Chief Librarian of the Lost Sea Scrolls
Hey man - here's my topic idea
"Chief Librarian of the Lost Sea Scrolls
The Chief Librarian was once a lord of Atlantis. Foreseeing the citys demise he gathered the most sacred and powerful texts and took them to a place where no mortal could find them. He now lives in solitude, the sole guardian of the secrets that allow one to control the most powerful forces in the oceans. "

February 26th, 2007, 08:25 PM
Sounds fun, I think I might actually try and participate in this one, and hopefully this won't be like all the other times I've said I think I'll participate and then not participate.
February 27th, 2007, 01:41 AM
Oooooo..... good one.....

life on the sofa
February 27th, 2007, 07:44 PM
wow imaginative topic, gonna be dusty and oldy-ish, but not too sure how i would go about setting this scene, maybe some research on the dead sea scrolls, sandy pyramid style interiors and most important of all....:( how to draw a scroll lol.:)
February 27th, 2007, 11:50 PM
My guy carries the scrolls around his neck so that they never leave him while he travels through a labyrinth of undersea caves to get to a new world.
February 28th, 2007, 05:11 AM
real nice topic.
first few thumbs
got a busy weekend ahead so thats me done folks.
February 28th, 2007, 05:36 AM
Wow, Cakeypigdog! Thumbs?? they're cool pics, I really like the big guy, cool pose and mask!
February 28th, 2007, 05:47 AM
Well i'll try to make this one, even if I am not certain I can pull it in time...
EDIT : here is my take on the subject :
The concept :
Atlantean chief librarians were exclusively selected among the clown fish hybrid, for only them were able to manipulate the precious scroll made out of jellyfish hide without hurting themselves. When Atlantis fell, the long lived hybrids saved the vast majority of the scroll, and pleged to protect them until the day when Atlantis shall rise again. Today, they live in isolation, dispatched among the vast sandy sea plains, storing the scrolls at the heart of venimous sea anemone, which also provide them their characteristic mantles.
EDIT2: Following Dragon4lunch remark, I am compelled to precise that the red coral is fire coral, a highly venimous polyp. As such, it is more a potential weapon than a cane.
February 28th, 2007, 05:52 PM
Really nice topic...lots of ideas going on my mind...
here is just a WIP (http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6297/scrolldudepx8.jpg) of mine....i hope i have time to color it ^^
February 28th, 2007, 10:04 PM
Found the idea interesting so i thought Id throw a couple hours into something.
March 1st, 2007, 06:02 AM
man!! Amazing topic, i hope iŽll find time to join this chow! :pirate:
March 1st, 2007, 07:07 AM
Graphuji and Cakeypigdog those are some nice thumbnails! Good start people, good start!
Beluciel: Hehe, I like the idea of this jelly-like coat he/she/it is wearing! Certainly quite a bit different from what I was thinking in terms of the topic - but hey, a fish creature would certainly qualify, as long as you dress it :)
The cane is funny, because it would be completly useless, if he is floating and swimming anyway.
March 1st, 2007, 07:54 AM
Many thanks Dragon4lunch.
I asked myself what would be the easiest way to put the scrolls out of mortal reach and storing them inside deadly animals was my best guess.
Of course, thoses scrolls would have to be water proof, so I made them of jellyfish hide, and before you know it, deadly animals+jellyfish just add to clown-fish hybrid. The coat was a logical step then.
As for the cane, I didn't precise it, but one may assume it's made of fire coral, yet another kind of highly venomous polyp, and serve more as a potential weapon than a support. That and yes, I couldn't see my librarian priest without a handy support on which to lend, even if he is a fish...
Maybe I should precise the fire coral story in the concept...

Had loads a fun doing it....
March 1st, 2007, 09:07 AM

March 1st, 2007, 11:04 AM

and this is as far as i can go in the time i have left...hope im not too late :^^;:
Utilizing what Atlantean technology that remain, the former lord of Atlantis hides away the most powerful secrets of the ocean. Under the depths of his now watery domain, lies the hope of a once-glorious civilisation and the one man who lives to guard it.
March 1st, 2007, 01:24 PM
D-BARKER> Woohoo! That rocks! Hope painting won't destroy it.
March 1st, 2007, 02:28 PM
Here's mine that I'm working on. Still need to get some clothes on there (nekkid merman! for shame! :) ) and detail the scrolls on the ocean bed, but it should be clear enough what I'm heading towards on this one.
March 1st, 2007, 03:39 PM
new to this thing
March 1st, 2007, 07:18 PM
Similar to the Mermaid King - Mr. Grumble anywhere to be seen?
March 1st, 2007, 11:06 PM
probably won't be able to finish but here's what I got :\
awesome Cakeypigdog and D-Baker
March 2nd, 2007, 09:05 AM
Real nice topic this week, lets see if I can get this one so's i'm happy with it.
Great work so far folks by the way, D-BAKER esp.
Final. Very little time to work on it, but this is as finished as its going to get by the deadline.
Lost for millenia beneath the ocean, the last remaining Atlantan presides over the remnants of a once majestic civilisation. Tirelessly guarding the entirety of their knowledge and technology until the world above the waves is ready to receive it.
March 2nd, 2007, 05:48 PM
wow, looking great so far kboss, I really like the way you shaded his face :)
March 2nd, 2007, 08:09 PM
kboss that is looking pretty money! How do you go about colouring your work after you are done with the black and white part? Do you look at the value of the gray tone and then chose a color and punch in the same brightness value, then paint over the gray?
March 2nd, 2007, 08:11 PM
cakeypigdog: Man, nice piece, but the guy's right hand is quite awkward and takes away from the overall quality of the piece. You should fix it!
March 2nd, 2007, 08:11 PM
Might as well call this finished:\
D-BAKER and cakeypigdog....you guys own.
March 2nd, 2007, 09:44 PM
Dragon4lunch, cheers mate. How I did this one was to paint over the green monochrome with a mid opacity hue or colour brush to keep a bit of the overall green in everything, and then just pick colours and paint with a normal brush from there. If that makes sense... Glad you like it anyway :)
March 2nd, 2007, 10:22 PM
By the way, hello.
March 3rd, 2007, 12:08 AM
Every morning she would wake, the last of her kind. Her servants had passed long ago. Every waking morning was a ritual, a remembering.
Every day she would tend to the responsibilities entrusted to her by a forgotten race. Her pets, as she knew them, kept the histories of a thousand years safe, and as she passed by each one, it would gently nudge her, tentatively, respectfully, reminding her that they knew, and remembered.
Every night she would slip into her bed. The folds of sleep would press softly against her, and she would pass from one day to the next. Her life would never end.
In the morning she would wake...

