which I was sort of doing as a portfolio piece since I'm trying to do more wine label design. I liked the first one, but it just wasn't quite "right." Y'know?

I think the first one is more "right" than the second sketch. It definitely has more of a classical feel to it. Have you ever looked at some stuff by Alphonse Mucha or even Mike Kaluta has some real symbolic/design pieces that might get some gears turning for you.
