hey man!
nice update.
especially the post before, its nice to see how you build the figure out of simple shapes!
just keep going ;)

Hey man, just to give you some SB support. Don't stress too much about drawing from life in common settings, just practice it and you will improve a ton by that. Keep doing the assignments!

Hey hey guys, thanks for the continued support! Alright, I guess it's time I unveil what I've been up to for the past week that's been keeping me off the forums!
TADA! Hard surface modelling again after a long break!
The land rover is about 50-60% done, still got lots of little details I have to add in. Hoping to finish by sometime mid next week! Then I can get down to texturing, hopefully I can get that part right lol. I suck at texturing.

wow dude great update!
that one is just awesome! cant wait to see it with more details and textured!

With that last post man, I can finally forgive you... j/k :)
That model looks nice, really like your attention to detail, especially in the front. I am guessing you have build the interior of the car, at least where the passenger seat, right? Because the glass has to be transparent when you textured and all. Also, this is being picky, but wouldn't it had been better to use a bump or normal map for the tire threads? That will save you some geometry as well. A last thing is that if you aim for realism, the tire threads should need some work in the design. They are made for a reason and therefore their look, check this reference out: car (http://www.lrfaq.org/images/LandRoverSeriesIII.jpg) Well, I am just being picky about that, no major deal.
Anyways, looking forward for seeing it textured. I know about a bunch of sites with free textures, if you need any I will send those to you.
Oh yeah, it's awesome you are going to the workshop as well, if you are over 21, we can get together for a couple of drinks, they are on me. If not, I will get you some soda or some milk, hehehe, :P. Have you already find a hotel? I am going with a couple of friends, so we might need one more, who knows. Let me know. Also, I guess from my self portraits you can recognize me, and I doubt you look like a potato at all hehe, that might be a problem... Nevertheless, look forward for that.

Guys, thanks.
Maestro, the plan is indeed to model the interior as well. I just haven't gotten down to it yet because the exterior still needs a lot of work lol.
The wheels look like it does now because....that's a zbrush wheel! haha. I got lazy, so I just did the tutorial in zbrush and whipped the wheel out in 2 or 3 minutes lol. I just removed the middle part in max and replaced it with something that looks more like my reference. Bump maps will work, but then I would not be able to make close up shots without it showing up as though it's bump maps. I like close up shots lol, especially low angles haha.
Anyhow, I was just going to leave the wheels alone, being lazy and all, but since you mentioned it I guess I'll fit in some time to rework the wheels haha. No worries on the being picky, that's how we push ourselves to the next level lol.
As for the Seattle trip, no I haven't gotten a hotel yet. If you guys can make room for one more, sure thing man! And I guess drinks are on you :p
Finally, today's update for the rover!
Just ignore the canvas cover part lol, it's just a place holder for now.

Someone once told me a story, about Winston Churchill. I can't recall who, but the story goes something like this.
This was about the time when he was like, one and a half foot into the grave. Old as a relic. There was a class of honors graduates from either Cambridge or Oxford, I cannot recall which precisely, but anyhow, Ivy League elites and all that.
So Churchill was asked to give a speech at the graduation ceremony, and he agreed. When the time came, the fool insisted on walking to the stage by himself. I mean, the old badger was as old as...well, an old badger, and he moved like a really old badger (he had a temper to match as well). It was a long, torturous process to see him walk towards the stage like a rickety house on stilts. It took forever and half a day for him just to get there. And when he got to the stairs leading to the stage? Let's just say it took him forever and two days. And the pains you get from watching doubled. You know, butt sore.
By the time he finally, FINALLY reached the podium, the old coot had spent so much time just getting there that his speech consisted of only two sentences.
"Never give up." He said, thumping his cane into the ground hard. "Never, never, never, never, NEVER."
The guy got a standing ovation.
So, following in his footsteps (pun intended; after all, my progress is about as speedy and smooth sailing as his walk and climb to the podium lol), here's my second attempt at modeling a face. Still full of problems, and the face still isn't quite as lovely as I want it to be, but what the heck. Third time's the charm.
So here it is, front and side, with wires.
And never giving up.
Maestro Andres
November 5th, 2007, 02:39 PM
Hey man, I applaud your effort. This definitively is a good improvement over the last one. The Winston Churchill story is a remarkable one, thanks for sharing it.
I know you have put effort into this, but by looking at the skull, the side view looks good. The only thing that might not be right placed is where the ear goes, it shouldn't be that far in the back of the face. You could double check that since if there is a difference in placement it is not too much.
With the front view, probably the top of the head has to be more rounder, like starting from a bit higher than the eyerbrows area.
Still, it is a good model with good topology in it. Just minor changes and it will be great!
Oh yeah, with the land rover, don't forget to add the driving axle between the wheels! Unfortunately, we haven't reach the age of flying wheels yet :P
Keep it up mate.