D-baker rules although something is lost in the painted version.
March 3rd, 2007, 05:43 AM
-d-baker: what a wonderful drawing! my favourite piece in here. too bad the colors destroyed most of the nice texture, so i would prefer an even more rendered drawing. :)
March 3rd, 2007, 08:42 AM
mc2mc2: I like the transition into octopus, not that it hasn't been done before, but it is the first time I can recall seeing a sharpe edge on the tentacles, rather than all round (don't know if you understand what I mean here).
I do think you should have cropped it differently. The tentacles need more room! I'd have increase the size of the image on the left side and rendered those tentacles better!
March 3rd, 2007, 11:50 AM
Here's my Final. Not that I had a WIP.
D-Baker: Awesome stuff. I kinda liked the suckers on his arm before, but your coloring is so off the wall, I love it.
Corrik and Kboss: Can't wait to see those finals.
March 3rd, 2007, 12:35 PM
Crap. I never read that this was a guy. I was wondering why this place was turning into a sausage fest... dammit.
I'm assuming gender relocation probably wasn't Atlantean in origin and I'm gonna have to change up?
Oh and D-Baker, as you already know, that is completely fantastic. In every way. The sheen coming off the "shell" makes this image. Not to mention the character perfection. Nicely done.
March 3rd, 2007, 01:04 PM
Corrick - Power to the females, I hope they accept the entry.
March 3rd, 2007, 05:06 PM
Vulgar' why not ? It's not said that the Chief Librarian must be male.
March 3rd, 2007, 05:31 PM
It's the 'lord' and 'he' parts that give it away. :lineart:
March 3rd, 2007, 06:08 PM
Yeah, that kinda cinches it. :) Silly gender-slant. To hell with it, I'm paintin' it anyway...
March 3rd, 2007, 06:40 PM
Hey guys, some sweet entries again. Anyways, I was starting with a old miser type scribe, but I always think my stuff is too 'safe' and it kinda pisses me off at myself. So I ditched that idea and thought about it, we have this guy who was a Lord of Atlantis, who saw the end coming, perhaps no-one beleived him, called him a deluded doomsayer, so he gathered the scrolls and secreted himself and the scrolls away for enternity. The long, bitter solitude has twisted him into a madman, frightened of every shadow, every noise and the anger has made him visicious. so on and so forth...
Anyways, heres a wip to see where I am heading, I thought I take a chance as its an exercise and thats the point, right?
Soorry! Down to the wire again, morale of the story dont change ideas mid term! Pretty rushed not happy with the hands or the pose now Ive finished d'oh oh well, in the hands of the judges!
March 3rd, 2007, 06:51 PM

Beluciel, after checking out everyone's work I noticed an interesting similarity in our filing systems! I like it! Great minds think alike, eh? :D
March 4th, 2007, 03:42 PM
Posted final. Nice work everyone. Some great entries this week.
March 4th, 2007, 06:08 PM
March 4th, 2007, 07:05 PM
Wow. Jakkas, always a pleasure to see you work...
Only thing that seems superfluous is the ghosted duplicate, it's so similar in size that it just doesn't do any other good than to fill space... other than that, I love the hell out of it...
March 4th, 2007, 07:47 PM
A CHOW entry by JakkaS!!! Cool to see you enter here! That is one strong librarian, look at those arems! Bodybuilder turned book lover, hehehe!
March 5th, 2007, 04:34 AM

Hey, Thx Guys.
Xgabo - cool stuff
March 5th, 2007, 05:58 AM
Wow, Corrick! You rock, I love that piece man! Serene power is what she exudes! Maybe the gender slant was one of those coverups in history were they edit out the mention of women with power, yeah!
March 5th, 2007, 06:45 AM
hmm... lots of effort on this one.. new poeple joined here.. interesting... BUT it;'s not me who'll do the head off's...
If it was by me... quite a few of the entries would have to get better to go up the poll.
The call however, belongs to our honnorable host and client, Mr Andrew Ley.
Please sir, feel free to allow for the poll, the entries that are suitable to your initial request in terms of topic and quallity.
Mind you, that if you enjoy this topic, you can dig in and do the Enviro.
