Non-Human Law Enforcement Officer
not sure if I get the next topic suggestion or not, but this would be it if so:
Non-Human Law Enforcement Officer
from any time period, must be obviously non-human (robots are ok, pointy elf-ears are not enough). Must also have a uniform with insignia and at least one non-lethal weapon.
Let me know if you have any questions or if the topic for #60 is someone else's choice.
1 = non human
2 = uniform
3 = non lethal weapon
Make sure your picture contains these - you will receive 3 VOTES for each topic covered.
(for the new people)
NOT ALL ENTRIES ARE TAKEN TO THE POLL.
(the selection is based on technical quality criteria)
ENTRIES NOT POLLED WILL RECEIVE C&C
(i really try to do this every time)

Hey guys just chucking up a working idea for the alien, I wanted to figure out what my alien would be before I chucked clothes and amour on him.
So I just did this sketch of a pretty humanoid alien, but gave him some extra arms and a hollow abdomen, the idea being that thes guys are all asexual and just lay an egg which would fill out that area, hence the huge child bearing hips!
Also I thought that maybe the little inner arms would be for delicate stuff they have an extra knuckle compared with the larger arms which also have a thumb, basically big arms for carrying and little arms for fiddly stuff, kinda like a crab with its lil appendages near it mouth. Anyways bout 9-mins so far, photoshop.
Now I gotta figure out what his/its uniform should be :S
Ok I messed about a bit with his uniform and have started to go through it. I thought I'd stay away from blue on the uniform (the dude is basically blue anyways :blah: ) but now am wondering if it'll work out. But this is what I got so far.
Okay, hopefully made the deadline! all finished up, a touch rushed to finished but overall not too unhappy with. I decided to carry the gimp cop theme going, so he has an Elctro-whip 3000 to go with the skin tights and cod piece! Ouch!
February 21st, 2007, 07:47 AM
Ok, here's the finished one. No time for any colours so just pencil will have to do.

First time entry and first digital painting that wasn't an environment so I would love some feedback.
In a civilization of midget mutant rabbit fetuses the intellectual are the enforcers building large robotic law enforcement suits which are based of stories from there elder Peter Cottontale. One rabbit can fit in the cranium cockpit and guide this mazzive machine around. On one shoulder it has a non-lethal net launcher and in the other hand it carrys a dart pistol which is loaded with a slight overdose of stewed carrots to knock there opponent out.

Life on the semi aquatic planet of Quebos is anything but easy. Run by a ruthless dictator who has created a police state where civilians are nothing more than slaves. Local law enforcement officers carry out a variety of duties and orders specifically from the emperor. Keeping the peace however isn’t one of them. Although martial law had been declared decades earlier, the local population continues to rebel and carry out their own plans unless specifically placed under the emperors ruling thumb. Shock-batons and crowd controlling gasses are used to keep general order… lethal means are used should things get too out of hand. Roaming mounted patrols make the rounds of the city slums usually turning a blind eye to the petty crime... but continue to be ever conscious of the uprising that will soon happen.
February 22nd, 2007, 06:51 PM
I started this thinking about birds....for some reason. And this phoenix air law enforcement guy came out....
February 23rd, 2007, 02:20 AM
Pretty good wip dragon4lunch.
Here's my wip.
When the League of Planets voted on which race would become its law officers, unanimously, the alien race of Broskes were elected. Their no non-sense gruff demeanor was perfect for law enforcement. They have no sense of humor, and though often times rude, are never deceiving or akin to bribes. Each is assigned a Gas Gun, a non-lethal weapon that uses the musk of the grotesquely cute Impas. This musk has an euphoric effect on all known sentient life forms except for the Broskes, who never even smile, let alone become euphoric.