Thanks for your unflagging support Maestro! And yeah, thanks for reminding me about the driving axle lol, I completely forgot about it hehe.
Ok, so something simpler today, Dimagyan's next assignment! The composition got a bit out of hand there lol.

hey dude!
thx for the speech of Churchill! really great one... thanks for sharing ;)
the head is really a nice one :) looks great so far, though i have to agree with maestro about the place where the ear is (dont know the name lol...)
its really a bit too far in the back...
and maybe you should add some ears lol ;)
im looking forward on an update on the car hehe.
on the last one i cant say much. proportions are looking fine for me, except you maybe put the left arm of the figure a bit too high... looks kinda weird.
though this is really a hard pose and you did well on it :) just go on!

concerning what i said about strokes etc in my sb, i found some nice pictures in a book that illustrate quite well what i meant:

dont know much to write about it ... i guess you can see quite well how the line variation creates a better sense of form and lightning, especially on the bottom two ;)
i didnt find any paintings on which i could show you how this could work not only on outlines but also on brush strokes but i hope you still got what i meant
now post some new stuff hehe :D

Well, thanks sawa. If you've got anything else please give it to me!
And YAY, I got my connection back! So, some long overdue updates!
First off is an oil painting I've been working on for a while, but haven't got the chance to put it up yet. Excuse the awful phototaking skills lol.
Next is some updates on the rover. The canvas is finally done! And now I've moved on to texturing it. The UVs have been set, and I'm now in the process of texturing it haha. Well, texturing isn't really my strong suit, so I'll welcome any comments!
Lastly is the concept for my next creature model. This is just the first of the series. I need to clean up my lines on of the back view, then I need to move on to drawing some close ups of various parts, like the head, the arms, etc. This one is gonna be a real challenge lol.
Maestro Andres
November 21st, 2007, 12:51 PM
Hey man, nice to see you back around here. The Land Rover is coming along well, nice details on the back of the car too. Did you did the folds of the top blanket in Zbrush? They are a nice addition.
I am not that experience with texturing but of what I have been doing lately, don't forget the other maps besides the color one such as specularity, bump, reflective (if any), etc. It all depends on what look you give the rover such as shiny new or grungy old. If you add cracks, rust and all that, specularity will help you getting that look. Also above all, don't forget to look at some reference of the type of look you are going for.
The oil painting is looking good. Just push the values a little bit more to create depth in it. If you have a ref picture of it, I could give you further pointers on it. As a personal suggestion, if you made the top left corner a.k.a the BG space really dark it will help pushing the objects forward. The more contrast you add to the piece, the more depth it will have.
Lastly, you last character design remind me to this guy called Guyver (it's an anime character with special suit). Indeed it will be a great challenge but at the same time you are going to learn a lot if you do as much details as you have done for the car already.
CouchPotato
November 25th, 2007, 09:12 AM
Well, Maestro, I tried to use zbrush lol, but I suck at it, so I ended up just doing it the old fashioned way - cutting edgeloops and laying meshsmooth lol.
I did in fact follow the style of Guyver, so it should be no surprise that it looks to have influence from that series.
Anyhow, I'm feeling a bit sick, so gonna just make this short....cleaned up my lines, and a draft close up of the forearm.

hi!
i like the effort that you've put into drawing the human figure. you've improved a lot since the first post. however, i am seeing a lot of eraser marks, and very very dark lines. would i be right to say that you're very concerned about producing clean, beautifully finished drawings?
well. don't be afraid of producing messy drawings for now. loosen up your lines. be more spontaneous in constructing the muscles. what i found worked for me in my anatomical studies was reducing the muscles to basic shapes, it makes working out the proportions easier. also, messing around with lines to understand how the muscles link to each other and affect one another when the figures are in motion is a good practice.
cheers dude. you're making good progress. =)

November 25th, 2007, 11:36 AM
The 3d model of the truck is coming along nicely. Though, the tires are a bit detracting. Are the treads really that deep?
The anatomy will get there too, just keep up the hard work.

