Finished this up today. check the WIP (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8910) .
Not enough time to really work any more on it. I feel like I could have done more with the guy, I think he kinda gets lost over there.
c&c welcome.

That is really a breathtaking piece. It reminds me moodwise of an obscure Frazetta painting called (I think) 'Cave Demon' that portrays a fighter going against a large apelike demon emerging from a cave on a mountainside. Basically, it looks like the point of impact is going to hurt both sides.
Awesome colours and execution!

That is now probably my favorite representation of the Chimera. I'm only saying that because it's true.
I love the colors and the horns.
That light patch of cliff face behind the man's hand is obviously lighter because the guy's shadow isn't covering it. But for some reason my brain wants to view that light spot as a lump sticking into the foreground and it disrupts my perception of the perspective where the man is standing. I don't know if that's an actual problem or if it's only my brain. It's probably just me. I'm not very bright.

I think the chimera is so good that it would be a shame not to rework the guy
when time allowed. He lacks the depth of character in comparison and his anatomy
and clothing confused me a bit.(A work is judged by it's weakest element?)
Thanks for posting, very inspirational.

Nice job. I also think it could use a bit more work, esp. the guy's armor, but time's a bitch, don't I know. But it's a nice piece nonetheless. I think the manticore's awesome but I almost wish the eye was a tad less "cartoony" - maybe smaller - which would enhance the fierceness of the beast. Another thing is the I tend to the that the beast's too obviously "cut out" from the blurred background, especially the paw.
But all that's minor.

Mitch-
Nice piece! The background and the wings are particularly impressive... oh and the horns too!
The guy's skin may be a bit muddy, and I agree that the armor needs a little more attention, but the action and composition are great.
If you ever find yourself getting back to this piece then maybe you ought to try to make the knights' face stand out a bit more, making it the main focal point of the piece, since the tail, horns and claws all point towards his face.
Great addition to your portfolio. Keep up the always impressive work!

Hey.....your animal seems to leap out of the page when you stare at it for a while.....similar to like when you wear 3d glasses ......try it......it might be the colours playing tricks on me.......keep it up!

Great stuff Mitch! As everyone has said, the colors were a good choice.
I do think you should revisit the warrior when you have time. This piece deserves going back to and would make a dramatic portfolio piece.
Would you mind sharing what brushes you used? I'm assuming this is done in either Painter or Photoshop.
Thanks for sharing this! Very nice!

mcotie, first off I want to say you are a great inspiration to me. Probably my favorite thing about your art is how much energy and action you put into them. Its always a treat.
As for a crit, well personally I really like the armored guy. What I don't like so much about the piece is the dark outline around many parts of the Chimera like his outstretched paw and arm. It seems like it makes it not a part of the scene and more pasted onto it. Its not even that bad, but it is the first thing that I noticed that I felt was off.
But the piece is great, and again I love your energy you infuse into them.