Well, this really needs more work, but since I won't have any more time to work on it at all, I better just put it in as my entry.Cartoonish as it is.
Edit: I forgot I'm supposed to write a thing about it all... Too dang long since I was around. So here goes.
The demon-like Law Officers at the infamous rich kiddie's colony of Bervert 07, are in fact the very creatures that came through one of the portals at the early stages of Beaming Technology. Whence they originate is a place beyond their own memory. As their time with us has waxed, however, they've shown a remarkable affinity for law enforcement, an evenhanded sense of justice, and an unwavering allegiance to following commands.Officers are equipped with a compact immobilization arachnid mesh and a variable output Gauntelekt Arc Emitter, which by default is focused on pacification. The Officers go to great lengths to apprehend perpetrators without the use of lethal techniques, and are known for their ability to endure high levels of physical trauma in order to complete an assignment. They possess a hyper-regenerative constitution and recover from injuries within hours. They are the perfect peace-keepers in an environment where the use of violent techniques would be an affront to civilized politics and economic practice.

1. Here is the first WIP. This is just a quick line sketch for my idea.
2. I reworked the drawing. I wasn't really that happy with the first one. I wanted to give it a more upright build.
3. Here are some base colors to get started. These colors may change and a few will blend into each other.
4. Now I threw in a basic lighting scheme to guide my paint over. I also through in a background. The background is just a photo I took and doctored. I will color match everything later and try to fully integrate the two images to create one.
5. I did a bit of a paint over, but I'm running out of time, so I can't give it the attention it really needs. Time to move on to some texturing of the surfaces. I relying on the Sunday, midnight, deadline anywhere in the world clause stated in the first post for my entry.
6. (Final Version) Well, here is my entry. I applied surface texture, highlights, and tried to blend it in with the environment better.

CHOW #60 Non-Human Police
The City’s police force was having a problem, with crimes of all nature on the rise foot chases have become more and more common the criminals however have a much better knowledge of the urban landscape and with there willingness to scale barbed wire fences, climb balconies and jump off roofs sometimes from one building to another, in order elude capture. The police were abandoning too many chases. The solution the FCRP. The FCRP(foot chase robotic police) was designed with speed and agility in mind. It folds up compactly for transport in police trucks and once set on a chase will pursue a criminal until he is captured. The FCRP can run twice as fast as a civilian, can jump a 10’ fence and is an excellent climber. It comes equipped with infrared and night vision. The FCRP will quickly chase down the suspect and clasp on to them signalling it’s precise location for pickup by a paddy wagon and arresting officer. In cases of multiple suspects the FCRP will cuff the suspect and place a locator on him and then proceed to chase down further suspects. For extreme situations the FCRP is equipped with built in stun gun and also stun on contact.

sorry it took me a while to get to posting these!
first attempt that I discarded:
I removed the spikes from the collar of the man-catcher since they might be potentially lethal
February 24th, 2007, 07:37 PM
My first entry into a community event, forth painting digital or otherwise.
After cyber-genetically enhancing canines the homeland defense/canine division found that a quicker reward response straight into the spinal cord, made training so much more effective, that the canines were able to operate independent of a controller, and patrol the streets in packs. By the 3rd generation speech was achieved by adding an electronic voice box below the optical sensors. A stun gun under the chest can subdue a suspect well long enough for a paddy wagon to arrive. It is in question at just how intelligent the altered canines have become, but some of the units have rebelled after claiming human equality, as well as workers rights. The Homeland Defense wants to keep this a secret, but once something learns to speak it becomes difficult to keep them quite.
February 24th, 2007, 07:54 PM
Cool entries everyone, this week I will mostly be voting for (so far) Lynwood or WoodlandWalker.
Great rendering Dragon, but the yellow makes me thing more construction than authority - mabye if it was a muted blue with yellow & black diagonal stripes, anyway cool entry.
Cognition - that is a cool piece really cool to look at but again I dont think of Law & order. Dare I say it reminds me of HPX's work. Very nice.
Ok on to business:-
The gradual social and economic decay of Barrkatu V meant that anarchy and violence were a regular and familiar occurrence within the main city streets. As a result the once repected police force was now thought of more as private security firm, hired to quell the anti-social behaviour. Unfortunatley the increasing numbers of dejected citizens taking to the streets was creating a manpower issue for the police, making it very hard to subdue all the necessary troublemakers.
In an attempt to take the power back in the most non lethal way, the gas-dye grenades were introduced. The grenades act like regular tear gas but they have a very powerful bright red pigment broken down into gas form. The pigment is impossible to remove from material and skin for a number of days, thus allowing patrol units to track & arrest rioters who were not picked up at the event.
Good luck everyone

