Took me an obscene amount of time to pump out that Jungle/cave concept, would anybody have any tips on vegetation?
Envisor
March 15th, 2007, 11:03 PM
Thx for the reply in my sketchbook. Nice cave youve done, on vegitation, Id say to look up lots of refernece pictures and mix them together. Thats what I would do at least.

March 15th, 2007, 11:37 PM
Like envisor said, definitely look at references.. something you might find in them is that vegetation is not so much random scribbles, but there is pattern and form in it, especially repetition! Use that to your advantage and for your composition ~

I think you got a nice overall mood going but what Naomiful and Envisor have said holds true. Study up on your vegimatation! Grandmaster Feng (http://www.fengzhudesign.com/) has a good tutorial on his site for ze veg.

Alas, no tips on vegetation... but the lighting looks awesome! I love forest-like scenes with that sort of lighting. They're quite peaceful and just draw my eye to the image.
Thanks for the comments on my Sketchbook, btw. :D Very appreciated!

Thanks for stopping by my sb. Like everyone else said get some ref for the vegetation, or anything that you don't know what it looks like. Just use it as a starting point. It will lend credibility to your images. Let's see some more stuff.

Hey Smokey!
Looks like a good start on the new piece. The jungle has a nice feel to it.
Still i think its cropped to an odd size, a little to wide for the subject maybe that's just me.
Keep on painting, use reference and dig out those crazy ideas in your head.
Cheers!

I like the stingray, but my favorite is the jungle. Have you played around with creating a further away glen to give it some more depth?

HI,
I really like picture manta and Junk. GOOD JOB
some idea for you
- for manta maby you can add some shadow of manta go down in wather (no strong)
- for Junk maby they are too much detail in the air. I cant read bottom part of picture, maby add some detail of building or car or what they are to recognize place.

All the color studies are great. I love the landscapes and, like I said the wave was one of my favs. Love to see some larger still-lifes' with more than one object. It sounds weird but challenging for you. Sometimes I've turned my bedroom into a studio with my shitty laps for lighting.

Hey Smokey! Nice work. You're doing pretty well with the referenced stuff, and your apples look tasty. I dig the water, too... I suck so badly at water. How do you do it?
There is one thing bugging me about some previous pieces... The stamps. (or defined brushes... Y'know what I mean.) Like, with the trees and stuff. Try giving the impression of trees and grass, or something... I'm not sure how to do it, because I haven't really tried it, but give painting them individually a go! :D
Keep going, man, 'coz I'm subscribing. ^_^ Woot!

Simple. Don't use the attachment manager.
Upload on an external host and use IMG tags.
But it's far easier to use attached images, imo.

hey Smokey,
About the speedy on post 103, get rid off the gray-ish triangle on the foreground because I believe you wanted the mountain in the background to be the focal point and this sort of triangle is quite distracting.
I really like the shapes on the sides and they work well as foreground. They seem like remains of an old forest or something, very organic.
I'm not an expert in composition but I hope this note helps you a bit :)

Impressive speedies! Your colour choices are sweet, and I like the variety of your content.
As for the pic in post #103, I agree with Shehaub. It seems to be missing one focal point, my eyes went all over the picture. It's an interesting concept, though, hope you'll do something more with it.

Here's some sketches, scribbles, and a study or two. I have more, but they're studies of other artists work and I'm not sure they'd appreciate me uploading them.
I'm trying to upload everything (apart from the aforementioned subject). So there's some seriously dumb scribbles in here.

Hey, your colors look good. Your drawings, however, need some work. One suggestion is to see your paper as a 3d space. The bridgman book talks about that in massing. I'll reread that section and try to learn from that if I were you. Don't worry about tacking on tons of details at the start. One thing about drawing is that you have to know the shape and form of the object you're drawing. If you don't, you can't expect your viewers to pick up what you're trying to draw. Play with the simple shapes and try to put them on paper from different angles and viewpoints, then go from there. Once you know the basics, it'll translate to your colors.
Shehaub
April 3rd, 2008, 06:52 AM
I like your Bridgeman studies the best out of this last group.
I think it is a good habit to keep putting ideas down like you have been with the landscapes/environments/figures even if you don't plan on doing any further with them. Keep the "What if.. ?" moving. I let myself get locked into "Only draw/paint what you see" and its been a struggle to find that truly creative side of me that wanted to learn to draw in the first place.
Keep going!

EvilBunny: Thank you. I understand what you're saying with my sketches, they all look very flat and my understanding of 3d space could sure as hell use some work. I'll have a ton of perspective and shape studies done soon, so check back later :) By the way, do you have a sketchbook?
Shehaub: You're a long stander in my sketchbook, I can count on you to give me a good crit or just a pat on the back when I update, I hope I return the favour often enough(that goes for everyone), I've been reading up on your blog and your sketchbook, It'd be nice to know you some more.
I'll some more bridgeman done soon as well, look out for them.