Theshasha:
Hey hey, thanks for dropping by! And thank you so much for your kind words. The eraser marks and dark lines I think, is just a sign that I still can't control my lines very well. I'm working on gesture drawings as often as I can to improve upon it, but it seems as if it's still going to take a while to happen haha.
I would like to say that I'm trying to produce clean and beautiful drawings but really, I just make a lot of mistakes lol, that's why all the erasing. Yes, indeed, I still have problems with proportions haha, especially with extreme foreshortening involved. Your advice is sound and I will see if I can somehow work it into my working habits, but I'm a slow learner, it'll take a while before I get it lol. A lot of the stuff that others said to me in this same thread earlier, I didn't understand till now, and some, I still don't lol.
Thank you again!
Sublimus:
Welcome to my humble corner, Sublimus! Actually, this is a military rover, and is meant to go into really awful, muddy terrain, and the treads are indeed quite deep. However, I understand what you're saying. The fact is the wheel was a quick and dirty job haha. I'll fix it at some point, just that I'm so busy now lol.
And thank you for your encouragment! I'll do my best!
As for today's update. A life portrait of my dad!
Edit:
This pic looks weird lol. It looks really different from the original....well, blame it on my sucking photo taking skills haha. I need me a tripod....
Maestro Andres
November 26th, 2007, 11:17 AM
I don't think it looks that weird. Normally, what I do is to put the piece next to a wall and take a pic of it so I get good lighting on it. Anyways, the life portrait came out very well. Seeing your previous work, this shows a lot of improvement! Considering how faces are hard to draw, you have done a great job. Only thing that bothers me is that probably the right eye (of the person) shouldn't be that far and should be a little bit smaller than his left due to the angle of the face ( His left eye is closer to us).
Any other than that, keep doing these man, you are going to learn a lot on the way. I am still looking forward to your SP.

I'm pretty stressed out too this past couple of weeks haha...
Just a short one because I am so tired.
I've been working on a steamship model as well. I can't actually remember if I posted the model up here or not....oh well.
This weekend have been pretty much spent trying to texture the steamship and the land rover.
I'm not very confident about how they look, especially the landrover....I keep thinking I may have went over board with the dirt stuff....but maybe it'll turn out ok since I'm going to actually build a simple scene around it and it's gonna be further back.
The steam ship rigging is not yet done because I'm trying to think how the max rigging (not to be confused with sail rigs) will affect the model, so it's on hold for now.
As for the rover, there're still bits that I haven't done yet, as can be plainly seen. Probably will be done slowly over the course of the next week.
Maestro Andres
December 2nd, 2007, 10:41 AM
Quite a nice update man. The steamship is a nice model, though never imagined that it will have some cannons hehehe. Now put the Jolly Roger on the top!!! j/k
The land rover textures are alright so far. The dirt brushes are the wheel spaces work well because they are true of how they are seen in reality. I think that the texture for the main body will need more variation. The spots are too big and uniform, so it looks repetitive. Also, you could try playing with diffuse and specularity maps because normally metal is shiny even in some parts even if it is aged. Probably, you haven't got to it yet, but the wheels need a dirty texture to match the rest of the car. In any case, this all depends on how much of it will be seen on your scene, if it is further back in the scene, don't bother going over too many details that will be lost on the final render.

great update! how could u have forgot to post that ship earlier dude! i really love it already
on the land rover, maestro already said what is on my mind ;) add some more hightlights etc on the metal stuff cause right now it doesnt look that metallic..
im not sure about the gree areas as well. i think they would work better if they were less saturated, or put the value a bit more into grey... im not sure, i think you might just try out some variations ;)

For like 2 weeks, I had been concentrating on the steam ship model, and as a result, my figure drawing skills suffered like hell lol, couldn't even draw a simple figure in proportions. So, this week, I've been working on getting the feel back. Some assorted figure drawings, Bridgeman studies, gesture drawings, simple figures and the like.

