilting ability of the Intuos. It will give you the chance to work all Painter-brushes properly. You´re quite hempered (e.g. with the marker-tools in Painter or with the palette knife) if you haven´t got this ability. So take the Intuos - it will help to improve.

Pencil... check out eBay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=Intuos) for a used one if the $$ is an issue. You can get a pretty cheap first generation 4×5" Intuos on there usually. It'll be serial instead of USB (drag), but it'll have all the sensitivity & tilt. I still use one.