Thanks Jamesy, check your sb, threw some love your way.
Right, I've been reading alot of Judge Dredd again latley, and I've been inspired to attempt a public transport concept.
I'll take this as far as I can, but my knowledge of tech and vehicle design is limited, so I'll put what I have up now for some viewer analysis. I know it's very simple at the moment, but I'm trying.
I'm thinking that it's some kind of public transport, like a bus in the future. Hence the stylish domes and curves. The front is the far right, and I'm thinking about adding some large wheels, or bits and bobs that make it hover. Seeing as it's the future why can't it float too?
Lemme know what you think.

Hey Smoke. You posted in my sketchbook, and I feel I should return the favour. Sorry I took to long.
I don't think those figure poses you posted very well organized, maybe you could you seperate them a bit?
I just notice objects and eyes very close together, as well as mixing in the area and it takes a while to break it down into the indiviual studies. The human form studies seem to overlap each other in places as well. I mean it's good to keep them tight on the page, a sketchbook feels more full when you fill it up as much as possible, but it might be good to divide different studies into different places on the page.
I wish I had more crit to give, since your post was so helpful. Anyway, I like what I see here and good luck with it!

Your digital pieces with colour are definitly stronger than your pencil stuff.
It does look like you might want to organize it better like Ananda said, it looks more like it's just random drawing whatever, hehe. Find an anatomy book, or just pull photos off the internet to do, lets say eyes, for an hour. :)

That last landscape is nice. As far as your doodles/sketches - try to not doodle mindlessly. Be aware of what you're sketching. Ask yourself some questions while your making marks, "What shapes would look cool here?, "what doesn't look right?", "how do I add cool details?" etc. Don't agonize over it, just don't let your hand do the work of the mind (excuse the psychologico mumbo-jumbo!) Good luck!

Sorkness: A good deal of what I've posted is random drawing, as you can see in this post I've taken your advice.
Mentler: Thanks man, I'm taking the time.
MarkWinters: I've taken your advice as well, and I've been trying to put it to good use, thinking of what would look right where, how dark it should be, where it would look better if placed at this angle or that size, ect. Thanks.

I'd like to see more detail in the integration of facial features in the first drawing, just to blend them together - like refining how the eye fits in, and connecting the bottom of the nose with the lip more (you could smooth it out with a curve). Is the eye too close to the nose? Should it come back a bit?
I really like the second face. The eye just seems to fit right in, with nothing out of place and it all being well integrated.

now that's a sketchbook! you have a grat sense of colour, light and form, especially if it comes to landscapes and simple shapes. you need to work more on human figure and animals tho. the viking looks flat and undefined for example. try to draw a whole figure and realize its volume before you "dress" the chacacter.
i'd also like to see something polished from you. quickies are great and full of energy, but patience training is also important.

Hello Smoke!
I started at an art school recently, and I've been instructed to avoid outlines, just rendering out the form instead. So let's experiment! Draw something, at first without using any outlines. Just block in the whole object as a silhouette, lightly. Gradually refine the tone.

I think you should stick with your long, bold strokes, or better yet, try sketching more with pen only. You'll develop a more confident line, and get rid of those unsure, short strokes you'd see in an amateur piece.

Hey Smoke!
If you want to get anywhere, you're gonna need to stop putting yourself down. It doesn't matter how good you are, there are lots of good artists who hate their own work. But, it's up to you. Being positive will do it. Being negative will only hinder your growth as an artist, and a human being (IMO).
It's fun to draw. I'm sure that when you drew as a kid (every kid draws), you didn't give up at the end of a piece and call it crap. You had fun.
Stop taking it all so seriously and just have some fun drawing. You have to be happy in your work, man. :)
Juhani Jokinen

Hey! That mountain study you did is really nice. It shows confidence in how you put down your strokes and you have managed to make the form readable. In your other environments though the readability is a bit poor since frankly there isn't anything there except for planes of different values. Try to get some more info to your enviros and they'll improve a lot.

The shammen girl kind of confuses me i think the mountians were used along the back but they were scaled up so much that you lost the crispness. the yellow is my favorit of yesterdays studies althought you can see through some of the towers a bit

Great studies . i epic showed me the value studies of the hall way and thir n the list one thig that i think might help on things like the cloud studdies is that some point needs to reach a crispness or hardness of like 100% and then their can also be parts blurred and faded ut like you have i think you acceived this better on the lush small mountian study. keep it up and get to sleep

Heya Smoke!
First, Max Challie is right, you're only hindering yourself by letting so much frustration come in.
Your landscape studies are very good, simple but effective.
I believe the main problem you have when painting from imagination is the composition. So try to leran from the photo studies you do how things are composed, and then apply to your imagination work.
Hope that helps :)