Hey guys, this is a pretty cool topic. Can't pass this one up.
Chuck mate, dragon4lunch, Pizza Explosion, ATAnderson- Nice!!!
bwkeough- Awesome sketches and it's really cool posting those thumbs. Can't wait to see the final.
Think this will be the final for me. Hope you like.
There is a number one reason to why nobody travels to the planet Kolgath. The Kolgathians particularly hate space travelers and visitors to their planet, so they made it a point to assemble the most deranged and psychotic law enforcement in the universe. Meet Braxer 0.500, one of the most distinguished law enforcement officers on Kolgath. He is a twelve-foot monstrosity and carries a gun that could blow up a two-story house. He is assembled from junkyard scrap and dead bodies. Like all his other counter-parts he is completely delusional and quite insane…and he shoots anything that smiles. You smile on Kolgath and you get pumped full of bullets. Kolgathians hate happy people and they hate you!!!
This is how your Miranda warning would read on Kolgath
-You don’t have the right to an attorney.
-You have no rights.
-Anything you say will be used as a good excuse for prolonging your torture and riddling you with bullets.
-Your existence is meaningless!
-You are screwed indefinitely!!!!
Do yourself a favor……DON’T GO TO KOLGATH!!!
February 25th, 2007, 04:03 AM
Alright! Been busy last night painting:
The Long--Arm (of the Law) Robot is a very effective security bot. It comes with an arm that can extend up to 5 meters and it can handcuff multiple suspects. It is armed with non-lethal and lethal ammo (the gun holes can be closed in order to not be too intimidating when patroling the public).
February 25th, 2007, 04:24 AM
[QUOTE=Karonno]Well...Here I go.
In a near future, the City of Atlantis will resurface and with it creatures such as the centaur will set foot on this earth once more. But years from that phenomenon, with new beings comes new problems, and here is our character suited up for urban affairs.
February 25th, 2007, 05:02 AM
So in the city of Mug, on the planet of Omicron Perci 15, the police legion is really struggling to make numbers. Their take no prisoner police has only backfired making all the normal, petty, low life's dangerous killers and it is wearing on the police force. The numbers of the force are so low that instead of just relying on new recruits they are getting some of the severely wounded retired officers into robotic prostheses just to pad the numbers. The city council decides on issuing a new law enforcement policy to curve the violence the police have been dealing with. The decision is made to disarm all the police officers of their high-powered deadly arsenal and give them all non-lethal stun batons. It definitely isn't the most liked decision the police of the force have had to swallow but hopefully it will be the right one.
February 25th, 2007, 04:15 PM
Some really good entries this week.
matias: I really like where this is headed, and having the uniform all organic and almost merging with his skin is very interesting. Don't forget his weapon!
Chuck, mate: A typically stylish and humorous entry from you. Really cool.
Mr Grumble: Where did your WIP go? I thought it looked great!
Here's my pic. My copper has some kind of non-lethal tube gun. That's all the explanation I can give...:D I'll have some thumbnails and a couple of WIP stages in my sketchbook so check it out if ya like.
Good luck everyone!