December 23rd, 2007, 08:58 AM
Just a quick one before I go to bed. I've also been working on painting in photoshop, and this represents my first effort. The painting is done over a quick 5 minute sketch I did of someone when I was on the train. I'm working in the gray scale before moving on to the colors.
One thing I'm extremely unhappy about. Well, two things rather. One is the speed in which I'm doing this. It's taken me like 3 or 4 days to reach this stage, which is totally unacceptable, it's too slow. I need to figure out how people can paint theirs so fast lol.
The other thing I'm unhappy about is the blending. I'm not really blending it very well. The photoshop brush stroke is so obvious, especially the highlights on the hair. Ummmm....aside from that, there's also something else about it I don't like, but can't put a finger to yet. Oh well, maybe the next day will bring some answers.

great great great, i really like your perseverance, thats awesome. A tip on the digital stuff, allways use BIG brushes, i see there that you used too many strokes of a small brush, start with the biggest brush possible, and gradually go with smaller brushes, but not small brushes, just a bit smaller than before, at the end you can concentrate on details and blending, dont forget to zoom in at this stage, i personally dont do digital stuff from long time, but i think this is going to help you. How well you render in pencil?, you wont get a better result in digital than you do on pencil, remember this... and keep at it!. :lifedrawing: :anime:

i agree with christianally sat down and did a ton of figure drawings after that ship model eh :D that on the brush stroke thing ;) that would solve your blending problem well me thinks!
apart from that i think you might lighten the lighter areas up some more since the overall image seems quite dark.

Hey man, I was hoping to see the other model you send me the other day, which was very neat for being poly modeling. I think you are doing wise in practicing the figure like this, try applying what we learned from Kevin Chen at the workshop, that was very helpful. Also, it will help you some if you try double checking some of the poses when you get home by looking for reference, that way you can find your mistakes and fix stuff that is wrong.
Other than that, let me guess, is that your knee? Better be!

Howdy, CA! There's been some interesting upheavals in my life the past couple weeks, so I haven't been updating, so here's some of my stuff that's been stacking up haha.
First is a Rembrandt master study that Andres, Sawa and I are working on. The original piece is....well I forgot his son's name but I think it's Tidus in Monk's habit. Anyway I only zoomed into his face because the canvas I was working on isn't very big, so I decided to work on a smaller area. Pretty awful looking lol, but the values is sorta done. Just waiting for the paint to dry so I can slap the color coat on next.
Next are some other "master studies" I did, on Cezanne. Just learning the paint strokes and all. It's really funny but when I went to the Art Renewal Center, they said Cezanne didn't meet their standards and they don't have his pieces on. Makes me wonder if I've wasted my time on this guy. In anycase though, I haven't a clue what I was doing so maybe it doesn't matter haha.
Last are some life portraits. (I still need to work on the guy's eyes a bit in the charcoal piece)
@ sawa
As for the shoe, well, the details are meant to be textured on, but this was done in Max 9 and I don't have it at home, so it'll have to wait. The reference is some Addidas shoe, can't recall the model number. The steamship, I'm cleaning up and optimizing the file haha. Getting rid of unwanted polygons, grouping them better, and so on. After that I need to set UVs, so...a lot of work being done, but nothing visual yet haha.

Nice painting!, keep doing lots of them. Do you have some kind of method to do them?, i have been taught to start from dark to light colors, or vice versa, and to start with big brushes first and leave the little brushes for later, and also, to not use total black color but only on small details, you could try that and see it by yourself. Keep it up! :asspat:

February 2nd, 2008, 06:28 AM
ha finally we get to see some more paintings! :D
really good to see you studying all this brush stroke stuff! on the cezanne painting you got his style quite well!
only crit would be, take care to keep the lighter areas a bit lighter. e.g on the rembrandt painting i think the face isnt really that dark... it pops more out because its really bright compared to the rest of the painting ;)
btw, i think of doing the color study in oils as well, so maybe it would be nice to take process shots so we can compare our approaches afterwards :)

February 10th, 2008, 10:12 AM
Christian, sawa, thanks for the encouragements! Sorry I took a while to reply, because I was away on a bit of holiday for a bit, visiting relatives and all.
Hmm...process, I think I just work from big to small and I lay the tones and values before going to the color coat. I think I generally do work from dark to light patches haha.
And I think keeping progress shots would be a good idea sawa! haha. The Rembrandt copy is somewhere else at the moment so I can't work on it yet haha.
Anyhow, here's some junk I did while on vacation. Just bits of scribbles on the sketchbook. And another oil painting, a Sargent copy this time, on a landscapey thing haha. Color is kind of dull at the moment, so I'm trying to see if I can brighten up the whole look.