Hey dude,
Youve come a long way in your studies. As the others say your landscape works are fantastic. Youve got a good ability to add emphasis, emotion and power to your images through the composition of light. What i suggest working on is putting everything together in the scene a little more effectively, look at the photo studies some more, try simple 5 minute sketches to build up an understanding. The same with your human bodies, look at the proportions a little more, its a popular topic so look around on the forums, some great info, techniques and examples out there. Keep it up, your stuff is really becoming awesome :D

Hello there!
You are improving a lot, keep them coming and its a given you'll be great before you realize it, don't expect it to be tomorrow but they day will come if you keep at it.
Keep posting those, even if people seem to not be paying attention at you at all. Commit to it, commitment is a hard thing but it's the best quality one can learn (I think Im telling this to myself). If I ever have children there's four things I want to teach them above anything else: commitment, persistence, hard work and confidence. Everything else is easy if you have those.
Some of your works look a bit empty and dead, not in a bad way, it can be intriguing. But try to add more interest and tension to your images and later try to find a compromise between misterious and not boring to look at.

Hey Smoke,
I'm absolutely blown away by these organic environments you have in this sketchbook. Some are very Turner like, if you check out his work i'm sure you'll find some inspiration or at least a person to try and beat! Haha.
Even your environments you called generic are full of atmosphere and capture the feeling brilliantly. The caves for example lead me to wonder what's around the corner, what's coming, who lives here and all these questions which are relevant to concept related art. I could totally see you creating environments for space / sci fi related comics.
Your people haven't been that impressive though, mainly because you a) haven't shown very many, lol and b) because you are still learning.
There are definitely great things to come from your art, especially when you are able to convey decent people in your environments, man that's going to be incredible. In fact the environments you have with people in them, say the guy with the tube or even the red guy against a white background, are still interesting to look at. Maybe as a way to improve you could start off with small figures in your environments and then as your people improve gradually make them bigger in your environments.
The jungle, hall way, lake with birds, recent mountains.... All amazing. In fact anytime you draw trees near a lake, I pretty much stare at the picture for ages. Your environments are your biggest strength right now, so learn what you can about drawing good landscapes, it will improve them even more. Hence why I suggest Turner. Maybe divide your time between organic environments and anatomy, say fifty fifty or eighty twenty, because the emotion and feeling of your environments is something that would be sad to lose.

MasonJames88 - Extremely kind and uplifting words mate. Read that today and went on a bender, here's the results, also, check your friends list.
I'm blown away that you would associate anything I do with Turner, the man's a legend!
You're 100% correct about my humans and characters not being much to look at (literally)... I just always get drawn to painting environments one way or the other, however, here's a fucked up creature for you that came from a study of an elderly man. (still working on the old guy, I got wrapped up in more sci fi wanderings.)
Ducky- I didn't stop doing stuff! Your stuff is awesome.

great improvement!! I think you have really good atmospheric studies. You captures the mood pretty well. Great understanding of light. Some of your stuff reminds me of a Halo style work. page 7 I saw a turn in your work. Page 7 was your big leap in getting more definition. My advice to you is work on your figures/forms more. Do a lot of gesture drawings because I feel like that is your weakness. Other than that keep it up because your headed the right direction!

yogeshj25 - Hey, thank you! Gesture studies are like a troll sitting on my shoulder, biting at my neck incessantly reminding me to do more figures, consequently I keep flicking the troll off my neck and stamping it to death, but hey.
Posting a very basic rough for a temple entrance. I want to create a feeling of massive scale, whilst making the viewer feel uneasy. Like stepping into an abandoned church.
Any advice would be appreciated.

if you keep on flicking the troll of your shoulder, it will keep coming back. You need to teach that troll a lesson and kick it in the ass with figure studies and knock the living hell out of it! There is no success without pain. Its the uncomfortable things in life that bring success. No excuses! Push yourself! Push yourself! Push yourself! you have mad potentials!

A smattering of gesture (posemaniacs) studies, not used to doing these, yet alone in photoshop, hopefully the process will improve with time. They're ugly, but here they are.
Also, a figure study from ref.

you are dealing well with atmospheric effects, your environments are interesting
but last two figures studies are flat and the color is grimy
i know that doing what is working out is satisfying but leaving the safe shelter will bring progress

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!
I really lke your lanscapes, although sometime I think it would pay to adhere to the rule of thirds more closley, I noticed that you often leave a main feature to close to/ pointing to the outside of the frame, causing the eye to leave the frame and become confused.
Ide also say that your gestures could use a bit of stretching out and balance, I think you might be getting too caught up with fitting them into their notches on the page and not concentrating enough on their flow and dynamism. -- that said, I'm only just getting into the habit of using gestures and the body construction system, so I might be talking out of my arse.
but yeah, nice landscapes, my favourate in here is the zeypher valley ambush.