Here's mine first attempt in CHOW.I believe its all good.
February 25th, 2007, 09:16 PM
Well here's my first attempt at CHOW!
The APEHOG POLICE
Half Ape half Dog!
Has the flexibility of an ape and the smartness of a dog!
February 25th, 2007, 09:43 PM
Here's my entry. Made it with time to spare, woo hoo!
The Ana-guma law enforcement squad, know for their burly stature and short tempers, protects the hidden forest village of mutant badgers. Due to the generally foul character of most mutant badgers, the squad is constantly upholding law and order with their state-issued beat sticks made of the finest solid mahogany. Most of their enforcement is of the non-lethal variety, using their beat sticks to subdue and then securing offenders with lengths of rope. While their methods may be simple, they are effective and the mutant badger community respects and fears the Ana-guma squad. Each citizen in the village is taught at an early age to recognize the distinct uniform of the officers. Consisting of thick leather armor with metal plating, the uniforms both distinguish and protect. Each officer is identified with a golden badge signifying name and rank.
February 26th, 2007, 12:30 AM
My first CHOW!
Homo-Skinkians are a highly evolved species who share traits with their reptilian ancestors, being able to regenerate severed limbs. This race of beings has developed crime deterrents by grafting sheers onto its law enforcement officers so that they can incapacitate their suspects without causing permanent bodily damage, though in recent years the number of lawsuits aimed at law enforcers has spiked with complaints of discoloration in regrown appendages…
February 26th, 2007, 12:37 AM
One would think Hell is a place of lawlessness and chaos. One would be wrong. With a population made up of the mortal world's very worst offenders, a strong hand is required to keep the kingdom from complete anarchy. For this reason, Lucifer created the Infernal Magistrates, the lawgivers of Hell. Armed with standard-issue Agonistes staff (pain and suffering in a stick), they patrol the vast labyrinth of Hell, seeking those who would mock The Morningstar's laws. Pictured here is Adramahl, Chief Magistrate, who single-handedly quelled the Gehenna riots of the early 1700s with nothing more than The Agonistes in his hand and his devotion to the Codes of Lucifer.