Hey dude, it's good to see some updates from you. With the figure skecthes you got a nice sense of dynamism going on, lot of variety in poses. Still one thing I see are the very sketchy lines, which show lack of confidence strokes. Don't worry, I am guilty of that as well but if you want to loosen up more try using media such as pens. You can get good lines with those and also, go for larger strokes to avoid the sketchiness.
You landscape looks interesting, hope to see the finished version sometime.

nice update! like the figures, they're very dynamic, also good proportions :)
though i have to second maestro on the line quality. maybe you should put the pencil aside for a while and draw with a ball point pen or smth else you cant erase ;) it should it should add some more confidence to your lines

hey dude :)
nice to see an update on the painting!
maybe its because of the photo, but the overall image seems quite dark atm!
the face is already popping out much better than before since its quite light. but there are also bunches of light (does that exist? lol..) on the clothes. they have some brownish/yellowish color (at least on my monitor :D ) so maybe you should define some areas on the clothes that are supposed to be lighter and get them more into the yellowish direction

Your 3d work is pretty badass, man. That ship is so sweet.
Its great to see that you are trying to bring up your 2d skills. Once they are on par with your 3d, you'll be a real double threat, mate!

Maaaaaaaan, haven't been any updates at all for so long! Learning how to use Maya at the moment, so not much time for the traditional stuff, aside from silly little scribbles at the side of my notebooks lol.
Alright, just some simple drawings. A bit of life drawings, a couple of studies of ancient greek statues that my local museum got on display from the Louvre, some weird vehicle concept thingy and some line weights practice lol

Hi couch, you're doing an amazing job. Actually that shoe was f**king amazing, I have no idea of how you did that. Your 2d art is awesome too. The full body and head studies are great. I'd like to see some more of that, they are never enough, are they?
I'm glad that I come here again, cheers!

More leaves! (that look like crap haha). This thing is really really hard. Never knew it was so tough to draw simple leaves lol. Well, as Brom will say, keep truckin'!
And thanks lennon, I still need a lot of work on my 3d as well as 2d lol. The shoe wasn't that hard in concept. It's a bit tedious to do, but not complicated. I'll explain in your sb, since I don't feel like typing it out twice haha.

I can't believe that my last post was way back in march lol. I've been gone too long.
I've been really busy with work, and hadn't much chance to work on my own stuff or practice very often lol. The silly thing is, I've got loads of stuff done at work, but I can't show a single bit of it haha.
Anyhow, so here's some stuff I managed to find time for (aside from doodles in the sketchbook haha)
(edit: top piece is charcoal pencil, bottom piece is a digital)

So.......a long long time has passed since I last posted haha. The past 6 months, I've been holed up in a......hole, somewhere, in a swampy planet far far away. Learning from Master Shifus about the mystical Force of 3D-ism. Through the teachings of the Master Shifus, I have gained Enlightenment! Sort of. I think. Well, the path of 3D-ism is full of the temptations of the daaaark side....mainly really dark and strong coffee that leaves you shaking afterwards.
Anyhow, just some stuff to show what I've been up to.
The following was done in a couple of weeks. Polycount stands at around 38 or 39k polys. Also attached are a couple of screens of my wires, samples of my texture sheets, and the reference pics from which I modeled this from.

Hey man, like I told you earlier on MSN, that last truck is a huge improvement over your previous work, even compared to the Jeep you were working on before. They are really teaching you well over and especially now, that you are working full time with them.
What I like more about it, are the textures you created. They look very believable and convincing, especially that mud splash on the front and pieces of mud on the windshield. That shows how well you understand what these textures go through. Anyways, hope to see you posting more sometime soon!

after so so long lol. man, all that dust on ze ol' SB. Work has been keeping me real busy, aaand it sucks that i can't show any of the stuff at work. But i've been on a break lately, and i did some studies for myself and here they are. Still WIP, still working on a nice topo flow. Still wondering how to get damn hair lol

Comments are welcome, especially if I'm getting the portrait right. I know the hair is off, and I'm working on that! (Hopefully lol, hair is tough)

i don't know anything about 3d, but your stuff is looking really good. i agree with one of the above posters, once you've gotten your 2d as good you'll be doing some damage. i think you've got a nice sketchbook all around, just a really nice variety of stuff. keep going, mate!