Wow, nice, I'm actally in. Quite honestly, I think I would've rejected myself. :bashful: And a few others, heh.
I need a bit more time before I give any votes here methinks.
February 27th, 2007, 01:57 PM
bwkeough: Yours is maybe my favorite here (AFTER mine, of course :p )
Great creature - only crit - I think it could have done with one pair of arms less. It's already a little much stuff going on, with the pet and all the horns and detail. (Kind of like when Obi Wan is riding on this lizard with tons of robots shooting at him and the bad guy in a circle vehicle with legs after him - ultra confusing scene in Episode III)
Matias: Close second. Great rendering, great monstrosity - I'm no fan of exposed guts and bones though - it makes the creature look overly vulnerable, which wouldn' make sense from an evolutionary standpoint.
PizzaExplosion: I LOVE that little kid! SOOO cute! His facial expression, how he is too shy and afraid to face the officer. And of course his cute handwritten note. Money man, money!
dragon4lunch: Absolutely awesome! SOOOOOO SWEEEET!!!
February 27th, 2007, 03:54 PM
ahaha I'm going to have to go with the cigar smoking, squid cop. It made me laugh.
February 27th, 2007, 05:25 PM
Ah! matias' and pizzax's are awesome ~
February 27th, 2007, 06:12 PM
Matias Got my vote. The creature serves the topic well, has a neat design, and is beautifull rendered. A sexy suit too...very nice.
February 27th, 2007, 06:15 PM
Voted for oishiiniku, concept stood out most. Looks very alien and otherworldly. Good round everyone!
February 27th, 2007, 08:35 PM
"rmick - borderline, member since 2003 with only 9 posts? leaning towards no".
Not to sound facetious, but is that really a criteria for making the final cut? My “attendance record”? I welcome critique and comments and believe me, I am beyond flattered to be chosen. It just seems … I dunno, arbitrary? If I’m wrong, feel free to let me know.
Having said that, my official vote goes to….. (drumroll, please) dragon4lunch!
The design, execution, not to mention the assorted schematic-style diagrams are top-notch. Hands-down, the most detailed and thought-out design here. Bravo. Your work is always solid, here and in COW and this is no exception.
As a sidenote, I do have to give a “well done” to naomiful, though. Her design is truly unique amongst the various alien/android/hybrid beasts here – alluring, disturbing and less than human – but it’s lacking one thing: what is she/it? Give me a story to go with the pic. Otherwise, very interesting piece. Good work, everyone.
February 27th, 2007, 08:42 PM
I was just curious about this, I like his piece, I think it is a he....but I am curious why it was accepted for polling....all in all it is a really well done concept however just wondering about one of the main items that needed to be in the piece...a non lethal weapon..
I believe in chuck-mate's thats a revolver?
February 27th, 2007, 09:01 PM
RMick: Thank you very much for those kind words! Much appreciated!
I think the reason for deleting members for not using the account much is, so that membership names aren't occuppied by non-active people, who might not even return to the thread, ever. Look at yahoo - if you try to get a name like JoeSchmoe@yahoo.com - probably already taken.
Jack Frost: good point about the "non-lethal" aspect.
oishiiniku: I commented on your piece before the poll already, but I feel like saying it again: Great job on the metal and material rendering! Good job on the overall silhouette too. Design-wise though, I don't see how a creature that is so top-heavy could have such small feet. It would tip over.
February 27th, 2007, 09:19 PM
I ended up voting for dragon4lunch. It's a nice concept, well drawn and explains things very well just from the drawing.
Matias, well done. For me he looks a bit "off" though. Might just be the alien body parts and muscles that makes it so for me. Eyes not used to it.
Chuck, mate, you made me smile when seeing that one. It's off from the concept with the nonlethal weapon though, and not your usual effort.
Woodlandwalker, yours made me laugh when I first saw it. Vote almost went to you.
PizzaExplosion, good piece, also funny. That kid draws the strings, standing there in the spotlight.
bwkeough, this picture got a little too "messy" for me, think it's all the limbs and larvae and all that crammed together that makes it hard to read right away for me. Nice concept though.
oishiiniku, it looks like that thing is gonna tip over any minute. Rest is well done though.
February 27th, 2007, 10:20 PM
-Ah this was a fun topic...but I admit I should of read those rules more closely before diving in. I swear my guys gun only squirts water...it's just..uh...a big water pistol:D
My apologies Oblio. No more slacking on the rules next time.
dragon4lunch- you got my vote! You had the best concept from the get go. Not only is it a highly believable creation but also it is backed up by those fantastic black&white illustrations you added with it. I can see this easily as a future police force. Ace work!
oishiiniku- runner-up! I don't know why but this guy keeps on reminding me of a character in Star Wars. It is a really spiffy design oishiiniku and your color palette is also great. I just find dragon4lunch's concept to be something that really would truly work as a police force. I have a feeling this guy would have a very hard time moving around with a head that huge. Still a beauty of a piece! Got to check your sketchbook!
February 28th, 2007, 12:36 AM
I voted for atanderson
woodlandwalker would have been my next pick,
then dragon for third, his layout and techs were spot on
February 28th, 2007, 02:12 AM
Voted for Chuck
That's a tight composition. I envy people who can do tight compositions.
February 28th, 2007, 02:51 AM
Hey guys, first thanks for allowing me, even though it was kinda late and to those that gave me some votes. I actually ended up going for Cognition.Sb's piece, I liked the style and the pose so it sold me. Close second was Oishiiniku's which I think nailed the points in the breif a little better also was really well done overall, but something just caught me with Cognition.Sb's.
Others of note I liked, Bwkeoughs, Mark Winters and Jack Frosts pieces.
February 28th, 2007, 04:03 AM
Went for oishiiniku for mostly all the said reasons - I can almost imagine the scatchy noise the character would make when talking through the mask.
@oishiiniku - Great work man, you deserve to win. Also some people mention his feet being too small, I believe that it's these exaggerated proportions that give your character so much 'character'.
@Blue1272 - thanks for your vote man, I'm glad someone liked it.
February 28th, 2007, 04:27 AM
Some really good entries this round!
I decided to go for matias. I thought the piece was really well executed and I liked the fact that the uniform was organic-looking - an extension of the character, almost.
dragon4lunch definitely delivered the most considered and well-rounded piece. The only thing that stopped me voting for it is that you could argue that it's more of a piece of industrial design than a character. But hey, robots are people too so what do I know, right?
Composition-wise, I really liked bwkeough's piece. Plus it had a real sense of fun about it and it was very well finished, too.
Chuck, mate's pistol-packing squid cop is really stylish and silly. You crazy fool.
ATAnderson's piece had a great sense of atmosphere. You can feel the bullets ricocheting and hear him shouting for "KLARFRAKKK!!!", which is how he says "BACKUP" in his language.
As an aside about my own piece, I agree that realistically there's no way my character could keep his head up longer than a couple of minutes, but I let the silhouette dictate the direction the piece took rather than any rational sense of design. Plus, I like teh tiny feets! I will bear it in mind though. Silly creatures that don't make sense will only get you so far, after all...
Good luck to everyone!
February 28th, 2007, 05:01 AM
haa......didn`t even know about the non-lethal part. should have read the description more closely, I guess.
(and maybe spend more than 20 minutes on the piece...)
well.... live and learn.
thanks for the comments and votes people.
ho - voted oishiiniku, of course.
come on.... best entry in every aspect. I hate those Heavy-talent-packing maniacs....
February 28th, 2007, 12:32 PM
bwkeoughYes I am a new user, but not quite a kid. More of a college student looking to pick up some skills that my school should offer but doesnt.
and to the lack of quality aspect of my piece, the purpose of these challenges is to gain new knowledge, skills, and creativity, is it not?
This piece is my first photoshop painted character and one of the best pieces I have done even though I know it does not compare to some peoples work. I'm here to learn and maybe gain some portfolio quality pieces in the end. So bwkeough Thank you for allowing my piece in the poll and I hope my next one will have a few more skills behind it.
March 1st, 2007, 09:11 PM
Sorry if I stepped on any one's toes with the comments above...Due to time zone separation (Oblio is on Romania, I believe, I'm on the East Coast of the US), I didn't have tons of time to review what I said in my PM very closely when Oblio replied and said he would post my list verbatim. I was actually in the middle of ironing my pants at 7am before going to work! I'll be more considerate if I have this opportunity again. :)
It's my opinion that community activities should be as inclusive as possible. Since this week I had the privilege to choose, I did my best to select entries that showed sincere effort instead of basing my choices on results alone. And since there's a lot of people here I don't know very well, I compared the image to the join date and post count to get an idea of that person's skill level.
rmick --I admit, I'm puzzled by the 2003 join date with only 11 posts. Regardless of the reasons why, I'm happy to see you more active now. Please believe that no slight was intended, I was just trying to figure out where your skill level was to get an idea of the effort you put in on your piece.
Iceman0xh - Same thing as above, I was just trying to get a feel to where you were at. No offense intended with the "kid" comment! For me, art has been a lifelong passion, I forget sometimes that not everyone starts that journey at the same age.
March 1st, 2007, 10:12 PM
Bwkeough - It sounds like you're using "no colour" as a negative, which is strange when you consider the outlines for CHOW.
Anyway, here are the ones that I liked.
Matias, Mark Winters, oisiiniku, Bwkeough, PizzaExplosion, Dragon4lunch and cognition.sb.
March 1st, 2007, 11:18 PM
Bwkeough - It sounds like you're using "no colour" as a negative, which is strange when you consider the outlines for CHOW.
instead of "no color" I should have said "not completely finished," as you yourself said, it did not get past the pencil stage. I liked your cloven-hoofed kangaroo chick with the toilet plungers and wanted to include it, but I was on the fence due to its stage of completion. You also had the unfortunate position of being the 2nd one I looked at after the very finished entry by matias -- subjectivity isn't much of an excuse, but I'm sure it played a role in the comment I wrote.
BUT -- more importantly, I think a stupid IE caching issue might be causing some confusion as your final entry looks more rendered than I remember from when I was making the pick list (you edited with the final at 5:16 am on the 26th my time), did you possibly overwrite the existing file on your webserver instead of uploading the finished image with a different file name?
I'm also noticing now that edujante had a last minute entry only an hour before your update that I never saw before tonight! (it also didn't get copy/pasted here in the voting section, it's only on the now locked chow 60 thread)
-err wait, I saw that he attempted it, but the url was busted or something. seems to be working now.

Very nice entries, a lot of good ones.
I chose Chuck, mate as my favorite because I think it has a great style, atmosphere and is funny. I would probably die of laughter if something like that would crawl past me :P

bwkeough - hey, no harm no foul. I joined in 2003, more as a "spectator", plus I could learn a lot from the tutorials and what the other artists were doing. I've just started posting on COW and CHOW cuz ...well, chalk it up to finding the courage to do so. Consider me a pemanent fixture around here now.
